Watching the number of likes can be both attractive and addictive. That same buzz (兴奋) can have its disadvantages, though. We all know the feeling of watching other people’s posts get unending positive feedback. We tell ourselves that the only reason why these people are getting attention is that they’re popular and good-looking. We sink into self-loathing (自我讨厌) and comparison. Therefore, after experimenting with hiding likes on Instagram in select countries, Facebook is exploring doing the same on its main platform. That Facebook is considering this is encouraging. After years of appearing to ignore criticism about its effects on society, the company finally seems to be listening. However, there is a basic conflict between Facebook’s business model and its new-found altruism(利己主义). Relying on Facebook to look after its users’ mental health is a bit like asking McDonald’s to keep its customers’ blood pressure under control: At some point, a company’s need to make money is not in line with its supposed desire to do good. The problem with likes is that they mark out how successful or happy others are, which in turn can promote a feeling of envy and insecurity. It’s a real phenomenon. However, Facebook would certainly want you to post things that get more likes. The company’s success relies upon you posting more and encouraging more “engagement” from other people so that the value of Facebook’s targeted ad business increases.Facebook’s reliance on engagement is deep-rooted, and it destroys a supposed desire to prevent the platform from encouraging envy. Without doubt, hiding likes can have some benefit, but the way Facebook is built means that this will always be a small step at best.4. Why does Facebook try hiding likes on its main platform?A. To catch more users’ eyes.B. To get involved in an experiment.C. To reduce users’ negative feelings.D. To encourage users’ posting positive things.5. What can we infer from the comparison between Facebook and McDonald’s?A. Facebook focuses more on the users’ interests.B. Facebook cares less about users’ mental health.CFacebook makes a lot of money from the users.D. Facebook does better than McDonald’s in service.6. What does more “engagement” mean to Facebook according to paragraph 4?A. The growth of value. B. More users’ needs.C. The increases of desire. D. More users’ security.7. What is the author’s attitude towards Facebook’s hiding likes?ANegative. B. Positive.C. Objective. D. IndifferentCFor humans, adapting to climate change will mostly be a matter of technology. More air conditioning, better-designed houses and bigger flood defenses may help lessen the effects of a warmer world. Animals will have to rely on changing their bodies or their behaviour. In a paper published in Trends in Ecology & Evolution, a team led by Sara Ryding, a professor in Australia, shows that is already happening. In some species of Australian parrot, for instance, beak size has increased by between 4% and 10% since 1871. Similar trends are seen in species of mice and bats growing bigger ears, tails, legs and wings. All that fits nicely with evolutionary theory. “Allen’s rule”, named after Joe Allen, who suggested it in 1877, holds that warm-blooded animals in hot places tend to have larger appendages than those in mild areas. Such adaptations boost an animal’s surface area relative to its body volume, helping it to shed extra heat. Fennec foxes, meanwhile, which are native to the Sahara desert, have strikingly large ears, especially compared with their Arctic cousins.Ryding’s team combined data from different species in different places. Now that they have little in common apart from living on a warming planet, climate change is the most reasonable explanation. Since any evolutionary adaptation comes with trade-offs, it is unclear how far the process might go. Bigger beaks might interfere with feeding, for instance. Larger wings are heavier, and bigger legs cost more energy to grow.Honestly, studying a broader range of animals will help firm up exactly what is happening. For now, at least, the increase is small, never much more than 10%. That may change as warming accelerates. But it seems clear that the world of the future is not just going to be hotter than humans are used to. The animals living in it will look different, too.8. What does the author want to tell us by mentioning Australian parrot in Paragraph 1?A. Climate change is affecting animals.B. Scientists are doing research on animals.C. Humans can adapt to climate change more easily.D. Animals are adapting to warmer climate in their own ways.9. What is the benefit of having bigger body parts according to the passage?A. Getting rid of additional heat.B. Becoming larger and stronger.C. Enlarging animals’ surface area.D. Becoming more sensitive to the environment.10. What do we know about the change in animals from the last two paragraphs?A. It comes at an expense. B. Its cause is definite.C. It happens in the same habitat. D. Its process will end soon.11. What can be a suitable tile for the text?A. Living on a Warming Planet B. Evolution to Survive HeatC. Pioneering Research on Animals D. Measures to Fight against HeatDThe secrets of dreaming are always interesting psychologists. It is generally acknowledged in the field that dreams people have during this time between childhood and full adulthood, that’s around 30, are the strongest and most influential. Yet not enough is known about the repeated patterns of dreaming. Researchers are still trying to answer a basic question: How does dreaming relate to the life experiences and developmental challenges?G. William Domhoff and Adam Schneider, at the University of California, help to answer this question by examining the lengthy dream series of two individuals, Izzy and Jasmine. Izzy provided a collection of 4,329 dream reports from between the ages of 12 and 25, while Jasmine provided 664 dreams recorded between the ages of 14 and 25.Large collections of dreams like these pose challenges to researchers. Until recently, the means of studying dream series was to employ a team of recorders who take the time to code each dream for a predetermined number of content categories, and then compare their results. Nowadays, digital technologies enable the analysis of language usage in dreams with high speed, precision, and objectivity. This marks a revolutionary advance in the science of dreaming. However, it can only lead so far.To gain more specific and detailed insights, Domhoff and Schneider tailored word strings for each dreamer, mixing elements of traditional research with digital tools for analyzing large data sets. For Izzy these word strings included “family and relatives”, “celebrities” and “fantasy”, while the word strings they created for Jasmine included “familiar places”, “electrical equipment” and “music”. The researchers used these word strings to identify connections between their dreams and real lives. Surprisingly, the results of the analysis revealed a great deal of consistency and continuity in both sets of dreams. Izzy pays much attention to pop culture, and has affection for famous actors. Jasmine is an accomplished musician and performer.“The frequencies of dream elements reveal the intensity of the dreamer’s personal concern with that element in waking thought,” Domhoff and Schneider conclude. For anyone who still claims dreaming is merely random nonsense from the brain and mental world, these findings are hard to explain away.12. What do psychologists agree with about dreams?A. Dreams are interesting at all times.B. Dreams are influenced by life experiences.C. The patterns of dreaming are usually repeated.D. Dreams in one’s teens and twenties are most intense.13. What does “it” underlined in paragraph 3 refer to?A. The digital method. B. The collection of dreams.C. The revolutionary advance. D. The research into dreaming.14. How do the researchers conduct their study?A. By analyzing large data sets.B. By identifying the patterns of dreaming.C. By developing individualized word strings.D. By making comparison with traditional research.15. Which can be the best title for the text?A. New tech, new finding B. Dreams: reflections of waking realityC. Lives, languages, dreams D. Life experiences: elements of dreams第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。The interview process is a part of nearly all hiring decisions. ____16____ The process can provide understanding about the attitude and character of the applicant. Many people try to get interviews after seeing only a short advertisement or posting that gives only the general title and basic requirements of the job. ____17____  It is also for the candidate to decide whether the job is right for him or her.____18____ Often, interviews are a second or final step of the hiring process, after applications and résumés have been presented. An employer may choose to interview all of the candidates, or a few top applicants that seem to have the most experience. Interviews may be conducted over the phone or in person. Phone interviews may be done to narrow the field to only a few candidates. Since the interview process may take place weeks or months after applications are submitted, phone interviews allow the employer to know whether the applicant is still interested in the job. In-person interviews permit the most detailed examination for both the candidate and the employer. ____19____During the interview process, the employer may ask a variety of questions about the applicant’s motives, ambitions, experience, education, and personality. ____20____  Some employers may rate or grade applicants based on their answers. Ratings and grades may be weighted depending on the employer and the job. After all interviews are completed, the employer will usually give the job to the person with the highest weighted rating.A. This information is generally kept private.B. It’s not always quick and easy to get hired.C. So it may take longer time than a phone interview.D. The questions you ask can make or break an interview.E. Employers may conduct an interview process in different ways.F. The interview may be about whether the candidate is right for the job.G. I found it hard to fit in.Our teacher had assigned "secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid's name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left cards, pens and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed there was a package. I opened the wrapping paper and inside was a box of powder(胭脂粉).The girls sitting near me laughed the gift I had received. To make matters worse, the powder had already been opened.I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls who had seen me open the powder started speaking ill of my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in "How terrible," I heard myself saying "What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn't even want it." The girls laughed at my remarks and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn't normal like me to say mean things like that about someone.Paragraph 1:Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth(厕所隔间)tears streaming down her face._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Paragraph 2:Along with my apologies, I explained the reason._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________听力答案:1-5 CACCA 6-10 ABACB 11-15 CBCCA 16-20 CACAC

She shouted at me with anger, “If you don’t want my gift you can just leave it instead of laughing at it. This is the best powder from my mum! “Before I could say a word, Janet dashed out, leaving me dumb with deep regret. But soon I clenched my fingers and made up my mind to find Janet and say sorry to her. There she was, sitting in a tree shadow wiping her eyes.Paragraph 2:Along with my apologies, I explained the reason. I was not a mean girl by judging people’s presents. The reason why I complained in front of the girls was that I wanted to fit in, having a sense of belonging in the group. Hearing my sincere words, Janet calmed herself down after constant sobs and said, “True friendship comes from genuine care and love for each other. I think that’s our teacher’s intention of this ‘secret friend’ assignment”. That day, I learned to cherish real friendship.听力答案:1-5 CACCA 6-10 ABACB 11-15 CBCCA 16-20 CACAC
