The African Bush Elephant can weigh up to 5.5 tons, making it one of the largest mammals(哺乳动物) alive. It is only second to the giraffe in terms of height!

Previously thought to exist as one species, both the African Bush Elephant and African Forest Elephant were discovered to be two different subspecies. Basically, they both have very big ears. But, the Bush Elephant is larger and has a lighter color and outward curving(弯曲) long teeth, whereas the Forest Elephant is smaller, very dark and has downward facing straight teeth.

The African Bush Elephant’s habitat is given away by its namein the African Bush! This includes grasslands and primary forest within Central and Southern Africa. These locations are perfect areas for the African Bush Elephant to find food. An ideal meal for the African Bush Elephant consists of plenty of grass, fruits, and roots. Their teeth can be used for digging.

All elephants are social and live in societies. This means that they are led by an older, more experienced female, and females stick together. As migrant animals, they are constantly travelling together to search for food and keep their young safe.

Although population levels are recovering, African Bush Elephants face many threats. Similar to other species, loss of land reduces the availability of food and water, meaning they have to travel further. What’s worse, some won’t survive the journey if they cross paths with poachers (偷猎者). African Bush Elephants aren’t just killed for the illegal trade, but they are often the sufferers of conflicts with local people too.

To help them, we need to give them room to travel! A possible solution would be to provide wildlife roads that allow the African Bush Elephant to travel without coming into conflict with people. The African Wildlife Foundation combines governments and communities in Africa and works to set land aside for this purpose. Similarly, education that encourages people to understand the African Bush Elephant can change awareness and reduce local hunting pressure.

    4. Which is the picture of an African Forest Elephant?

    A.  B.  C.  D.

    5. Where can you find an African Bush Elephant?

    A. Mountains in Africa.

    B Forests in Western Africa.

    C. Grasslands in Central Africa.

    D. Desert areas in Southern Africa.

    6. What’s the main threat to the African Bush Elephants?

    A. Lack of leading female elephants.

    B. Development of the trade.

    C. Low level of socialization.

    D. Worse living conditions.

    7. What do the underlined words“this purpose" in the last paragraph refer to?

    A. Providing passageways. B. Travelling further.

    C. Fighting with others. D. Educating people.

    C

Imagine a world where photography is a slow process that is impossible to master without years of study. Such a world existed in 1973, when Steven Sasson, a young engineer, went to work for Eastman Kodak company.

Soon after arriving at Kodak, Mr. Sasson was given a taskto see whether there was any practical use for a charged coupled device (C.C.D.), which consisted of a sensor(传感器) that took an incoming light and transformed it into an electrical signal.

Mr. Sasson wanted to capture an image with it, but the C.C.D. couldn’t hold it because the electrical pulses(脉冲) quickly disappeared. To store the image, he decided to use digitalization, turning the electronic pulses into numbers, But that solution led to another challengestoring it on RAM memory, then getting it onto digital tape. He also needed to invent a playback system that would take the digital information on the tape and tum it into “something that you could see” on a television set: a digital image. It was a photographic system of an all-electronic camera that didn’t use film and didn’t use paper, and no consumables(消耗品) at all in the capturing and display of still photographic images.

The camera and the playback system were the beginning of the digital photography age. But the digital revolution did not come easily at Kodak. The main objections came from the marketing and business sides. Kodak’s marketing department was not interested in it, Mr, Sasson was told they could sell the camera, but wouldn’tbecause it would cat away at the company’s film sales, Though Kodak did eventually market both professional and consumer cameras, it was too late, Mr, Sasson said, “It was just a matter of time, and yet Kodak didn’t really embrace any of it.”

    8. What can the C.C.D. be used for?

    A. Collecting light.

    B. Capturing pictures.

    C. Changing light into electronic signals.

    D. Storing images in the RAM.

    9. Why does the author call the photographic system a revolution?

    A. It creates an age of paperless office.

    B. It develops a better way of using films.

    C. It invents a new way to store digital information.

    D. It changes the way humans process images greatly.

    10. What is the third paragraph mainly about?

    A. The working rules of full digital photographic system.

    B. The ways of developing a traditional camera.

    C. How to make full use of the C.C.D.

    D. How to show pictures on a TV set.

    11. What’s Kodak’s attitude towards Mr. Sasson’s invention?

    A. Doubtful. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Respectful.

    D

In recent years, scientists have found a surprising phenomenon: In many cultures around the world, parents don’t struggle to raise helpful, kind kids. From ages 2 to 18, kids want to help their families. They wake up in the morning, voluntarily do the dishes, hop off their bikes to help their dad carry groceries into the house and when somebody hands them a cake, they share it with a younger sister or brother before taking a bite themselves. You can find these charitable kids among farmers, hunters and fishermen,

During the past four years, I’ve been interested in learning what are these parents doing to nurture such helpfulness in their kids? While doing the research, I traveled to three of the world’s most honored culturesthe Maya, Inuit and Hadzabe, and describe what I found in my new bookHunt, Gather, Parent.

Supported by psychologists, my research result shows that parents raising helpful children welcome young children and babies into family chores and work — even if the child will make a bit of a mess or slow down the work, just opposite to many of American parents. What they say is that, “I know they are not going to do a good job, but to create more work for me.” In fact, turning down help from kids can have a bad influence, destroying their desire to help and possibly stop their desire to take care of their families.

“Given request at an early age, the children would start to act on what’s needed, and then the less likely parents need to be telling them what to do later,” Lew-Levy, a psychologist in Harvard University, says “You can pull back on the teaching, and kids just do it on their own.” But how does a parent let a young baby help with a task they can’t actually do yetespecially a task that may be too dangerous for them? You can find specific instructions in the following chapter.

    12. What does the underlined word “charitable” mean in paragraph 1?

    A. Selfish. B. Dependent. C. Helpful. D. Curious.

    13. Which of the following best describes the parents raising helpful children?

    A. Patient and serious. B. Open-minded and thoughtful.

    C. Influential and risky. D. Hardworking and adventurous.

    14. What do Lew-Levy’s words mean?

    A. Children just act on what their parents tell them to do.

    B. Parents should allow kids to do whatever they want.

    C. Parents are unlikely to tell children what to do at an early age.

    D. Children are more voluntary when given requests at a young age.

    15. Which is the best title for the text?

    A. How can We Parent Caring Kids?

    B. How to Be Kind Parents?

    C. The Helpful Children in Some Cultures

    D. The Growing Experiences of Helpful Children

My name’s Don Ball. I’m fifteen and I go to Blueway Comprehensive School, Mike is the same age and goes to the local grammar school, but we’ve been friends since junior school, We both live in the village of Saltley, which is in the Midlands. We’ve been birdwatching together since we were 11. I suppose we’re quite good at it now, because we do it regularly, read about it, use the Net to find out about birds, and we’re members of a club for birdwatchers, too.

We have a secret place, named RP, to watch birds. RP is the name we gave to a set of three small lakes surrounded by woods. They are called Redman’s Pools on large maps, but lots of people don’t know they are there because they are hidden by trees.

One day, Mike told me that he saw osprey(鱼鹰) there, which surprised me. There weren’t any in Britain because they’d been hunted too much. They were protected by the RSPB, because lots of people wanted the eggs for their collections.

By now the ospreys had finished building their nest at the top of one of the pine trees on the island in the middle of Big Pool, Of course, we still went to watch them every weekend, and a couple of nights after school, now that the days were getting longer.

One Saturday we were surprised to find a white car parked on the roadside near the track, and as we wheeled our bikes down the track to Redman’s Pools we saw a middle-aged man walking along the side of the pools with a large blue plastic bag over his shoulder.

He stopped at the point where the bank was closest to the island and started doing something with the bag. I was horrified by what I saw. The man had taken a small inflatable(可充气的) plastic boat out of his blue bag, and he was blowing it up.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

He was going to row over to the ospreys’ island!

Seeing him climbing up the tree, I knew it was the time to call the police.

47【答案】He was going to row over to the ospreys’ island! After fully inflating the boat, he placed it in the water, got in, and started to row himself across the water to the island. The male osprey flew off its branch, and circled around. The female on the nest looked worried but didn't move, watching as the small boat got closer. The man moved his boat around to the island. Then he pulled the boat out of the water and made his ways towards the tree. When he got to the tree, he looked up and climbed up!

Seeing him climbing up the tree, I knew it was the time to call the police. Hearing what I said, one policeman promised to come as soon as he could. I took a series of photographs of the man holding the bag with the eggs in it. When I was thinking what to do next, I heard a loud voice was speaking clearly. “You are under arrest for stealing the eggs of a protected bird.” It was the policeman speaking through a police megaphone. “Sit down with your hands on your head and wait.” Later, the man was taken to the police station. Mike and I cycled back home, feeling proud that we had managed to save the eggs.
