My work started in 2003 at my local animal shelter’s Adoption Department. It seems like such a long time ago. In the 13 years that have passed, more than 50,000 animals have passed the doors of the shelter. Most of them, I do not remember. But occasionally there are animals who stand out. Tabby was one such animal.

Tabby was one of the many homeless dogs. What’s more, she was blind and deaf. Tabby’s chances at adoption seemed remote at best. But one day a woman named Loretta came to the shelter. Her son, Gary, who suffered from epilepsy (癫痫) had seen Tabby’s picture on the shelter’s website. They were interested in meeting her! Most boys would want a puppy, a dog who could grow with him and run through grassy fields on summer days. Tabby would never be able to do that. But as they say, "love is blind". After meeting her, they decided to adopt Tabby!

If Tabby’s story had simply ended with her successful adoption, it would still have been something very special indeed but it was what happened after her adoption that some might label as "magical" or perhaps even miraculous. As Gary and Tabby did everything together, they became so "in tune" with one another that Tabby began to telegraph Gary’s seizures (疾病发作) before they occurred, giving his family a warning that one was about to strike. What’s more, Gary seemed to be having fewer and fewer seizures since Tabby’s arrival.

How could it be? There are some things that happen in this world that challenge all logic and understanding. Sometimes the best that we can do is to accept a miraculous thing, which we didn’t attempt to explain. Because when you try to explain it, you lose the beauty and wonder of it all.

    4. Which sentence can be used to describe Tabby?

    A. She was so lovely that she could be easily adopted.

    B. She suffered a lot from the disease-epilepsy.

    C. She was so strong that she could run very fast.

    D. She was homeless and couldn’t see or hear.

    5. What does the underlined word "miraculous" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A. Amazing. B. Typical. C. Interesting. D. Special.

    6. What can we learn from the passage?

    A. Gary learnt about Tabby from a magazine.

    B. Gary was cured in the company of Tabby.

    C. Tabby could indicate a seizure before it struck.

    D. Most boys would have the same decision as Gary.

    7. What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Love is Blind: a Miraculous Dog B. Give Me Food: My Dear Master

    C. Love is Everywhere: a Poor Dog D. Take Me Home: My Dear Boy

    C

Bottled water has become the choice for people who are healthy and thirsty. Bottled water is all over the world. But some say the planet’s health, and people’s health may be suffering from it.

The idea that bottled water is safer for humans may not be true. The Natural Resources Defense Council of America said, “There is no promise that because water comes out of a bottle, it is cleaner or safer than water from the tap.” Another New York City-based action group added that some bottled water is “really just tap water in a bottle—sometimes more clean, sometimes not.”

It is not proven that bottled water is better than tap water. Nick Reeves from the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management said, “The high mineral content (含量) of some bottled water makes them not good for feeding babies and young children.” Also, most bottled water doesn’t have fluoride (氟化物), which can make teeth stronger. Kids are drinking more bottled water and less fluoridated tap water, and some say that’s behind the recent rise in bad teeth.

Storing is another problem. Placed near heat, the plastic bottles can produce bad chemicals (化学物质) into the water.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, some 2.7 million tons of plastic are used worldwide to bottle water each year. The plastic can take between 400 and 1,000 years to break down.

In terms of energy use, plastic bottles are also not cheap. One report said that if water and soft drink bottlers had used 10 percent recycled materials in their plastic bottles, they would have saved about 72 million gallons of gas.

So, if you are worried about the effect of bottled water on the Earth, you can take the following steps.

Drink from your tap. Unless your government warns against this, it should be fine.

Get a container (容器). Carry your tap water in a steel or a lined drinking container, and clean it between uses.

Keep it cool. Don’t drink from a bottle that has been sitting in the sun, don’t store it near chemicals, and don’t reuse plastic bottles.

Choose glass containers over plastic if possible. When finished, recycle!

    8. What is the main idea of the article?

    A. Drinking tap water is the only choice for people.

    B. Glass containers are better than plastic bottles.

    C. Plastic bottles are harmful to the environment.

    D. Bottled water may not be as good as we think.

    9. What can we learn about plastic bottles from the article?

    A. They break down in less than 300 years. B. They can be used for many other things.

    C. They are a risk to the environment. D. They are cheap to make.

    10. According to the article we can know that bottled water is __________.

    A. no problem for the environment B. more expensive than tap water

    C. always safer than tap water D. better for babies

11Which of the following about tap water is NOT mentioned in the article?

    A. There are a lot of problems storing tap water.

    B. Bottled water can be just tap water in a bottle.

CIt may be better for your teeth.

    D. It may contain fluoride.

    D

Most adults firmly believe that as kids reach their teens, they start to take crazy risks that get them in trouble. Do teenagers simply love taking all risks much more than adults? A recent study suggests otherwise.Scientists designed a simple experiment involving 33 teenagers and three other age groups.

In the experiment, the researchers tried to distinguish between two very different kinds of risk-taking. The first they called a willingness to take known risks (when the probability of winning is clear) and the second they called a willingness to take unknown risks (when the possibility of success is uncertain).

The study offered participants the opportunity to play two kinds of games. They had the chance to win money, with one game offering a known risk and the other offering an unknown risk. On each round of the game, each participant had to choose between taking a sure $5 and known or unknown risks of choices. In the known risk condition, people always knew the exact chance of winning more money, from as low as 13% to as high as 75%. In the unknown risk condition, researchers did not reveal the exact chances of winning.

What the scientists found was really quite surprising. It turned out that the average teenager was very hesitant when risks were known—more careful than college students or parents-aged adults, and about as careful as grandparent-aged adults. This means that when the risks were known, teenagers were not risky in their behavior at all. Only when the risks were unclear did teenagers choose them more often than other groups. Under those kinds of conditions, they were much more willing to take a risk than any other group.

The research, published in Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences, suggests that adults should probably focus more energy on trying to educate teenagers about risks than limiting them. Teenagers who understand the risks associated with a decision are more likely to be careful in their behavior.

    12. The two kinds of games differed in whether________.

    A. the risks were willing taken B. the chances of winning were clear

    C. the participants could be careful D. the choices they can make are enough

    13. When facing known risks, teenagers tended to be ________.

    A. ambitious B. anxious C. curious D. cautious

    14. Which group in the study were more likely to take unknown risks?

    A. College students B. Teenage participant C. Parent-aged students D. Grandparent-aged adults

    15. According to the study, parents should ________.

    A. set age limits on dangerous activities B. encourage children to be conservative

    C. help teens know more about risks D. allow teens to make their own decisions

    52题答案】

    【答案】Dear Jenny,

How is your survey on mobile payment goingI’m writing to inform you some specific relevant information and I’m delighted I can help with it.

It is universally acknowledged that China is the largest mobile payment market. China is more obvious in the cashless trend. Most of us are used to paying by scanning QR codes whatever we buy, which is a glimpse into the life of most Chinese like me and my family. With the widespread use of mobile payment, WeChat or Alipay is the most convenient and safest way to pay. We hardly need to carry a wallet or cash at all. Additionally, never will we worry about getting fake notes or having to count change. To conclude, mobile payment has dramatically changed people’s life in China. In terms of me, I think mobile payment should be encouraged. It has won over consumers with its convenience. On the other hand, there are often discounts if you make mobile payment, as major online payment platforms are competing because they want to have more consumers use their service.

Hopefully, the explanation can be of great benefit to you. Wish you good luck.

    Yours faithfully

    Li Hua
