It’s the eighth autumn since my father died, and I want to have some chicken nuggets (小块). My father would understand. I don’t remember him saying “I love you”. His love language was the simple pleasure of processed food. He introduced me to fries, fat cream, and sugary drinks.
There were secrets between us: a Happy Meal on our fishing trip, or two liters of Coke before my mother came home. I felt honored until I found that my father kept secrets from me. One day, I spotted a pack of cigarettes at home and threw it away. He got mad, then promised to quit, but I kept smelling smoke in his clothes and car. I had plans for my future self. The person I aimed to be was never reflected in my smoking- addicted and blue-collar (蓝领) father.
I used to hate my father for his bad habits. But the older I get, the more I see myself giving in too. And so, each autumn, I think: I’m at the age when my father followed my mother to a country where he couldn’t speak the language; now I’m at the age when he was fired and tried his first cigarette, which was as irresistible (无法抗拒) to him as the stupid online games are to me. Thus I think: the age I am is far too young for the responsibilities he took on.
I can imagine how excited my father felt upon moving to the US to discover that KFC’s was the stuff of every day. It was cheaper than fish, much more accessible than fresh fruit, and simpler than a long-distance phone call to home in which he had to hide his difficulties and his loneliness. I can imagine it might be easier to hand your child a chicken nugget — a promise of abundance (富足) and pleasure.
Is it wrong to compare my father to a piece of deep-fried food? But it’s more faithful than the usual metaphors (隐喻) of fathers as safe harbors (港湾), rocks, or teachers. None of those really rings true when it comes to my father. The next time I miss him, I’ll have a chicken nugget or two or four. And at that moment, I will understand my father completely.
24. What secret did the author share with his father?
A. Going on a fishing trip. B. Eating fish at a restaurant.
C. Smoking in the kitchen. D. Enjoying junk food together.
25. What can you know about the author’s father from the passage?
A. He expressed his love to the author through fast food.
B. He felt quite used to the life in a foreign country.
C. He set a good example of healthy life for the author.
D. He took a secure job to support the family for years.
26. What will the author probably compare his father to?
A. A safe harbor. B. A tough rock. C. A chicken nugget. D. A life teacher.
27. What can be the best title of this passage?
A. Why I Fell in Love with Processed Food B. Why I Followed the Path of My Father
C. How Fast Food Bonded My Father and Me D. How a Family Tradition Changed Me
C
As people all over the world struggled with higher levels of stress, depression (抑郁) and anxiety this past year, many turned to their favorite comfort foods: ice cream, pizza, or hamburgers. But studies in recent years suggest that the high-sugar and high-fat foods when we are stressed or depressed, as comforting as they may seem, are the least likely to benefit our mental health. Instead, whole foods such as vegetables, fruit, fish, eggs, nuts may be a better choice.
Historically, nutrition research has focused largely on how the foods we eat affect our physical health, rather than our mental health, though. Over the years, large population studies have found that people instructed to follow a Mediterranean diet for three months had greater reductions in symptoms (症状) of depression after three months compared to a control group.
Public health experts around the world have started encouraging people to have healthy lifestyle behaviors like exercise, sound sleep, a heart-healthy diet and avoiding smoking that may reduce inflammation (发炎) and have benefits for the brain. Individual clinicians (临床医生) are already including nutrition into their work with patients. Dr. Drew Ramsey, a clinical professor at the Columbia University, begins his meetings with new patients by exploring their diet. He asks what they eat, learns their favorite foods, and finds out if foods that he considers important for the connection are missing from their diets such as plants, seafood.
Dr. Ramsey said he does not want people to think that the only factor related to brain health is food. “Lots of people get their food exactly right, live very active lives and still have significant troubles with their mental health,” he said. But he also teaches people that food can have great effects. “We can’t control our genes,” he said. “But we can control how we eat and that gives people actionable things that they can do to take care of their brain health on a daily basis.”
28. What do previous nutrition studies mainly focus on?
A. How our diets affect our mental health. B. How our diets affect our physical health.
C. How our mental health affects our diets. D. How our physical health affects our diets.
29. Which of the following may probably be the best for mental health?
A. Ice cream. B. Hamburger. C. Seafood. D. Pizza.
30. Which of the following might Dr. Ramsey agree with?
A. Some connection exists between diets and mental health.
B. People can control their genes as well as how they eat.
C. People living active lives will not have mental problems.
D. Eating a healthy diet is going to cure depression.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. People with anxiety usually turn to food for comfort.
B. The daily diet is the only factor connected with brain health.
C. Controlling the way we eat is likely to benefit our mental health.
D. Having a high-sugar diet can reduce symptoms of depression.

To beautify our city and create a comfortable environment, a campaign is being launched. We students are expected to take an active part in it.
We can start from the very little things around us, like picking up waste in the street, wiping out unwanted advertisements, observing traffic rules and so on. Besides, it’s also a good idea for us to give out booklets to advocate civilized behavior.
Every little bit matters. Let’s work together to make our city more beautiful.

第二节(满分25分)
Sarah was driving home in the late afternoon. When it was still an hour’s drive away from home, the weather conditions began to worsen. With thunder crashing in the sky, the rain poured down, beating heavily against the car window. The wind was roaring and many trees were uprooted. Scared to death, Sarah had to stop the car and was left trapped in it with unspeakable fear, not having a clue what to do next. Just at the critical moment, she heard a knock at the window. Into sight was a stranger who was anxiously signaling her to abandon the car and get shelter in his house. Realizing that there couldn’t be a better choice than that, Sarah followed the stranger into his house without hesitation. Trying to comfort her, the house owner treated her to a cup of warm coffee, which surely worked and brought great relief to her. It was an hour before the storm finally left. Seeing huge trees lying across the street, Sarah was really thankful for the stranger’s timely help, without which she wouldn’t have survived the storm safe and sound.

W: Hello.
M: Good evening, Mrs. Knight. I’m with the Wide Windows Company. It’s about an enquiry you made... concerning new windows.
W: New windows? No, I’m sorry that doesn’t ring a bell with me.
M: Then maybe your husband got in touch with us?
W: No, I don’t think so. He hasn’t told me anything about it.
M: Ah. Well, I don’t want to keep you but perhaps I could just take you through the special price offer that we’re running this month.
W: Oh, I’m sorry. I haven’t got time to listen to a long sales pitch this evening.
M: No, please. I can give you a feel for what we’re offering in just... just a couple of minutes.
W: No, really. I hear what you’re saying, but we’re just not interested. Well, thank you for calling, but no.
M: Well, thank you, Mrs. Knight. Goodbye.

M: Good morning, and welcome to the Grange Craft Centre. My name is John Sands, and I will be giving information about courses at the center. Well first of all, let me tell you about the courses we offer. There are courses in painting, drawing and sculpture, and each class lasts for 30 weeks, except sculpture which is 33 weeks. All classes are on weekday evenings, and each class lasts for an hour. Drawing is on Mondays and Wednesdays, and painting and sculpture are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At the end of the year, you will have to be here at weekends to help your teachers to set up the end-of-year exhibition. There is a timetable in your information pack on your desk. You will also find an enrolment form in the information pack. Can I ask you, please, to return the form to us by the end of the month if you wish to take one of our courses? Well, I think that’s about all.
