When we reached St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox, my grandma was there to greet us and show us to our grandpa’s room. I remember walking through the long hallways, overtaken by the sound of coughing and the strong smell of sanitizer(消毒剂). I wondered how someone could ever feel better in a place so cold and boring.
When we reached grandpa’s room, his eyes lit up. Grandma explained that it was time to get up and take him for a walk.
I had always known my grandpa was an artist and a poet, but it wasn’t until we wheeled him along that I understood what it meant to see the world through his eyes. Every few steps along the hallway, he would stop and look at an old painting inside a hospital room. Where I saw boredom, he saw color, excitement and beauty. I began to learn, it was all a matter of perspective(角度).
My sisters and I decided that instead of bringing our sadness and boredom, we would bring something different to our grandpa’s bedside. Each day we visited we would bring him his old art, read him poems he had written and tell him jokes. The hospital felt more alive and welcoming with each passing day.
On the last day before we flew home, we all went for lunch. Everyone knew it would be the last time we would eat together. The meal was quiet. We were holding back our tears(眼泪) reaching for our glass of water every so often. I looked at Grandpa. There were no tears in his eyes, no signs of fear or regret; he just sat there with a smile on his face and a spoonful of soup in his mouth. At the end of that meal, he smiled gently and told us in a soft voice: “I’m ready to die.”
When Grandpa passed away that November, I didn’t grieve(感到悲痛). He wouldn’t have wanted me to.

A. He could hardly eat anything. B. He was ready to face what was to come.
C. He was trying hard to hold back his tears. D. He became quieter and calmer than before.
7. What might the author learn from Grandpa?
A. How much we enjoy makes us happy. B. You only live once so do what you want to do.
C. If you put your heart into something, you’re sure to succeed. D. If you change the way you look at life, the life you look at changes.

The British are known to be great sports lovers. When they are neither playing nor watching games, they like to talk about them. Many of the games we play now come from Britain.
The British like all kinds of races, including dog races, boat races, and even races for donkeys. The famous boat race between the teams of Oxford and Cambridge interests large crowds of people.
One of the most typical British games is cricket. It is often played in schools, colleges, universities, and by club teams all over the country. Summer isn’t summer without cricket. To many British people, cricket is both a game and a standard of behavior. When they consider something unfair, they may say, “It’s not cricket.”
But as almost everywhere else in the world, the game which draws the greatest attention in Britain is football, also known as soccer in the USA. Every Saturday from late August until the beginning of May, large crowds of people support their favorite sides on football fields. True fans will travel from one end of the country to the other to see their favorite team play. There are a lot of professional football clubs all over Britain.
The British also like to play baseball, golf, hockey, and grass-hockey. Many other sports, such as running, jumping, swimming, boxing are also popular. You may sometimes hear that there are no winter sports in Britain since the English weather is not always cold enough to ski or skate. However, winter is a good time for fishing!
Without doubt, sport in one form or another is an important part of daily life in Britain.

11. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Sports in Britain B. Winters of Britain

In 2014, Professor Ron Srigley’s whole class did badly on a test. When he asked them why, the students explained that they had read but couldn’t understand the books he had assigned(分配)to them. Srigley believed mobile technology was the cause of the problem and decided to do an experiment. He offered extra credit for students who would give up their cellphones for nine days. About a third of the class took up the challenge.
At first, all those students felt unhappy. But after a few days without smartphones, they began to notice other things too.
Two of the students were used to using their phones to message their family members throughout the day, and they felt deprived(被剥夺) of this contact. But when the students spent in-person time with their parents, the parents were mostly pleased because they suddenly had their children’s undivided attention.
We think of smartphones as a productivity tool, but the students reported the opposite was true, at least for their schoolwork. Not surprisingly, some reported paying more attention in class. Others said not having a phone helped them complete the papers they had to write. “Because I was able to give it 100 percent of my attention, not only was the final product better than it would have been, I was also able to complete it much quicker,” one wrote.
Srigley repeated the experiment in 2018 at a different, more urban(城市的)college. The students who gave up their smartphones reported the same benefits that the 2014 students had. But they also were almost completely helpless without them. “Even the simplest activities — getting on the bus or train, ordering dinner --- required their cellphones,” Srigley reports.
Thus, one of his 2018 students wrote, “After a few days, I feel OK without my phone. But I guess it is only fine if it is for a short period of time.”
That’s probably truer for all of us than we would like to admit (承认).
12. Why did Ron Srigley carry out the 2014 experiment?
ATo see if cellphone use influenced students’ study.
B. To find out how addicted students were to cellphones.
CTo study how to apply mobile technology to teaching.
D. To test what students would do with their cellphones in exams.
13. In what way did the two students change without their cellphones?
A. They began to care for family members. B. They spent more time on their homework.
CThey learned to write down important messages D. They had better face-to-face communication with their parents.
14. What can we learn about the students from paragraph 4?
A. They became much more productive. B. They learned how to manage time wisely.
C. They paid more attention to their classmates. D. They became more independent of their parents.
15. What did the 2018 experiment find out?
A. Most people didn’t admit overusing cellphones
B. People became more dependent on cellphones.
C. Putting cellphones down wasn't as hard as was thought.
D. Giving up cellphones had fewer benefits than was expected.
