The world’s largest study about sleep was launched in June 2017 and within days more than 40,000 people from around the world participated in the online scientific investigation, which includes a questionnaire and a series of cognitive (认知的) performance activities.
“We really wanted to figure out the sleeping habits of people around the world.Obviously, there have been many smaller sleep studies of people in labs but we wanted to find out what sleep is like in the real world,” says Adrian Owen.“People who logged in gave us a lot of information about themselves. They told us things like which medicine they were on,how old they were, where they were and what kind of education they’d received because these are all factors that might have contributed to some of the results.”
About half of all participants reported typically sleeping less than 6.3 hours per night, about an hour less than the study’s recommended amount. One shocking fact was that most participants who slept four hours or less performed as if they were almost nine years older.
Another surprising discovery was that sleep affected all adults equally. The amount of sleep associated with highly functional cognitive behavior was the same for everyone, regardless of age. Also, the harm associated with too little,or too much, sleep did not depend on the age of the participants.
“We found that the best amount of sleep to keep your brain performing its best is 7 to 8 hours every night. We also found that people who slept more than that amount were equally harmed as those who slept too little,” says Conor Wild,Owen Lab Research Associate and the study’s lead author.
- Where did the study take place?
A.In a hospital. B.In a university. C.In a lab. D.On the Internet.
5. What may affect the result of the study according to Owen?
A.Professions. B.Education. C.Hobbies. D.Diet.
6. Which of the following is right according to Wild?
A.Sleeping too much is as bad as sleeping too little.
B.Sleeping too little can make people look older.
C.Different people need different sleeping hours.
D.People must sleep for eight or nine hours every day.
7. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Most people have sleeping problems in the world.
B.Owen and Wild were the first experts to study sleep.
C.Lack of enough sleep is a common problem.
D.People attach great importance to having enough sleep.

When Kevin Durant gave his tearful MVP speech in 2014, the NBA star made sure to thank one person who had been there with him from the very beginning: his mother. His heartfelt words about the sacrifices she made for Durant and his brother led to a lifetime movie about her journey as a single parent, The Real MVP: The Wanda Durant Story.
Today, the NBA superstar’s mom travels the country as a motivational speaker and philanthropist (慈善家). On Monday, she spoke at Thomson Reuters’ in New York about her personal struggles to achieve financial stability and shared the financial advice she gave her son when he entered the league with CNBC.
“I wanted him to realize he has worked hard,” she says, “And it is OK for him to enjoy himself because of his hard work. But it is also imperative that he prepares for his future.” While she advised him to enjoy the rewards of his labor, she also wanted to make sure that her son knew the importance of financial planning.
She told the audience that when she found herself a single parent to two children at 21, she couldn’t follow the financial principles. Rather than planning for the future, she focused only on how her money could make ends meet for that moment.
Recently, Durant has teamed up with Laurene Powell Jobs for a new philanthropic program called College Track which is aimed at helping disadvantaged kids attend college. As part of the program, Durant has committed to donating $10 million to his hometown’s public school system.
Durant’s mom says that in addition to his financial decisions, she is proud of his philanthropic work and his desire to help the community. “I thought giving back was always very important, and so we talked about that and he had seen that from us as a family and it’s one of the things that I taught him,” she says.
8.What is The Real MVP: The Wanda Durant Story mainly about?
A.Durant’s career path. B.Durant’s hard childhood.
C.Durant’s mother’s devotion to the family.
D.Durant’s mother’s struggling to be independent.
9.What does the underlined word “imperative” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Enjoyable. B.Important. C.Unusual. D.Hopeful.
10.What made Durant pay attention to the charity program ?

C.Spending less money and saving for the emergencies.
D.Donating money to the charity and helping more schools.

A robot created by Washington State University ( WSU) scientists could help elderly people with dementia( 痴 呆) and other limitations live independently in their own homes.
The Robot Activity Support System, or RAS, uses sensors installed in a WSU smart home to determine where its residents are. what they are doing and when they need assistance with daily activities. It navigates (定位) through rooms and around obstacles to find people on its own. provides video instructions on how to do simple tasks and can even lead its owner to objects like their medication or a snack in the kitchen.
"RAS combines the convenience of a mobile robot with the activity detection technology of a WSU smart home to provide assistance in the moment, as the need for help is detected,"said Bryan Minor, a postdoctoral researcher in the WSU School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
Currently, an estimated 50 percent of adults over the age of 85 need assistance with every day activities such as preparing meals and taking medication and the annual cost for this assistance in the US is nearly S2 trillion. With the number of adults over 85 expected to triple by 2050, researchers hope that technologies like RAS and the WSU smart home will relieve some of the financial strain on the healthcare system by making it easier for older adults to live alone.
RAS is the first robot researchers have tried to incorporate into their smart home environment. They recently published a study in the journal Cognitive Systems Research that demonstrates how RAS could make life easier for older adults struggling to live independently.
"While we are still in an early stage of development, our initial results with RAS have been promising." Minor said.“ The next step in the research will be to test RAS' performance with a group of older adults to get a better idea of what prompts, video reminders and other preferences they have regarding the robot.”
12. How does RAS serve elderly people?
A.Through sensors. B. Through objects.
C. Through a mobile robot. D.Through their daily activities.
13. What can we know about RAS?
A. It can locate people and do any task. B. It is the first robot used in daily life.
C. Its function remains to be tested. D. It can cook for owners on its own.
14. What's Minor's attitude toward the future of RAS?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Optimistic. D. Uncertain.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Elderly people leave the nursing home. B. Older adults have benefited from RAS.
C. RAS, the first robot to make home smart. D. Smart home tests first elder-Care robot.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项
Be a green child
What does it mean to be green? “Green” is more than just a colour. 16 Why green? Plants are green, and without them the Earth wouldn't be such a lovely home for us human beings. What can we do? Here's a four-step guide to being green.
Reduce it!
17 For instance, a shorter shower means you use less water and less fuel since your house uses fuel to run the water heater that warms up the water.
Reuse it!
Sometimes people call ours a “throwaway society”. It means that we're always throwing away old stuff and buying new stuff. 18 For instance, if your baby brother becomes older and loses interest in his plastic basketball hoop(篮球框), why not give it to another family who has a little kid?
Recycle it!
Recycling has never been easier. Many communities will pick it up right in front of your house and some towns even require it. Recycled goods go to a recycling centre, where they can be turned into new cans, bottles, and paper.
Enjoy it!
It's true that rubbish and pollution are problems, but the Earth remains a huge and beautiful place that's ready for you to explore. 19 Go for a hike, visit local nature centres and gardens, and climb up mountains.
But before you travel the globe, take a look at your own backyard. Is there a spot where you could plant a tree or put in a little fruit or vegetable garden? 20
A.It also means taking special steps to protect the environment.
B.Many times, even if you no longer need something, someone else just might.
C.You can start locally by visiting the naturally beautiful spots in your city.
D.Turn off the water when you're brushing your teeth.
E.Get out there and get your hands dirty.
F.You can watch with pride as your tree takes root and your garden plants grow.
G.When you use less of something, you do a good thing for the Earth.

作文范文
Dear manager,
I am Tom, one of your customers. I am writing to lodge a complaint about the poor quality of your product. The experience in your shop is a bitter disappointment to me.
For one thing, the TV I bought the other day from your company turned out to be a fake, which ruined your good reputation. For another, when I went to your shop for an explanation, the salesperson behaved in a rude manner, turning a deaf ear to my requirement.
It is required that I should get a replacement, or I should receive a full refund. Thank you for your attention and I am looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Lihua
