Nobody was watching Ahmed Hafnaoui at the beginning of the swimming race. But all eyes were on the 18-year-old Tunisian(突尼斯的)teenager at the finish.
“When I touched the wall and I saw myself first, I just couldn’t accept that—it was too unbelievable,” said the teenager, who became the unexpected winner of the 400-meter freestyle at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Sunday.
When asked how he kept his lead, he simply said, “I don’t know. I just put my hand in the water. That’s it. ”The swimmer seemed at a loss for words. Shaking his head, he said, “It’s a dream that has become true. ”
Hafnaoui came into the race with the slowest speed of the eight swimmers—but he touched the wall first, beating out Australia’s Jack McLoughlin by just 0.16 seconds. Kieran Smith from the US took bronze(铜牌), about a half-second behind the winner.
The teen is the North Africa country’s fourth Olympic gold winner. He’s the second-youngest athlete from an African nation to win a swimming gold; Joan Harrison of South Africa was 16 when she won the 100 backstroke(仰泳)at the 1952 Helsinki Games.

Shops were in ruins, houses flattened, and entire villages were destroyed in what’s being described as one of the worst flooding disasters to hit Western Europe in more than two centuries. More than 165 people have been killed, while dozens of others remain missing after a record rainfall caused dams(堤坝)to burst and rivers to overflow into towns and streets across western Germany, Belgium, as well as parts of the Netherlands, Switzerland and northern France.
In Liège, Belgium’s third-largest city, water from the Meuse River overflowed Thursday evening into parts of the city center, so city officials had to call for the people to move out of the area or go to higher ground.
“I’ve never seen anything like this in my 81 years,” said Pierre Fouillen, an old lady who came to her home Friday morning to check the damage. “This may be the worst flooding disaster our country has ever known. ”
Dutch soldiers are sent to the southern city of Limburg as rivers are expected to burst their banks. After more than two months’ worth of rain in just 24 hours, officials are preparing for more rain Thursday, but dryer weather is expected by the weekend.

In the town of Schuld, houses were destroyed, and dozens of people were missing. Transport has also been badly affected by the rain. Most railway services running through central and western Germany have been put off, resulting in traffic jam on the nation’s highways. Parts of southern and eastern Germany have also been hit by flooding.
The flooding has made climate change a hot topic for Germany’s upcoming elections(选举)in the fall. Armin Laschet, the most promising candidate(候选人)from North Rhine-Westphalia, called an emergency meeting Friday, for whom the flooding will become a serious test of his leadership.

Would you wear a dress that tells people that they’re standing too close to you? Or how about a shirt that changes color when it senses a change in your feeling? Those are actual creations Dutch designer Anouk Wipprecht has been working on for 20 years.
When she was 14 years old, Anouk Wipprecht started making women’s clothing. By 17, while in a design school, she decided to create something she’d never seen. One of her most notable designs is named “Spider Dress”. On the shoulders of the dress, there are long spider-like tentacles(触手)that move with the help of sensors and micro robots. It measures the intimate(亲密的)space(less than 20cm), the personal space(35cm), the social space(50cm)and the public space(more than 100cm)of the wearer. Whenever somebody unfamiliar comes into the personal space, it starts warning. That 3D printed design has been tried by models and shown around in the US and the world, including China, Russia and Holland.
When COVID-19 hit, Wipprecht created her “Proximity Dress”, which she called a very fashionable(时尚的)way to use sensors to keep social distance. This white dress looks unassuming so nobody can see anything special about it. But it balloons out when someone gets too close.
Right now, she’s working on the “Moody Wearable” that shows the wearers’ feelings like anxiety and sadness. “We live in a time when a lot of people start getting into anxious mode. But they might not want to speak about it. So, my designs might create a situation that these things become more discussable and help them feel less stressed. ” Wipprecht explains.
32. A stranger should stand at least ______ away from the “Spider Dress” wearer.
A. 20cm B. 35cm C. 50cm D. 100cm
33. What does the word “unassuming” underlined in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Pretty. B. Expensive. C. Funny. D. Ordinary.
34. What is Wipprecht’s purpose in designing the “Moody Wearable”?
A. To protect the wearers. B. To test her new technology.
C. To keep social distance. D. To serve as a conversation starter.
35. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Health. B. Fashion. C. Environment. D. Photography.

You’ve signed up for classes. You’ve learned your way around your new school. 36 . Here are some of the best tips you can try.
Get a plan and actually use it
You’ll have a lot going on in high school. 37 . Use your plan to control your schedule. Write everything down: your classes and homework. Let your schedule help you find small windows of time to knock out smaller tasks.
Learn how to take notes
The act of writing down what you’ve learned helps organize information in your brains. Then do you know what should be written down?
Listen to and observe your teachers carefully and they will show you what information should be written down. For example, they would say “This is going to be on the exam. ” or they might raise their voice, repeat themselves or write things on the board. 38 .
Don’t just put information into your brain
The most common study methods are re-reading textbooks, re-reading notes, and highlighting. 39 ,because they only help you remember the information. Only when you actually organize concepts(概念)and create a better structure for what you’re learning, you can really make sense of what you’re trying to learn. For example, you can write down two things you remember as soon as you finish a lecture or a reading. Then explain the information to a friend or classmate to test your understanding.
