“I feel unlikable, lonely and hopeless,”said Lisa, a bright teenager from a loving home. “It seems that nobody wants to become my friend. What’s wrong with me?”
Like Lisa, many of us experience loneliness. The truth is that all people, no matter what their age or character-even the most outgoing, wealthy and popular—experience loneliness at least sometimes, It’s healthy and natural to want to be around people who care. After all, we’ve all heard “No man is an island.” That’s true. We all need others in our lives.
Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, explains that if we want friends, we must be friendly and reach out to others. But it has risk. Because we are often afraid of rejection(拒绝),many of us are unwilling to reach out to others. We take a safer way and wait for others to make friends with us. But if we want friends, we’ve got to get beyond this.
If making friends is your goal as well, you need to consider taking some measures(措施).
Be willing to take the initiative(主动权). If you see someone whom you would like to know, don’t wait for her to make the first move. Get close to her and begin a conversation. Let her know in a non-aggressive(无攻击性的)way that you are interested in being friends with her.
Reach out to those who are lonely. When you see someone at school sitting alone, go over and talk to her. And don’t let popularity decide whom you reach out to. You’ll often be surprised at the beautiful qualities behind a shy appearance.
Ask questions. Start your first conversation by asking this possible friend what she likes to do or asking about her family. Be sure to ask questions that cannot be replied with “yes” or “no” For example, don’t ask “Do you have a dog?” Instead, say “So, tell me about your pets.” Avoiding asking “yes” or “no” questions makes your possible friend not end your communication with a one-word answer.

A,To set a sad tone. B. To introduce the topic.

A. Popular people are often easy-going.
B. Just waiting for chances will help you make friends.
C. A proper manner is important in making friends.
D. Shy people are hard to talk to.
7. Why does the author suggest not asking “yes” or “no” questions?
A. It is considered unfriendly. B. It will leave a bad first impression.
C. It shows the poor quality of the speaker D. It isn’t good for keeping a conversation going.

My senior years, I can’t believe it is almost over. Now when I look back, it was stressful, but exciting, the ball, graduation, and then of course, college.
I started applying for my college months before Christmas. My parents told me it would be smart if I set up interviews and tours. But I wasn’t motivated. I wanted to go to college, but I didn’t want to deal with the stress.
As the days flew by, my applications lay on my desk just as I had left them three months before. “You are wasting valuable time,” my parents complained. Sweeping away the gathered dust on the applications, I worked on them every Sunday until I finished. Next came writing the essays. I had many ideas, but every school had different requirements. I changed them until I was pleased. Finally, everything was underway.
Now I just had to wait. In March, I started receiving letters of rejection. I began to think that I had set myself up for disappointment. I had a letter from Salem State College starting that they wanted to see my grades before they made their decision. Yes! At least someone wanted to consider me. At the beginning of April, I received a letter from Keens State. Those opening words: “We regret to inform you...” made me sit down and cry. I had lost all hope. Then I heard from Plymouth State. Not my first choice, but...I had been accepted. Maybe if I get my grades up, I can choose another school...
The college application hurt me deeply. All my friends had dozens of schools to choose from, I guess my parents were right High school grades are undoubtedly important to your future plans. If I could do it all over again, I would take it more seriously.

A. the writer didn’t go to a college B. the writer thought senior years was easy
C. the writer didn’t desire to go to college. D. the writer didn’t prepare interviews actively
11. Why was the writer rejected by many colleges?
A. He didn’t choose a good college. B. He got bad grades in senior years.
C. He wanted to deal with the stress. D. Every school had different requirements.

A team of researchers from the University of Queensland, WCS, and other organizations, doing a first-of-its-kind analysis(分析),found that Indigenous(土著)Peoples’ lands are important to the survival of thousands of species of threatened and endangered wildlife.
Publishing their results in the journal, Conservation Biology, the team found that 2,175 mammal(哺乳动物)species have 10 per cent or more of their ranges in Indigenous Peoples’ lands. Of those, some 646 species have more than half of their ranges within these lands.
Until this study, information on species composition(组成)within Indigenous Peoples’ lands worldwide remained largely unknown. Although the maps of Indigenous Peoples1 lands are still incomplete, the data used are the best available. It is clear that the maps used in this study reflect only a small part of Indigenous Peoples, lands worldwide which further strengthens how important the protection of those lands and the recognition of the rights of Indigenous Peoples are to the protection of biodiversity(生物多样性)worldwide.
The study shows that Indigenous Peoples and their lands are important for the long-term persistence(持续)of earth’s biodiversity and ecosystem services. Indigenous Peoples’ lands cover over one-quarter of the Earth’s surface, an important part of which is still free from industrial-level human effects.
Said the study’s senior author, James Watson of WCS and University of Queensland: “These results show just how important indigenous lands are for protection of mammals. As the biodiversity crisis grows, we must recognize that a necessary part to stopping the loss is greater recognition and support for Indigenous Peopled rights to and relationships with their land.”
Across the planet, WCS works with Indigenous Peoples and local communities to achieve a shared wish for a more secure and bright future, where wildlife remains a visible(可见的), increasing, and culturally valued part of the wild places where our partners live and we work.
12. What does the author intend to tell us by data in Para. 2?
A. Many species are in Indigenous Peoples’ lands.
B. Indigenous Peoples are kind to mammal species.
C. Indigenous Peopled lands are suitable for farming.
D. A large number of mammal species are in danger
13. What does the author think of the maps of Indigenous Peoples’ lands?
A. Valuable. B. Unknown. C. Reliable. D. Classical.
14. According to James Watson, what can we know about Indigenous People?
A. They will be fully protected in future.
B. Their rights to their lands will be improved.
C. Their relationship with their lands will be down.
D. They will be easier to respond to biodiversity crisis.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. What to Do With Indigenous Peoples’ Lands
B. How Important to Protect Indigenous Peoples’ Lands
C. To Protect Environment, Protect Indigenous Peoples’ Lands
D. To Save Wildlife from Extinction, Protect Indigenous Peoples’ Lands
