In cities and the countryside, you can see hanging lanterns decorating street lights, public buildings and shops. Long ago, Adana lived in a small village in Africa. Everyone in the village had jobs to do, and the villagers depended on one another. When Adana turned ten, her mother let her come around.
“Adana, it is time for you to take your place in the village. You shall be the water girl. Each morning, we need you to go down to the spring, fill these buckets(桶) with water, and bring them back to the village before noon.”
Adana took pride in being given such an important job. She picked up the yoke(扁担)with the buckets, flung it over her back, and walked to the spring. When she arrived, she took a drink and then filled the buckets with clean, cool water. Adana looked at the sun. It was nearly noon and she knew the villagers were depending on her.
She turned to a water girl from a nearby village and asked, “How long will it take to carry this water back to my village?”
The girl thoughtfully replied, “If you go slowly, it will not take very long. But, if you go fast, it will take you all day.”
Adana listened and thought about what the girl had told her. She didn't believe the girl, and she climbed back up the bank and headed down the path toward her village. Adana started off slowly, but increased her speed with each step. Soon, she was slowly jogging back towards her village. Halfway home, she stopped to take a little sip of water. When she did, she saw that the buckets were only half full. Water had been sloshing out(洒出) along the path as she traveled.
Disappointed, Adana went back to the spring. Once again, she filled the buckets with nice, clean water. Then, she walked slowly back towards the village.
When she arrived, her little sister asked, “How long does it take to carry water back from the spring?”
Adana smiled and said, “If you go slowly, it will not take very long. But if you go fast, it could take all day." Adana's little sister listened, but thought that was strange. Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said,“ The British are the only people who like to be told how bad things are.” This is definitely true of British comedy. Most people think humor is about happy things, but for the British, the opposite is true. We love to use our cruel sense of humor to complain and be negative(消极的).
British comedy, for example, draws a fine line between comedy and tragedy(悲剧).BBC's The Office is a TV show, famous for its dry humor. The main character, David Brent, is a foolish man, and the show's comedy comes from his delusions( 幻想). For example, he often tells himself that he is loved by everyone but the audience(观众) can see that everyone hates him.
Stupid characters for the audience to laugh at are an old tradition in Britain. In Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night, the character Malvolio is an old man whom people play tricks on. The audience will laugh away, although the reality is that this man is a truly tragic individual.
This side of British humor can be seen in friendships as well. At university, my friends and I would always laugh at each other. I had an American friend who thought this would make us quite upset. She didn't realize that in Britain, the better friends you are with someone, the more you laugh at them.
Our special humor-we laugh at everything-may sound rather strange, but it played a big part in British history. In World War II, along with the ability to stay calm, the British got through it by laughing. What else was there to do?
If you receive such British humor, you may feel like crying. ▲ Just as the saying goes, “Laugh and the world laughs with you; cry and you cry alone.”
52. wrote this article.
A. An American B. A Chinese
C. An Englishman D. A Frenchman
53. How is British comedy different from other types?
A. It is often surprising and boring.
B. It often laughs at human nature.
C. It often makes people feel depressed.
D. It is often about negative things.
54. Which of the following sentences can be put in the ▲ ?
A. Just cry and don't care about others.
B. But it's best to just laugh it off!
C. Just calm down and learn from it!
D. But be careful not to be noticed.
55. We can learn from the passage that________.
A. people from other countries probably can't enjoy British humor

Terrible weather events are harming the planet, and experts warn of even greater results to come. During the latest“ Climate(气候)Action Summit(峰会)”in the UK,the government has promised to cut the country's greenhouse gas emissions(排放) by at least 68% by 2030 compared with 1990 levels. The new goal tries to encourage other countries to pull together to make better climate plans, and stronger plans are needed to meet the goal of controlling global warming to 1.50 ℃.
According to the data from the WMO(世界气象组织),temperatures on the Antarctica(南极洲) just hit 18.3℃, which is higher than the record of 17.59℃ in March,2015. What's worse, temperatures in this area have warmed about 3℃ over the last 50 years. Although such temperatures might be considered pleasant for a picnic or a hiking trip, this is the Antarctica we are talking about. It is home to the most inhospitable environment on the planet because it is supposed to be an extremely cold place. In fact, the average(平均的)temperature of the continent's central area is -57 ℃. As a result, the sea ice loss and the Arctic ice melting(融化) caused by climate change have increased much in the last ten years, which have pushed down the number of polar bears and seals because polar bears depend on sea ice for hunting seals.
Besides, many places experienced the awful weather last summer. Australia has undergone its worst drought(干旱) since the 1930s, leaving bushfires burning so long and causing many deaths. At the same time in Europe, crops in the northwest suffered the driest weather in the past 80 years. West Texas in America also has gone through its worst drought in more than 70 years, while floods(洪水)have hit Eastern and Southern China.
“Climate change is bad for us human beings, which causes direct health problems. I'm afraid there will be more common events like the one that 30,000 to 50,000 persons died in Europe in 2003 because of the heat wave there,” an expert said. “It will also cause more air pollution, diseases and shortage of clean water and so on.”
Therefore, it is clear that far more action will be needed to slow down the planet's warming. There's no doubt that the best way to stop this planet from overheating is through technological and social solutions that reduce carbon dioxide(CO2) directly. Another effective way to fight global warming is to plant lots of trees, as a study has said. And there is enough space for new trees to cover 3.5 million square miles, which can absorb(吸收)greenhouse gas from industrial societies. However, it is not easy to think the world will suddenly start planting trees everywhere, although many groups have started. It's certainly a big challenge for us to deal with the climate change.
56.According to this passage, the number of the polar bears was brought down for many reasons EXCEPT
A. the Arctic ice melting B. climate change
C. the sea ice loss D. hunting
57. The underlined word "inhospitable" in Paragraph Two probably means_______ .
A. comfortable to live B. friendly to live C. unlucky to live D. unfit to live
58.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. The temperatures on the Antarctica hit the highest in March,2015.
B. Extreme weather led to wildfires burning in Europe last summer.
C. Climate change will cause problems like air pollution and diseases.
D. The best way to slow down the planet's warming is to plant flowers.
59. What is the main idea for this passage?
A. The whole planet is drier and drier.
B. The Antarctica is warmer and warmer.
C. Climate change is getting worse and worse.
D. The number of polar bears is smaller and smaller.
答案:【主旨大意】文章主要讲述了气候变化越来越糟糕,恶劣的天气事件正在危害地球。
56.D【解析】细节理解题。根据“As a result, the sea ice loss and the Arctic ice melting caused by climate change have increased much in the last ten years, which have pushed down the number of polar bears and seals because polar bears depend on sea ice for hunting seals”可知气候变化引起的海冰损失和北极海冰融化大大增加,因此,这些因素减少了北极熊和海豹的数量,不包括D选项,故选D。
57.D【解析】词义猜测题。根据“because it is supposed to bean extremely cold place”可知此处讲它是地球上最不适宜居住的环境,inhospitable不适合居住的,故选D。
58.C【解析】细节理解题。根据“It will also cause more air pollution, diseases and shortage of clean water and so on”可 知,气候变化会造成更多的空气污染,疾病以及水资源短缺等问题,故选C。

I have always admired students who hand in their homework on time and never forget to do it. Me, on the other hand...OK, I admit. I'm terrible at getting myself organized! But lately I've started keeping a small study diary. I write down everything I need to do and when it needs to be done by. Then I write a reminder(提示条) a few days before the date just in case. It's helping.
So I am wondering, what are your tips for getting organized? Post a comment below. I'm hoping
we can share some tips to teach us all better study skills.

Hana Good question, Amy. I always spend about five minutes at the end of the day tidying up the desktop on my computer. I make a backup(备份) of important documents. I delete things I don't need any more and put everything into the correct folder.
Gloria T he most important thing is to start studying a few weeks before the exams and not leave it until the night before! That's just common sense, I think.

Huw Thomas fell in love with Megan. But then an accident changed his life, and he had to move to Canada. Megan promised to write to him. But Huw never heard from her...until one day a letter arrived.
He saw the letter came from where he and his father had lived in their early years. Who was writing to him? He turned the envelope over in his hands several times. Then he took out the letter and read: Dear Huw,
I don't know if this letter will reach you, and I don't really know why I'm writing to you after all these years, but...
Huw turned to the end of the letter and saw:
Best wishes,
Megan
He couldn't believe it. He turned back to the first words of the letter and read:
...after all these years, but I’ve just found your letters to me from Canada. Believe me, this was the first time I'd read them and they made me cry, even after 50 years. I found them in a box of my father's papers. They were never opened.
Huw, I never knew that you'd written to me. I thought your new life in Canada had made you forget me.
Now I realize that my father kept your letters. I can still remember asking him if there was any letter for me and he always said“ ▲ , my girl. I told you he was no good.” Finally, after about a year I believed him.
But why did he keep the letters? Do you think he wanted me to find them when it was too late? Anyway, he's dead now, so I can't ask him. All I can say is I'm sorry. Sorry for what my father did, sorry that you never heard from me and sorry for...everything.
I hope that at least this letter reaches you. Of course, I’ll understand if you don't want to write back to me, but if you do, I am still Megan Jenkins, and I still live at the same address.
Best wishes,
Megan
Huw read the letter again. Everything with Megan came back to him. He had never forgotten her. He couldn't. Every day he looked at her face on the wall. He had a drawing of her. It had travelled everywhere with him. But to hear from her again...
“Are you all right, Dad?” asked Mike, coming into the room.

Over a third of one's life is spent sleeping with one's head on a pillow( 枕头).A good pillow, in its right height and composition, has important effects on one's sleep and health. A pillow in wrong height will hurt one's neck and cause pain to the head. Seventy percent of our planet is covered by one huge, continuous(连续的)body of seawater-the ocean. In 2008,the United Nations set June 8th as World Oceans Day.
It's a day to think about the important role that the oceans play in our lives, the dangers that our oceans are facing and the action we can take to protect them.
The ocean is home to the majority(大多数) of plants and animals on the earth. Marine(海洋的)
plants provide us with 70 percent of the oxygen( 氧气) we breathe. The ocean controls our climate, providing heat in winter and cool air in summer. It also provides us with food and medicine. No matter where you live on the planet, no matter how far from the sea, your life is dependent on the ocean.
The most urgent( 紧急的) problem facing the ocean at the moment is plastic pollution. Reducing single-use plastic, including plastic bags and plastic bottles, has been an important theme for World Oceans Day for a number of years.
Climate change and rising sea temperatures are also a huge problem. Rising sea temperatures have a direct influence on weather and are seen as partly responsible for an increase in extreme(极端的) weather conditions.
The day is celebrated in a variety of ways, including special events at aquariums(水族馆)and zoos, beach and river clean-ups, school activities, art contests and film festivals. You can join in to remind people about the importance of our oceans and to make a difference.

B. We have problems in protecting the ocean.
C. People set World Oceans Day to protect the ocean.
D. People celebrate World Ocean Day with various activities.

54. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Plastic pollution is the only problem the ocean is facing.
B. Plastic waste has a direct influence on weather.
C. The ocean is the home to all the plants and animals on the earth.
D. Beach and river clean-ups are ways to celebrate World Oceans Day.
55. What's the structure of the passage?
(① =Paragraph 1 ②=P2 ③=P3 ④=P4 ⑤=P5 ⑥=P6)
A.①②/③④/⑤⑥ B.①/②③④/⑤⑥

Whatever life threw at us each year, our family had one tradition at Christmas: our dog Pepper opened our presents for us.
Last year, everyone made it home for a Christmas get-together. However, it couldn't feel perfect because Pepper's health was becoming worse. Her life had already been longer than we expected-she was fourteen-and yet her mind was still sharp. Her love for life made us feel better. But her body could not keep up with her mind.
Probably it was Pepper's last Christmas, so we decided to make sure she would enjoy it. On Christmas Eve, we each prepared presents for her.
Soon, Pepper selected her first Christmas gift. She turned the present, just as she was a young dog once more. She pulled the paper off the dog treat before she chewed it slowly. Our family was so happy. Pepper saw the other three presents, and then turned to Mom as if asking, “May I open another?”
“Go ahead, girl!” Mom encouraged.
For the next few minutes, Pepper opened each of her Christmas presents. While she did, she reminded us of the joy of being together. Our family felt as a whole-not because we were in the same room or city, but because our love brought us together.
Pepper passed away after Christmas. Her peaceful passing made us tearful. Her passing was also a celebration of life, because she gave my family so much love and laughter.
I still treasure(珍惜) Pepper's final Christmas gift. She taught me that no matter where we each spend the holidays, the smallest act of sincere giving can unite our family through our love. For me, that knowledge is the longest-lasting gift of all.

We often describe someone who cannot keep, a secret as “having a big mouth”. It turns out that this might not be their fault.
According to Asim, a professor at Baylor College of Medicine, US, keeping a secret may well “become a difficulty”. This is because people often have an “obsessive(着迷的) and anxious need to share it with someone".
An earlier study, led by Anita, a scientist at the University of Notre Dame, US, suggested that keeping a secret could cause stress. People who were told secrets can suffer from depression(压抑), anxiety, and body aches, reported the Daily Mail.
But with secrets so often getting out, why do people share them at all? Asim explained that people often feel that it will help them keep a person as a friend. Another reason people share secrets is guilt (负罪感)over keeping it from someone close to them. A sense of distrust can develop when people who are close do not share it with each other. “Keeping or sharing secrets often puts people in a position of either gaining or losing the trust of someone," said Asim.
He added that talkative people could let secrets slip out(泄露).But this doesn’t mean that it is a good idea only to share secrets with quiet people. A quiet person may be someone who keeps everything inside. To tell such a person a secret may cause them stress, and make them talk about the secret. Asim said that to judge whether to tell someone a secret, you'd better ▲ .Think about how you would feel to be told that you mustn't give the information away. ①Earlier this month in Chongqing, 18 afterschool training companies were each fined(罚款)2.5 million yuan by the local government because of breaking educational rules. They taught students too difficult materials and lied in their ads. Even though the problems of these companies are clearly shown, it's quite surprising to see some students still go to afterschool classes. The reasons may be the wrong thoughts from the parents and students themselves.
②“There is no harm for kids to learn something difficult!” said Sun Ping, a mother who sends her 9-year-old son to a math afterschool class. Just like Sun, many other parents wrongly believe that learning something ahead of time can give their kids better test results.
③However, when students learn something too difficult, their brains can't understand the logic(逻辑)behind it. Instead, they choose to do rote learning to remember answers. That is to say, students just repeat answers mindlessly, so they lose the chance to develop logic thinking abilities. As more and more new knowledge comes in, they usually fall behind.
④Another wrong thought is from the students themselves. They may find their friends or classmates have afterschool classes and get good scores afterwards. Naturally, they think. “Maybe it's better for me to do the same and improve my scores as well.”
⑤However, these students may have forgotten that better scores come from better learning abilities and habits, not from longer learning hours. “If they do not want to learn at school, they won't learn during afterschool classes, either. ”a primary school teacher said.
⑥Now the reasons are clear. It's time to prevent students going to afterschool classes blindly. Parents and kids need to know their situation before making the decision to have afterschool classes. The local government should watch these companies carefully to prevent rule-breaking activities. Moreover, schools should improve learning and logic thinking abilities of their students, rather than just pay attention to scores of tests.
52.In Para.3,the word “do rote learning” means .
A.活学活用 B.举一反三 C.死记硬背 D.固步自封
53. The writer thinks students still go to afterschool classes because .
①some parents make their kids do so for higher test scores
②the local government has fined some afterschool training companies

A.②③ B.②④ C.①③ D.①④

As the human society develops, the need for power is increasing minute by minute. People used to build more and more normal power plants that burn fossil fuel( 化石燃料) to solve the power problems. However, these power plants use much fuel and have a high running cost. What's more, they cause heavy pollution. People need new kinds of power plants now.
Nuclear power plants(核电站) are a good choice, as they use nuclear energy to produce power. This means they cause 90% less pollution than normal power plants do.Solar(太阳) and wind power plants are also friendly to the environment, but building them may produce some rubbish. Water power plants are the friendliest to the environment because they hardly give out any pollution.
As for the need for fuel, normal power plants need the most. For example, a power plant in Datong, Shanxi burns more than 1,000 tons of coal in just one day. Nuclear plants, however, need much less fuel(only 0.01% of the fuel needed by normal ones). Moreover, water, solar and wind power plants use energy from the nature, so they don't need fuel at all.
However, there are also disadvantages about new kinds of power plants. Nuclear and water power plants have a stable(稳定的) power production, but solar and wind power plants don't. ▲ .As a result, they produce different amount of power at different time of a day
Building new kinds of power plants also meets many difficulties. Nuclear power plants need to be built in open areas, so mountains aren't good places. They can't be built near big cities, due to the danger of nuclear fuel. They need much water, so places near big rivers or seas are the best. Solar and wind power plants also need to be built in places with no mountains, because mountains may get in the way of the sunshine or wind.
56. Which of the following sentence can be put in the ▲ ?
A. Their power production depends on how much wind and sunshine they get
B. Their power production depends on how much fuel they burn every day
C. It's best to build nuclear and water power plants to solve power problems
D. It's best to build solar and wind power plants to solve power problems
57.According to the passage, it's best to build a nuclear power plant________.

I was very late that morning on my way to school. Usually at the beginning of school, I could hear the noise of children and the head teacher beat the table with the heavy ruler as he cried,“ Silence, please, silence!”
I was really afraid of being punished, So I hoped to be able to take my seat in all this noise without being seen. But that morning, the room was quiet and my schoolmates had already sat in order. How unusual it was, I thought.
As I entered, my head teacher looked at me kindly, and said,“ Go quickly to your place, little Franz.” I sat down at once at my desk. Just then I noticed, for the first time, that our head teacher wore his fine green coat and his black silk hat.
But what surprised me most was to see some villagers holding old French books, standing at the end of the room. All looked sadly at the head teacher.
“Children, an order from Berlin says no language but German may be taught here,” said the head teacher,“ Today is your last French lesson. I beg you to pay attention.”
My last French lesson! I hardly knew how to write French words, and 1 can never learn now. How I regretted the hours I wasted playing in the woods instead of studying!
I listened so carefully this class. When the bell rang, the head teacher rose from his chair.“My friends," said he, “ My friends, ..I...I...” But something stopped him; he could not finish the sentence. He returned to the blackboard, took a piece of chalk, and wrote in large letters,“ VIVE LA FRANCE(法兰西万岁).”
Then he stood against the wall, unable to speak. He signed with his hand. “The lesson is over. Go home, kids.”
Oh, I shall always remember that last lesson!

A Parade of Mummies
On the night of April 3rd, there was a very unusual celebration-a parade of mummies(木乃伊游行) in the streets of Cairo,Egypt(埃及).Over 20 kings and queens of ancient Egypt were carefully moved to their new home in the National Museum. The government has been planning the event for a long time.
The mummies were carried in trucks that look like ancient golden boats. Each truck had the name of the mummy inside written in Arabic, English, and the ancient Egyptian writing.
Since moving the mummies was a serious business, the streets for the 3-mile trip had been rebuilt to keep the ride smooth. Each truck also had special shock absorbers(减震器) to make the ride even smoother. Inside the trucks, the mummies were put into special cases to protect them from the air outside.
For over 100 years, the mummies have been kept in the Egyptian Museum. But over time, the museum has become too crowded to show them all. That's why Egypt held such an eye-catching event.

Students in Denmark take national tests on a computer at different times. About 4 years' test results, researchers found something interesting. Students who took the test in the morning scored higher than those who took it in the afternoon.
So what happens? We might have noticed that in the afternoon we become less productive(有效率)and the work we do is of lower quality(质量).A lot of people around the world experience the same thing every day. That's called the afternoon slump(低迷).
There's a reason why this happens. Our bodies are controlled by our circadian rhythm(昼夜节律) which is like a clock. It tells our bodies when to go to sleep and wake up. Our energy levels change with the circadian rhythm.
We are smarter and more energetic during some parts of the day, while during others, we are less energetic. For example, during the night we experience a large drop in energy, especially between 2 a.m. to 4 a.m.However, our energy slowly rises after waking up until it reaches a peak(峰值)in the late morning. But that peak is then followed by an afternoon low, which we call the afternoon slump. The low appears about seven hours after waking up, which is usually between 1 p. m. to 4 p. m. for most people. This is the time when people make more mistakes during the daytime. When the afternoon slump is over, it rises again. But as our body gets ready for sleep, it slowly drops.
. ▲ Stretching(拉伸)for even 20 seconds, taking a break for about 15 minutes, eating a bar of black chocolate and so on can have a huge influence on your energy levels. Hopefully, you have a better idea about the afternoon slump and what we can do about it.

Ancient Chinese people used to tell time by looking at the moon at night. Chinese lunar calendar, also called “Nong Li", is based on the movements of the moon. The new moon appears on the first day of each month and the full moon comes out in the middle of the month. The cycle lasts for about 30 days-a month.
For Chinese people, the moon not only serves as a useful helper, but is also connected with brightness, expressing the beautiful wishes of the Chinese.
Every year as the Autumn Moon is full, Chinese people get together under the night sky in admiration. It has grown into a tradition ever since Tang Dynasty. Celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, Mid-Autumn Day is the second most important in China, after the Spring Festival. It's also an occasion(场合)for eating moon cakes and lighting lanterns. After nightfall, the whole family would look up at the full moon, thinking of their nearby relatives or friends, as well as those who are far from home.
Many people are drawn to the moon's mystery and beauty. So, it's not surprising that the moon has been one of the most important inspirations to Chinese poets. In some of the poems, the moon carries the wishes towards purity(纯洁)and beauty. Others show the longings(渴望) for family and love. ②This is quite common in China. According to the 2020 Mental Health Blue Book,95.5% of primary school students sleep less than 10 hours, and 90.8% of middle school students sleep less than 9 hours in 2020.
③The reasons why students are short of sleep are quite different. “I sleep less as I want to get higher grades, and higher grades often means heavier schoolwork. "said Ma Yue, a tenth-grader.

Is there more to life than being happy? How can we each live more meaningfully? I find that there are four pillars(支柱) of a meaningful life.
The first pillar is belonging. It means you're valued for who you really are, and you value others as well. So don't check your phone when someone's talking to you, or walk by someone you know without Saying hello. These acts make others feel you don't care about them. Just take a moment to talk and treat each other with warmth. ① With a sense of belonging, you can create a bond(纽带) that cheers each of you up.
For some people, belonging is the most important one. For others, the key to meaning is the second pillar: purpose. Now, finding your purpose is not the same thing as finding a job that makes you happy. It is about using your power to serve others. Without something worthy to do, people have no goals. ② .
The third pillar of meaning is above the physical self: transcendence(超然).Transcendence are those moments when you're lifted above the busy daily life, your sense of self disappears and you feel connected to a higher reality. ③ For one person, transcendence may come from seeing art in a museum. For another person, it is at church. For me, it happens through writing. Sometimes I get so attracted to the story I am writing that I lose all sense of time and place.
Now, the fourth pillar of meaning often surprises people-storytelling, the story you tell yourself about yourself. Creating a story from the events of your life brings clarity(明晰). ④ But your life isn't just a list of events. You can make improvements to your story and retell your story.
Happiness comes and goes, but having meaning gives you something to hold on to.
56._______ is about using your power to serve others.
A. Belonging B. Purpose C. Transcendence D. Storytelling
57. The sentence “It helps you understand how you became you.” may best fit_________.

For most people, graduation is an exciting day. But my graduation day was not.
I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had traveled from across the country to watch our class walk across that stage. But like everyone else in my graduating class, I had watched the economy(经济)turn from bad to worse in my fourth year of university. We graduates had degrees(学位),but very few had job chances. I knew that the next day I would no longer have a place to call home.
I knew my small university town couldn't offer me any chances, so I drove to southern California to find work. But what I thought would take a week lasted for two weeks , and then four weeks, and I found myself in the same situation as I was in before.
Do you know that feeling when you wake up and you are full of fear? Fear about something you can't control. You hope that everything that has happened to you so far is just a bad dream. So what did I do to stay calm? I wrote. Something about putting words on a page made everything seem a little clearer and brighter. Something about writing gave me hope. Sometimes a little hope is all you need! I turned my scary feelings into a children's book-about a surprising hero who simply refused to give up his dream.
Then one day, without a writing degree in the writing world, I was offered a publishing deal(协议) for my first book! After that, things slowly began to fall into the right place. I was offered a second book deal. Then, a few months later, I got an interview from a big company and got a good job.

When scientists go to a forest to study monkeys and their habits, how do they know who's who?
In the past, scientists had to make marks on each of the animals to tell them from each other. But now there is a much easier way thanks to facial recognition technology(人脸识别科技).
A research team from China's Northwest University is using facial recognition technology to identify(识别)thousands of snub-nosed monkeys(金丝猴)that live on Qinling Mountain in Shaanxi Province.
Similar to human facial recognition, the technology that is used to identify monkeys uses their facial
features to create a database(数据库) that includes every monkey,Xinhua reported.
“When the system is fully developed, we can connect it with cameras set up in the mountains. The system will recognize the monkeys, name them and record their habits,” said Zhang He, a member of the research team.
“For each snub-nosed monkey, we have 700 to 800 image pictures, and the recognition result is 94 percent right,” Zhang added.
“We used mobile phones and small cameras with the monkeys in tests about 3 to 10 meters away from them," said He Gang, another member of the research team. “There is no need to interfere with the life of the monkeys.”
Compared to humans, facial recognition technology for monkeys is more difficult because of their hairier(多毛的) faces. The color of their hair causes them to hide in their environment. These make it harder for computers to identify them.
“It is also difficult to take clear pictures and videos of them because the monkeys are much more lively than humans, so we need to improve the system," said Li Baoguo, leader of the research team. Although meeting many difficulties, scientists believe, with the development of the facial recognition technology, they will successfully identify every monkey in the near future.

Thank you for these tips. They help me very much. But I'm taking an English exam(speaking) this Friday and I'm a bit scared about it. I can't stop being nervous, so in this condition I always say something wrong with long pauses(停顿). Can you suggest me anything to deal with it?
9th April,2021-10:14 Jo
Hi Forever-in-dream,
Thanks for your comment(评论). OK-first thing to remember is that everyone gets nervous for speaking exams. It's totally natural to feel nervous. Also, it's normal to make some mistakes. The examiners will not expect you to do the exam perfectly and they will get a good idea about your level of English even if you make some mistakes. If you make a mistake and you realize right away, then go back and say it again. We all do this sometimes even when we are speaking our native(本土的) language. Also it's normal to pause and think when you're speaking in your own language and in a foreign language, so try not to worry about that.
So, take a deep breath before you start the exam and remember that these feelings are natural. In fact, feeling a bit nervous sometimes helps you to do your best.
Good luck! Jo(Learn English Teens Team)

On March 20th,2021,the Sanxingdui site(三星堆遗址)in Guanghan, Sichuan drew the world's attention. Chinese archaeologists(考古学家)have found more than 500 cultural relics(文物)in six pits(坑) at the site, which dates back over 3,200 years.
The Sanxingdui site, which was first discovered by a farmer in 1929, is believed to be the site of the ancient Shu Kingdom(蜀国). The kingdom was a center of civilization(文明) along the Yangtze River.
In 1986,archaeologists discovered two pits. They believed they were used for large sacrificial ceremonies(祭祀仪式). At that time, over 1,000 relics were found.
The discovery of Sanxingdui raised an important question about the origins of Chinese civilization. The ancient Shu civilization that built Sanxingdui is believed to be one of the earliest examples of Chinese civilization. The site, along with the Liangzhu and Shijiahe sites along the Yangtze River, shows that the birthplace of Chinese civilization might not have been only along the Yellow River Basin (流域)in north China.
The newly-discovered relics are similar to those found in 1986, and they further support the idea that the pits were used for sacrificial purposes.
New kinds of cultural relics have also been dug up. For example, experts found a kind of ancient bronze jar(铜罐子)that was used for holding water or wine. They also found a jade(玉)relic commonly found at 5,000-year-old Liangzhu Archaeological site in Zhejiang Province.
“These relics show that the Sanxingdui site had a close connection with Central China, but it also marks an ancient civilization in Sichuan with strong creativity,” said Chen Xiandan, a member of the excavation(发掘)project.

C. A Chinese archaeologist discovered the first Sanxingdui relics.
D. The Sanxingdui site was built by the ancient Shu civilization.
53. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Pits. B. Archaeologists.
C. Ceremonies. D. Relics.
54. What is the Chinese meaning of the underlined word “origins” in Paragraph 4?
A.起源 B.后果 C .发展 D.创新
55. What do the newly-discovered relics suggest?
A. More than 1,000 relics were found in Sanxingdui since 1986.
B. Sanxingdui was found earlier than Liangzhu Archaeological site.
C. Sanxingdui is more important than the sites in north China.
D. The civilization in the ancient Shu Kingdom was creative.

If a friend helps us, it's a good idea to write him a thank-you note. But in fact, how many of us sit down to do this?“People hardly walk around giving thanks to people quite often,” Professor Kumar said. Why don't people like to send thank-you notes? And how do people feel when they get one?
Kumar and his team asked some students to write a thank-you note to another person by e-mail. Then they asked both the writer and the receiver about their feelings. Here is the result.
They found that these writers didn't like to write the notes because they thought they had to think too much about them. They worried about what to say and how to say it. The receivers, however, felt enjoyable when they got the notes. “When you are a receiver, you really care about the warmth of the
note.” Kumar says.
Also, the writers didn't like to write the notes because they thought it might be awkward for the receiver to get a thank-you note. But in fact, it's not true. “They feel quite happy,” Kumar says, “They don't really feel awkward. If people knew that writing a thank-you note could be so important to others, they would do it more often.” Kumar says.
In a word, simple and small changes in our everyday lives can make a big difference in how we treat other people and how we feel.

It is inevitable(不可避免的)that students will make mistakes. Some teachers think punishing(惩 罚)students is the most effective(有效的) way for them to learn their lessons. Others choose a more moderate(温和的) way, like a face-to-face talk. I support the second.
In my opinion, punishment, especially physical punishment, will harm the students mentally(精神上). The students are likely to feel very ashamed( 羞耻的).Their confidence(信心)may get lost as a result. They may end up locking themselves up and refusing to communicate with even their best friends. In such a situation, it will be very difficult to encourage them to open up again.
Furthermore, punishment is likely to cause additional misunderstandings between the teacher and the student. For example, my cousin once disturbed(打搅,扰乱)his teacher in class by talking to another student. The teacher only punished him instead of both of them. He believed the teacher to be partial towards students with better grades. Little by little, he started to dislike this teacher.
To help students learn lessons from their mistakes, there are many better methods for teachers to use than punishment. Here are some suggestions:
①Both the student and the teacher should calm down and then discuss the problem together.
②The teacher should give the student a chance to express his or her thoughts on the problem. In this way, the student may also be more willing to follow the teacher's advice.
③The teacher and the student can reach an agreement. For example, if the student promises not to make the same mistake again, the teacher can promise him or her a reward(奖励).
44. According to the writer, if a student gets physical punishment, he or she may_________.
A. understand the teacher
C. follow the teacher's advice
B. lose the confidence
D. learn some lessons

A.部分的
B.热情的

The COVID-19 has affected the world. Recently scientists have been meeting online. But not all of them are discussing the virus. Some are discussing climate(气候)change. The use of fuel(燃料),like oil and gas,is causing the earth to warm up. The rising temperature changes weather patterns(模式) across the earth. This causes climate change.
Pollution levels drop during lockdown(封锁期).
Right now, people are not using as much fuel. They are driving and flying less. Pollution has decreased(减少) in many countries, such as the United States, India and China, This is because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A pandemic is a worldwide outbreak of a disease.
The changes in pollution levels won't last long. Scientists say China's pollution decreased between February and March last year. This is because factories stopped running during the lockdown. As the country reopens, though, the pollution is expected to increase again.
Scientists are hoping to find ways to deal with climate change in the long term. They are looking at how people's behavior has changed. They are also looking at the way the governments respond.
. ▲ .
Some people say that the outbreak is reason to make changes in how we deal with climate change. They say progress that was made with the environment could be lost.
Kenneth Gillingham is a professor at Yale University. He says the pandemic has affected renewable energy. This is energy that can be collected from renewable resources(资源).These include sunlight and wind. “There's a slowing down of building new solar( 太阳能)farms,"he says.“Some projects are hitting the pause(暂停) button. Other projects may not happen for a long time.”
Scientists hope people can realize that the energy problem is also serious and pay more attention to renewable energy.
Changing Human Behavior Is the Key.
People know that the pandemic is a threat(威胁). But scientists want people to understand that climate change is a big threat, too. Scientists see a connection between humans and natural disasters. These include hurricanes(飓风)and fires. But most people feel disconnected from climate change.
Scientists hope people will learn how the pandemic and climate are connected. Dr. Aaron Bernstein is a professor at Harvard Medical School. He says there is hope in the way the world has responded to the pandemic. For example, people have changed their behavior. They are wearing masks and keeping a safe distance with others. He thinks people can change their behavior to help with climate change, too.
