A grundbreaking new study finds that cffee beans are bigger and mre plentiful when birds and bees team up t prtect and pllinate (授粉) cffee plants.
Withut these winged helpers, sme traveling thusands f miles, cffee farmers wuld see a 25% drp in crps, a lss f rughly $1,066 per acre f cffee. That's imprtant fr the $26 billin cffee industry-including cnsumers, farmers, and crpratins wh depend n nature's unpaid labr but the research ges beynd that.
The study in the Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences is the first t shw, using real-wrld experiments at 30 cffee farms, that the cntributins f nature -- in this case, bee pllinatin cmbined with pest (害虫 ) cntrl by birds - are larger than their individual cntributins.
"Until nw, researchers have typically calculated the benefits f nature separately, and then simply added them up,which actually underestimates the benefits bidiversity prvides t agriculture and human wellbeing,” says lead expert Alejandra. “But nature is an interacting system, full f imprtant synergies (协同). We shw the eclgical and ecnmic imprtance f these interactins in ne f the first experiments in actual farms."
Fr the experiment, researchers dealt with cffee plants acrss 30 farms, excluding birds and bees with a cmbinatin f large nets and small bags. They tested fur key situatins: bird activity alne, bee activity alne, n bird r bee activity at all, and finally, a natural envirnment, where bees and birds were free t pllinate and eat insects like the cffee berry brer, ne f the mst damaging pests affecting cffee prductin wrldwide. The cmbined psitive effects f birds and bees n fruit set, fruit weight and fruit unifrmity —key factrs in quality and price --were greater than their individual effects, the study shws.
“Birds, bees, and millins f ther species supprt ur lives and livelihds, but face threats like habitat destructin and climate change," says Alejandra. "One imprtant reasn we measure these cntributins is t help prtect the many species that we depend n, and smetimes take fr granted.”

When elderly peple stay active, their brains have mre f a class f prteins that enhances the cnnectins between neurns (神经元) t maintain healthy cgnitin (认知), a UC San Francisc study has fund.
"Our wrk is the first that uses human data t shw that synapse prtein regulatin (突触蛋白质调节) is related t physical activity and may drive the beneficial cgnitive utcmes we see," said Kaitlin Casalett,PhD,an assistant prfessr f neurlgy and lead authr n the study. The beneficial effects f physical activity n cgnitin have been shwn in mice but have been much harder t demnstrate in peple.
The prject tracked the late-life physical activity f elderly participants, wh als agreed t dnate their brains when they died. Maintaining the integrity f these cnnectins between reurns may be vital t fighting against mental disrder, since the synapse is really the site where cgnitin happens. Physical activity — a readily available tl -- may help bst this synaptic functining.
Casalett fund that elderly peple wh remained active had higher levels f prteins that facilitate the exchange f infrmatin between neurns. This result agreed with the earlier
finding that peple wh had mre f these prteins in their brains when they died were better able t maintain their cgnitin late in life.
"It may be that physical activity generates a glbal sustaining effect, supprting the healthy functin f prteins that facilitate synaptic transmissin thrughut the brain," Casalett said.
The brains f mst lder adults stre pisnus prteins that are the marks f mental illnesses, and the prteins can cause synapses and neurns t fall apart. "In lder adults with
higher levels f the prteins assciated with synaptic integrity, this effect that leads t mental diseases appears t be weakened,” she said. "The study shws the ptential imprtance f maintaining synaptic health t supprt the brain against mental diseases like Alzheimer 's."
    12. What helps elderly peple keep cgnitive ability accrding t the study?
    A. Prteins prduced during physical activity.
    B. Bdy tissues with healthy chemical substances.
    C. A certain cnnectin between the brain regins.
    D. A type f neurn frmed while they're thinking.
    13. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
    A. Mental diseases may affect synaptic health.
    B. Lw levels f prteins help t prevent Alzheimer's.
    C. Synaptic integrity safeguards brains against mental illnesses.
    D. The brain can autmatically break dwn the pisnus prteins.
    14. What 's the purpse f the text?
    A. T present- a research result.
    B. T give practical advice.
    C. T tell an interesting stry.
    D. T slve an academic prblem.
    15. What can be the best title f the text?
    A. Breakthrughs Have Been Made in the Field f Neurns
    B. Casalett Makes Achievements in Studying Human Brains
    C. Ways Are Created t Ensure the Physical Health f the Old
    D. Exercise Changes Brain Chemistry t Prtect Aging Synapses
