It was New Year time, but I wasn’t looking forward to it. That winter, my mother and my stepfather moved our family to Southern California. My brother and I were leaving our rural Alabama behind. This would be our first New Year away from Alabama. My mother took to California like a swan to a royal lake. My athletic little brother, Paul, was keyed up at a climate that allowed him to go to the beach whenever he wanted.
I, however, was a fat child with heavy southern pronunciation. My first day in the new class, I introduced myself in a low voice. The moment I opened my mouth to speak, the whole class burst into laughter, “He talks funny.” It was so frustrating that I went to place a call to Granny Smith after school, who was my biggest support, But I didn’t get through.
On Sunday evening, the phone rang. It was Granny. She often took advantage of the discounted long-distance rates on Sundays. She said she’d shipped a New Year package. Sure enough, it arrived. Surprised at the box, large enough to hold a small refrigerator, we eagerly tore it open. The smell of Granny’s house filled the room: a combination of fried meat, sausages, furniture polish and decorations. Her house was tiny and always filled with tacky holiday decorations and homemade food before New Year. But in my childhood eyes, it was precious and fantastic.
There were countless tins and containers. We open hem to discover piles of holiday treats. She even included our traditional candy bats. The box was as bottomless as a magical box. There, beneath all these, was familiar holiday.
Every New Year that we spent in California, the postal service would call and say our package was arrived. Over the years, many treasures arrived in the box. For me, it’s always been the best part of the holiday.
24.How did the author’s brother feel when they were moving to California?
    A.Indifferent. B.Joyful. C.Appreciative. D.Disappointed.
25.Why did the author’s classmates laugh at him?
A.He spoke in a low voice. B.He made a humorous talk.
C.He looked overweight. D.He had a strong accent.
26.What does the underlined word “tacky” probably mean?
    A.Suitable. B.Expensive. C.Cheap. D.Attractive.
27.Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A.Granny’s Care Package B.An Unforgettable Holiday
C.Our Move to California D.A Telephone Call from Granny

Alex Wong, a junior at Mark Keppel High School in Alhambra, California, is working hard on his application to a top college. His resume shows off his nearly straight A’s in difficult classes, experience at a summer program at Stanford University, Eagle Scout project and time on the soccer team as well as the school choir. But his steady progress stopped unexpectedly this year. Aiming to open access to college-level Advanced Placement (大学预科) courses, his school began using a computer-based lottery to give out spaces. Alex got shut out of all three of the courses he requested.
The new system caused anger among families whose children failed to get into AP courses, which many consider important to develop advanced skills, improve grade-point averages and allow students to earn college credit, saving them and their families tuition dollars. Students and parents wrote to administrators to complain, circulated a petition (请愿) and launched a Facebook group for trading classes. “I’M DESPERATE! I’LL GIVE YOU FREE FOOD,” one student, Kirk Hum, posted on the 210-member AP Flea Market Facebook group.
AP classes have long been held dear by the most talented and ambitious students. But now they are seen as positive for all students who are willing to push themselves – and schools are increasingly viewing access to them as a basic educational right. But this change has brought challenges.
Miracle Vitangcol, a junior at Downtown Magnets High School with average grades and test scores, is failing her AP US history class. She said she can’t handle the rapid pace and volume of material she needs to remember. But she said she intends to stick it out because the class is teaching her to manage her time, take good notes and work hard. “I’m struggling to adjust,” she said. “But I keep telling myself: ‘It’s OK. You can do it. Just push yourself’.”
Some critics worry that the open-access movement is pushing too many unprepared students into AP classes, as shown by higher exam failure rates over the last decade. They also fear that open enrollment (录取) policies are encouraging teachers to weaken courses and give out high grades to students who don’t deserve them. “While expanding access is generally a good thing, we need to make sure we’re not watering down the experience for the high achievers,” said Michael Petrilli, executive vice president of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, a Washington-based educational policy organization.
28.The purpose of the new AP courses system at Alex Wong’s school is to ?
A.make sure all students get access to the AP courses they desire.
B.ensure that students have a fair chance to get access to AP courses.
C.improve the academic performance of students in AP courses.
D.separate high achievers from average students through the new courses.
29.According to the article, the AP Flea Market Facebook group is a place where ______.
A.students’ parents send their complaints to school administrators.
B.students share tips about saving money for college.
C.students offer items to trade for the AP courses they need.
D.students can find support and guidance on their AP study.
30.Which of the following statements would Michael Petrilli agree with?
A.Opening AP courses to all students is a bad idea.
B.School administrators should maintain high academic standards for AP courses.
C.High schools should stop charging students for taking AP courses.
D.Access to AP courses is necessary for students applying for top American colleges.
31.The author used Miracle Vitangcol’s example to show that ______.
A.students need to remember too much in their AP courses.
B.AP courses pose a big challenge to unprepared students.
C.the secret to success in AP courses is to keep pushing yourself.
D.average students don’t deserve their places in AP courses.
    D
If you’ve ever had a dog, you know just how deep a connection you can develop with “man’s best friend”. But a dog has a much shorter life span — about 12 to 15 years long — than humans, which means every dog owner has to go through the heartbreaking moment when their loving pet passes away.
Why not make a clone of that dog then? This is the solution offered by a South Korean company, Sooam Biotech Research Foundation. The company has successfully cloned at least 400 dogs, mostly for US customers, ever since it pioneered the technique in 2005. Now, Sooam Biotech is planning to introduce their business to UK dog owners, offering them dogs that look just like their lost ones.
Meanwhile, another dog is selected to supply an egg. Researchers then replace the DNA in the egg with that from the skin cell and implant the egg into the womb (子宫) of a female dog. The egg grows into a puppy over the following two months. To clone a dog, researchers first need to take a skin cell from a living dog or one that has just died.
The whole process takes less than a day, but it comes at a shockingly high price — around £63,000 (614,000 yuan). But if you can’t afford it now, you can also save the cells in a laboratory and access them at a later date. Just like identical twins of humans, they share the exact same DNA but there will still be small differences between them. “The spots on a Dalmatian clone will be different, for example,” Insung Hwang, head of Sooam Biotech, told The Guardian. However, as magical as cloning might sound, there is no guarantee that the cloned dog will be a perfect replica of the original one.
Dog owners will also have to accept the fact that personality is not “clone-able”. Apart from genes, personality is also determined by upbringing and environment, which are both “random elements [that] cloning technologies simply cannot overcome”, Professor Tom Kirkwood at Newcastle University, UK, told The Telegraph.
Perhaps bringing our dogs back with cloning is not the best way to remember them after all.
Kirkwood, a dog owner himself, pointed out: “An important aspect of our relationship with them is coming to terms with the pain of letting go.”
32.According to the article, Sooam Biotech Research Foundation is ______.
A.working on plans to help dog owners enjoy their pets longer
B.offering a way to help dogs give birth to more puppies
C.providing a service that will make copies of pet dogs
D.introducing a completely new technique to clone dogs
33.Which of the following statements about dog cloning is TRUE according to the article?
A.Dog cloning technology hadn’t been put into practice until recently.
B.Dog cloning is very expensive and usually takes several months to complete.
C.Dog cloning is very popular among US and UK pet owners.
D.Cloned dogs might develop different habits and characteristics even though they look very similar.
34.Which of the following shows the correct order of the dog cloning process?
    a. an egg is taken from another dog b. a skin cell is taken from the pet dog and saved in a laboratory
    c. the egg is placed in the womb of a female dog d. the DNA of the egg is replaced by the DNA from the skin cell e. the egg grows into a puppy in two months
    A.acbde. B.adbce. C.bacde. D.badce.
35.We can learn from the article that Kirkwood ______ dog cloning.
    A.disapproves of B.Supports C.is afraid of D.is curious about
    第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps. 36  And one should always live in the best company, whether it is of books or of men.
A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today as it always was, and it will never change. It is one of the most patient and cheerful companions.  37  It always receives us with the same kindness; instructing us in youth, and comforting us in age.
38  There is an old proverb, “Love me, love my dog.” But there is more wisdom in this:“Love me, love my book.” The book is a truer and higher bond of union. Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author. They live in him together, and he in them.
A good book is often the best container of a life keeping the best that life could think out, for the world of a man's life is, for the most part, the world of his thoughts.  39  They are remembered and cherished, thus becoming our constant companions and comforters.
Books possess an essence of immortality(不朽).They are by far the most lasting products of human effort. Temples and statues decay, but books survive. Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author's minds, ages ago. What was then said and thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed page. The only effect of time is to knock out the bad products.  40
A.We feel as if we were in a measure actors with them in the scenes which they describe.
B.Nothing in literature can long survive but what is really good.
C.The book is a living voice and an intellect to which we still listens.
D.The best books are treasuries of good words and the golden thoughts.
E.Men often discover their shared interest by the mutual love they have for a book.
F.There is a companionship of books as well as of men.
G.Book does not turn its back upon us in times of hardship or sadness.

    第二节(满分25分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Four men once came to a wet place in the roadless forest to fish. They cast their tent upon pine-clothed rocks. On sweet-smelling branches they slept the sleep of unsuccessful fishermen, for the sun made them lazy and the rain made them wet in turn. Finally they ate the last bit of bacon and the last wonderful cake.
Immediately a little man volunteered to stay and hold the camp while the remaining three should go miles to a farmhouse for supplies. They looked at him dismally (沮丧地). “There's only one of you — the devil is your brother,” they said and disappeared down the hill. Then night came and the three had not returned. The little man sat close to the campfire and added branches. Suddenly he heard the coming rustle (沙沙声) of the dead leaves. The little man arose slowly to his feet, his clothes refused to fit his back, his pipe dropped from his mouth, and his knees struck each other. “Hah!” he cried. A low voice replied and a bear paced into the light of the fire. The little man supported himself upon a tree and recognized his visitor — a bear.
The bear was obviously an experienced fighter, for its fur had become deep yellow with age. There was confidence in his small pace and in his shining eyes. It rolled back its lips and exposed its white teeth. The fire enlarged the red of its mouth. The little man had never come across the terrible animal before and was too scared to breathe. “Ah!” The bear interpreted this silence as a gladiator (角斗士). It approached cautiously and slowly. As it came near, the boots of fear were suddenly upon the little man's feet. He cried out and then ran around the campfire. “Ho!” said the bear to himself, “this thing won't fight — he runs. Well, let me catch him.” It started strongly around the campfire. The little man screamed and ran violently. Twice around they went.
Paragraph 1:In desperation the little man flew into the tent.

Paragraph 2:The little man went into giggling (咯咯笑).

    第四部分 写作
    第一节
    【示例】
    Dear friends,
It’s a great honor for me to introduce our national treasure — the panda.
The panda is a world-famous wild animal born in China. It only inhabits the forests in the west part of China. It has lived on the earth for over 8,000,000 years. Although they have fat figures, pandas are better at climbing trees than any other animals. The favorite food they depend on for living is bamboo shoots.
Pandas like drinking much water, so when finding water, they’ll drink like crazy. Originally, the name “panda” was given by a Frenchman. As is known, the panda is the symbol of luckiness and friendship, and the messenger of peace. Finally and interestingly, the panda tends to lose its temper easily when disturbed.

The bear drew the coat into the tent and took two bites, a punch and a hug before he discovered his man was not in it. After a short break, a roar came from the tent. The bear had disturbed the center pole and brought a chaos of canvas upon his head. With a crash fell the tent.
Paragraph 2:The little man went into giggling. The trapped monster failed to rid himself of the tent. Then came the three men. They saw their tent approaching. The three men dropped their supplies and hurried to one side, their eyes filled with fear. Rolling around in the place for a while, the bear was too tired to move. Immediately, the three fear-stricken individuals ran to catch it. At this point, the little man sprang at them. “My brother come to see you,” he shouted.
