As a kid, I often got nosebleeds. My parents blamed all the fruits I ate that gave me excessive heat- especially the mangoes, my favorite. It didn't stop me from wolfing them down by the dozens.

As Ive grown older, my fixation on exotic奇异的 fruit has intensified-the weirder, the better. The disadvantage of being an armchair pomologist果树栽培学家 in Canada is that most of our fresh fruit is imported. The silver lining is that almost everything in my local stores qualifies as exotic and interesting. Trying a new fruit expands my understanding of the world and enriches my experience within it. What lasted is what the soul ate, Jack Gilbert once wrote, The way a child knows the world byputting part by part into his mouth. I think of these lines when I prepare to eat a new fruit. Eachtasting is a chance to be reunited with my inner child, to be wide-eyed and wordless as I get to know it.

Those tasked with naming these fruits appear to be equally under a spell, producing names as simplisticas they are charming. Cotton candy grapes. Ice cream bean. Dragonfruit.

Most fruits I try only a couple of times, but there's one I keep returning to: the soursop. At ideal

ripeness, the soursop tastes like the ideal tropical fruit. Wait just a day, though, and it smells more like feet than fruit. This rapid rot comforts me, incredibly. Watching a beloved fruit transform from unripe one to sticky flesh feels like witnessing an act of living. The plant sacrifices fruit in hopes of spreading its seed; life was always the point. An approaching expiration date is only encouragement to enjoy these accessible joys as they come. We, too, will soon find our bodies softened and bruised. Will we have let our sweetest days go to waste?

    24. Why does the author like exotic fruit?

    A. She is a famous pomologist.     B. It helps broaden her horizons.

    C. It reminds her of her hometown.    D. She only likes strange-looking fruit.

    25. What does the author think of the fruit names in Paragraph 3?

    A. Funny.   B. Useful.   C. Appealing.   D. Powerful.

    26. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?

    A. Never judge a book by its cover.

    B. Time and tide wait for no man.

    C. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

    D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

    27. What's this text mainly about?

    A. Benefits of eating fresh fruit.

    B. Memories of the carefree childhood.

    C. Explorations of the natural world.

    D. Experiences of trying exotic fruit.

    C

Left to their own devices, most children won't hesitate to lick a doorknob or wipe a runny nose with their sleeve. But is there any truth to the idea that their affection for getting dirty can be beneficial to their health?

That theory dates back to the 1800s, when European doctors realized that farmers suffered fewer allergies than city residents. However, it didn't gain widespread attention until 1989, when British epidemiologist David Strachan discovered that youngsters with older siblings were less likely to be infected than other kids with hay fever. Strachan suggested that early childhood infections transmitted by insanitary contact helped foster a strong immune免疫的system.

His theory, called the hygiene hypothesis卫生假说, provides a convenient explanation for why allergies and autoimmune disorders, have increased 300 percent or more in the US since the 1950s. Maybe Western societies have become too clean for their own good, and parents too fearful of a little dirt. As microbiologist Graham Rook notes, getting a bit messy can help cultivate the thousands of microbial species that call the body home and keep it healthy. Providing that boost can be as easy as having pets, tending chickens, or playing in a green space.

Its also wise to go easy on the antibiotics抗生素. Although they can be lifesavers for patients with severe bacterial infections, there's a real risk of harm from overuse, says John Lynch, a doctor at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Regaining your native microbiota can be extremely hard, " he explains. All this is not to say youngsters should be messy. You definitely want them to wash their hands regularly, and cleaning high-touch surfaces is vital to avoid unpleasant infections like norovirus, Rook advised. Just don't go overboard and kill the bacteria on everything. As it turns out, kids probably do need a few germs to stay healthy.

    28. What does the underlined word insanitary mean in Paragraph 2?

    A. Unclean.   B. Wide.   C. Risky.   D. Protective.

    29. Which of the following may be explained by the hygiene hypothesis?

    A. Dirt-free houses’ reduce fever in children.

    B. Some farmers are highly allergic to flowers.

    C. Being too clean leads to increased allergies.

    D. A virus infection causes autoimmune disorders.

    30. What is John Lynch's attitude to the use of antibiotics?

    A. Cautious.   B. Supportive.   C. Critical.   D. Indifferent.

    31. What might be Rook's advice for parents?

    A. Leaving high-touch surfaces dirty.

    B. Allowing kids to play in the garden.

    C. Replacing kids' pets with artificial ones.

    D. Making the playrooms absolutely clean.

Fish genetically engineered to glow 发光 blue, green, or red under blacklight have been a big hit among aquarium 水族馆 lovers for years. But the pet is not restricted to glass displays anymore. The glowing fish have escaped fish farms in southeastern Brazil and are multiplying in the streams in the Atlantic Forest, a new study shows.

The unwelcome invaders入侵者are well-known to scientists who have used zebrafish for developmental and genetic studies. Native to Southeast Asia, the freshwater fish were engineered to glow for research purposes in the late 1990s by putting in them genes from jellyfish and coral. In the 2000s, companies saw the potential of the glowing fish as pets.

André Magalhães, a biologist at the Federal University, first spotted the engineered zebrafish swimming in the River Basin in 2015. The waters border the largest decorative fish farms of Latin America, and Magalhães says the fish probably escaped some of the farms' ponds.

The Brazilian waters dont have any local predators捕食者for zebrafish and the fish are reproducing all year round, with a peak during the rainy season. But the transgenic fish seem to achieve sexual maturity earlier than their ancestors, which allows them to reproduce more and spread faster. The invaders are also eating well: a diversified diet of native insects and algae. Before long, Magalhães says, the fish could become plentiful enough to directly affect local: species by competing for food or preying on them.

Tuckett, a researcher in Florida, says the Brazilian detection should be a wake-up call for fish producers and natural resource managers in Brazil. But he suspects the transgenic fish will encounter predators as they move to larger bodies of water. And the animals' bright colors will make them disadvantaged.

For now, the glowing fish could be considered little weeds growing up out of the concrete. Tuckett says. Magalhães likes the metaphor, but points out that even little weeds can grow to cause a lot of damage.

    32. What can we know about the glowing fish?

    A. They were released into the ocean.

    B. They carry genes from other species.

    C. They don't enjoy popularity any more.

    D. They were first created for commercial use.

    33. Why do the glowing fish multiply rapidly?

    A. There are few species feeding on them.

    B. They mature as early as their ancestors.

    C. They prefer to reproduce in the rainy season.

    D. No other species compete with them for food.

    34. What might Tuckett agree with about the escaped glowing fish?

    A. They will grow in large numbers.

    B. They will pose a great threat to nature.

    C. They will be easy targets for predators.

    D. They will ease the worry of fish producers.

    35. Which of the following can be the best title for this text?

    A. Transgenic Fish Invades Brazilian Streams

    B. Escaped Species Are Unwelcome in Nature

    C. Genetically Engineered Fish Are in Demand

    D. Zebrafish Travels Far to Colonize Other Waters

High school graduation marks a huge turning point in a young person's life. It's a transition from

childhood to adulthood, and you'll remember that moment forever.

Daverius Peters, a senior at Hahnville High School in Boutte, Louisiana, had been lookingforward to this special day for a while. However, when he arrived at the graduation ceremony, a school representative blocked him from entering the ceremony's venue because his black sneakers violated the dress code.

The school's graduation dress code states that male students must wear dark dress shoes to the ceremony and no athletic shoes were allowed.

When the school representative denied him entry, Peters went into shock. He also felt sad, imagining what his parents would think if he couldn't attend his own graduation. He just wanted to walk across the stage and get the diploma he'd worked so hard for.

With only minutes until the ceremony was set to begin, he felt hopeless. He neither took the phone with him nor had enough time to stop at a store to buy new shoes. As he paced anxiously outside the convention center, he spotted a glimmer of hope. He'd noticed a familiar face, John Butler.

Butler helps mentor 指导 students at the high school, and many students look up to him. Butler always did what he could to help the students. He's just that type of person. When a student's having a bad day, Butler calls them out of class to personally talk with them. He had a daughter graduating with Peters, so he was attending the graduation ceremony as a parent that day. Peters ran over to Butler and explained his shoe problem.
