Young people are often unhappy when they are with their parents. They say that their parents don’t understand them. They often think their parents are too strict 156 them.
Parents often find 157 difficult to win their children’s trust and they seem to 158 how they themselves felt when they were young.
For example, young people like to do things without much 159 It’s one of their ways to show that they grow up and they can 160 any difficult problems. Older people worry more easily. Most of them plan things ahead and don’t like their plans to be changed. So when you want your parents to let you do 161 , you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.
Young people often make their parents angry by clothes they wear, the music they enjoy and something 162 .But they don’t mean to cause any trouble. They just feel that 163 this way they can be cut off from the old people’s world and they want to make a new culture of their own. And if their parents don’t like their music or clothes or their way of speech, the young people feel very sad. Sometimes instead of going out with their parents, they just want to stay at home 164 and do what they like.
If you plan to do something, you’d better win your parents over and get them to understand you. 165 , your parents will certainly let you do what you want to do.

Dear children,
How time flies! As your teacher, I'd like to talk about "behaving like a grown-up" with you before you leave school.During our lives, we need the strength of other people to achieve our goals. 166 of us can make it on our own.
In an 167 world, we would all have thoughtful, helpful people to guide us in life. Imagine having a 168 who is devoted to keeping you healthy. Or imagine having a boss who wants you to enjoy your job and make progress in your 169 But many of us have difficulty dealing with (打交道) grown-ups who seem 170 in their changeable moods. If we have immature(不成熟的) adults 171 trustworthy adults around us, we will certainly get into real trouble.
What's more, if we are always 172 that we're right all the time, while others are wrong, then we are like those immature adults. Our own personalities could be the 173 .
A mature adult is someone who makes problems better, not worse. When this type of people face a bad 174 , they try to find ways to be calm and in control. They keep practicing solving problems 175 they become members of mature adults.
Maybe you're now too young to behave like a mature adult. When you run across a problem, try to stay calm and think more before taking actions, then you're really on the way to be a grown-up.
Yours faithfully, Vivien

Earth is about 75% water. But most of that water is salty. Only about 2.5% of Earth’s water is fresh water — the kind we can drink and that plants need to grow. Much of Earth’s fresh water is locked up in ice caps. In all, just 1% of Earth’s water can be used for washing, drinking, cooking, and watering crops.
In some countries, people don’t usually worry about having enough clean, fresh water. People just turn on a faucet(水龙头) and there it is. In some countries, though, water is scarce(稀缺的). People in Africa, Asia, and Latin America have serious water shortages.
What causes water shortages? In some places, well water is being used faster than wells can refill. In other places, droughts — long periods without enough rain—mean there is not enough water. Some parts of the United States are now having water problems because of drought. Evaporation(蒸发) is a big problem in some parts of the world. When the sun shines on water, the water turns into vapor(水蒸气) and rises into the air. The water is gone before it can do any good. The ground becomes dry. Nothing can grow. Not all fresh water is safe to drink. Water in wells, lakes, and rivers may have bad things that cause illness. When water is dirty, it can be dangerous to drink. Dirty water is making children sick. It is dangerous to get a drink or even wash your hands.
But the news isn’t all bad. Mansoor Ali, who works for the United Nations, says water problems can be solved. Kids and adults are learning how to protect water and how to use it wisely.

I left my hometown in London last year and now I have enjoyed working in this small city in China. Learning a foreign language opens you up to the culture and history of a country. So in order to know more about China, I started to learn Chinese.
But at times, I found myself in funny situations. When I greeted strangers in China, they began to talk a lot and very fast. They asked me questions about everything. But all I could do was to look at them with a blank face. I had no idea what they were talking about. Were they just kind, funny or impolite? Many people want to make friends with me. But I am a bit upset when I find out the reason why they need a foreign friend. They just want to practice their English. I don’t need friends like these. I like friends to share my feelings and ideas with.
However, the more Chinese I learn, the more similarities I find it has with English. In English, “thick-skinned” is used to describe a person who doesn’t care about criticism (批评). I was surprised to find that houlianpi in Chinese means the same. And both languages share some common idioms (习语). For example, “look on with folded arms” means xiushoupangguan, and “burn the boats” is similar to pofuchenzhou.
I’m still on my journey to learning Chinese. I believe that sometimes you will have the most fun on a journey.

We used telephone calls, text messages and e-mails to communicate with friends. But these days, many of us like to communicate through social networking apps(应用程序) like QQ, WeChat and so on.

Would you like to have an electric car? Do you know this kind of quiet and clean cars run on electricity ?
In the future, more and more people will have cars, so the cars will be in great need. But the oil won’t keep up with the number of cars on the roads. So the price of oil will go up.
Electric cars aren’t perfect just yet. It can take eight hours to charge (充电) a car for only 100 miles of driving. How far that car travels depends on the weather and traffic.
Price is a problem, too. Electric cars cost much. The good news is that electric—car technology (技术) is getting better. As it does, the prices of this kind of cars are going down.
To charge the car, the US Department of Energy is paying for at least 10, 000 charging stations around the country. And it will cost about three dollars for each charge.
Now car-makers are looking for other ways to make the car cheaper. Then more people will use electric cars, and we have a clean and nice world in the future.

How can we think in English? I think the best way is to practice as what a football player does every day. During the practice, the football players pass the ball to his teammates over and over again, so they won’t have to think about passing the ball in the game, they will just do it. You can train yourself to think in English in this way. The first step is to think of the words that you use daily, simple everyday words like book, shoe or tree. For example, whenever you see a “book”, you should think of it in English, instead of in your language. After you have learned to think of words in English, you’d better go on to the next step — thinking of sentences in English.
Listening is very useful way to learn English. Listen first and don’t care too much about whether you fully understand what you’re hearing. Try to say what you hear as much as possible. The more you listen, the better you learn. After you reach a higher level, start having conversations with yourself in English. This will lead you to think in English.

Customs on Eating
Food in China and western countries is different. China has about 5,000 years’ history. They may spend half of their time on food. Chinese people choose food very carefully. They only use fresh materials(新鲜的材料)to make food. For example, they only eat fresh fish. Chinese have a lot of ideas for cooking. They can cook a chicken in over ten ways. That’s why Chinese food is so popular around the world. Western countries, like England or America, don’t have fresh food because they buy their food from supermarkets which only sell stored materials (储存的材料). Western people also prefer fast food like hamburgers and chips. They are unhealthy for man’s body. Western people do not have many skills for cooking, mostly they only boil, steam (蒸) and bake the food. By the way, western people are very good at making desserts and chocolate. They can make very good cakes and chocolate. These food are very sweet and they can make you become fat quickly.
In China, the person who invites other people for meal would pay for the meal, but it’s not the same way in western countries. In western countries, people will think you only invite them but don’t need to pay for them. They can afford it. They won’t be happy if you pay for them. In western countries like America or England, people will always give tips (小费) to the waiter after they finish the meal in a restaurant. If you don’t, the waiter will not be happy. In China this only happens in some top restaurants and hotels in large cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
Another difference in eating is that: Chinese people use chopsticks and western people use knives and forks.
Chinese people only have three meals during a day. But western people may have more. They usually have afternoon tea when they would have fruit, cakes or biscuits with cheese (奶酪饼干).

Mike and Dick work in the same office. They don’t like the cold weather. And one day they decided to take their holiday in Australia. Their plane arrived in Sydney at nine in the morning. They had a good rest in a hotel. The next morning they rented(租) a car in the city and began their travel. A few hours later the sun was shining in the sky and there were no shade trees(遮阴树) beside the road. It was so hot that they could hardly go on driving. They had to stop to look around. Mike found a river was about half a kilometer away from them. They were both very happy and drove the car quickly. Soon they got to the river. Before they jumped into the water, Dick saw a boy playing under a big tree. He asked,“Are there any sharks(鲨) in the river, boy?”“No, there aren’t,”answered the boy. So they began to swim in the river. After a while, Dick felt something hit against his leg. He told Mike about it. They were afraid and stopped swimming. Chinese noodles have a long history. They were first mentioned in the Eastern Han Dynasty(朝代), over 1, 900 years ago. At that time, noodles were called “cakes”. They were “cakes” that were boiled in water.
From the beginning of the Eastern Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, there were written records about noodles. “Mian” became the name of noodles in the Song Dynasty. Before that, there was no specific name for this kind of food. There are all kinds of noodles, such as cold noodles, warm noodles, and fried noodles. There are also all kinds of noodle—making methods, such as brushing, pressing, rolling and pulling.
China is where all noodles originated(起源), including the noodles, such as spaghetti(意大利面), that we thought came from other countries. In the Yuan Dynasty, Marco Polo came to China. He learned to make noodles, and then taught the method when he went back to his country. In 1912, the traditional Chinese method of noodle—making was brought to Japan. Japanese noodles were first called “Dragon Noodles”, meaning food eaten by the Chinese—the descendants(后代)of the Dragon.

Nature is our home, so we should not pollute it and hurt the wild animals. If you don’t cherish or protect it, we’ll have to pay for our indifference (冷漠). We have polluted the environment badly, such as the air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, waste pollution.
What’s more, we kill many wild animals. So the number of them becomes fewer and fewer. For example, in 2010, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)brought bad news that the world’s tiger population had hit an all-time low (最低纪录). There were just 3,200 tigers left in the wild, about half as many as there had been ten years before.
Now there’s good news: Tigers could be making a comeback. There were about 4,000 tigers in the world in 2019. In July, India, which has 70% of the world’s tigers, said that its tiger population had reached nearly 3,000. That’s a 30% rise in just four years.
India’s success was years in the making. In 2006, habitat (栖息地)loss made the number of India’s tigers reduce to only 1,411. So the Indian government decided to take a stronger plan of protection. Since its Wildlife Protection Act became law, India has given tigers a high level of protection. With the help of the protection, India created 50 reserves (保护区), where tigers can spread out and hunt (捕猎).
But challenges remain for tigers all over Asia. They are hunted for their skin, and their teeth are sold as medicine. They’re still in danger. So we should try our best to stop the animals dying out.
