A
Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are an integral part of sea life and sustain it by providing shelter and habitat to various organisms. They also supply and recycle nutrients as well as enable a growing fish population, along with other species, for a healthy and diverse ecosystem. However, the rise in average water temperatures due to climate change has resulted in more frequent and longtime “coral bleaching (珊瑚白化)” events that damage their health, causing fish and other sea species to abandon them.
In order to restore this delicate ecosystem, scientists from the U. K. and Australia conducted a study that involved using loudspeakers underwater near damaged coral reefs to make them sound healthy and attract fish, potentially kickstarting the natural recovery process of coral reefs and their dependent life forms. The location for this experiment was the Great Barrier Reef in the Coral Sea, found alongside the east coast of Queensland, Australia. The site is noted to have the largest coral reef system in the world.
“Healthy coral reefs are remarkably noisy places — the crackle of snapping shrimp and the whoops and grunts of fish. Young fish concentrate on these sounds when they're looking for a place to settle,” said Steve Simpson, study coauthor and a professor at the University of Exeter, U. K.
By using loudspeakers to copy such sounds, parts of dead coral reefs were found to attract twice as many fish, compared to places where no sounds were played. “These returning fish are crucial for coral reefs to function as healthy ecosystems. Boosting fish population in this way could help to kickstart natural recovery processes, preventing the damage we're seeing on many coral reefs around the world,” said lead author, Tim Gordon.
1.What causes the phenomenon of coral bleaching?
A.Diverse species. B.Noise pollution.
C.Fishing industry. D.Climbing temperatures.
2.What approach is introduced to recover the coral reefs?
A.Removing damaged coral reefs.
B.Using loudspeakers to keep fish away.
C.Building new homes for sea species.
D.Playing certain sounds to attract fish.
3.Why are Steve Simpson's words quoted?
A.To provide some findings of the study.
B.To show the progress of the experiment.
C.To explain reasons for the new approach.
D.To give another solution to the problem.
4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The attempts are in vain.
B.Natural recovery is impossible.
C.Initial success has been achieved.
D.The coral reefs have returned to normal.
B
I'm on the phone with a frustrated customer, and a note appears on my computer screen: You are speaking slower than usual. Speed up. I do, and the message disappears, only to be replaced with another: Continuous Speaking — Finish your thought.
This is Cogito, an artificial intelligence program designed to help customer service workers communicate more clearly, empathize (产生共鸣) with frustrated callers, and improve their overall performance. Cogito listens to the tone, pitch, word frequency and other factors in customer service conversations. When it detects something wrong — an irritated customer, a call center agent taking too long to respond — it displays a note on the agent's computer telling them how to improve.
For anyone who's spent hours of their lives stuck on the phone with an unhelpful or very rude customer service agent, Cogito may seem like a godsend. And some customer service agents using the software generally say they find it helpful. One employee says that Cogito helped her cut her average call time nearly in half, while another says it helped her speaking slow down.
Cogito has been launched to more than sixty call centers across the U.S. over the past year. The company behind the software, Cogito Inc., has raised more than $70 million.“We were 45 people a year ago,” says Cogito CEO Josh Feast, whose company now has 150 employees. At MetLife, managers say that the program improved customer satisfaction by 13%, and helped agents (who take an average of 700 calls a week) to have more “human” conversations.
Such software as Cogito is unlikely to stop at the meeting room. But like other enterprise software, it could soon spread well beyond call centers and other offices and into our daily lives.
5.What's the purpose of Cogito program?
A.To speed up customer service workers' speaking.
B.To store the conversations between customers and agents.
C.To improve customer service agents' communication with callers.
D.To complain of frustrated callers.
6.What can we infer about Cogito in Paragraph 4?
A.Cogito has been used by sixty call centers in the world.
B.The company behind the software benefits a lot from Cogito.
C.Josh Feast designed Cogito with the help of employees.
D.Customers weren't satisfied with MetLife's service without Cogito.
根据第四段第二句“The company behind the software, Cogito Inc., has raised more than $70 million.”
7.What's the future of Cogito according to the text?
A.It'll be part of our normal daytoday life.
B.It'll spread into other offices.
C.It'll tell humans what to do.
D.It'll replace customer service agents.
根据最后一段中的“... it could soon spread well beyond call centers and other offices and into our daily lives.”
8.Where is the text most likely from?
A.A novel. B.A brochure.
C.A guidebook. D.A magazine.
This morning I happened to meet a foreigner when I was taking walk in the park. It was a good chance for me to practise my spoken English, but I went up to him, introduced himself in English and expressed my wish to have a talk with him.
