Gap fillingClick for a friend? How would you feel if moving to a new town meant losing track of your friends What if         (如果……怎么办) the only way of getting     (get) news from faraway friends       (远方的朋友) was writing letters that took ages to be delivered(寄送)? This was how things worked not very long ago. Thanks to advances in technology               (多亏了科技方面的进步), how we make friends and communicate with             (和……交流) them has changed significantly          (重大地).Nowadays, we can move around the world              (环游世界) and still s            tay in touch with  (保持联系) the people that we want to remain friends with. Social media tools       (社交媒体工具) let us see what our friends are up to         (在做什么) and maintain          (维持) friendships. All you need is a wi-fi connection        (连接).The digital age       (数字时代) also enables   (使……能够) us to find people who share    (分享) our interests, such as collecting model cars        (汽车模型) or playing an unusual instrument        (不同寻常的乐器). Whatever our hobbies       (爱好), the Internet can connect us with       others who also enjoy doing them, even if        (即使) they live on the other side of the world. But when you “friend” people online, does this mean that they really are your friends? It depends        (看情况吧). If people always exchange         (交换) true personal information online, then yes, these friendships can be real and meaningful       (有意义的). But we need to keep in mind       (记住) that what we see on social media is often not the whole truth        (全部真相) about a person. On social media sites     (网站), people tend to        (倾向于) post      (发帖) only positive updates         (积极的近况) that make them appear happy               (使他们看起来幸福) and friendly. But smiling photos can hide      (隐藏) real problems. Remember the saying     (): on the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog. A young person could be old               (一个年轻人可能是老人); a woman could be a man; we could even be sharing our information with criminals     (罪犯).But this doesn’t mean that we should throw the baby out with the bathwater             (不分良莠一起抛弃). Although technology has changed the way we acquire       (获得) friends, the meaning of friendship and our longing for       (渴望) friends remain      (仍然是) the same. As        (正如) Aristotle said, no one would choose to live without friends, even if           (即使) he had all other goods. Gap fillingAfter Twenty YearsThe short story "After Twenty Years" is set in       (以……为背景) New York on a cold, dark night. Most people have left work to go home, and this part of the city is now quiet. A policeman who is checking       (检查) the area sees a man outside a shop. He goes up to the man and finds he has a scar   (伤疤) on his face. They have a chat       (聊天) and the man starts to tell his story. "Twenty years ago tonight, "said the man, "I dined      (吃晚餐) here at ‘Big Joe’ Brady's with Jimmy Wells, my best chum, and the finest chap in the world. He and I were raised       (抚养) here in New York, just like two brothers, together. I was eighteen and Jimmy was twenty. The next morning I was to start for the West to make my fortune You couldn't have dragged (拖;拽) Jimmy out of New York; he thought it was the     only place on earth. Well, we agreed that night that we would meet here again exactly       (exact) twenty years from that date and time, no matter what our conditions might be         (不论我们的情况如何) or from what distance        (距离) we might have to come. We figured       (认为) that in twenty years each of us ought to       (应该) have our destiny worked out               (命运定下来了) and our fortunes made, whatever they were going to be. ""It sounds pretty interesting," said the policeman.  "Rather       (相当) a long time between meets, though        (然而), it seems to me. Haven't you heard from         (收到……的来信) your friend since you left?""Well, yes, for a time we corresponded        (通信), "said the other." But after a year or two we lost track of            (失去联系) each other. You see, the West is a pretty big proposition, and I kept hustling        (hustle) around over it pretty lively. But I know Jimmy will meet me here if he's alive, for he always was the truest       (true), staunchest old chap in the world. He'll never forget. I came a thousand miles to stand in this door tonight, and it's worth       (值得的) it if my old partner turns up    (出现).
