New York City’s police department (NYPD) has decided to return a robot dog. Though the robot worked well, it upset many people. Some thought it was “scary”. Others worried that it would steal their personal information.
Spot is a dog-shaped robot built by a tech company. The robot has four legs, so it can move easily over the ground. Instead of a head, the robot has a camera. It also has a microphone and a speaker, and people can control it far away.
In December, 2020, the NYPD reported that it would begin using a special version(版本) of Spot. Their robot was painted blue. It had a special camera to allow it to “see” everything on all sides of it. They called their version “Digidog”.
The robot dog cost the NYPD about $94,000. That may seem like a lot of money, but it’s cheap for a robot.
When it reported Digidog, the NYPD said, “This dog is going to save lives, protect people, and help officers, and that’s our goal.”
They soon found out that not everyone was as excited about the robot as they were. After the robot was brought to an emergency(紧急的) call in February, a video of it was shared quickly. The video upset a lot of people.
Many people were worried that the police were using an electronic dog for spying(监视). Others felt like it was wrong for the police to spend money on machines. They should focus on people.
Many people didn’t just worry about this robot dog, but about what future police robots might look like. For example, they feared that the police might use a robot that could control its own movements, or one that carried guns.
When the dog was used again in late April, 2021, another video was shared on the Internet. Once again, many people were upset. As the public are strongly against Digidog, the NYPD decided to return him to the tech company.
( ) 26.“Digidog” is a dog-shaped robot that ________________.
A. has the same camera as Spot’s
B. can “see” things in all directions
C. can be painted according to people’s needs
D. can only be controlled by touching its head
( ) 27. As the NYPD reported, the robot would do the following things EXCEPT _________.
A. save lives B. help officers C. guard homes D. protect people
( ) 28. What might be the best title of the passage?
A. A clever robot policeman B. A robot dog will be returned
C. A popular invention—a robot dog D. An invention that changes our lifestyle

December 12th,
I’m so thankful we’re all okay. I never imagined I’d have to go through something as terrible as what happened yesterday. At first I thought we were about to have just a usual rainstorm. The sky got dark and the wind picked up. Dad came in early from the fields on his truck. Then my sister Julia said, “Look at the sky. Doesn’t it look weird?”
We went to the window and saw big black clouds. I felt afraid as the strong wind blew up. Mom told us to run to the storm cellar, but I wanted to go to my room to get some of my things first. Mom caught me and made me stay with everyone else. As we ran toward the storm cellar, I saw a long, thin cloud drop down from the sky and touch the ground. The noise grew louder, like a train rushing straight at us. My little brother Mark started to cry. I picked him up and carried him down the steps into the cellar.
Above us, we heard terrible sounds that seemed to go on forever. All I could think about was losing my computer and MP3 player. I knew Julia was worried about the clothes she had just bought, and Mark was thinking about his favorite toys.
When it finally grew quiet again, we came upstairs. The whole house was gone. We all had the exact same feeling. Instead of crying about what we had lost, we hugged each other and cried because everyone was safe. We still had what mattered most — our family.

It is a black and white panda that wears a full-body “shell” made of ice and looks fat, so we call it “Bing Dwen Dwen”. That’s why it is the mascot of 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games. | |
Do you think the red mascot looks like a lantern? The lantern’s name is “Shuey Rhon Rhon”. When the Chinese New Year comes, people always make or buy red lanterns. Red is the colour of hope and good luck, so people think their dreams will come true in the new year. Take a look at its head. There are paper cuttings of doves(鸽子). They make up a circle. “Shuey Rhon Rhon” can give players hope and help them do well in the 2022 Beijing Winter Paralympic Games. |

The Spirit of Christmas
Many would agree that when we think of Christmas, we probably think of gifts, Christmas trees and Santa Claus. But behind all these things lies the true meaning of Christmas: the importance of sharing and giving love and joy to people around us. The story in A Christmas Carol is perhaps the best example of this.
A Christmas Carol is a famous short novel written by Charles Dickens. It is about an old man named Scrooge who never laughs or smiles. He is mean and only thinks about himself. He doesn’t treat others nicely. He just cares about whether he can make more money and he hates Christmas. One Christmas Eve, Scrooge sees the ghost of Jacob Marley, his dead business partner. Marley used to be just like Scrooge, so he was punished after he died. He warns Scrooge to change his ways if he doesn’t want to end up like him. He also tells Scrooge to expect three spirits to visit him.
That night, three ghosts visit Scrooge. First, the Ghost of Christmas Past takes him back to his childhood and reminds Scrooge of his happier days as a child. Then the second spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Present, takes him to see how others are spending Christmas this year. Everyone is happy, even poor people. The last one, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, takes him to the future. Scrooge sees that he is dead, but nobody cares. He is so scared that he wakes up in his bed and finds out it is only the next morning—Christmas Day!
He decides to change his life and promises to be a better person. He happily celebrates Christmas with his relatives. He also gives gifts to people in need. He now treats everyone with kindness and warmth, spreading love and joy everywhere he goes. And that is the true spirit of Christmas!

Peter kept his eyes on the ground. He felt like there was a heavy weight on his shoulders as he walked home alone. It was the worst day of his life. His mind would not stop thinking about what happened only just an hour ago on the school soccer field. How could he have missed scoring that goal? He had let his whole team down. His stupid mistake made him angry. His team had lost the game because of him. He was really worried that his coach might kick him off the team.
As soon as he walked through the door, his father asked, “What’s wrong, son?” Peter’s feelings were written all over his face. “I lost the game,” Peter replied. Then he went into his room without another word. Ten minutes later, Peter heard his father knocking on his bedroom door. He opened the door to let him in.
“Look, Peter. I don’t know what happened. But whatever it was, don’t be too hard on yourself.” “I lost the game, Dad. I failed my team. They’ll probably never let me play again.” “Soccer is about team effort. You’re not the only reason your team lost. If you have a good team, you should support each other. Besides, winning or losing is only half the game. The other half is learning how to communicate with your teammates and learning from your mistakes.” Peter didn’t say anything, but what his father said made him think carefully.
The next day, Peter went to soccer practice with courage rather than fear in his heart. “Hey, guys,” he said to his teammates. “I’m really sorry about yesterday. We were so close to winning that game. But I think if we continue to pull together, we’re going to win the next one.” To his surprise and relief, his teammates all nodded in agreement. “Yeah,” they said, “don’t worry about it. It’s never just one person’s fault. We should think about how we can do better next time.” Peter smiled. It made him feel lucky to know that he was on a winning team.
1. Why did Peter feel angry and worried? (because)
2. What advice did Peters father offer him?
3. What did Peter do after his father advised him? (with)
4. What happened after Peter told his teammates that he was sorry?

As we know, some natural resources can’t be produced again, but there are still many people who haven’t realized the importance of saving resources. Some people waste plenty of water; Some leave home without turning off the lights while others produce a lot of waste every day. As a result, many resources have been wasted, and we are short of resources. Now, it’s time for us to take action to save resources. We should call on more people to stop wasting resources. We can also try our best to recycle the waste. In this way, we can save more natural resources.
