IQ is often considered as an important driver of success particularly in fields such as science, innovation and technology. In fact many people have endless fascination with the IQ scores of famouspeople. But the truth is that some of the greatest achievements by our species have primarily relied onqualities such as creativity, imagination, curiosity and empathy (同感).

Many of these characteristcs are rooted in what scientists call cognitive (认知的) flexibility”—askill that enables us to switch between different concepts or to adapt behavior to achieve goals in a novelor changing environment. Cognitive flexibility provides us with the ability to see that what we are doing isnot leading to success and to make the appropriate changes to achieve it.

Cognitive flexibility may have affected how people coped with the pandemic lockdowns(疫情封锁)which produced new challenges around work and schooling. Some of us found it easier than others toadapt our routines to do many activities from home. Such flexible people may also have changed theseroutines from time to time trying to find better and more varied ways of going about their day. Others, however, struggled and ultimately became more rigid in their thinking.

Flexible thinking is key to creativity. It also supports academic and work skills such as problemsolving. For example, visual artists may be of average intelligence but highly creative and have producedmasterpieces. Creativity is also important in science and innovation. We have discovered that successfulbusinessmen who have created multiple companies are more cognitively flexible than managers of a similarage and IQ.

Cognitive flexibility is also associated with high recovery from negative life events as well as higherquality of life in older individuals. It can even be beneficial in emotional and social cognition: studieshave shown that cognitive flexibility has a strong link to the ability to understand the emotions, thoughtsand intentions of others.

Neuroimaging studies have shown that cognitive flexibility is dependent on a network of frontal brainregions. There are a number of ways to objectively assess peoples cognitive flexibility including theWisconsin Card Sorting test and the CANTAB Set Shift Task. And the good news is that it seems that youcan train cognitive flexibility.

    32. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?

    A. Creativity is the only source of peoples success.

    B. A drivers achievement is not determined by IQ.

    C. The IQ of famous people is mysterious.

    D. IQ may not be the key factor in humans achievements.

    33. Which might NOT be an example of cognitive flexibility during pandemic lockdowns?

    A. Organizing online meetings. B. Taking up indoor workout.

    C. Joining in group hiking. D. Learning to bake at home.

    34. Which belongs to the consequences of cognitive flexibility?

    A. Flexible people tend to stick to their routines.

    B. People have a better understanding of others feelings.

    C. Businessmen are more likely to succeed than visual artists.

    D. Older individuals are able to avoid misfortunes in life.

    35. What would the following paragraph talk about?

    A. The ways to develop cognitive flexibility.

    B. The application of cognitive flexibility.

    C. The Wisconsin Card Sorting test.

    D. The importance of training cognitive flexibility.

    (Text 4)

M: The bus was supposed to arrive at 9:00 and its already 15 minutes late. If it doesnt come soon, Ill be late formy date.

W: Yes, I have a meeting at 10:00 and I cant afford to miss it.

    (Text 5)

M: Good morning, madam. Come in. What can I do for you?

W: Well. Im having difficulty in sleeping. I often wake up at three in the morning and I just cantget back to sleep.

    (Text 6)

M: Hey, Susan. Youre good at remembering things, arent you?

W: Yeah, I guess so. Why?

M: Im always forgetting things. Last week I went to the bank for some money, and I forgot to take it outof the machine. When I remembered and went back, the money was gone. Besides, I couldnt rememberwhere I parked my car.

    W: Thats pretty bad.

M: Can you give me some advice on ways to improve my memory?

W: Not really. Youd better just let me drive you to the bank next time.

    (Text 7)

W: My parents told me my uncles and aunts are planning a big family reunion in Paris thisfall.

M: Are you going to the reunion?

W: You bet. All my uncles and aunts will take their children along, too. So Ill meet manycousins there.

M: How nice! But why Paris?

W: Because two of my aunts are French. They met and got married to my uncles in France. Some of their relatives are still living there.

M: Have you ever been to France before?

W: No. Actually, Ive never traveled abroad. Im very excited about it. I just cant wait.

M: My parents are going to take me on a trip to Hawaii next month by way of Tokyo, butIve been there three times already.

    (Text 8)

    W: Sorry, Im late, Tom.

M: Its all right, Rita. Where have you been?

W: At the police station. Ive lost my handbag. Or perhaps someones taken it. I dontknow.

M: Oh, no. What happened? Sit down. Was there anything important in it?

W: Important! My checkbook, all the papers I need for work.

M: Oh, thats terrible. But how did you lose it?

W: Well, as you know, I was with a friend all morning and we had lunch together. After Ihad lunch, I went shopping. And when I wanted to buy something, I couldnt find mycheckbook. Then I remembered that it was in my handbag. And my handbag was in mycar.

M: So you went back to your car.

W: But I didnt find it there.

M: And you went to the police station?

W: Not immediately. Before I went to the police station, I called my friends office. Noluck.

M: You should go to the restaurant where you had lunch and look for it.

W: Oh, I should have done that.

M: Now youd better telephone the manager right away.

    (Text 9)

    M: Any messages, Miss Grey?

W: Just one, Mr. Blank. You had a telephone call from someone called Brown, David

    Brown.

M: Brown? I dont seem to know anyone called Brown. What did he want?

W: He wouldnt say. But it sounded important. I told him youd phone him as soon as yougot back.

M: Well, Id better do it then, I suppose. Er... youve got his phone number, havent you?

    W: Yes, its 633201.

    M: 622301.

    W: No, 633201.

M: Oh, Id better write it down, otherwise Ill probably forget it.

W: I have already done it, Mr. Blank. Its on your desk.
