12 year old Skyla wanted to do something nice for the health care workers who cared forher beloved great grandmother hospitalized with the flu. It was the nurses who got the sickgreat-grandmother up from the hospital bed to see Skyla and her mother outside when theywent to hold up homemade signs outside the hospital windows.
Wanting to do something special for the health care workers, Skyla created the McAllenNurse Care Kit Project, filling gallon-sized bags with treats ranging from chips to pens andnotepads. Each bag, with a handwritten card thanking them for their hard work and devotion,wasdelivered to Edinburg Regional Hospital, where her great-grandmother was treated. “Sothey have something to snack on during their lunch break if they don’t have anything withthem, and they also contain a handwritten card to show that we thank them,” Skyla said.
Skyla invited some of her fellow troop members from the McAllen Girl Scouts ServiceUnit to help. After creating 213 kits with friends and family, the girls packed an additional 200—bringing the total to 413 kits for the hospital.
“I’m just proud that she took the time because it was hours, from the packing of the kitsto organizing and writing those handmade cards,” said Skyla’s mother. “I’m really glad sheus able to have this experience because this summer wasn’t the same as it is usually, but itsounded good that we made ita little bit more influential to the community.”

Residents of several villages in Russia’s Magadan region have recently reportedblacksnow caused by the black powder produced by an outdated, coal-powered water-heating plant.In Omsukchan and neighboring Seimchan, two villages in the Siberian far east, snow doesn’talways look the way you’d expect. In fact, sometimes it’s quite the opposite. Instead of whitesnow covering everything as far as the eyes can see, locals are treated to a bad view of blacksnow that the kids sometimes play in. Photos and videos of this disturbing scenery have beendoing the rounds online every winter for years, but locals say that despite the temporary angerthey express online, nothing ever changes.
Black often represents tough luck but the black snow isn’t the result of some sinister, unexplained phenomenon. Omsukchan is home to a coal-burning hot water plant that providesheating to several settlements in the area, and as temperatures drop in the winter months,more coal has to be burned in order to keep water temperatures up. This results in increasingblack smoke in the atmosphere. The smoke coming out of the plant’s chimneys eventually fallsto the ground, covering everything, including white snow.So the black snow that people seeis simply the effect of coal pollution.
Oksana Gerasimova, the head of the Srednekansky district, tells Magadan Pravdanewspaper that the plant is indeed to blame, but adds that the situation is better than it was a few years ago. It’s true that the ash and smoke collectors at the plant don’t do a perfect job, butthe situation is only temporary and the black snow is apparently “not a reason to worry”.
Authorities’ plans to change the filters in the coal-burning plant to stop the pollution areunderway, and they want to replace the old plant with an electricity-powered one, but it requires new sources of funding.Most of the people living in Omsukchan and Seimchan haveheard that before and they are raising their hopes.

What is the mostimportant is to make sure the place you choose is bright and quiet. Choose a chair that requires you to sitstraight. Reading in a chair that’s too soft and comfortable is likely to make you sleepy! Keep your reading toolsand a dictionary close at hand.
Before you sit down, try to reduce all possible interruptions. Turn off your phone, the television. Tell yourfamily members or roommates that you will be busy for a while. If necessary, put a“Do not disturb”sign onyour door! The more interruptions you must deal with while you read, the harder it will be to keep your attention on the task at hand.
