The music is on. The figure skater glides (滑行), jumps and spins (旋转). One turn, two turns, three turns – it seems they never get dizzy (眩晕的) no matter how many times they spin. Why?
People often feel dizzy and lose balance (平衡) after spinning around. This is because when we move our head during a spin, our eyes start to move in the opposite direction. They reach their limit (极限) before our head finishes a full turn, so they turn back to a new starting point, said Scientific American. When our eyes repeat this, we get dizzy.
Figure skaters don’t have any super power. They get dizzy, too. Their secret is lots and lots of
practice, according to Science Focus magazine. As they train more, their brains get used to the feeling.
Skaters also have methods to help them feel less dizzy. One method is called “opposing eye
movement”(对视眼运动). It’s like our eyes move while our heads stay still when we watch a
moving train pass in front of us. Skaters can train themselves to have this eye movement when
they spin. Scientific American said this can offset (抵消) the dizzy feeling.
Other methods include keeping a uniform speed (匀速). We feel dizzier when our brain feels
changes in speed. Skaters can also pick one spot (点) to stare at as they stop turning. Some skaters
will design a dance move at the end of a long spin, said Science Focus. This provides a little break
while the dizziness passes.
30. When we spin our heads to the right, our eyes _____.
A. move to the right
B. move to the left
C. move faster than our heads
D. stare at the starting point
31. Which picture shows “opposing eye movement”?
32. How many methods for fighting dizziness are introduced in the story?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
33. A dance move at the end of a long spin can give skaters _____.
A. extra dizziness
B. a higher score from the judges
C. a break to pass the dizziness
D. more energy for the next big spin

In a rural(农村的) family in Fuzhou, Fujian, there live a girl, her little brother, their
grandmother and a cat named Hua Juan. In the eyes of Hua Juan, the grandma treats the boy and
the girl very differently – she saves milk for the boy and feeds him as he is a baby while not
paying much attention to the girl. One day, Hua Juan falls asleep and has a dream, and everything
changes …
This is the story told in the short film I’m Hua Juan. Within three minutes, the film explores a
heavy topic – the traditional preference for sons over daughters. The film helped 18-year-old Zhu
Manlin win the best director award at the 2021 International Teen Short Film Festival.
Zhu, a student at the Fuzhou Senior High School, said she got the idea of the film from stories
of people around her. “Gender(性别) preference is still a common thing. Three out of the five
members of our filming team have such families with older sisters and younger brothers,” said
Zhu. “Many people may take it for granted, but not for a cat. I tell the story from the perspective
(视角) of a cat to encourage the audience to take another look at reality.”
While the theme(主题) is realistic, the visuals appear artistic. In the film, the reality is in
black and white while dreams are colorful. Zhu also shot the film in a square format (正方形画幅)
to give it an unusual feeling as well as a sense of seriousness.
Zhu said her favorite director is Lee Chang-dong from South Korea, who “cares about reality
but also stays poetic”. “I wish I could make such a film one day,” she said.
34. Who is Hua Juan in the short film?
A. The younger brother.
B. The elder sister.
C. The grandmother.
D. The cat.
35. What is the main topic of the film I am Hua Juan?
A. Caring for the elderly.
B. The meaning of dreams.
C. Animal protection.
D. Gender preference.
36. What does the phrase “take it for granted” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. talk about it
B. disagree with it
C. find it unusual
D. consider it normal
37. How can we describe the film?
A. Long and exciting.
B. Realistic and artistic.
C. Happy and colorful.
D. Blue and magical.
