    一、用单词的适当形式完成短文
Directions: After reading the passages below fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Forests give us shade, quiet and one of the harder challenges in the fight against climate change. Even as we humans count on forests to soak up a good share of the carbon dioxide we produce, we1. (threaten) their ability to do so. The climate change we are hastening could one day leave us with forests that emit more carbon than2.absorb.
Thankfully, there is a way out of this trap—but it involves striking a subtle balance. Helping forests flourish as valuable “carbon sinks” long into the future3. require reducing their capacity to absorb carbon now. California is leading the way, as it does on so many climate efforts, in figuring out the details.
The state's proposed Forest Carbon Plan aims to double efforts4.(thin) out young trees and clear brush in parts of the forest. This temporarily lowers carbon-carrying capacity. But the remaining trees draw a greater share of the available moisture, so they grow and thrive, 5.(restore) the forest's capacity to pull carbon from the air. Healthy trees are also better able to fend off (抵挡) insects. The landscape is considered less easily burnable. Even in the event of a fire, fewer trees6. (consume).
The need7.such planning is increasingly urgent. Already, since 20l0, drought and insects have killed over 100 million trees in California, most of them in 2016 alone, and wildfires have burned hundreds of thousands of acres.
California plans to treat 35,000 acres of forest a year by 2020, and 60,000 by 2030—financed from the proceeds of the state's emissions-permit auctions. That's only8. small share of the total acreage that could benefit, about half a million acres in all, so it will be vital to prioritize areas at greatest risk of fire or drought.
State governments are well accustomed to managing forests, 9. traditionally they've focused on wildlife, watersheds and opportunities for recreation. Only recently have they come to see the vital part forests will have to play in storing carbon. Califomia's plan, 10. is expected to be finalized by the governor next year, should serve as a model.

Many people honor Guan Yu (or Guan Gong), a hero during the Three Kingdoms period. But recently, a statue of the ancient general has 11. criticism from authorities and the public.
In October, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development said on its website that the construction of the Guan Yu statue in Jingzhou, Hubei province, 12. local regulations.
The monumental(极大的) statue, built in a Guan Yu-themed park, covers an area of 152,000 square meters and weighs more than 5,000 tons. At about 58 meters tall, the statue surpassed the 24-meter limit on structures in local areas, according to CCTV News.
Even the cost of building the statue, about 170 million yuan, far exceeds the 13. budget. Worse, the park 14. the structure as the world's tallest bronze statue to attract tourists, but has only brought a revenue of less than 13 million yuan in the past four years, China Daily reported.
Due to recent media reports, the issue caught the public’s attention and 15. criticism for its waste of resources. Also, there are 16. over its safety risks and legality.
On Nov 17, the local authorities responded that experts have been organized to make a plan to relocate the statue. This announcement once again stirred discussion online.
Many asked to keep the statue, considering the cost and effort that had gone into the project. One internet user commented that “relocation would cost a lot of money. Why not just keep it and explore further development using 17. resources?” Still others questioned why there was no supervision from local authorities since the beginning of construction to ensure that rules were being followed.
According to Hui Ming, from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, this should be a lesson for local decision-makers. Before 18. about building statues, there should be adequate research and work. Also, public money and resources should not be wasted in this fashion.
This is not the only case of such an extravagant landmark. The Shuisi Tower project in Dushan county, Guizhou province, was also 19. by the MOHURD as a “cultural landmark" that was built indiscriminately(盲目地) and divorced from reality, and could damage the natural landscape.
    Limit size of structures
The MOHURD has issued a notice on 20.the management of large-scale urban statue construction, which says that large statues with a height of more than 10 meters or a width of more than 30 meters must be managed as important urban construction projects.
To protect historical and traditional buildings, the MOHURD announced in April that urban architectures cannot be built taller than 500 meters unless their plans are approved.

    三、完形填空
Last week, I taught a case study on the decline of Nokia to my MBA students. I asked them, “Why did Nokia fall from industry 21 to also-ran position in the space of less than five years?” Their answers were 22 :
“They lost touch with their customers.” True, but almost tautological-and interesting to note that this is the same Nokia that in the early 2000s was praised for its 23 -centric marketing and design capabilities.
“They 24 to develop the necessary technologies.” Not really true-Nokia had a prototype touch screen before the iPhone was launched, and its smartphones were 25 superior to anything Apple, Samsung, or Google had to offer during the late 1990s.
“They didn’t recognize that the basis of competition was shifting from the hardware to the ecosystem.” 26 , not really true-the “ecosystem” battle began in the early 2000s, with Nokia joining forces with Ericsson, Motorola, and Psion to create Symbian as a 27 technology that would keep Microsoft at bay.
Through this period, the people at Nokia were 28 the changes going on around them, and they were never short of leading-edge technology or clever marketers. Where they struggled was in transmitting 29 into action. The company lacked the capability to change in a decisive and committed way.
The failure of big companies to 30 to changing circumstances is one of the principal puzzles in the world of business. Occasionally, a genuinely “disruptive” technology, such as digital imaging, comes along and 31 an entire industry. But usually the sources of failure are more dull and avoidable—a failure to 32 technologies that have already been developed, an arrogant disregard(傲慢的漠视) for changing customer demands, a self-satisfied attitude towards new competitors.
In such cases, the final responsibility for 33 rests with the CEO. But if such failures are to be avoided, it is clear that the CEO cannot do it on his or her own. People across the firm must keep their eyes open to 34 in their business, and to take responsibility to push their new ideas and 35 existing ways of working. Obviously, this isn't easy to do, but if there is a better understanding of the problem then there is a chance for improvement.

    四、阅读理解
I’ve worked in the factories surrounding my hometown every summer since I graduated from high school, but making the transition between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to be uncivilized, getting to a factory by 6 o’clock each morning is torture. My friends never seem to understand why I’m so relieved to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation.
There’re few people as self-confident as a college student who had never been out in the real world. People my age always seem to overestimate the value of their time and knowledge. In fact, all the classes did not prepare me for my battles with the machine I ran in the plant, which would jam whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part backward or upside down.
The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could disappear overnight. Issues like downsizing and overseas relocation had always seemed distant to me until my co-workers told me that the unit I was working in would shut down within six months and move to Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour.
After working 12-hour shifts in a factory, the other opinions have become only too clear. When I’m back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy rewrites seems too irresponsible after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound stale now ring true.
These lessons I’m learning, however valuable, are always tinged with a sense of guilt. Many people pass their lives in the places I briefly work, spending 30 years where I spend only two months at a time. “This job pays well, but it’s hell on the body,” said one co-worker. “Study hard and keep reading,” she added.
My experiences in the factories has inspired me to make the most of my college years before I enter the real world for good.
36.What does the author think of his summer days while at college?
A.They brought him nothing but torture.
B.They were no holiday for him at all.
C.They were a relief from his hard work at school.
D.They offered him a chance to know more people.
37.What does the author say about college students?
A.They expect too much from the real world. B.They have little interest in blue-collar life.
C.They have a feeling of trust in themselves. D.They are not confident of their future.
38.In what important way has the author’s work experience changed him?
A.He learned to be more practical. B.He acquired a sense of urgency.
C.He came to respect blue-collar workers. D.He came to appreciate his college education.
39.Why does the author feel somewhat guilty?
A.He realizes there is a great divide between his life and that of blue-collar workers.
B.He looks down upon the mechanical work at the assembly line.
C.He has not done much to help his co-workers at the factory.
D.He has stayed at school just for the purpose of escaping from the real world.

Currently, it’s the beginning of the rainy season in the heart of Brunei (文莱), and I have never been so sweaty. Last night I was poking at insects larger than I’d ever seen or even, in my worst nightmares, imagined existed, but despite this, I’m still having the time of my life.
I’m on a taxonomy expedition at the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre in the Kingdom of Brunei Darussalam with a small group of entomologists (昆虫学家), biotech researchers and laypeople (门外汉) like me. We are searching for new species in the rainforest under the guidance of a research organization. Taxon Expeditions is one of a new crop of private organizations that is tapping into the pockets of people who are science-curious but not science-trained. We help to fund this research, and we get to participate in it.
I can’t emphasise how remarkable this is. I spent a lot of time as a child dozing in my Snoopy sleeping bag under the table in my mother’s lab as she worked on her Ph.D.in development genetics. Sequencing DNA in the 1980s wasn’t something that a person just did in a few hours, and it certainly wasn’t done using a device that fitted in the palm of one’s hand. And the result wasn’t then immediately cross-referenced with an offline version of an online public database of more than 5.3 million “DNA barcodes” to see if the organism being sequenced is a newly discovered species.
And the craziest thing about all of this is that the sequencer costs less than £1,000 from a company based in Oxford. I would recommend pairing up with an actual geneticist, a biotech expert and a real entomologist to make sense of the data, but the implications for the future of access to hands-on science are astonishing. Mark my words: we are less than a generation away from an army of layperson bioprospectors (生物勘探员) working the field using a little bit of scientific training and a lot of YouTube online knowledge.
But if a trip to the rainforest with an organisation like Taxon is out of the question, then you can still do research as close as your back garden. The same group that took me to the rainforest went to the Vondel-park in the centre of Amsterdam and identified a new wasp that had never been recorded by science. And yes, the sequencer — while less expensive than a high-end smart-phone — does require a little more training than a touchscreen. But this kind of science is rapidly trickling down to the rest of us, so getting any science kit or apps in the hands of your kids or grand-kids this holiday season is an investment. Because there’s noting like discovery to fuel the future.
43.What can we learn about the writer of the passage?
A.The writer is a biotech researcher.
B.The writer is interested in science despite not being an expert.
C.The writer had spent a lot of money participating in the expedition.
D.The writer is a staff member at the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Center.
44.The underlined phrase “tapping into the pickets of people” probably means “________”.
A.trying to make money from people.
    B.attempting to arouse people’s interest
C.trying to develop the potential of people
    D.attempting to boost people’s knowledge
45.Why does the writer say that the implications for the future of access to hands-on science are astonishing?
A.Because teaming up with real experts to work on a project is by no means easy.
B.Because scientific devices like sequencers are affordable for the average person.
C.Because the assistance of non-professional bio prospectors aiding in scientific research is less than a generation away.
D.Because affordable devices, basic scientific training, and online knowledge make it possible for the average person to conduct useful research.
46.We can conclude from the passage that .
A.scientific research is still restricted to some trained experts
B.devices like sequencers are easier to operate than smart-phone
C.one doesn’t need to be scientifically trained to take part in valuable research
D.doing research in one’s own garden can help promote the development of science

    六、概要写作
51.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
    The Benefits of Being Bilingual
At one time being bilingual was thought to slow down brain development, although it is now known to have many benefits. Aside from professional and social benefits, studies show that the process of learning a second language actually strengthens some areas of the brain.
To start off with, a study done at the University of British Columbia shows that babies exposed to two languages before birth don’t confuse the languages. Moreover, it showed that the effort it takes to keep the languages separate improves perception.
The benefits aren’t only for people who grow up bilingual, however. Anyone who learns a second language during their lifetime will have certain advantages. For one, Swedish scientists found that the brain grows during language learning, particularly the area where memories are created.
Not only does the brain grow, but language learners also improve in many areas. They are good at multitasking while paying detailed attention to each task. Additionally they strengthen their math skills, listening skills, ability to focus, problem-solving skills, reading and vocabulary in their native language, and their memory increases. In the area of math, a study done at the University of Washington shows that bilinguals solve new math problems half a second faster than monolinguals.
Language learning also has huge benefits for old age. Brian Gold of the University of Kentucky did a study comparing the ability of bilingual seniors and monolingual seniors to do an attention-switching task. Usually this skill fails with age. However the bilingual seniors performed better than the monolinguals, and their brains worked less hard and more efficiently.
Neuroscientists (神经系统科学家) think that having more brainpower at an older age helps protect us from Alzheimer’s. Current medication for Alzheimer’s only delays it for 6-12 months, while learning a new language delays it for 4-5 years. Again, this is not only for people who learn a second language from birth. Even if you don’t learn another language until after middle age it helps. Language learning keeps your brain active and “fit”.

通过整合关键词at one time, slow down ,brain development, now, many benefits.可归纳出段落大意:Bilingual, once considered to be a barrier to brain development, is now known to have many benefits.
第二部分(第2段,第3段,第4段,第5段,第6段)描述了双语的好处。第2段谈到了对孩子的好处。通过整合关键词:babies, exposed to two languages before birth, don’t confuse the languages, improves perception可以归纳出段落大意:Babies involved in two languages before birth don’t confuse the languages, but also improve their perception.第3段通过关键词aren’t only for, anyone, have certain advantages可以归纳段落大意:The benefits is also helpful to people learning a second language.第4段,结合首句可以得出段意:Learners not only grows the brains, but also improve in many areas. 第5段,首句为中心句,所以段意为 Language learning also has huge benefits for old age.第6段,末句为总结句,所以段意可以概括为:Language learning keeps your brain active and “fit”
    ②遣词成文。综上描述,双语的好处应该从孩子出生后的认知,对第二语言的学习,对生活,对老人的帮助四个方面来描述总结。
