一、阅读理解
Author Tim O’Brien Recommends 4 of His Favorite Books
Tim O’Brien is the author of The Things They Carried, a collection of linked stories about Vietnam that has become a classic of war fiction. His new book, Dad’s Maybe Book, collects reflections he began years ago to share with his two young sons.
Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev (1862).
This has long been one of my favorite books, and I read it again this year. It’s the story of two fathers and two sons and their disappointment in each other. A son can never quite satisfy a father, a father can never quite satisfy a son.
First Love by Ivan Turgenev (1860).
This is a love story on its surface: A young man falls in love with a slightly older woman, not knowing she is his father’s lover. At the time, many Russians found it too light. I find nothing light about it.
The Complete Stories by Flannery O’Connor (1971).
O’Connor’s beautiful stories touch a place in my heart that’s rarely touched in fiction. There’s a subtle (微妙的) but strong religious thread: she’s always asking big questions—about where we come from, where do we go, and what is the purpose of human life.
The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway (1987).
I used these stories as a way of talking to my young sons about writing. It was fascinating to hear their responses. After reading The Killers, about two guys who go to a small town to hunt down a boxer, my older son wondered why anyone would want to be a boxer in the first place—don’t they get hit in the head? It wasn’t what Hemingway intended him to think about, but the reader brings his or her own concerns to a story. The author can only control so much.
1.Which book contains the author’s reflections of some classics?
A.The Things They Carried. B.Dads Maybe Book.
C.First Love. D.Fathers and Sons.
2.Who does “I” refer to in the passage?
A.Ivan Turgenev. B.Flannery O’Connor.
C.Ernest Hemingway. D.Tim O’Brien.
3.Which touches a place in heart that fictions rarely do?
A.Fathers and Sons. B.First Love.
C.O’Connor’s stories. D.Ernest Hemingway’ stories.
4.What is the special effect of The Killers?
A.It stimulates readers’ thinking. B.Its expression is fascinating.
C.It controls readers’ thinking. D.Its expression is humorous.
Every man wants his son to be somewhat of a clone (克隆), not in features but in footsteps. As he grows you also age, and your ambitions become more unachievable. You begin to realize that your boy, in your footsteps, could probably accomplish what you hoped for. But footsteps can be muddied and they can go off in different directions.
My son Jody has hated school since day one in kindergarten. Science projects waited until the last moment. Book reports weren’t written until the final threat.
I’ve been a newspaperman all my adult life. My daughter is a university graduate working toward her master’s degree in English. But Jody? When he entered the tenth grade he became a “vo-tech” student (技校学生). They’re called “motorheads” by the rest of the student body.
When a secretary in my office first called him “motorhead”, I was shocked. “Hey, he’s a good kid,” I wanted to say. “And smart, really.”
I learned later that motorheads are, indeed, different. They usually have dirty hands and wear dirty work clothes. And they don’t often make school honor rolls (光荣榜).
But being the parent of a motorhead is itself an experience in education. We who labor in clean shirts in offices don’t have the abilities that motorheads have. I began to learn this when I had my car crashed. The cost to repair it was estimated at $800. “Hey, I can fix it,” said Jody. I doubted it, but let him go ahead, for I had nothing to lose.
My son, with other motorheads, fixed the car. They got parts (零件) from a junkyard, and ability from vo-tech classes. The cost was $25 instead of $800.
Since that first repair job, a broken air-conditioner, a non-functioning washer and a non-toasting toaster have been fixed. Neighbors and co-workers trust their car repairs to him.
These kids are happiest when doing repairs. They joke and laugh and are living in their own relaxed world. And their minds are bright despite their dirty hands and clothes.
I have learned a lot from my motorhead: publishers need printers, engineers need mechanics, and architects need builders. Most important, I have learned that fathers don’t need clones in footsteps or anywhere else.
My son may never make the school honor roll. But he made mine.
5.What used to be the author’s hope for his son?
A.To avoid becoming his clone. B.To resemble him in appearance.
C.To develop in a different direction. D.To reach the author’s unachieved goals.
6.The author let his son repair the car because he believed that ________.
A.His son had the ability to fix it B.it would save him much time
C.it wouldn’t cause him any more loss D.other motorheads would come to help
7.In the author’s eyes, motorheads are _______.
A.tidy and hardworking B.cheerful and smart
C.lazy but bright D.relaxed but rude
8.What did the author realize in the end?
A.It is unwise to expect your child to follow your path.
B.It is important for one to make the honor roll.
C.Architects play a more important role than builders.
D.Motorheads have greater ability than office workers.
Happiness increases when we experience more positive emotions throughout the day. Fredrickson, a leader in the field of psychology, identifies 10 positive emotions, including joy, interest, hope, pride, amusement, inspiration, love and so on. How often we experience these positive emotions compared to negative emotions in a day affects not only our mood, but also our physical health. She has discovered that those who have a 3∶1 ratio of positive to negative emotions on a daily basis are happier and healthier.
Sadly, most people, even those who consider themselves positive people, are far below that ratio. The good news is that you can learn to increase your ratio of being positive, which leads to greater happiness, health and success.
Research shows that by increasing positive emotions, we become more creative, perform better at tasks, and have better relationships. The most exciting finding is that we now have proof that selfgenerated positive emotions can improve our physical health.
Nevertheless, we don't want to get rid of all negative feelings. Negative emotions are proper and helpful sometimes. It's appropriate to feel sad about the loss of a loved one. Anger often pushes us into action to improve a situation or correct a mistake. However, if you find yourself waiting impatiently when the driver in front of you doesn't instantly notice the light turns green, or if you find yourself scolding your kids for laughing too loud while you are on the phone, you are having negative feelings in your daily life too often. Then you should step back and analyze those feelings, and turn them around.
9.What is the most exciting finding about increasing positive emotions?
A.It improves relationships. B.It contributes to good health.
C.It helps develop creativity. D.It leads to greater success.
10.What does the author say about negative feelings?
A.People should turn every negative feeling around.
B.Negative feelings can sometimes have positive effects.
C.Negative feelings often cause people to make mistakes.
D.People should never show negative feelings in public places.
11.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.People should learn to manage their emotions.
B.People should be patient with their negative feelings.
C.People should learn to analyze the causes of unhappiness.
D.People should identify as many positive feelings as possible.
A culture’s values can be mirrored by its humor. Humor has been evaluated by many great minds such as Thomas Hobbes, who, in “On Nature”, disliked humor, “Laughter is nothing else but sudden glory arising from sudden thought of feeling far better than others.” He thought humor to be a negative quality of human narrow-mindedness.
However, Mordechai Gordon, Ph. D of Education, insists, “Humor allows us to view the world from an angle that is amusing rather than serious.” I agree with Gordon. Learning to look at the world through humor is important.
In the United States, every four years an election occurs. Without humor as a way to express their feelings, how else would Americans keep from clawing their eyes out (伤心欲绝) and going the way of lemming (盲目跟从) ? Television shows a joke “The Daily Show” have become important parts of American culture. They are mothering the masses by metaphorically (隐喻地) airplane-ing (用鼻子吸食大麻) politics into our mouths. They make politics fun.
Of course, politics is only one type of humor. Social humor helps people through the twists and turns of the human condition. American pop culture promotes an unhealthy self-image. On the topic of self-image, Hari Kondabolu stands out. He has a joke about the popular musical group “The Pussycat Dolls”, describing their hit song “Don’t Cha” as a negative representation of women. He points out an obvious offence in American culture.
A study from Loyola University of Maryland has shown that humor is one determining factor for selecting a mating partner. Amongst other things, mates look for an outstanding funny bone in a potential partner.
Of course, humor is not always used for good purposes. Humor can be linked to vulgarity (粗俗) and racism, but, like everything else, it has potential to unite human beings by allowing us to laugh at ourselves, our failures and our connection with one another.
Though life may seem tough and depressing at times, all I have to do is look in the mirror at my increased wrinkles to know that there is a comedy out there that even Chaplin wasn’t aware of.
With that in mind, remember to laugh with humanity and sometimes at humanity.
12.Hobbes believes that humor ______.
A.was for people to view the world from another angle
B.resulted in narrow-mindedness of human beings
C.had the power to mirror personal glory and national values
D.was only a way to laugh at others to make oneself feel better
13.The fourth paragraph is developed mainly ______.
A.by comparison B.by process
C.by example D.by classification
14.What is the author’s attitude towards political humor?
A.Worried. B.Disappointed. C.Curious. D.Appreciative.
15.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.The author is determined to face life with a sense of humor.
B.The author feels helpless and sad about getting older.
C.Never be the one who laughs at other people.
D.Chaplin wasn’t aware of being laughed at.

Everyone has his own idol. There is also one in my mind. She is Helen Keller, who influences me most.
I came across a book entitled Three Days to See by Helen Keller five years ago. I learned from the book that she was stricken blind and deaf but she didn’t bow to destiny. Instead, she tried to live life to the full. With the help of a teacher called Sullivan, she overcame her disabilities and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. She even helped other people with a disability as a social activist. She devoted herself to raising funds for the American Foundation for the Blind.
