My Ph.D. adviser infrmed me I had failed my qualifying exam n my third attempt, which meant dismissal frm the prgram. Hw was it pssible that ne exam — ne hur f my life — culd define me as unfit t be a scientist?
I wasn’t sure what t expect when I started my Ph.D. prgram. I struggled with my classes during my first year, spending cuntless hurs studying in the library. Fr the next 5 mnths, I asked my cmmittee chairs fr guidance and practiced answering ral questins. I even stpped ding lab wrk t fcus n my exam preparatins. I was all in.
When the exam was ver, I left the rm feeling a mix f fear and relief. But thse feelings changed t disappintment the next day after I learned I’d failed. I speak Spanish at hme, but I have difficulty translating even the simplest scientific cncepts int Spanish. This hampered my ability t cmfrtably speak the expected “language f science.”
My adviser requested t reinstate (恢复) me t the Ph.D. prgram, and I’m nw back t wrking n my dctrate. I still have a little vice in the back f my head that I’m nt gd enugh. After Ecembes invited the Cateura rchestra t perfrm in Madrid in 2014, the grup decided t fund its wn similar ensemble (小乐团) that same year, said Gil, the directr f Music f Recycling. The ensemble put n its first cncert just fur mnths later and “the kids culd nt play mre than fur ntes,” said Gil.
