    Passage 3
At the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, China over the last few days have seen lots and lots of snow—man-made snow. Since the area gets little natural snow, this is the first time the Winter Olympics is taking place on almost 100% artificial(人造的)snow.
This year’s Winter Olympics were held in Beijing, China, and in two areas northwest of Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou. The areas get cold in the winter, but they don’t get a lot of snow. That’s because they’re not far from the Gobi Desert, and are generally very dry.
That meant some serious changes were needed to hold the Winter Olympics there. China took water from a reservoir(水库) which helps supply Beijing’s drinking water and sent it to a nearby river. To carry the water to the mountains for making snow, the country ran miles and miles of pipes(管子). China says making the snow took about 49,000 gallons(加仑) of water. Experts say it probably took a lot more water than that.
China employed an Italian company called TechnoAlpin to create the snow. TechnoAlpin created artificial snow at several earlier Winter Olympics. For the snow in this year’s Olympics, TechnoAlpin laid over 40 miles (64 kilometers) of pipes and brought in hundreds of snow-making machines. Even with all of those machines, making the snow for this year’s Games took seven weeks.
In recent years, it has become more and more common to use artificial snow at winter sports events. That’s true even in places that used to have a lot of snow naturally. Some artificial snow was used in the Winter Olympics in 2010 and 2014 because of warm weather. In the 2018 Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, about 90% of the snow was man-made. As the world warms because of climate change, problems like this are expected to become far more common. Michael Mayr, who leads TechnoAlpin in Asia, says, “You could not have winter sports now without man-made snow.”

    Passage 10
Australia has officially listed koalas across its eastern coast as endangered animals because they are fighting to survive the influence of bushfires, land-clearing(开荒), drought and disease.
Koala numbers have decreased in eastern Australia over the past 20 years, experts said, warning that the animal is now reducing toward extinction. At the same time, many koalas suffer from Chlamydia(衣原体疾病). The number of koalas in New South Wales have fallen 33~61 percent since 2001. In 2020, a report warned that if urgent action were not taken, the animal might become extinct before 2050.
Ten years earlier, the koala, a globally recognized symbol of Australia’s unique wildlife, had been listed as vulnerable(易受伤的) on the eastern coast. However, the number of koalas became less and less since 2001 because of drought, fires and other reasons. Some are killed by dogs or are run over on roads.
People welcomed the koalas’ new status(地位) but condemned(谴责) Australia’s failure to protect them. And it may be the real reason that the koala has decreased greatly.
What’s more, experts said it was hard to give exact figures on koalas affected by every factor. But it is estimated by the Threatened Species Scientific Committee that they had decreased from 185,000 in 2001 to just 92,000 this year. What’s worse, the Australian Conservation Foundation said there are now fewer than 100,000 koalas in the wild, possibly as few as 43,000.
    1. There are _________ reasons that make the koalas endangered besides diseases.

    2. What does the underlined word “extinction” mean in Chinese?
    A. 底部 B.灭绝 C.繁衍 D.种族

    4. What do people think of the new status of koalas?
    A. Frightened. B. Excited. C. Disappointed. D. Acceptable.
    5. What’s the main idea of this text?
    A. Australia protected koalas successfully.
    B. Australia has taken many measures to protect koalas.
    C. Koalas decreased because of Australian did harm to them on purpose.
    D. Koalas have become endangered animals because of all kinds of reasons.
    Passage 11

Every spring, thousands of birds die and fall on the ground when they hit Chicago’s tall buildings, which lie on a main migration path(迁徙路线) between Canada and Latin America. That’s just a part of the reason why the number of North American migratory birds is dropping.
With the global climate getting warm, the body size of many birds are becoming smaller. When their body size becomes smaller, their brains become smaller with the change, too. Bigger brain size can usually lead to better learning ability, better memory, longer life and other results. That means birds are more likely to avoid the change caused by global warming. In this case, birds will look for habitats with cooler temperatures so that they can keep their body size and brain size. However, global warming is making birds have less and less choices. If it goes on like this, some bird kinds may die out in near future.
In order to make the species live longer, scientists suggest that it’s high time for us to do something to slow down the global warming. On the other hand, some tall buildings with glass walls usually mislead birds’ flying path. We may need laws to let the tall buildings on main migration path stop using glass walls. After all, the shrunk(缩小后的)brain size make birds have less sense of direction as well as less flexibility(灵活性) so they may get more chances to hit tall buildings.
    1. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
    A. The death of birds usually happens in summer.
    B. The tall buildings are in Los Angeles.
    C. Tall buildings are the main reason of the death of the birds.
    D. the number of North American migratory birds is dropping.
    2. What can bigger brain size lead to?
①better learning ability ②better memory ③longer life
    A. ①② B. ②③ C. ①③ D. ①②③
    3. What does the underlined word habitat mean in Chinese?
    A. 食物 B. 栖息地 C. 水源 D. 路线
    4. What does “it goes on like this” refer to ?
    A. If the environmental pollution continues.
    B. If the global temperature continue to rise.
    C. If people building more tall buildings with glass walls.
    D. If more enemies of birds like snakes live here.
5.What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?
    A. To offer some other knowledge about birds.
    B. To show an example to make us fully understand the writer’s ideas.
    C. To give us some suggestions to improve the situation.
    D. To use what experts said to support the writer’s ideas.

    Passage 12(推荐安徽)
During the World Elephant Day on August 12th, 2021, Chinese and foreign experts(专家) met in one online forum(论坛)to discuss ways to protect elephants better based on the migration(迁徙) of 15 wild elephants in Southwest China’s Yunnan Province. This shows how Chinese people care about the protection of these giant friends.
The 15 wild Asian elephants among which one male turned back in July finally returned to their habitat(栖息地) after touring for 17 months in Yunnan Province. The case was taken by the experts as a successful example on how to protect and guide the migration of wild elephants.
Zhou jinfeng, Secretary of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation, mentioned an idea which focused on helping wild animals survive by reducing the harm to nature and wildlife in our daily lives.
Zhang Chenglin, Deputy Direction of the Beijing Zoo, who introduced some measures taken by Chinese zoos to take good care of elephants, said that there were around 150 elephants living in zoos around China.
“Humans and animals share nature. To protect elephants is to protect our planet. Hope we can work with other countries to protect wild animals.” a woman wrote on Sina Weibo on the World Elephant Day.
    1. Where did Chinese and foreign experts meet to discuss ways to protect elephants better?(不超过5个词)

    2. How long did these 15 wild Asian elephants tour in Yunnan Province?(不超过5个词)

    3. How many elephants live in zoos in China?(不超过5个词)

    Passage 13 (推荐山西)
Koala is a symbol of Australia’s special wildlife. Koalas are found in eastern Australia. Their habitats(栖息地) require the trees on which they feed and in which they live. Koalas eat the leaves of certain trees. A koala can eat as much as 1.3kg of leaves daily. They can live about 15 years in the wild and somewhat longer in zoos. Sometimes they are called koala bears, but the koala is not a bear. The koala is actually a type of animals with a backwards-facing pocket.
Australia officially listed koalas across its eastern coast as “endangered” recently. Experts said koala populations had cut down in much of eastern Australia over the past twenty years, warning that they were now heading towards extinction(灭绝). Koalas have gone to endangered in ten years. That is a surprisingly fast speed. The numbers of koalas had got down from 185,000 in 2001 to just 92,000 in 2021. East coast koalas could be extinct by 2050 if no action was taken. Australia's koalas had been living on a dangerous situation even before the big bushfires of 2019-2020 because of land-clearing, drought(干旱), disease and so on.
We should never have allowed things to get to the point where we are at risk of losing a national symbol. The bushfires is a wake-up call to Australia and the government to take faster action to protect the habitat from development and land-clearing and the influence of climate change.
The government is making the promise of $36 million to protect and recover(恢复) koala habitats. The importance of today’s decision can be seen but it won’t stop koalas from heading towards extinction unless there are stronger laws and rules to protect their forest homes.
As the symbol of Australia’s special wildlife, Koalas live on the trees in eastern Australia. 1.___________of certain trees are their food. They can live up to 15 years or longer. 2. ___________sometimes people call them koala bears, the koala is actually not a bear, but a type of animals with a backwards-facing pocket. Recently they were listed as “endangered” animals. Experts said that the number of koalas became smaller and they even 3. ___________ that koalas may die out. So we have to take action to stop pulling down their homes. Australia and the government should move much 4. ___________ to protect koalas. Today’s decision is
    5. ___________, but we still have to set up if there are stronger laws and rules to stop koalas from dying out.

    Passage 14
Over the last two decades (十年), the Earth has seen an increase in vegetation (植被) and China and India are leading the increase in greening on land. The result comes mostly from tree planting programs in China and intensive agriculture(集约农业) in both countries.
Researchers from Boston University found that global green area has increased by 5% since the early 2000s, an area equal to the size of Amazon rainforest. Among the increased area, China and India contribute to about 33%, especially China, with 25% itself. China’s great contribution came mostly from its programs to protect and expand forests, which is about 42%. These programs were developed in an effort to reduce the effect of desertification(沙漠化), air pollution and climate change.
Another 32% of the greening change in China, and 82% in India, resulted from intensive agriculture of food crops. The land area used to grow crops in China and India has not changed much since the early 2000s. Yet both countries have greatly increased the total green area and food production in order to feed large populations. The lead author Chi Chen of Boston University said,
“That is a surprising finding, since it is generally believed that land degradation(退化) in populous countries is usually more serious.”
Rama Nemani, a research scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center, saw a positive message in the new findings. “Once people realize there is a problem, they tend to solve it,” However, the researchers also pointed out that the gain did not necessarily fill up the loss of natural vegetation in tropical regions(热带地区) like Brazil and Indonesia.

    Passage 17(推荐山西)
The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics was more than a sporting event. It was also a show for science and technology.
    ___________
    “Seeing” the wind
The National Speed Skating is said to have “the fastest ice”, as 12 new Olympic records and one world record were set there. The secret is a new ice-making technology. Liquid carbon dioxide (液态二氧化碳) is put under the ice to keep temperature changes on the ice surface within half a degree. That keeps the ice flat. Flat ice is easier to skate on.
In events like freestyle skiing and ski jumping, the direction and speed of the wind can have a big influence on a player’s performance. A Chinese research team developed a system to measure (测量) wind. The system uses AI technology. It allows players and coaches to “see” wind with real-time data on their ipads, and decide when and where to jump.
    (Table I )
A team from Fudan University has developed a training system according to the performance of winter sports players taking part in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
Zhang Lihua, the team leader and a professor of engineering and technology at the Shanghai university, said the system can know players’ movements, speed and other performance during training. He came up with the idea of building the system in 2019.
Normally, coaches watch players carefully to give reflection on how they are performing, but the system can tell the real-time performance of the players through special cameras, which can record every move they make, and have a conclusion of their performance.
If a player wants to challenge himself, the system can help him to achieve their dream. For example, Yuzuru Hanyu has long dreamed of doing a quadruple axel. It’s the most difficult jump in figure skating. Axel Paulsen, from Norway, first did the 4A in 1882.Although Yuzuru Hanyu failed, he got a lot of help from the system.

    (Table Ⅱ )
The system could possibly be used not only for serving national sports competitions, but also among the general public. The team has been researching the system's functions for new areas.

    Passage 8
    【参考范文】
    How to Study effectively
Under the double reduction policy, students don't have so much homework. But this is not meant to affect students' grades. So students should study effectively.
First, think about what you are study actively. No matter what you are studying, you should develop the habit of active thinking. When your mind is racing, you get more done in less time. Second, focus on what you are doing. You should develop an ability to focus on your studies. For example, when you study English, you don't have to think about Chinese. Finally, be careful and confident about what you learn. If you are not careful enough, you will make a lot of stupid mistakes. So in the process of learning, we should be serious. And we also need to be confident. It really feels good to believe in yourself.
By three points above, we hope that we can study effectively.

    Passage 9

In order to improve the abilities of students, one of the ways is the study trip. The study trip is a kind of school education which is popular with students. It can not only make students relaxed but also open up their mind.
Last weekend, our class made a study trip to the beach. At first, we were glad to enjoy the sunshine and swim in the water. However, we found much rubbish left on the beach. Our teacher came up with a good idea that the one who picked the most rubbish would win a prize. All of us tried our best to do it. There is no doubt that the dirty beach came back to its beauty, and the teacher praised us. We were really happy because we learned that we should protect the environment.
In my opinion, the study trip is very helpful to us. And we will be able to have more chances to take part in these kinds of activities.
