A picture of an abacus

How can you do calculations (计算) quickly? These days, you can easily use a calculator.
But how about people in ancient times? In the very beginning, the cleverest among them thought of using stones and seashells. Then, around the 2nd century B. C. , they invented the abacus. Some researchers consider the invention to be the world's oldest "calculator". In China, people used abacuses to do calculations for thousands of years.
The abacus is usually made of wood.It has many beads (珠子). Each rod (竿)stands for a different digit (数位). The rightmost is ones, the second is tens, the third is hundreds, and so on. Each bead in the central area has a value.
In the past, the use of the abacus was taught in all schools. It was considered to be an important skill that everybody needed to pick up. Wherever there was a need for calculations, an abacus would come into sight.
Today, abacuses are no longer widely used. Perhaps you have never seen one. However, we can still feel the important roles they once played. Abacuses have become a symbol. It is said that about 40% of the world’s population use social media, and most influencers help social media users decide what to buy and what trends (潮流) to follow.
Influencers are people who can influence the decisions of their followers because of their knowledge and expertise(专长) in a particular area, e. g. fashion, travel or technology.
Influencers often have a large following of people who pay close attention to their views. Influencers are now seen by many companies as a direct way to customers’ hearts.Brands are now asking influencers to market their products. It is no surprise that more and more people want to become influencers too. If you are one of them, then here are some tips on how to do it.
Choose your field. What is the area that you know most about? What do you feel most excited talking about? Find the specific area that you're most interested in and develop it.
Post regularly. Many influencers post daily on their social media accounts (账户). The more you post, the more likely people will follow you. Also, ensure that your posts possibly follow a theme.
Tell an interesting story. Whether it is a photo or a comment that you are posting, use it to tell a story that will catch the attention of your followers and help them connect with you.
Make sure people can easily find your posts. Put your posts on social media by using catchy titles and make sure that they can be easily found. There is no point in writing the most exciting stories or posting the most beautiful photos if no one is going to see them.
Most importantly, if you want to become a social media influencer, you need to have patience. Keep posting and your following will gradually increase. Good luck!

The ability of reading and writing doesn't come naturally to people, it takes a lot of effort, and most of us have learned how. Eighty - six percent of the world's population is literate (受过教育的), and this number has been increasing for centuries. Literacy makes it possible to make a world filled with books, websites, text messages, road signs, and more.
But the world of information is changing. Why send a long letter or text when you can share photos or videos instead? Why learn from a book when you can practice a skill in virtual reality(虚拟现实)? Why read magazines when you can listen to podcasts(播客)?
Could people take part in today’s world without reading or writing at all? Technology seems to make it possible. Nowadays most of our smart devices(设备) are able to talk and take spoken orders, like reporting the weather, playing a song or setting a timer. The devices sometimes still make silly mistakes, but it's getting better and better. It's possible to imagine a future world where we can easily communicate with our devices.
But reading and writing are still powerful tools. For one, most people read faster than they speak. A podcaster or audiobook teller speaks at around 150 to 160 words per minute, while a strong reader can read through a text at 300 to 400 words per minute. That's twice as fast!Research has also found that people remember more information and stay more interested when they are reading as compared to listening.
Learning to read also creates new connections in the brain. With the invention of reading, humans rearranged the very organization of our brain, which improves the way to think and changes the intellectual evolution (进化) of our humans.
What do you think? Do you hope people keep on reading and writing or will technology make literacy obsolete?

七、阅读与回答问题(本题共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
Is Space Tourism a Good Idea?
"The most profound (深远的) experience I can imagine" is how actor William Shatner described the four minutes ho spent in space. Ho was one of four passengers on board billionaire Jeff Bezos' rocket, called New Shepard.
It was the second time that the rocket had successfully taken tourists into space. Bezos believes that in the future, millions of people will live and work in space. This will reduce the amount of pollution being caused on Earth.
However, Prince William says people should fix problems on Earth before going to space. "We need to put the world's greatest brains together to try to repair this planet, instead of trying to find the next place to go and live. " he says. What do you think? Is space tourism a good idea?
YES R -- "It is the future and it will save the Earth. "
The developing technology will allow people to live and work in space in the future. People could move polluting businesses away from Earth and into space, which will protect the planet.
The projects are complicated (复杂的) and require lots of people working on them. This
creates lots of new jobs for scientists and engineers.
Let's not forget that going into space is also a lot of fun. Besides, humankind likes to
explore and to find out what it is capable of achieving.
NOQ -- "It is a fantasy and waste of money. "
Billions of pounds could go towards feeding hungry people, housing those without homes and providing medical treatment for people in need. The time and money spent on space tourism could also be used to develop technologies to protect the environment and the planet from climate change.
What's more, space travel does more harm than good. This is because rockets create huge amounts of pollution as they burn tons of fuel in order to fly into the sky.
Lastly, space tourism is only for the rich. Few people can afford to buy a ticket to space.
Because of this, it will only end up being the wealthiest who get to go.

Nowadays we students have much more spare time than ever before, but how can we make our spare time more meaningful?
Generally, it falls into four parts. Firstly, to show our love to them, it's good for us to help our parents do some housework. In this way, not only can we share their stress, but also can develop the ability of independence.
Secondly, we will have enough time for book. We can get knowledge, broaden our minds and strengthen our character by reading.
Besides, it's also a good idea to join various clubs and choose any hobby you like. And, why not spend more time taking exercise? It really does good to us.
In addition, get close to nature. Everything, including fresh air, nice trees and flowers, can make us relaxed and less stressed. Moreover, do remember that we should protect the environment around us. It's our duty to make our home better.
What's more, we can take an active part in some social activities as volunteers. Also, it's a good choice to have trips.
All in all, let's make full use of our spare time and make it more meaningful.
