    (C)
“Des my smile lk big in this?” Future fitting-rm mirrrs in clthing stres culd subtly adjust yur reflectin t make yu lk ─ and hence feel ─ happier, encuraging yu t like what yu see.
That’s the idea behind the Emtin Evking System develped by Shige Yshida and clleagues at the University f Tky in Japan. The system can manipulate, r in ther wrd, cntrl yur emtins and persnal preferences by presenting yu with an image f yur wn smiling r frwning face.
The principle that physilgical changes can drive emtinal nes ─ that laughter cmes befre happiness, rather than the ther way arund ─ is a well-established idea.
The researchers wanted t see if this idea culd be used t build a cmputer system that manipulates hw yu feel. The system wrks by presenting the user with a web-camera image f his r her face ─ as if they were lking in a mirrr. The image is then subtly altered with sftware, turning the crners f the muth up r dwn and changing the area arund the eyes, s that the persn appears t smile r frwn (皱眉).
Withut telling them the aim f the study, the team recruited (招募) 21 vlunteers and asked them t sit in frnt f the screen while perfrming an unrelated task. When the task was cmplete the participants rated hw they felt. When the faces n screen appeared t smile, peple reprted that they felt happier. On the ther hand, when the image was given a sad expressin, they reprted feeling less happy.
Yshida and his clleagues tested whether manipulating the vlunteers’ emtinal state wuld influence their preferences. Each persn was given a scarf t wear and again presented with the altered webcam image. The vlunteers that saw themselves smiling while wearing the scarf were mre likely t reprt that they liked it, and thse that saw themselves nt smiling were less likely.
The system culd be used t manipulate cnsumers’ impressins f prducts, say the researchers. Fr example, mirrrs in clthing-stre fitting rms culd be replaced with screens shwing altered reflectins. They als suggest peple may be mre likely t find clthes attractive if they see themselves lking happy while trying them n.
“It’s certainly an interesting area,” says Chris Creed at the University f Birmingham, UK. But he ntes that using such technlgy in a shp wuld be harder than in the lab, because peple will use a wide range f expressins. “Attempting t make slight differences t these and ensuring that the reflected image lks believable wuld be much mre challenging,” he says.
Of curse, there are als imprtant mral questins surrunding such subtly manipulative technlgy. “Yu culd argue that if it makes peple happy what harm is it ding?” says Creed. “But I can imagine that many peple may feel manipulated, uncmfrtable and cheated if they fund ut.”
63.What’s the main purpse f the Emtin Evking System?
    A. T see whether ne’s feeling can be uncnsciusly affected.
    B. T see whether ne’s facial expressins can be altered.
    C. T see whether laughter cmes befre happiness.
    D. T replace the mirrrs in future clthing-stre fitting rms.
64.What can we learn abut the web-camera image in the study?
    A. It recrded the vlunteers’ perfrmance in the task.
    B. It gave the vlunteers a false image.
    C. It attempted t make the vlunteers feel happier.
    D. It beautified the vlunteers’ appearance in the mirrr.
65.What des Creed mentin as a limitatin f the technlgy?
    A. It nly changes the areas arund the muth and the eyes.
    B. It nly wrks in clthing stres.
    C. It nly makes subtle changes t peple’s expressins.
    D. It nly deals with a limited number f facial expressins.
66.What des Creed’s cmment n the mral issues with this technlgy imply?
    A. Nthing is mre imprtant than happiness.
    B. Technlgy is unable t manipulate peple.
    C. Peple shuld make their decisins independently.
    D. Peple shuld neglect the harm f the technlgy.

New Players Help Build Emtinal Intelligence in Children

In recent years, parents have shwn an interest in STEM-related tys—nes that help teach Science, Technlgy, Engineering and Mathematics. ____67____ These tys reprtedly nt nly help raise intelligence in children, but als their emtinal qutient, r EQ.
Cmpanies shwed ff their prducts last week at New Yrk's Jacb Javitz Cnventin Center. PlelQ is a set f plastic ty blcks. It uses augmented reality (增强现实) technlgy t teach wrds, numbers and ther things. Edisn Duran directs the cmpany that makes PlelQ. She shwed peple at the ty fair hw virtual images appear n the blcks when they are held in frnt f a tablet camera. Intelligence includes intrapersnal (内心的) skills—prcessing infrmatin within ne's mind—and interpersnal skills, r dealing with ther peple. ____68____.
On the ther side f the cnventin center, Karen Hu demnstrated an educatinal rbt called Wb. The rbt cmes prgrammed with educatinal games and activities. Children use its tuchscreen face t get them started. ____69____ Hu described hw the rbt can help a child wh has autism spectrum disrder (自闭症障碍). “He [ the child] can cmmunicate with Wb and he can fllw sme f the instructin Wb is giving because he think(s) f this as a cmpanin instead f a parent r smene else telling him t certain things.”

    IV. Summary Writing (10分)

As parents, we need t help children build twards future success by develping persistence. Persistence is what drives actins such as finishing a task, pushing thrugh frustratin, putting in time and effrt, r finding creative appraches t a challenging prblem. The ability t keep trying early in life is linked t all srts f favrable utcmes years later.
There are three main strategies fr encuraging persistence in yur child.
The first is mdeling what persistence lks like. Gd mdeling is mre effective when planned and carried ut with a specific gal (such as develping hnesty, r, yes, persistence) in mind. Parents wh nticeably struggle with smething that are slightly difficult at hme, but cntinue t pursue the activity anyway, and repeat that pattern ver time, may naturally fster persistence in a child. It helps mre if they smetimes cmment: "Hmm, that did nt wrk. Let me try anther way.”
When yu see yur child ding this themselves and devting special effrt t a task, praise them right then and there. Praise even the smallest signs f effrt. Quickly, clearly ding this will increase the child's effrt, which can, in turn, extend t ther activities and situatins they encunter in the future. In general, if yu spt the child trying hard r harder than she usually dcs and wrking thrugh tasks, praise them fr what they are ding.
And if yu d nt see this happening, and yur child is nt ding smething a bit difficult, yu d nt need t wait. Yu can prvide pprtunities fr persistence. That is, try t cmbine mdeling and praise: D anything that invlves sme time and effrt tgether. Then, set small and eventually larger gals. Depending n hw it is ging, have the child d mre and mre f the task while yu keep him r her cmpany. Hwever, yur chsen activity shuld be fun r, at least, a time free f reprimands r harsh crrectins.
