第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题,每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项 (A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将选项涂黑
A
Four best secret beaches in the Caribbean
Spotts Beach, Grand Cayman
Surrounded by cliffs, this picturesque beach on Grand Cayman is excellent for seeing sea turtles, and its location – the south coast of the island – makes it perfect for watching the sunrise and set. Best of all, there’s limited parking and only a few homes nearby, so you won’t be climbing over sunbathers, nor will you be competing for space at the picnic tables or grills.
Little Bay, Anguilla
When you have to climb down a rope along a cliff to get there, you know it’s a secret beach. But that’s precisely the adventure it takes to enjoy the quiet nature of Little Bay. While accessing it may be a bit of an upsetting experience, once you get to the white sandy beaches with no crowds, you’ll be glad you did. We guess we should mention you can take a hired boat here, too.
La Sagesse Beach, Grenada
Clear water and soft sand are two of the many reasons people seek out this peaceful, palm tree-dotted slice of the Grenada coastline, which has but a single hotel. You can rent beach chairs and boat, and be sure to explore the tropical gardens of the La Sagesse Nature Center, located less than a mile down the road. Book a private villa right near the beach or choose a nearby hotel like 473 Grenada Boutique Resort.
Gold Rock Beach, Grand Bahama
Referred to as a “welcome mat” during low tide because you can sit on the sand bar, Gold Rock Beach is part of the Lucayan National Park, which you have to walk through to get to the sandy shores. You’ll only see a couple of other beachgoers at this hidden diamond in the Bahamas, and you can explore Lucayan’s underground caves nearby – that is, if you can tear yourself away from the sunshine.
21.Which beach best suits people who enjoy sea turtles?
A.Little Bay, Anguilla. B.La Sagesse Beach, Grenada.
C.Spotts Beach, Grand Cayman. D.Gold Rock Beach, Grand Bahama.
22.How can a tourist reach Little Bay, Anguilla?
A.By driving a car. B.By simply walking.
C.By taking a hired plane. D.By climbing down a rope.
23.What is special about Gold Rock Beach, Grand Bahama?
A.Tourists can visit tropical gardens.
B.Tourists can explore underground caves.
C.Tourists can appreciate the sunrise and set.
D.Tourists can spot clear water and soft sand.

Growing up in a poor African American neighborhood, Carl Allamby and his five brothers and sisters were raised by their stay-at-home mother and a father who sold home goods door-to-door. He faced low expectations and numerous barriers to pursuing his dream. His school didn’t offer the advanced science classes that might have led him on a premed (医学预科班) path, so he set aside thoughts of becoming a doctor.
He had started it at the age of 19, working alone out of a rented bay in a friend’s garage. Over the years, it had grown into two shops with 11 employees, but Allamby had become anxious, longing for something more. So at the age of 34, he decided to go for his bachelor’s degree in business management. After taking classes part-time over the next five years, Allamby was told he had to take biology to get his degree. Biology class awakened a childhood dream within himself.
With the support of his wife and family, he soon decided to skip business school in favor of the science classes he’d need for a second career as a health-care worker. Becoming a doctor when he would be approaching the age of 50 was clearly crazy. He would instead become a nurse or a physician assistant like his wife, he thought. But Allamby’s chemistry professor encouraged him to pursue his dream to be a doctor.
And so in 2015, Allamby started at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In 2019, at the age of 47, Carl Allamby became Carl Allamby, MD. Now Allamby is a second-year resident.
“How many people can do something so brand-new and have so much stimulation and responsibility at such a late stage in their life?” he says, “I am told that I shouldn’t be a doctor. Whether it’s because of my age, my race, my upbringing, or my past career, these are all good reasons why I shouldn’t be here. And yet, here I am.”
24.What made Carl fail to become a doctor when he was young?
A.No social barriers.
B.Parents’ being jobless.
C.High expectations from his parents.
D.No advanced science classes in his school.
25.What awakened Carl’s childhood dream?
A.Chemistry class. B.Business class.
C.Biology class. D.His professor’s encouragement.
26.Why did Carl skip business school?
A.To attend science classes. B.To manage his shops.
C.To take part-time classes. D.To support his family.
27.Which of the following can best describe Carl?
A.Caring. B.Determined C.Honest. D.Good-tempered.
C
For centuries, fishers in Narrangansett have fished in the waters of the northwestern Atlantic for herrings (鲱鱼). But as climate change warms the world’s seas, the herrings are disappearing at the southern end of their range and turning up more often at its northern edges. A study shows that concentrations of marine (海洋的) species populations have been shifting away from the equator (赤道) and toward the poles during the course of the past century. These movements could wreak havoc on food webs and endanger the livelihoods (生计) of fishers.
The tropical (热带的) water at the equator is well-known for having the richest diversity of marine life on Earth. The number of marine species naturally decreases gradually as you head towards the poles. Ecologists have assumed this global pattern has remained stable over recent centuries until now. Our recent study found the ocean around the equator has already become too hot for many species to survive, and that global warming is responsible. And as species flee to cooler water towards the poles, it’s likely to have deep impacts on marine ecosystems.
Losing species in tropical ecosystems means ecological adaptation to environmental changes is reduced, potentially damage ecosystem persistence. In subtropical ecosystems, species richness is increasing. This means there’ll be species invaders, and new competitive relationships. This could result in ecosystem collapse in which species go extinct and ecosystem services (such as food supplies) are permanently changed.
One way is to reduce our emissions aggressively. Other opportunities could also help safeguard biodiversity and hopefully minimize the worst impacts of it shifting away from the equator. Designing climate-smart reserves could further protect biodiversity from future changes. For example, reserves for marine life could be placed where the climate will be stable over the foreseeable future. We should take action without delay.
28.What does the underlined phrase “wreak havoc on” probably mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Clarify B.Classify. C.Destroy. D.Purify.
29.What can be learnt from the second paragraph?
A.Some species move to water in lower temperature.
B.More marine species exist at the poles than the equator.
C.The subtropical water has the most diverse marine species.
D.The global pattern of the ecosystem remains unchanged now.
30.What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.The increase of species in subtropical ecosystem.
B.The decline of ecological changes in the ocean.
C.The temporary changes in ecosystem services.
D.The effects of species’ immigration on marine ecosystem.
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing this article?
A.To inform readers of the reduction of marine species.
B.To appeal to readers to protect marine biodiversity.
C.To predict the future of the marine ecosystem.
D.To explain the reasons for global warming.

Artificial intelligence (AI) might be able to spot the next virus to jump from animals to humans, Scottish researchers report.
Identifying diseases before they become a threat to humans is challenging, because only a few of the nearly 2 million animal viruses can infect humans. By developing machine learning models, researchers can analyze genetic patterns of viruses that might infect people. “Our findings show that the zoonotic (动物传染人的) potential of viruses can be inferred to a surprisingly large extent from their genome sequence (基因组序列).” the researchers at the University of Glasgow reported. “By highlighting viruses with the greatest potential to become zoonotic, genome-based ranking allows further ecological and virological characterization to be targeted more effectively.”
The researchers said the models are only a first step in identifying animal viruses with the potential to infect humans, however. Viruses flagged by the models will need laboratory test confirmation before researchers pursue funding for further study. Although these models may predict if viruses might infect humans, that’s only one part of the broader risk. Zoonotic risk is also influenced by how destructive a virus is in humans, as well as its ability to transmit between people, and ecological conditions at the time of human exposure.
The findings were published online in the journal PLoS Biology. Co-author Simon Babayan said these findings add important information to that collected from genetic sequencing of viruses using AI techniques. “The more viruses are characterized, the more effective our machine learning models will become at identifying the rare viruses that ought to be closely monitored and prioritized for vaccine development.” Babayan added.
32.What is the significance of genome-based ranking?
A.To identify viruses which have threatened humans.
B.To discover human viruses that can infect animals.
C.To highlight viruses with the slightest chances to become zoonotic.
D.To target ecological and virological characterization more effectively.
33.What can be inferred from the third paragraph?
A.The fund for further study has been put in place.
B.There is still a long way to go for AI models to function ideally.
C.Viruses flagged by the models have been confirmed by researchers.
D.Viruses’ transmission ability is the most influential factor for zoonotic risk.
34.What is Simon Bybayan’s attitude towards the findings?
A.Positive. B.Ambiguous. C.Indifferent. D.Doubtful.
35.What is the best title for this text?
A.AI Models Spot Various Viruses in Nature.
B.AI Models Monitor Vaccine Development.
C.AI Models Predict Potential Zoonotic Viruses.
D.AI Models Cure Potential Zoonotic Diseases.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Five years ago, my husband and I bought a former farm. It’s a short ride from our Vancouver home but a world away. As we restore the land, I feel my well-being returning, but I think the farm is also working its magic on our son’s growing resilience (适应能力). Since Dev was 20, he has lived with mental illness. We have been on this journey with him from crisis to recovery.
36 We found the farm.
It has taken a couple of years to clear the land, seed the lawn (草坪) and build garden beds. But we did it even as other parts of our life had come undone. The farm was holding our family together. We come over on weekends and holidays and have been planting. 37
Before he went to treatment, we planted a “guild” in the old apple farm. 38 We dug around the weaker trees and placed in garlic, wildflowers and bone meal. It keeps the moisture (水分) and nutrients in, and the garden seems to thrive (茁壮成长) as a result.
39 The land needed clearing, and Doug, our workman, worked steadily and helped whenever I asked. Asking for help is a principle in the recovery community, a lesson my son is learning. It truly does take a village to restore a farm and rebuild a life.
The desire to recover this land has grown in me. 40 He’s found his own kind of guild that supports him. Owning a farm was never our plan but it came when our family needed a meaningful project. When my hands are in the dirt, I remember that intervention (干预) is necessary and so is allowing nature to take its course. Digging is an act of faith, hope and anticipation of what will appear next.
A.We helped ourselves by helping others.
B.We also learned how to depend on others.
C.My son had great difficulty making a recovery.
D.I have seen this drive toward restoration in my son as well.
E.Just when it couldn’t get any worse, an unexpected light occurred.
F.During this time, Dev is concentrating on his own restoration process.
G.Its aim is to support the health of trees by grouping other surrounding components.

41 lately.
My act of courage isn’t much—I just stopped 42 my hair. I had brown hair that started going gray when I was 30. So, I started dyeing (染色) it. It was 43 , messy and time-consuming. And my hair 44 fast, so I needed to go back to the hair salon every five weeks.
Many people seem to enjoy holding onto their 45 for as long as possible. But our hair starts to turn gray, and suddenly we start spending $500 or more a year to 46 something. I just wish more of us would feel that it was OK to be ourselves because going gray has done more for me than 47 me time and money.
I like my 48 hair, just as it is. Maybe it’s not beautiful, but 49 me that I’m not a kid anymore—and this isn’t a bad thing. So there’s nothing 50 about growing older. When I see my hair in the 51 , it’s a reminder that my time is not infinite (无限的), and I should spend it doing what 52 .
I see my gray hair as a 53 act of rebellion (反抗) against the idea that people lose value as they age, instead of gaining it. I see gray hair as my “ 54 ” —and I’m letting it fly, 55 .

第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容 (1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
At the delivery ceremony in Beijing last Saturday morning, the sample 56 (bring) back by China’s Chang’e 5 was handed over to the president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
As it returned successfully, Chang’e 5 57 (become) the first lunar sample-return spacecraft since 1976. The sample, 58 includes 1,700 grams of lunar rocks and soil, is larger than previous ones. The great increase in its weight can be owed to Chang’e 5’s lunar orbit unmanned docking (会合) program, in which the two parts of Chang’e 5 can 59 (automatic) combine into a whole in orbit.
It is also important to note that the greatest 60 (amaze) of the journey is Chang’e 5’s lunar landing site — referred to 61 the Ocean of Storms — on the near side of the moon, where no probes (探测器) have paid 62 visit before. It’s geologically younger than the sampling 63 (area) of the US and the former Soviet missions, so the new sample will help fill in an important piece of the puzzle of the Moon’s history.
The delivery marked the start of research into the sample, the administration said in a statement, 64 (add) that it will not merely publish guidelines on the sample’s distribution and use, 65 will also encourage scientists from around the world to participate.

Everyone in the seaside town knows that Fliss has a special bond with her dog Molly. They work together, live together, and play together. The Labrador (拉布拉多猎犬) is actually at Fliss’s side all the time. If a person spent this much time with a friend, they would probably have fallen out by now, but the bond between Molly and her owner just gets stronger over time.
Fliss grew up in the city. In 2017, she moved to the seaside where she opened a bath and skincare shop. Upon arrival, she couldn’t believe how much litter was left “senselessly” on the beach. In fact, she was shocked by the “unavoidable” amount of litter she found while taking Molly for walks. Being a person who cares a lot about her surroundings, Fliss decided that she had to do something about it before the tide carried the litter into the sea, threatening marine life.
One day, while collecting litter on the beach, Fliss saw Molly running towards her with an empty water bottle in her mouth. As Molly drew near, she dropped the bottle and set out to find other waste. This gave Fliss an idea: what if she could train Molly to find all those plastic bottles and bags, and make good use of them?
The training started and Fliss was surprised at how fast Molly learned. Before long, the clever girl would venture (冒险) to the seaside on her own and come home with her “prize”. She had soon filled Fliss’s house with pieces of rubbish from the local beach. At one point, Fliss’s garage was 60% filled with beach litter waiting to be distributed to local artists for use in their artwork.
When Fliss heard paws on the door the other day, she went to greet her good girl as usual. To her surprise, she saw Molly carrying a small plastic purse in her mouth. Fliss opened the purse and gasped (喘气). Inside was a passport, several credit cards, and a bunch of keys.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右:
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Fliss immediately took the purse to the local police station with Molly.
When the journalist came, they two were on the beach.
