Wildfires have recently ruined regions across the world, and their severity is increasing. Hoping to reduce harm, researchers led by Yapei Wang, a chemist at Renmin University of China, say they have developed an inexpensive device to detect such fires earlier and with less effort.

Current detection methods rely heavily on human watchfulness, which can delay an effective response. Most wildfires are reported by the general public, and other warnings come from routine foot patrols (巡逻队) and watchtower observers. Passing planes and satellites also occasionally spot something, but “the fire first appears on the ground,” Wang says. “When you see the fire from the sky, it is too late.”

The team says its new device can be placed near tree trunks’ bases and send a wireless signal to a nearby receiver if there is an unusual temperature increase. The key is molten salts (熔盐) liquids: a sudden temperature change causes electrons (电子) to travel within the liquids, creating electrical energy that causes electrodes to send the signal. The team printed the substances onto ordinary paper to create a sensor.

Jessica McCarty, a geographer at Miami University, who was not involved in the study, says places where wildland and city meet could potentially benefit from such a device. She says, “When a fire breaks out, the homeowner will know before the fire agency may have detected it.”

But improving integration among the different agencies involved in firefighting is even more vital to address, says Graham Kent, a seismologist at the University of Nevada, who was also not part of the study. “The whole way that you respond to a fire until it’s put out is like a ballet,” he says. “You’d have to choreograph (编舞) it just so,” with resources distributed at precisely the right time and place from detection to confirmation to dispatch (派遣) to extinguishing. “Fire detection is just step one; if you blow steps two through 98, all that technology... just doesn’t matter.”

Wang says his team’s next steps are to extend the device’s signal range beyond the current 100 meters, which can limit practical use, and to develop a protective wall for it. The device’s effectiveness, McCarty notes, will also need to be tested in the field.

21What can we learn about the new device?

AIt can spot fire from the sky.

BIt can send timely warning of fire.

CIt uses molten salts to test the signal.

DIt receives signals from tree trunks’ bases.

22According to Graham Kent, what is the key to firefighting?

    AThe time for detection.

    BThe provided new technology.

    CPrecisely distributed resources.

    DCooperation of different departments.

23What would be the best title for the passage?

AFighting Fire with Paper BFire Is under Control

CFighting Fire in the Forest DFirefighting Is a Matter of Urgency

    B

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report stating that the world is quickly running out of time to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius. To get there, the world would have to cut current emissions by 45 percent by 2030.That sounds absurdly unlikely.

But before we give in to hopelessnesswe should remember that the technology to deal with climate change is going along at high speed. The largest source of U. S. carbon emissions is transportationand a Green New Deal for motor vehicles would be quite straightforward. The reason is simplewith some government subsidies (补贴), electric cars and buses are now cost-competitive with fossil-fuel vehicles. Electric buses have made the greatest speed into the market, because they are a logical choice for electrification. By the end of 2018, electric vehicles were replacing about 280,000 barrels of oil demand per day — about 84 percent of which was mainly consumed by buses.

The electric car market is also reaching maturity, with appealing designs, longer range, and a quickly-expanding rapid charging network in many countries. It’s worth emphasizing that most of the infrastructure (基础设施) necessary to recharge electric vehicles already exists. People often tend to think that we need to replace every gas station, but actually all homes and businesses already have an electrical connection which can be easily improved for fast charging. All that is needed to go fully electric is enough battery capacity and fast charging stations to deal with long trips.

Now America would have to repair its electricity production, freight rail, shipping, and so on to fully decarbonizes (脱碳) the transportation sector, which will be considerably more difficult than simply rooting out fossil fuel vehicles from the market.

But greening America’s vehicle would be straightforward, relatively cheap, and a huge step forward on climate. The politics of climate change are so fearful that being hopeless can seem logical, but the first step to achieving a tough goal is the confident belief that it can be done. And this particular step wouldn’t even be that tough.

24How’s the goal of keeping global warming below 1.5 Celsius according to Paragraph 1?

    AReasonable. BSafe.

    CRealistic. DImpossible.

25Compared with fossil-fuel vehicles, electric vehicles now ______.

    Aare cost-competitive with government subsidies

Brun at a greater speed on the road

    Cdeal with longer trips

    Dlook more appealing

26What should we do to promote electric cars now?

AReplace as many as gas stations.

    BBuild more infrastructures for recharging.

    CMake businesses have electrical connections.

DSolve the problem of long trips.

27According to the passage, what is the author’s attitude to electric vehicles?

    ANegative. BSupportive.

    CUncertain. DIndifferent.

    C

Miss Baugh taught seventh-grade social studies. She taught us to take school seriously. She is the kind of teacher who lets everyone feel scared. When my friends learned that I was in her class, they showed pity on me.

One day I took my trick props (道具) to school. Of all the people I could play tricks on, I chose Miss Baugh. Before she went into the classroom. I approached her desk, opened one of the pages of her book and placed the blob (黑糊糊的一团), which just looked like spilled ink, on it.

When Miss Baugh saw the bolb, she let out a little cry and looked for something to wipe it up. The trick succeeded and was beyond my expectations. But then after careful examination, she discovered that it was just a piece of black puddle (胶泥). She looked up and swept the classroom with a deadly gaze. Then came the unavoidable question. "Who did this?" After a few faster beats in my throat, I couldn't help telling the truth. Besides, I wanted my puddle back.

Miss Baugh fixed me with a stare that struck terror into my heart as well as into the hearts of my classmates. But then, most unexpectedly, the returned the puddle to me and said with a smile, “Well, it certainly fooled me.”

A few seconds later, I found a sweet lady appeared right where Miss Baugh stood. That may be the most valuable lesson I learned in seventh-grade social studies—tolerance.

28How did the author’s friends feel when learning the author was in Miss Baugh’s class?

    ASympathetic. BJoyful CCurious DEnvious

29Which of the following best describes Miss Baugh in most students’ eyes?

AWarm-hearted but conservative BGenerous but serious

CStrict and frightening DHumorous and kind

30What did the author do to Miss Baugh?

ADestroy her book using spilled ink BPlay tricks on her by some trick props

CPour out her only ink on the ground DTear some pages out of her book

31Why does the author say “a sweet lady appeared right where Miss Baugh stood”?

ATo show another teacher came in after Miss Baugh left.

BTo describe his successful deed in fooling Miss Baugh.

CTo declare the most valuable lesson he had learned

DTo express the change of his attitude towards Miss Baugh.

    D

More than 450 kinds of plants eat insects. These plants use their special leaves as traps. When insects land on the leaves, they are eaten.

One of these insect-eating plants is the Venus flytrap(捕蝇草).It grows only in North Carolina and South Carolina. The Venus flytrap has special juices on its leaves. Insects land on its leaves to taste the juices. When the insects land, their bodies touch tiny “trigger hairs“ on the leaves. The insects struggle, making a vain effort to free themselves. Then the leaves close up suddenly, taking the insects prisoner.

The sundew(茅膏菜)is another insect-eating plant. It has red vines that look and move like arms and can close around things. These vines are covered with sticky drops. When an insect lands on one of these drops, it gets stuck in it. Then the sundew's “arms” hold the insect close.

The leaves of a butterwort(捕虫堇属植物)plant also are covered in a sticky substance. An insect attracted to the sticky material gets stuck on the leaf. Then the leaf of the butterwort rolls up, trapping the insect inside.

The pitcher plant(瓶子草类)is another insect eater. However, this plant gets its prey in a different way. It cannot move its leaves the way the other insect-eating plants do. The leaves of the pitcher plant, covered with tiny spikes(钉状物),make a sweet-smelling juice, which insects approach the leaves to taste. When they touch the leaves, they get caught by the spikes. The insects cannot escape, and they drown in a pool of juice before becoming a meal for the pitcher plant.

Insect-eating plants are an important part of nature. They do not need to get their food from the soil as other plants do. Because of this, they can grow in poor soil. Some of them even live on trees or underwater. In many cases, they survive after a disaster when other plants do not. They can live through floods and freezing weather and often are the first plants to grow again after a fire. Insect eating plants are among nature's most interesting forms of plant life.

32How does the pitcher plant trap insects?

ABy closing around their legs. BBy holding them with spikes.

CBy keeping them from eating. DBy hurting them with vines.

33What happens when an insect lands on the leaf of the butterwort plant?

AIt drowns in a pool of juice. BIt gets caught by tiny spikes.

CIt gets stuck in a sticky material. DIt gets caught in leaves that close up.

34The author of this passage would most likely agree that        .

Ainsect-eating plants are interesting to observe

Binsect-eating plants are the most dangerous form of life

Cafter a disaster, an effort should be made to grow more insect-eating plants

Da butterwort plant kills insects more efficiently than other insect-eating plants

35Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?

AHow insect-eating plants get their food

BHow insect-eating plants grow in poor soil

CWhy insect-eating plants survive other plants

DWhy insect-eating plants can live through a disaster
