The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( IPCC ) released its sixth major report on the health of the planet on Monday, demonstrating “ if Pacific Ocean temperatures continue to rise, bleaching will kill the remaining corals that make up Australia’s Great Barrier Reef ” .
Bleaching is the result of higher-than-normal ocean temperatures. Warmer water causes corals to release the sea-plants that feed them and make them colorful. They turn white and sicken, often dying very quickly.
The Great Barrier Reef, which is over 2,300 kilometers long is the largest living structure on Earth. It is home to thousands of kinds of fish and other animals. Giant clams, whales, dolphins and birds are among the others that depend on the reef to live.
Humanity also profits from the reef. Popular with visitors, who bring a lot of money to the area, the reef was the center of Tony Fontes’ 40 years career. The professional diver taught the sport and led dive rips to the reef. He compared the destruction from a bleaching event to that from a forest fire. “ You just realize you’ve just swum across a reef that a couple weeks ago was full of life and vibrant and now a bushfire has gone through it and the coral is dead, ” he said, adding, “ and the rest of the marine life will just have to move on or die off. ”
IPCC panelist Mark Howden, director of the climate school at Australian National University said conditions that scientists predicted for the future “ are appearing pretty much now. ” However, he mentioned the report offered ideas that can reduce pressure on the reef and help Australia reduce its negative impact on the environment. “ Australians should be concerned about all the problems discussed in the report, ” he said, “ but, the IPCC also wrote about solutions to prevent worst-case circumstances in the future. ”
    24. What makes the Great Barrier Reef suffer from bleaching?
    A. Sick reef. B. Emergence of sea-plants.
    C. Warmer water. D. More corals.
    25. What can we learn about the Great Barrier Reef from the passage?
    A. Many ocean creatures rely on the reef to live.
    B. It is the largest living structure in the universe.
    C. A forest fire damaged the reef a few weeks ago.
    D. It’s popular with visitors because it brings them money.
    26. Why did Tony Fontes mention bushfire in paragraph 4?
    A. To show his strong dislike of the bleaching.
    B. To describe the gradual process of the bleaching.
    C. To express the destructive effect of the bleaching.
    D. To voice the similarity between bushfire and bleaching.
    27. What will probably be talked about in the following paragraph?
    A. The vital importance of the reef. B. The ways to solve the problems.
    C. The problems discussed in the report. D. The prediction of the future condition.

What really happens during death? This question has greatly interested humankind for centuries.
Now, for the first time, scientists have recorded a dying brain, and they have made a shocking discovery: our life may truly flash before our eyes when we die.
A new study saw scientists from across the globe delve into the final moments of an 87-year-old man’s life. As published in the Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience journal, the patient died of a heart attack, and his doctors at Vancouver General Hospital in British Columbia recorded his brain in the process.
Researchers specifically studied the 30-second intervals before and after the patient’s heart stopped. What they discovered was that his life might have literally flashed before his eyes, as his brain produced neural oscillations (神经振荡). Commonly known as brain waves, neural oscillations essentially define the electrical activity of our brains. The oscillations occur at different frequencies and have generally been categorized into different states of consciousness.
In this case, the patient’s heart attack showed sudden changes in the patient’s alpha and gamma waves. This interaction has long been known to correlate with memory recall, dreaming, meditation, the processing of information, and conscious perception — in other words, flashbacks.
It’s important to note that this study is the first of its kind, as the live brain activity of a dying human being has never been measured like this before. On the other hand, these oscillations have been previously monitored in rats, which suggests the brain might launch the same biological response to death in multiple species. The study does provide certain considerations, however, such as the patient’s brain being damaged by bleeding and swelling while this activity was recorded.
Ultimately, the findings have forced us to redefine when life truly begins and ends — and not to grieve too deeply, though. Something we may learn from this research is: although our loved ones have their eyes closed and are ready to leave us to rest, their brains may be replaying some of the nicest moments they experienced in their lives.
    32. What does our brain do when we die according to the study?
    A. Our brain produces the brain waves. B. Our brain launches a kind of flashbacks.
    C. Our brain recalls the memory of our life. D. Our brain is related to neural oscillations.
    33. What does the underlined phrase “ delve into ” in paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. Explore. B. Record. C. Monitor. D. Observe.
    34. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about concerning the study?
    A. A suggestion for future studies. B. A major limitation of the study.
    C. An explanation of the research value. D. A possible reason for the study findings.
    35. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the study?
    A. Skeptical. B. Conservative. C. Optimistic. D. Objective.

Did you buy an ingredient you never used? 39 . Did you forget about leftovers or produce that’s gone bad? Stop Waste Organization recommends designating part of the fridge to food that’s quick to spoil. Label that section with an “ Eat This First ” sign.
    Store foods to last
40 . Google “ how to store produce, ” and you’ll learn that some foods should be refrigerated ( kiwis, cucumbers ), while others shouldn’t ( bananas, avocados ). And some fruits, like apples, release a gas that ripens other produce faster.
    A. Try to learn from the waste
    B. Start with a fridge cleanout
    C. Purchase less and save more money
    D. Reducing food waste also helps the planet
    E. More planning before shopping could help

    【参考范文】
    Dear Kevin,
Hearing that you are interested in the Labour Week held in our school last week, I feel extremely delighted to introduce relevant information about it.
Aimed at arousing students’ awareness of labor, various activities were organized in the Labour Week. With great passion, all the students in our school got involved in various tasks, ranging from planting trees, arranging books in the library to sorting garbage in an eco-friendly way. With our joint efforts, the camps soon took on a new look, becoming cleaner and more fascinating.
Tired as we were, we were all satisfied to see a cleaner environment. In my opinion, not only did I obtain a brand-new insight into the meaning of labor, but I would cherish the fruits of others’ labor.
    Best wishes.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

W: Great. I like to garden. I need a place for my tools.
M: That’s good. Let’s go outside and look at the backyard.
    Text 3
W: We’re having fish and potatoes for dinner. Is that OK?
    M: Just the potatoes, please.
W: That’s not enough. I’ll cook you some sausages and eggs to go with them.
M: I’ll have sausages but you know I’m not interested in eggs.
    Text 4
W: Hey Danny. Where are you going?
M: Into town. I’ve finally saved up enough money for that new computer game.
W: It’s cheaper online you know.
M: Yeah, I know. It’s just like ordering by phone. But you’ve got to wait ages for it to arrive in the post. I want to play it today.
    Text 5
M: Can I have my plane ticket now?
W: Well, I called the airline this morning and confirmed your flight. Your ticket is being sent here. You’ll have it today.
M: Good, one less thing to worry about.
    Text 6
W: John, I can’t believe it. How are you?
M: Wow! Linda? I haven’t seen you for ages. What have you been up to?
W: I’m at Faber College now.
    M: What’s your major — literature?
W: No, it’s… uh… actually history. How about you?
M: Be busy with my new job selling computers. I’ve been traveling around the country to do my business this past year. I just love it.
    Text 7
M: Aren’t you going to Las Vegas next week for the annual conference? I thought you went every year.
W: Well, yes. But this time I’m not going to be able to attend. My mum is in hospital. I’m afraid I can’t leave her right now.
M: How will we get along without you? You’ve been in charge of planning the whole thing for years.
W: Well, I’d done all that I could do from here. There really shouldn’t be any problems because we do pretty much the same thing every year. If there are any problems, I’m sure you could handle them by yourself.
M: OK, I’ll try my best.
    Text 8
W: Hi, Dan. Are you looking forward to the school swimming competition tonight?
M: Well I am, but I’m a bit nervous, I haven’t been in the team for ages because I hurt my leg while swimming,
W: Oh, yeah. Well, you’ve done lots of practice recently. I’m sure you’re as fit as you were before.
M: I don’t think so. Everyone seemed to be faster than me at the last practice.
W: Come on, Dan. So, what time do we have to get to school?
    M: Six, isn’t it?
W: Oh, my bus doesn’t arrive until 6:15.
M: My dad could give you a lift. You live on the block of flats behind the post office, don’t you?
W: Yeah, that’s right. But I can walk around to your house. That’ll save your dad having to drive to my flat.
M: OK. Can you be there by 5:30?
    W: Fine.
    Text 9
M: Have you seen Market Street this week? I missed last night’s program. Did anything exciting happen?
W: It was about Cara, Sally’s sister and they share a flat. Well, Sally went on holiday but she lent her key to their cousin Tony. He doesn’t have his own flat and he always wants to leave his parents’ house because he isn’t happy living with them.
    M: Who’s Tony?
    W: He’s that good-looking one.
    M: Oh, yeah. Carry on.
W: The problem was that Sally forgot to tell Cara about the key. And she didn’t know that Tony and Cara had had a big argument two weeks before. So when Tony arrived at the flat, Cara refused to let him in.
M: So what did Tony do?
W: When Cara was at work, Tory invited some friends of Cara’s to the flat. They cooked a meal and they were all waiting for Cana. When she came in and had some nice food, she really enjoyed herself.
    M: And what about Tony?
W: Oh, Cara let him stay, She decided he wasn’t so bad after all.
    Text 10
W: Well, I’m going to talk about a trip I made across Australia. The transport I used was a motorbike. It wasn’t a new bike, it was — what’s the word — second-hand, and I bought it because I wanted to see Australia. I didn’t want to use public transport because I wanted to be independent. I had a month’s holiday before I started my course and I made the trip with a friend, Liu Mei, a Chinese girl, because I was frightened of traveling alone. I met her at a language school where we studied English together. We traveled along the south coast and saw some of the desert. Of course we went to the Sydney Opera House. The good thing about the journey was that we met a lot of other people who were traveling. We went to places which are difficult to reach on public transport, and the trip was quite cheap. Also, the motorbike had a quite powerful engine, so it was fast and exciting. The bad things were the rain and the heat because they made us tired. I have great memories of the trip because I met really friendly people and I saw a lot of interesting places. I still have friends who I made during that trip. In all, I think it was the best journey I’ve ever made.
