I was at a neighbourhood pool party on a Friday afternoon. I live in Texas so it’s warm—even in October. My friend and I went outside to look for a pair of swimming glasses and saw someone at the bottom of the pool. We thought it was one of our friends playing, but we quickly realized that it was a little boy who didn’t know how to swim. I knew something was wrong right away.We looked around, but the adults were talking far away in the backyard and there was no time to spare. I jumped into the pool and came close to the little boy. I swam as hard as I could and pulled the little boy onto a step in the pool. As soon as I got him out of the water, my friend and I started shouting for help. When the adults heard us, they ran over. The little boy wasn’t breathing, which was really terrible. One neighbour did CPR (心肺复苏) and someone else called 911. Soon the doctors came and took the little boy to the hospital.Luckily, the little boy is doing great now. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to get him out of the water quickly enough, but I did. I’ve been taking swimming lessons since I was three years old, and I’m thankful that I’m a strong swimmer. My parents are so proud of me and people tell me I’m a hero, but what else could I have done? He needed help, and I knew what to do.1.What were the adults doing when the writer was saving the little boy?A.Shouting for help. B.Talking to each other.C.Preparing for a party. D.He just did what he was asked to.BIf English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which deals with information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles(肌肉). The study also found the effects are greater, the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals(双语)” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density(密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference. “Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language.” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible,” he said, “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.4.The main subject of this passage is ________.A.the method of learning a second language B.men’s ability to learn a second languageC.how language leaning helps brainpower D.the relationship between language and math5.What does underlined “It” in the second paragraph refer to?A.Exercise builds muscles. B.Language learning needs exercise.C.The area of the brain deals with information. D.Learning other languages changes grey matter.6.We may learn from the scientific findings that ________.A.the earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density isB.there is no difference between a later second language learner and one knowing no second languageC.the experience of learning a second language has an unknown effect on people’s brainD.the ability to learn a second language is changing all the time7.In the last two paragraphs, the author tries to tell us that ________.A.learning a second language is the same as studying maths B.early learning of a second language helps in studying other subjectsC.Italian is the best choice for you as a second language D.you’d better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language 三、任务型阅读(1篇)Self-respect is a very important part of a great life. Self-respect is a feeling of being happy about one’s characters, abilities and beliefs. Developing self-respect means developing self-confidence to deal with whatever life throws at us. The following are some ways we can improve our self-respect. There is great stress from parents, work and society to become a certain person and to achieve certain goals. A real self-respect is very important and you should believe in your own values and remember what is important to you. Everyone needs to follow his or her own path. Nobody likes criticism (批评). To keep a sense of self-respect, we need to learn how to deal with criticism. Don’t get sad by the things someone else says or does. Maybe it is completely untrue, so pay no attention to it. If there is some truth, we can use it to develop our characters. Jealousy (嫉妒) of other people’s success will cause the loss of our happiness and self-respect. Jealousy is simply envy of other people’s success. The truth is that there will always be some people more successful than us. The method for lasting self-respect is to be happy with others’ success. If you have no respect for others, how can you have self-respect? It isn’t right to feel better by putting others down. If we look for good qualities in other people, it is easier to remember the good qualities in ourselves. Forgive others and yourself. Don’t live in the past, but move on from the past mistakes and difficult situations. If your mind is full of problems in the past, you will always feel sad. Self-respect comes when we get tolerant. Sometimes we work with the best of motives (动机) only to be sorry for the result. It is the nature of life that things will not happen as we hoped, but it is a mistake to connect our sense of self-respect with the achievements.
