Rising Seas Will Erase (消除) More Cities by 2050, New Research Shows
Rising seas could affect three times more people by 2050 than previously thought, according to new research, threatening to all but erase some of the world's great coastal cities.
The authors of a paper published on Tuesday developed a more accurate way of calculating land elevation (海拔) based on satellite readings, and found that the previous numbers were far too optimistic. The new research shows that some 150 million people are now living on the land that will be below the high-tide line by mid-century. In Thailand, more than 10 percent of citizens now live on the land that is likely to be covered with water by 2050, compared with just 1 percent according to the earlier technique. The political and commercial capital, Bangkok, is particularly dangerous.
In other places, the migration caused by rising seas could cause or worsen regional conflicts. Basra, the second largest city in Iraq, could be mostly underwater by 2050. If that happens, the effects could be felt well beyond Iraq's borders, according to John Castellaw, a retired Marine Corps general.
"Further loss of land owing to rising waters there threatens to drive further social and political instability in the region, which could lead to armed conflicts again and increase the likelihood of terrorism," said Castellaw, who is now on the advisory board of the Center for Climate and Security, a research and advocacy group in Washington. "So, this is far more than an environmental problem," he said. "It's a humanitarian, security and possibly military problem too."
24. How many people will be threatened by 2050 according to the research?
A. About 15 million. B. About 150 million.
C. About 50 million. D. About 450 million.
25. What can we learn from the text?
A. The migration caused rising seas.
B. Rising seas could erase all the world's great coastal cities.
C. Basra could be entirely underwater by 2050.
D. Further loss of land owing to rising waters could cause armed conflicts.
26. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To advise people to move house. B. To warn the danger of conflicts.
C. To tell new research. D. To appeal for environmental protection.
27. Where is this text most likely from?
A. A science magazine. B. Science fiction
C. A geography textbook. D. A medical journal

Social media is taking over our lives: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and now, TikTok. These social media platforms have transformed from a way to stay connected to an industry where even kids can make money off their posts. While this may seem like another opportunistic innovation, it’s really full of hidden false realities.
The median income (中位收入) recorded in the United States of America was about $63,000 in 2018. TikTokers can make anywhere from $50,000 to $150,000 for a TikTok brand partnership, and TikTokers with over a million followers can make up to $30,000 a month — $360,000 a year. They are making more than the average person trying to feed their family and keep a roof over their heads, simply by posting a 15-second video.
This is mad in more ways than one. Not only is it an overpaid “job”, it promotes undeserved admiration from viewers and a false sense of reality. Many of these famous TikTokers are still teens, and the effects of fame at such an early stage in life might cause issues later in life, such as mental illness. Teens between the ages of 13 and 17 make up 27% of TikTok viewers, who can be easily influenced by what they are watching. They can put a false sense of self-value into who they look up to and what they represent: money, fame, being considered conventionally attractive.
While TikTok has become a great tool for marketing, it’s important to understand how this content affects young viewers. If we’re constantly consuming content that shows us all we need to do to be successful is be conventionally attractive and post a 15-second video featuring a new dance, it will challenge our knowledge of what really makes someone successful and will in turn affect our individual work ethics (伦理). What about the people who miss birthdays and family holidays due to their jobs and aren’t getting paid nearly as much as these TikTokers?
Richard Colyer, president and creator of Metaphor, Inc., had his own view on this issue.
“It sounds great that kids can make money for doing the latest dance moves in a 15-second video, but we should feed the minds of kids and not just their bank accounts. TikTok can be great if used properly. Money alone is not good, technology alone is not good and connectedness can be bad if it’s only online.”
Again, as a fellow consumer of TikTok, I do enjoy the app when I have some time to kill and need a good laugh. I’m not against someone making a living on entertainment, but what does getting famous of a 15-second video teach young people?
28. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Social networking. B. Staying connected to the Internet.
C. A job offered by TikTok. D. Making money on social media.
29. Which is the possible influence of TikTok on its young users?
A. They tend to live an adult life too soon.
B. They are likely to develop false values.
C. They may abandon other social media.
D. They are forced to pay for certain services.
30. What can we infer from Richard Colyer’s comments?
A. It is better to involve education on investment in TikTok videos.
B. Young TikTokers should be banned from making money.
C. TikTok can be a positive influence if teens employ it wisely.
D. Contents of videos need checking before their release online.
31. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. Say No to TikTok. B. A Job vs An Entertainment
C. TikTok — A Mine of Money D. Join Young TikTokers
D
The man who invented the World Wide Web a few decades ago is calling for major changes to make it better for humans. In an open letter published on Tuesday, Berners-Lee said that the web was used by half the world's population.
Berners-Lee said the web had clearly created great opportunities for humans to progress and had made life easier for millions of people. Actually, it also has offered opportunities to groups traditionally not heard a new voice in society. However, he added that the web had also provided new ways for cheats to commit crimes (犯罪).
“Against the background of news stories about how the web is misused, it's understandable that many people feel afraid and unsure if the web is really a force for good,” he wrote.
Berners-Lee created a group called the World Wide Web Foundation. He is looking for help from governments, companies and people to become more involved in shaping the web to do more good for humans. His actual plan is called the “Contract (合同) for the Web”.
Under this contract, governments are called on to take steps to make sure all people can connect to the Internet and that personal privacy is respected. Businesses are asked to keep the Internet prices low so more people can use the web. In addition, companies should respect privacy and develop technologies that aim to put people first.
The plan also calls on people to create materials for the web and work with others to make sure that is rich, quality information for everyone. Besides, people should seek to “build strong communities that respect personal speech and human equality.” “The path to make the Internet better is the responsibility of everyone who uses it,” Bermers-Lee added, “Making big changes will not be easy, but will be very well worth it in the end.”
32. What does Berners-Lee think of the World Wide Web?
A. It is his greatest regret. B. It needs improving.
C. It stops the progress of humans. D. It does more harm than good.
33. What's wrong with the web according to Berners-Lee?
A. It is misused for bad purposes. B. It blocks out a new voice in society.
C. It is misunderstood by all people.
D. It is expensive for half the world’s population.
34. What are governments called on to do under the “Contract for the Web”?
A. Put technology first. B. Popularize the Internet.
C. Create materials for the web. D. Make the Internet free of charge.
35. What should people do with the Internet in Berners-Lee's opinion?
A. Be responsible for it. B. Completely rely on it.
C. Absolutely reject it. D. Be unconcerned about it.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

How to Reduce Gift Wrap Waste
Wrapping paper may have “paper” in its name, but that doesn’t automatically mean it can be recycled. 36 Try these suggestions for cutting down the amount of wrapping paper you throw away.
Reuse what you have. 37 It’s estimated that the U.S. produces 4.6 million pounds of wrapping paper annually, and 2.3 million pounds of that stays in people’s homes, awaiting reuse.
Use different materials. 38 Select basic brown thick paper that can be made up with a bow, ribbons, leaves, pinecones or markers. Repurpose newspapers, old posters and children’s school artworks as wrapping paper. There are plenty of other eco-friendly alternatives to wrapping paper that are just delightful and celebratory.
39 Use baskets, fabric, gift boxes or bags, tea towels, and more to contain and display your presents. Learn the Japanese art of wrapping, using beautiful knots(绳结) to fasten colorful, reusable fabrics in attractive ways. This way, you’ll have no wrapping paper waste to deal with.
Ask for better paper. Shops store what customers want, and recyclability should be a top priority, so let that be known when you’re out shopping. As explained by Simon Ellin, CEO of the Recycling Association, a trade body that represents about 90 waste management companies and paper merchants in the United Kingdom, “It’s a campaign we’ve been on all year — do you really need to design a non-paper wrapping paper? Make paper with recycling in mind!” 40
A. Shop with that in mind, too.
B. Try zero waste.
C. Wrapping paper can be used many times if care is taken to unwrap it without tearing.
D. In fact, many types of wrapping paper cannot due to their materials.
E. When wrapping paper is extremely thin, it has few good quality fibers for recycling.
F. You don’t have to choose shining paper to decorate a present.
G..Having a mix of recyclable and non-recyclable papers is a real problem for companies.

A friend of mine whose name was John Smith had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly( 经常地)remind him about his meetings, his classes, even his meals! Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbors, “If John didn’t have his head tied on, he would forget that too!” Since Smith was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him. It wasn’t that he was not clever, as some critical people tended to say, but just very, very absent-minded.
One hot summer day, Pro.Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.
The professor’s wife was surprised to see him again so soon.
“Oh, my dear, I forgot the name of the town.”
“What? You forgot the name? Maybe one day you will forgot my name! Now I’ll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don’t forget where you put it.”
Satisfied that she had solved the problem she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.

“What is the matter now?” asked his wife. “ I just can’t remember why I come back and where I am supposed to be going on such a hot summer day.” replied the professor. However , the real reason was that he forgot where he had left his children. Sensing something wrong, Mrs. Smith didn’t believe his words, because whenever he told a lie, he would blink his eyes usually quickly. “ Tell me the truth,” ordered his wife. “ As you told me, I didn’t forget where I put the name of that town, but I forget the station where I left our children!” Whispered the professor, his voice trembling. “ What a bad memory!” shouted the wife.
“Hearing the cry, out rushed their neighbors, trying to find out what had happened. A fight between the couple was about to start when the professor’s cellphone began to ring. His friend phoned to complain. The professor apologized, got into his car and drove away, leaving behind a bunch of people outside the house. Being afraid that he would make matters worse again, Mrs. Smith decided to follow him, who then called a taxi. By the time she caught up with her husband, the children were already back home safe and sound.
