It has always been assumed that traffic nise is a prblem unique t animals. But a new study by Ghtbi-Ravandi, a btanist at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, has revealed that plants suffer t.
Scientists have previusly suspected that plants may be able t sense sund waves as they are struck by them. A number f experiments have cnfirmed this in recent years-plants cntinuusly affected by ultrasund(超声波)in the lab have shwn a range f adverse respnses including the expressin f stress-related genes, abnrmal grwth and reduced spruting(发芽)f seeds.
Yet blasting(轰击) plants with ultrasund is nt the same as grwing them in the presence f actual traffic nise. T this end, Dr Ghtbi-Ravandi decided t set up an experiment t study precisely this questin.
Wrking with a team f clleagues, Dr Ghtbi-Ravandi grew tw species in his lab. The plants were grwn frm seed and allwed t mature fr tw mnths in the same space befre they were divided int tw grups. One grup was expsed t 73 decibels (分贝) f traffic nise fr 16 hurs a day. The ther grup was left t grw in silence. After 15 days had passed, samples were taken frm the yungest fully expanded leaves n every plant in the experiment and studied.
Nne f the plants expsed t the traffic nise did well. Analysis f their leaves revealed that all f them were suffering. The chemical cmpunds indicating stress in plants were fund at much higher levels in the samples expsed t the traffic nise. The team als fund that a range f hrmnes nrmally assciated with healthy grwth and develpment in plants were present at significantly reduced levels in the plants expsed t the nise.
His findings make it clear that, thugh plants lack ears, the impact generated by the nise f traffic still bthers them enugh t trigger strng stress respnses. The next questin is whether all nise pllutin affects all species in the same way.

In ur fiercely cmpetitive sciety, achievement has becme the tp pririty fr many. Accrding t a natinal survey f 10, 000 students, almst 80 percent f yuth identified individual achievement r happiness as mst imprtant t them, while nly 20 percent selected caring fr thers.
Our yuth ften strive t be successful even if it cmes at a cst t their mental health, which may help explain increasing rates f anxiety and depressin amng the yuth.
Actually, yuth attitudes abut achievement start with adults. Yung peple fllw in the ftsteps f adults. They can see hw we treat success and prductivity as symbls f hnr. We reward the yuth fr being straight-A students. We encurage them t bst their resumes with endless extracurricular activities. We may tell ur children that we value kindness and empathy(共情)but d nt always prmte these values with the same enthusiasm and effrts.
Our current bsessin with achievement is likely fueling anxiety while damaging the fabric fur sciety. If we want t heal individually and cllectively then we need t examine sme relatinships. This prcess starts by recgnizing that success is nt equal t sustained happiness. It makes mre sense t achieve with the aim f making a psitive cntributin t the life f thers. If yu judge success nly by individual measures such as mney, pwer, r fame, yu will prbably be disappinted. Furthermre, let's break the myth that kindness is a barrier t achievement. There is a false statement that kindness is weakness. Hwever, the ppsite is true. Evidence suggests that children wh care fr thers achieve mre than thse wh d nt. Kindness and achievement are nt mutually exclusive. One can strive t achieve their individual gals and be kind t thers.
Our drive t achieve is nt necessarily a bad thing. It can have a psitive impact n the lives f thers. The prblem ccurs when we pursue success nly fr individual purpses. This may ultimately cme at a cst t ur mental health, ur lved nes, and sciety.
32. Hw des the authr demnstrate that achievement is ranked tp?
A. By giving sme examples. B. By making sme cmments.
C. By presenting sme data. D. By cnducting a survey.
33. What is Paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A. Hw anxius and depressed the yuth feel.
B. Why the yuth are crazy abut success.
C. Hw adults trick the yuth.
D. What demands the yuth must meet.
34. T reduce current bsessin with achievement, the yuth shuld be educated t
A. care mre abut their mental health
B. give up individual success
C. give tp pririty t cntinued happiness
D. cmbine achievement and kindness
35. What's the authr's attitude twards the desire t achieve?
A. Objective. B. Critical.
C. Apprving. D. Optimistic.

__39__
And then add twr three extra letters each time, a few initials r abbreviatins(缩写形式)t remind yu f what this particular passwrd is fr. Fr example, yu might use BT fr yur phne accunt, r CC fr the camera club frum. S the final passwrd fr yur BBC accunt culd be: BBC86&£PiAs.
__40__ But each passwrd ends up being cmplex and unique, helping t prtect yur identity and giving yur memry a cracking wrkut every time.
A. Start using it as the basis fr every new passwrd yu set.
B. With a system like this, yu've gt a basic methd t fllw.
C. But with s many t keep track f, this can be hard t achieve.
D. S, if yu chse, “Play it again, Sam”, yu'd have the letters PIAS.
E. Spend a little time getting t knw hw t remember yur passwrds.
F. It is nt difficult t memrize yur passwrds nce yu get the hang f it.
G. Yu save time at the setting stage, and have a clear pattern fr yur memry t fllw.
