The measure(衡量) of a man’s real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out. — Thomas Macaulay(麦考莱)
Some thirty years ago, I was studying in a public school in New York. One day, Mrs. Nantette O’Neill gave a maths 16 to our class. When the papers were 17 she discovered that twelve boys had made exactly the same mistakes in the test.
There is nothing really new about cheating(作弊) in exams. Perhaps that was 18 Mrs. O’Neill didn’t even say a word about it. She only asked the twelve boys to 19 after class. I was one of the twelve.
Mrs. O’Neill asked 20 questions, and she did not scold(批评) us either. Instead, she wrote on the blackboard the 21 words by Thomas Macaulay. She then ordered us to 22 these words into our exercise-books one hundred times.
I don’t know about the other eleven boys. Speaking for 23 I can say: it was the most important single 24 of my life. Thirty years after being 25 to Macaulay’s words, they still seem to me the best yardstick(准绳), because they give us a 26 to measure ourselves rather than others.
27 of us are asked to made great decisions about nations going to war or armies going to fight. But all of us are called upon 28 to make a great many personal decisions. Should the wallet, found in the street, be put into a pocket or turned over to the policeman? Should the extra change received at the store be forgotten or 29 ? Nobody will know except 30 . But you have to live with yourself, and it is always better to live with someone you respect.

Comfort Zone(舒适区) is a state of mind where there is the least stress. However, stepping into the learning zone can help to bring out the best in us. Here are the reasons.
▲ Challenging yourself can help you do at your best.
Stepping outside one’s comfort zone is important to personal development. How can we expect to make ourselves better if we only stick to habit and routine (日常)? We should try something we might not succeed at.
▲Taking risks is what helps us grow.
As children, we’re natural risk-takers. But as we get older and learn to fear failure, we start trying fewer new things. We pay a heavy price for our fear of failure. There is no learning without some difficulty.
▲Facing new challenges can help us age better.
Our comfort zones seem to become smaller as we get older—but if we can keep expanding them, we’ll open ourselves up to a greater world as we age. As we step into the learning zone, we will get more comfortable with the skills gradually and we’ll start to move into the comfort zone. A study found that learning new life skills can help our brain stay sharp (敏锐的) as we get older.
However, don’t push yourself too far. Have you heard of "Yerkes-Dodson Law"? It means performance(表现) increases as stress grows, but only up to a point. If the level of stress becomes too high, performance will go down. When stress becomes too great for us to deal with, we enter the danger zone.
    36. Compared with the comfort zone, people in the learning zone may ____________.
    A. feel less stress B. face more challenges
    C. make fewer efforts D. refuse more changes
    37. From paragraph 3, we will learn less if we ________________.
    A. spend money B. fear failure C. take risks D. feel natural
    38. What does the underlined word “expanding” mean in paragraph 4?
    A. 缩小 B. 消灭 C. 扩大 D. 享受
    39. "Yerkes-Dodson Law" can be described by Graph ____________.

    40. The best title of the passage might be ______________.
    A. Comfort Zone Makes Us Safe B. What Is Comfort Zone
    C. Step Outside Comfort Zone D. Never Fear Comfort Zone

Dorothy and her friends were worried to get out of the forest as soon as they could, so they hurried along the yellow brick road. It was not long before they came to a wide river.
"What can we do now?" Dorothy exclaimed. "There isn't a tree tall enough to fall across this river. "
"There's no problem, "the Scarecrow (稻草人) said. "The Tin Woodman will use his axe(斧) to build a raft (木筏) . "
And this is what the Tin Woodman did. And while he was busy making the raft, Dorothy found some wild fruit and nuts, which she ate hungrily. Then, because it was taking the Tin Woodman a long time to finish the raft, Dorothy lay down and went to sleep.
The night passed without any problems, and the next morning the raft was ready. Dorothy sat in the middle with Toto. The Lion stood at one end and nearly sank (下沉) it because he was so big and heavy. The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman stood at the other end They both had long poles (杆子) that they used to push the raft through the water.
At first all went well, but then the river became so deep that the poles could not touch the bottom.
The Tin Woodman said, "If we cannot stay near the land and the yellow brick road, the Wicked Witch of the West will use her magic and put a spell (咒语) on us. "
"And then we won't meet the Wizard, and I won't get any brains, " the Scarecrow said.
"And I won't get a heart, "the Tin Woodman said.
"And I won't get any courage, "the Lion said.
"And I'll never get home to Kansas, " Dorothy said. "we must do something"
The Scarecrow was able to push the raft to the river bank. Dorothy, Toto, the Lion and the Tin Woodman got off. Before the Scarecrow could get off, however, the raft moved away from the river band and carried the Scarecrow down the river.
Dorothy said, "Perhaps we'll met the raft further down the river. The most important thing now is to get back to the yellow brick road and continue on our way to the City of Emeralds. "
The Lion and the Tin Woodman agreed, and they set off along the river bank. It was not long before they saw the Scarecrow. He was holding onto the pole in the middle of the river. There was no sight of the raft.

Hanukkah(光明节) ,the Festival of Lights, is celebrated with zeal (热情) by the Jewish people around the world. They celebrate the holiday with the lighting of the menorah (多连灯烛台) , traditional foods, games and gifts. Hanukkah is a Jewish festival. It falls on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kiskv (犹太教历). The festival celebrates the time, over 2,000 years ago, when the Jewish people fought against an emperor who prevented them from following their own traditions and religion (宗教) . When the Jewish people won back their temple in Jerusalem(耶路撒冷), they found there was only enough holy(神圣的) oil to keep the sacred light (神圣之灯) burning for one day. However, to their surprise, this small amount of oil kept the light burning for eight days and nights, until the people had time to make more oil.
At the center of the Hanukkah celebrations is a candle stick (called a Menorah) that holds nine candles. On the first night of Hanukkah the first candle is lit, and each day this candle is used to light another candle, until on the eighth day, the last day, all the candles are lit. During Hanukkah, people go to the synagogue (犹太教堂) to pray and to remember the miracle (奇迹) of the holy oil. Hanukkah is a time for family and friends to come together. They exchange gifts and greeting cards as well.Children always have a very good time at Hanukkah. Potato cakes, called latkes, are a traditional Hanukkah food. Hanukkah is a relatively small holiday in the Jewish year, however, the Hanukkah story tells of Jewish culture surviving in a non-Jewish world.
