Dressed up for space
Six hours of walking in space! On August 20, 2021, Chinese astronauts Liu Boming and NieHaisheng did the second spacewalk of the Shenzhou XII mission (任务). They set up equipment (设备) and lifted a camera outside the Tiangong space station.
Spacewalks can be dangerous. There is no air in space, of course. And it’s filled with a harmful radiation (辐射). But the spacesuits, although they are bulky, can protect astronauts.
A spacesuit is like a small space station. It has everything astronauts need when they carry out a spacewalk. For example, China’s Feitian spacesuits have six layers (层). The innermost layer collects astronauts’ urine (尿液). Then there are four layers that help control the temperature and air pressure inside the suit. Spacesuits are filled with air, so they look like they’re puffed up. The sixth layer is made of unusual fibers (纤维) that protect astronauts from radiation.
Astronauts are connected to the space station with safety ropes. The suit has headphones and speakers for astronauts to communicate. There is also a mirror on the wrist (手腕). Astronauts can check their suits by looking at it.
The first Feitian suit was made in 2008. ZhaiZhigang wore it to carry out China’s first spacewalk for about 19 minutes. The suits Chinese astronauts wear today are the second generation of Feitian. It can support walks as long as eight hours and can be used more often. The first generation could only be used five times within two years, while the second generation can be used 15 times within three years. Each suit costs around 30 million yuan and it takes four months to make just one!

When I was a boy, I had the craziest bus ride to school every day.
First I had to get up early, eat my breakfast and walk across a wooden bridge. Then I waited for the bus to arrive. When it got there, I got on. I was always one of the first ones on the bus. Even though I lived only four miles from school, my bus ride would last about 45 minutes!
First the bus went to the opposite direction for six miles, parked and waited for another bus, which we would then board. The new bus started up a long mountain road, stopping at every house to pick up more children. Finally, it arrived at the high school to drop off the older children before going to my school. It didn’t go straight there, but went down another road to pick up even more children. I usually got to school just before the first class bell rang.
Luckily, the ride home was different. This time, the children who were picked up last were the first to be dropped off. Since my house was along the way, I got dropped off after just 10 minutes or so. I remember I would run across that old bridge because I was so happy to be home again.
Looking back now, I can see my whole life here has been one long bus ride. It has been full of stops, starts, twists(曲折) and turns. Some of the passengers are mean, but most are kind. Sometimes the scenery has been beautiful and sometimes not so much. Sometimes the road has been smooth; other time it has been rough. Through it all, though, I know that one day I will be going home again. Do your best to enjoy the ride this life gives you.
51. What did the writer do on his way to school?
A. He had to change to another bus.
B. He got on a bus on a wooden bridge.
C. He got off the bus at the high school.
52. What can we learn about the writer’s bus ride from the text?
A. He was the first to be picked up.
B. The bus ride home was shorter than the morning trip.
C. It took him about 35 minutes to get home.
53. What does the underlined word “rough” mean in the last paragraph?
A. 光滑的 B. 平坦的 C. 崎岖的
54. What is the theme of the text?
A. Nature. B. Culture. C. Life.
55. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Wonderful childhood B. Craziest bus ride C. Enjoy what life gives us
