Everyone needs help sometimes. People depend on one another. That’s why communities (社区) have special people ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it.
For example, what would we do without a community fire station? If a home catches on fire, as Jackson’s house did last week, it might be burned down and people get hurt…or worse. We’re so lucky to have firemen to come to save people and put out the fire safely. If the fire station hadn’t come so fast, the Jacksons might lose everything.
And what about our local (当地的) police who protect our families, our homes and valuable things? The police helped so many families this year, especially saving people and pets and protecting our houses and other things after the heavy rains.
Think about all the other service workers we have in this community. We have people who collect waste and rubbish and keep our community sanitary. We have road workers who put up and repair traffic signs and fix holes in the streets to protect not just us, but our cars! And where would this community be without the teachers in our school and the doctors, and nurses in our community hospitals?
Think again about what we eat every day, think again about what we wear every day. We cannot produce them, but we use them all the time. We get a lot from all these tireless workers who keep our community running. We need these people in the community. We depend on each other. Let’s support each other and help each other. Only in this way can we make our community a better place.
26. What happened to the Jacksons last week?

28. What does the underlined word “sanitary” mean?

29. Which question could best help us find out the writer’s purpose?
A. Did the writer make us laugh?
B. Did the writer want us to do something?
C. Did the writer tell us about how to become a teacher?
30. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Policemen Save People’s Lives
B. People Depend on Each Other
C. Service Workers Do Important Jobs
D
At the beginning of 2021, the Chinese government said it will provide free COVID-19 vaccines (疫苗) to all Chinese citizens (公民). Since then, tens of millions of people, mainly key groups such as medical workers, customs officers and delivery workers, have gotten the vaccine.
China is also providing vaccines to other countries. It is sending COVID-19 vaccines to 28 countries and providing help to 69 countries in need, Xinhua reported. Most of these countries are developing nations, such as Mexico, Mongolia and Pakistan.
The vaccines China now using are called “inactivated vaccines” (灭活疫苗). There are “dead” viruses (病毒) in these vaccines. They cannot cause the disease, but can show your body what the virus looks like and make you immune (免疫) to it.
The vaccine is given by injection (注射). You need to get two doses (剂量). You should wait about two weeks after the first dose to get the second one.
The vaccines have been tested among three different age groups: 3 to 17, 18 to 59, and 60 and above. The 18-to-59 age group has the most data (数据) — the vaccines are safe for this group. The other two groups will be vaccinated soon.
People still need to wear a mask in public places after they are vaccinated. It takes a few weeks for the body to build immunity (免疫力) after vaccination. This means it’s possible for a person to get infected (传染的) just after vaccination. There’s also a small chance that your body won’t build immunity. So before the population becomes immune to the virus, people should keep wearing masks, practicing social distancing (社交隔离) and washing your hands after getting vaccinated.
31. What do we know about China’s COVID-19 vaccines?
A. They need active viruses to be useful.
B. The viruses in them won’t make people sick.

C. Chinese vaccines have been welcomed in many countries.
33. Who can get the COVID-19 vaccine right now?
A. All Chinese citizens. B. People aged 3 to 17. C. People aged 18 to 59.
34. What do we know about people who want to get a COVID-19 vaccine?
A. They need to get two doses during a week.
B. They only need to pay a lot of money.
C. They shouldn’t get other vaccines at the same time.
35. People should still wear masks after getting vaccinated because _______.
a. they can spread (传播) the virus to others more easily.

A well-known poem by Tang Dynasty (朝) poet Du Mu tells of a scene in early April: “Rains fall heavily as Qingming comes, and passersby with lowered spirits go.”
This scene takes place on Tomb Sweeping Day, also known as Qingming Festival. Tomb Sweeping Day is a traditional Chinese festival. It began in the Zhou Dynasty, over 2,500 years ago. Chinese people celebrate it to remember and honor their ancestors (祖先). This year, it falls on April 4.
Tomb Sweeping Day became a public holiday in the Chinese mainland in 2008. People have one day off for that day. On this day, families bring flowers, food and wine to the grave sites (墓地) of their ancestors. They place cakes, fruits in front of the graves and some may burn joss paper (冥币), as money for the dead. After that, they sweep the tombs and cherish (怀念) the memories of their dead family members. That’s because people think that visiting tombs during Qing Ming Festival is to show respect to their dead family members.
Tomb Sweeping Day is also the beginning of the time for gardening and outdoor activities in China. Families often get together for outings or to fly kites at this time.
China is not the only country to have such special days. The Obon Festival in Japan is similar to our Tomb Sweeping Day. But it is held from August 13 to 16. Besides visiting the tombs, people also light paper lanterns inside houses to call for the spirits of their ancestors. In Mexico, Day of the Dead is celebrated on Nov. 1 and 2 each year. People usually have altars (祭坛) at home.
41. When did Tomb Sweeping Day start?

43. What do Chinese people bring to the grave sites of their ancestors?
44. Why do Chinese people want to visit tombs during Qing Ming Festival?
