One afternoon, after finishing shopping in a supermarket, my family and I went to the checkout. I suddenly thought we didn’t need any of the junk, and we abandoned all of those, saving $300.
That got me thinking about all our pointless expenses in life. With a promise that we’d stop if it was killing us, I convinced the family to take the leap into frugality (节俭). The rules were that we would buy nothing for 30 days except absolutely essentials.
Our adventure began with a great start. By 9 a.m., my wife, Ruth, had already made cakes from old strawberries and picked flowers I didn’t even know we had in the garden. I cleared the car by hand for the first time for years. I read and returned the neighbor’s newspaper before he woke up. Total spending on the first day: $0.
As days turned into weeks, we became so proficient at living frugally. We started riding our bikes to save gas. My child’s finger painting was recycled as gift wrap for the homemade presents. We started to use an Internet application like Skype for free phone calls and ask neighbors with gardens for extra vegetables and herbs.
In the end, we saved more than $2000 by not spending for a month. When we began, I imagined we would rush out the moment we were done and buy a lot of things in the supermarket, then maybe hit the mall or go to the movies.
24. We can infer from the passage that before that very afternoon, the family _________.
A. had had higher income
B. had had a good habit of saving money
C. had often spent money without thinking much
D. hadn’t realized they would have met financial problems
25. How many things were mentioned about the things the family did to save on the first day of the “30 days”?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
26. What does the underlined word “proficient” mean in the fourth paragraph?
A. Arranged. B. Thrilled. C. Disappointed. D. Skilled.
27. This passage is mainly about _________.
A. how a family managed their daily life B. a family’s no-buying try
C. a family’s way of solving life problems D. how a new idea came up
C
Chinese cuisine is widely known and enjoyed all around the world. Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East—the ancient custom of “tonic food”.
Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil (麻油) hot pot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach, are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radish, are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.
The custom of employing tonic foods for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry (枸杞), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as over-worked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.
So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with a serving of pig’s brain soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for.
28. What is the present situation of tonic food?
A. It is catching less attention. B. It is enjoyed by many young people.
C. It is well known worldwide. D. It is becoming increasingly popular.
29. What is believed to benefit new mothers?
A. Chinese cabbage. B. Fruit tea. C. Sesame oil hot pot. D. Pig’s brain soup.
30. Which of the following best explains “catering” underlined in Paragraph 3?
A. Medicine. B. Restaurant. C. Education. D. Fashion.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Charm of Chinese Cuisine
B. The Popularity of Tonic Food
C. An Introduction to Chinese Tonic Food
D. Differences Between hot Food and Cold Food

Tracking wildlife is a tough job. Take the case of a one-eared leopard named Pavarotti.
Kasim Rafiq, a wildlife biologist at Liverpool John Moores University. “So I used to get up at the crack of dawn, follow his tracks and try and find him. So one day, I went out, and I was looking for him. And his tracks took me off road through this woodland area...and...”
Before he knew it, the wheel of his Land Rover was stuck in a deep hole. He wasted several hours getting it out. And then, on the way back to camp, he came across some local tour guides and their safari (观赏野兽的旅行) guests, who’d had way better luck spotting Pavarotti. “Basically, they laughed and they talked to me that they’d seen him that morning.”
Rafiq then realized that tourist wildlife sightings might be an untapped source of information about wild animals.
So he and his team worked with a safari lodge in Botswana to analyze 25,000 tourist photographs of wildlife. They compared those data to the estimates they made with traditional wildlife biology methods.
It turned out that the estimates from tourists’ photos were just as good as those gleaned (四处搜集) from traditional methods. And the tourists were actually the only ones to see elusive (难以捉摸的) leopards — the researchers would have missed the cats without the citizen science data. The results are in the journal Current Biology.
The idea is not to put wildlife researchers out of a job. “The reality is there are so many interesting things we still have to find out about these large carnivores (食肉动物) and so many conservation (保护) projects that need to be carried out that we don’t have the time or resources to do them all.” And tourist photos might help make sure that all the local carnivores are spotted.
Thanks for listening for Scientific American-60-Second Science. I’m Christopher Intagliata.
32. What happened to Rafiq when he tracked Pavarotti?
A. He was lost in the woods.
B. He was trapped in a deep hole.
C. He found Pavarotti with tourists’ help.
D. He met Pavarotti on the way back to camp.
33. Why can biologists track animals from tourists’ photographs?
A. The photos are sources of information about wildlife.
B. The photos are mirrors of the wildlife researchers’ life.
C. The photos taken by tourists are of high quality.
D. The photos taken by tourists are especially beautiful.
34. What can we infer from paragraph 6?
A. The researchers have missed the data of cats.
B. The information from tourists’ photos was equally good.
C. The value of tourist photos hasn’t been proven.
D. Only the traditional methods can track wildlife.
35. Where can we find the article?
A. On TV. B. In a magazine. C. On a radio. D. In a book.

Endangered species
An endangered species is a group of animals that could soon become extinct. ___36___ Many species are nearly extinct and could disappear off the face of the earth very soon if we don’t do anything to save them. There are many reasons why species become endangered.
Habitat destruction is the main reason why animals become endangered and this happens in two ways. When humans move into a new area, the animals’ habitat is destroyed and there is nowhere for them to live and nothing to eat because humans chop down trees and build houses and farms. ___37___ Chemicals in rivers and poisons on farms cause the destruction of animals’ homes and food supplies.
Endangered species are also the result of hunting and fishing. Animals have been brought to the edge of extinction because they are killed for their highly-valued meat, fur, bones or skin, or just for sport. ___38___
___39___ We should take care not to pollute natural areas, and farmers or companies who destroy animal habitats should face severe financial penalties. The public can help out by refusing to buy any products made from these animals’ body parts. Governments can help, too, by making it against the law to hunt, fish or trade in endangered species. They can also provide funding for animal sanctuaries (禁猎区), to protect animals from extinction by breeding more endangered animals, which they later release into the wild. ___40___
A. Animal habitats are also destroyed because of pollution.
B. Eventually, all the creatures on Earth will enjoy being together.
C. Recent changes, however, have helped to improve the situation.
D. So what can individuals and governments do to protect endangered species?
E. Extinction happens when the last of the species has died out and there will be no more.
F. If we all cooperate and take these steps, we will protect these animals for future generations.
G. Overfishing has resulted in many large sea creatures becoming endangered species, like sharks.

根据第一段“One afternoon, after finishing shopping in a supermarket, my family and I went to the checkout. I suddenly thought we didn’t need any of the junk, and we abandoned all of those, saving $300.”(一天下午,在超市买完东西后,我和我的家人去结帐。 和第二段“That got me thinking about all our pointless expenses in life…The rules were that we would buy nothing for 30 days except absolutely essentials.”(这让我想到了我们生活中所有无意义的花费。
根据第三段“Our adventure began with a great start. By 9 a.m., my wife, Ruth, had already made cakes from old strawberries and picked flowers I didn’t even know we had in the garden…Total spending on the first day: $0.”(我们的冒险从一个伟大的开端开始。

根据第一段“One afternoon, after finishing shopping in a supermarket, my family and I went to the checkout. I suddenly thought we didn’t need any of the junk, and we abandoned all of those, saving $300.”(一天下午,在超市买完东西后,我和我的家人去结帐。 和最后一段“In the end, we saved more than $2000 by not spending for a month.”(最后,我们一个月不花钱,节省了两千多美元。)

根据第二段中“For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil (麻油) hot pot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body.”
根据后文“Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry (枸杞), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish.”
根据文章第一段提出滋补品,第二段中“Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness.(滋补品是指为了增进健康或避免疾病而食用的食物)”以及第三段中“The custom of employing tonic foods for a healthier life also influences the catering industry.(利用滋补品养生的习俗也影响着饮食业)”可知,文章主要介绍了滋补品的功效和对餐饮业的影响。

根据第六段第一句话“It turned out that the estimates from tourists’ photos were just as good as those gleaned (四处搜集) from traditional methods.(结果证明,从游客照片中得出的估计结果与从传统方法中得出的结果一样好)”可推知,从游客照片中得到的信息也很好。故选B。
根据最后一段“Thanks for listening for Scientific American-60-Second Science. I’m Christopher Intagliata.(感谢收听科学美国60秒科学。我是Christopher Intagliata)”可推知,本文出自一个电台节目。故选C。

They can also provide funding for animal sanctuaries (禁猎区), to protect animals from extinction by breeding more endangered animals, which they later release into the wild.

4. one→ones
5. immediate→immediately
6. 在filled后加with
7. seats→seat
8. 去掉about
9. terrifying→terrified
10. enjoy→enjoying
故将many改为much。

Dear Tony,
I'm sorry to hear that you feel it difficult to accustom yourself to your new school life in America. As your best friend, I’d like to give you some suggestions.
First of all, learning English well is a must. Only when you speak English fluently can you find more opportunities to communicate with others. Secondly, you should learn to study independently. But don’t be afraid of asking the teacher for help when you meet some problems. What’s more, try to make more friends and take part in some school activities actively, which will help you forget your loneliness and make your life more interesting as well. Of course, sometimes reading some interesting books can also give you great fun.
What do you think of my opinion? Believe in yourself and you will enjoy your new school life there soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
