    Cedar Creek Treehouse (雪松溪树屋)
Cedar Creek Treehouse is very high. About 15m above ground, it is wrapped around the trunk of an enormous 200-year-old red cedar tree. The treehouse is the brainchild of Bill Compher, who has created this special building at the border between Mount Rainier National Park and theGifford Pinchot National Forest in Washington.
Access is along a 25m-long suspension bridge, then up a five-story stairway whose fourth floor is a glass observation area, where you can swing in a hammock (吊床)and enjoy the mountain views. On the fifth floor, the treehouse is divided into two levels: from the entrance there’s a surprisingly spacious living room, kitchen, bathroom and sunroom, while upstairs there are two double beds and skylights so you can take in the night sky.
But if this isn’t enough of a bird’s-eye view, you can climb up a separate 30m stairway, walk across another suspension bridge to a glass observatory and admire the 360-degree views of the forest. But this is not for everyone. “Climbing an 85-foot staircase, walking a 45-foot-long suspension bridge to a treehouse observatory 100 feet in the sky... that takes a special kind of person,”wrote Compher on his website.
Need to know: Kids under 10 are not allowed inside the treehouse. Rates are $250 for two people per night, and $25 for each additional guest.
    21. What can a guest do on the fifth floor?
    A. Cook some food. B. Rest in a hammock.
    C. Stay in a glass observatory. D. Walk on a suspension bridge.
    22. Why did Compher write the post on his website?
    A. To attract visitors. B. To give a warning.
    C. To make a comparison. D. To provide instructions.
23.How much should four people pay for an overnight stay at CedarCreek Treehouse?
    A. $275. B. $300. C. $500. D. $550.
    B
My daughter is ten. I can feel time creeping up on (开始影响) us. And lately it’s been hitting me in an unexpected location.
    Bedtime reading.
From the earliest days of my daughter’s life, I would read to her when it was time to go to sleep. It was our nightly tradition and we loved it. I got great parental satisfaction from how well my kid spoke at a young age.
But she’s getting older. And our bedtime reading tradition is starting to show signs of that age. Her books are getting more complex. In the old days, we’d read a few picture books before bed. But her literary tastes have expanded so vastly now. She spent months reading the Harry Potter series, and, once done, she just had a thirst for more. She wanted bigger, longer, more meaningful books. If we read one of these books together at bedtime, it can take weeks or months for us to get through it.
Plus, she’s getting bigger. In the old days, it was fine that I took up 90% of her twin bed, but now she needs more room and we struggle to both fit onto the bed, which makes our bedtime reading even more awkward.
I’m not willing to give up on bedtime reading yet, and neither is my daughter. I once tried to bring up the subject of not reading anymore and she squashed it immediately. I could even see her protest in her eyes. Our reading tradition might be on its last legs, which, if I’m being honest, breaks my heart.
However, I don’t think I need to worry about my daughter not reading anymore. It’s part of her DNA. I’ll let her read her books by herself and I’ll read mine by myself and I will force us to exchange opinions on them over breakfast the next morning. If I’m going to lose our old reading tradition, I will start another. Some things are worth fighting for, and reading is one of them.
    24. How did bedtime reading benefit his daughter according to the author?
    A. It improved her sleep quality.
    B. It reduced her stress and anxiety.
    C. It helped to develop her language ability.
    D. It strengthened her bonds with kids of her age.
    25. Why does the author think their bedtime reading tradition may come to an end?
    A. His daughter becomes unwilling to lie on his bed.
    B. He is too busy to read long books to his daughter.
    C. He has lost interest in his daughter’s books.
    D. His daughter has outgrown bedtime reading.
    26. What does the underlined word “squashed” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
    A. Accepted B. Refused C. Understood D. Considered
    27. What tradition does the author intend to start with his daughter?
    A. Discussing books at breakfast time. B. Reading complex books at bedtime.
    C. Recommending books to each other. D. Enjoying quiet reading together.
    C
You’ve probably experienced this before: when returning from a round trip, the trip home felt shorter. What is the scientific basis for this?
Some theories include the power of expectation. Especially for vacations, the anticipation of finally reaching your destination can make the experience of traveling there feel longer because you can’t wait to get there. Additionally, if the trip to the location takes longer than expected, we may readjust our expectations of the length of the trip so that the trip back feels shorter and thus more pleasant.
Another theory is how humans take time to learn and become more familiar with new sights. When faced with new stimuli or experiences, we feel as if time is getting slower to allow more brain processing time. This contributes to why elder people often remark that time goes faster the more they age because being older often means fewer new experiences, so there is less need for the brain to interpret time more slowly to pay more attention to solving a problem.
In the case of the “return trip effect,” after viewing the landmarks on the road while getting to the destination, it is easier to recognize these points on the way back. Having less sense of puzzle and being more certain of one’s surroundings can make time feel faster. This is similar to how many activities can feel natural after learning the process. For example, when you first learn to ride a bike, you carefully strategize your speed and balance, but after a while of practicing, your mind is freer to wander off.
This “return trip effect” is most notably noticed after reflecting on how long a trip to an unfamiliar location took. This explains why the “return trip effect” is usually associated with vacations and not daily commutes (通勤) to work or school because by then, the sights are so familiar that humans can more accurately measure the time spent going to and back from a location.
    28. Why do elder people feel time flies?
    A. They have fewer new stimuli to process.
    B. They have low expectations for the future.
    C. Their problem-solving ability declines.
    D. Their brain tends to misinterpret time.
    29. What does the example of learning to ride a bike in paragraph 4 prove?
    A. Practice makes perfect.
    B. Familiarity speeds up time.
    C. The journey of life is full of uncertainties.
    D. Similar landmarks cause confusion with time.
    30. Which trip may feel the longest?
    A. The trip to school. B. The trip to a strange place.
    C. The trip home from school. D. The trip home from a strange place.
    31. What is the best title for the text?
    A. How can we make a long trip relatively short?
    B. What is the scientific basis for time travel?
    C. How long can the “return trip effect” last?
    D. Why does the “return trip effect” occur?

    Have a drink of water.
(35)_____________But you do want to drink enough water to keep your body functioning well. Try to get to the fridge or water cooler for a refill every few hours. The walk there will also help you wake up.

    A Narrow Escape
A holiday in Penang was an annual affair for my family. My parents grew up in Penang and are very fond of Penang food. In December every year, we would drive up to the island to spend three days visiting their favorite restaurants.
This year, we started our journey up north on a Friday morning. The drive up was punctuated (不时打断) by stops at Bidor town and Kampar so it took us six hours to reach our destination. We always stayed at one of the hotels in Batu Ferringhi. The beach was just a short walk from the hotel entrance and our rooms had a lovely view of the sea. We spent our first evening playing on the beach. After dinner, we returned to our rooms to play card games. Mу parents had a rule for our holidays which was that we spent time doing things together. There was to be no TV and no internet. We really enjoyed ourselves together.
The next morning, we went to Bukit Bendera, the Malay name of the Penang Hill, and then spent the rest of the afternoon in town visiting our favorite shops. These lovely shops never failed to amaze us. As we were having tea at a coffee shop, we overheard people talking about an earthquake near Sumatra, an island in Indonesia. We headed back to the hotel and then went to the beach. We took a walk along the beach, picking up seashells. Suddenly I noticed a strange thing. The sea seemed to be retreating(后退) from the shore. I called my father to look at the curious occurrence. My father took one look and went pale. We saw a grey line in the distance moving towards the shore. It seemed to grow taller by the second.
    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右。
    2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

My father shouted at us to run back to the hotel.

We stopped on the fourth floor and looked down at the rushing water below us, which stopped rising.

    第二节 读后续写(满分20分)
    One possible version:
My father shouted at us to run back to the hotel. He grabbed my hand and pulled me with him. Other people on the beach also began to flee in panic. Upon reaching the entrance hall of the hotel, my father pushed us towards the stairs in an instant. Hardly had we reached the first floor when we heard the horrible sound of rushing water and glass breaking. I couldn’t help screaming and trembled with fear while my father dragged us to keep climbing without delay. The water level rose so fast that it wet my feet as I ran the last few steps to the third floor.
We stopped on the fourth floor and looked down at the rushing water below us, which had stopped rising. After what seemed like a century, it began to drop. As we stepped down cautiously, we found the entrance hall of the hotel was unrecognizable with dirt and broken furniture everywhere. Some people with minor injuries were crying in shock and those severely injured were rushed to hospital by the ambulances through all the chaos and confusion. While helping others out, I realized how lucky we were to have had a narrow escape and that the happiest thing for a family was being together safe and sound.

    Text 1
W: Hello Craig, why are you standing outside in the cold? Is it too hot in your shop?
M: No, there’s a strong smell of smoke inside. I’m staying outside until the smell is gone. (1)
W: You need a coat in this weather.
    Text 2
M: Oh no, it looks like we might be in trouble. There’s a policeman coming towards us.
W: What? Oh, relax. Tony is a friend of your dad’s. (2) Eric, Tony and Sean used to go everywhere together. He’s coming over for a chat.
    Text 3
W: Parking in the city is difficult. Even if I find a parking lot, it often costs a lot.
M: You don’t live so far from work. Why not go on foot? (3) Thus, you could keep fit and save on gym fees.
    Text 4
    W: Any news about Joe?
M: No, I saw the ambulance take him away. The teacher called his family. I bet it was a shock for them.
W: It looked painful, the way he hurt his ankle. I hope he’s OK. (4)
    Text 5
W: Can you tell me about these mobile phones?
M: The basic model is £125. (5) With a gold case, it’s £150. If you want one with all the latest features, that will be £500.
    W: Really, I just need a basic one. (5)
    Text 6
M: Burton and Taylor Limited, how can I help you?
W: Hello, my name is Eleanor Staples. I’m calling about your advertisement for a salesperson. (6)
M: Ah, you need to speak to Mr. Burton. (7) He’s dealing with the applications, but he’s in a meeting at the moment. I’ll put you through to his secretary. (7)
W: Thank you. Do you have any idea how long his meeting will last? I don’t want to miss him if he calls me back.
M: I’m not sure about that but I’m sure his secretary will be able to supply you with all the details.
    W: OK, thanks very much.
    Text 7
W: How are you, Barry? Have you got your final exams out of the way?
M: Yes, I had my last one this morning. How about you?
W: I finished mine yesterday afternoon.
M: This calls for a celebration for the end of this school term. (8)
W: What did you have in mind?
M: A party that starts in the evening might be good. We can play with friends all night.
W: Trouble is, some friends are still preparing for their exams. They wouldn’t be able to come.
M: You have a point. What do you suggest?
W: We could buy some snacks and eat them here in the cafeteria. (9)
M: To celebrate the end of the term? That’s a bit boring, isn’t it? Let’s go out for a meal. (10)
    Text 8 (第11题为总结题)
    W: I’m so sad for Joyce. (13)
M: Yes, it’s awful that her two dogs died. She was accompanied by them for so long.
W: How will she handle it on her own? They used to be together all the time.
    M: Does she have children?
W: I’ve never seen any children going to her house.
    M: What about other relatives?
W: I know she has an older brother but he lives far away.
M: She must be all alone. Do you think we should do something to help her?
W: Of course. She’s such a nice person. Perhaps we should ask if the others in the community would also like to be with her. (12)
M: We should — but how?
W: We could help her with some housework. She’ll probably be glad of that.
M: Good idea. You could help take care of her garden and I could clean the house with her. (13) She will be happy.
    W: Agreed. (13)
    Text 9
W: How do you feel about living in Beijing, Steven? (16) Do you ever get lonely?
M: Well, I’ve made some good friends here, but yes, I do sometimes.
W: Me too. I’m from the US and this is the opposite side of the world. (14) I can’t just call round to see my mom and dad as before.
M: What do you think of the Chinese food, Carly? (14) (15)
W: It’s very nice. Last year when my sister came to see me at Christmas, (15) we had our own little celebration with Chinese food.
M: That’s one great thing about living in China.
W: And people are friendly. I wasn’t expecting that when I first came here, but everyone has been so kind.
M: Have you visited many places? I think the temples are just amazing.
W: Not yet. China must be a perfect place for a British man like you. There is so much tea everywhere. British people love drinking tea, don’t they?
M: Yes, but Chinese tea is too bitter for me. (16) I prefer proper English tea. We don’t make it the Chinese way. We put milk in it.
    Text 10
You may have never heard of Joanne Kovacs, but there is a good chance you have seen a drawing of her body. Joanne was born in Ohio, and in the 1930s when she was a teenager, she signed up to be a model to earn some money. (17) She ended up modeling for two artists named Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel. They were creating what would become their most famous comic book, Superman. They drew Joanne and used her body for the character of Lois Lane, a reporter who would later become Superman’s wife. Joanne ended up marrying one of the men who had drawn her, Jerry Siegel, in 1948. (18) She showed the same spirit and determination as her comic book character. When her husband died in 1996, she fought for him to be regarded as the creator of Superman when the character appeared in films and TV shows. In 2006, Joanne won her court case, (19) and won a second court case in 2008. Not only did she make sure her husband’s memory was honored, but she managed to get the money they were due. With the money, her daughter and grandchildren would be taken good care of. She died a few years later in 2011, in their family home in California. (20)
