Knock, knock. Starting from Nov. 1, 2020, people will be knocking on doors across the country to collect personal information. But don't panic. This is for the seventh national population census. The Chinese population census takes place every 10 years. It gathers data including name, age, ID number, gender, education, job, marital status and housing situation.

Tracking down more than 1 billion Chinese citizens is by no means easy. This year, about 7 million staff will be needed to visit homes for registration work, according to Xinhua. New methods will also be used during this census, including online information registration, application of electronic devices and big data. Compared with previous surveys, new methods will be convenient for people who are not living where they are officially registered, as well as those who do not want to be bothered by census takers' door-to-door surveys. The new methods also reduce census takers' workload.

The data is expected to give a full picture of the population, including its size, structure and distribution and recent changes. It provides support for making national development policies.

The census has a large impact on our lives. For instance, areas with a high number of children may receive more funding for public schools. Researchers can use the results to investigate population trends in different cities. The census will help to find out the number of foreigners living in China. It can also tell how many Chinese people have moved to other countries.

However, citizens' privacy concerns could be one of the biggest challenges. Some may not be willing to give their personal information to census takers because they are worried about what the data would be used for. There are also worries about privacy leakage among the public. In response to such concerns, Jiangsu's pilot work zone allowed residents to upload personal data on their own through WeChat, which avoids information leakage. The data will be delivered directly to the National Bureau of Statistics through a WeChat program.

    24. Which can be inferred about the census according to the text?

    A. This census will be conducted only by knocking on doors.

    B. This census will be easy by taking some new methods.

    C. It gathers data including your name, age, and education.

    D. The previous census was likely to begin around 2010.

    25. Which of the following may be the influence the census has on citizens' lives?

    A. Areas with a high number of children will receive the most funding.

    B. Researchers can use population trends to investigate the results.

    C. The census will help to drive out the foreigners living in China.

    D. The census will help to learn about the immigration situation.

    26. Why are some people not willing to give their personal information to census takers?

    A. Because they are worried that the data would be used.

    B. Because their privacy will be known by the government.

    C. Because their information can be stolen by a man of ill will.

D Because the data will be uploaded through a WeChat program.

    27. In which section is the passage most probably taken from?

    A. Society B. Psychology C. Science D. Entertainment

    C

One of the most traditional British holidays is the "seaside holiday". Typically, families get on a train or into a car and travel to British seaside towns. They sunbathe on the beach, buy ice creams, eat fish and chips, build sandcastles and so on.

In the early 1970s, air travel became affordable for the average family in the UK, and more and more British people started travelling abroad for their summer holidays. After all, the British weather isn't very good, even in summer, so a lot leave the UK for a vacation. Particularly popular with families on a budget is the "package holiday", where the cost of flights and accommodation are offered at a discounted price by travel agents.

In the 1980s and 1990s, young people in the UK became more wealthy, or at least had more disposable income. As a result, young people started to go abroad in groups, to places such as Spain and Greece. Once at their destination, they socialized with other groups of young people and had one long party.

British holidaying habits have begun to change, however. Climate change means that the UK now has a warmer climate than before, so people don't always feel they need to go overseas to find good weather. Also, the world seems a less certain place as interconnected economics rise and fall, which means that the cost of foreign holidays is less predictable than it used to be. As a result, more and more Britons are choosing to spend their summer holidays in the UK.

In the UK, the domestic tourism industry——when people go on holiday in their own country——is healthier than it has been in decades. There is now an increased appreciation among Britons for the diversity of the UK. It is not just the geography and the diversity of climate-based activities on offer. It's also the diversity of the cultures in the UK that is beginning to be of interest to domestic tourists.

The UK has always been famous for its international explorers, but now it is starting to discover itself.

    28. What mainly caused Britons to travel abroad for holidays in the early 1970s?

    A. The bad weather in the UK. B. The trend of going overseas.

    C. The lower cost of flights. D. The rise of tourism industry.

    29. What does the underlined word "disposable" mean in the third paragraph?

    A. Steady in amount.  B. Available for use.

    C. Easy to handle.  D. Flexible to change.

    30. What can we learn from the passage?

    A. Both domestic and international tourists are interested in the diversity of the UK.

    B. Steady interconnected economics encourage more Britons to holiday in the UK.

    C. Package holiday was particularly popular with rich families in the early 1970s.

    D. Climate change has an impact on the change of British holidaying habits.

    31. What's the author's attitude towards UK's domestic tourism industry?

    A. Uncertain. B. Pessimistic. C. Optimistic. D. Critical.

    D

They say procrastination is the thief of time——actually deadlines are. New research has found that if you want someone to help you out with something. it is best not to set a deadline at all. But if you do set a deadline, make it short.

Professor Stephen Knowles tested the effect of deadline length on task completion for their research. Participants were invited to complete an online survey concerning a charity donation. They were given either one week, one month, or no deadline to respond. Professor Knowles says although the topic of the survey was about charity, the results are true of any situation where someone asks another person for help.

The study found responses to the survey were lowest for the one-month deadline and highest when no deadline was specified(明确规定). No deadline and the one-week deadline led to many early responses, while a long deadline appeared to give people permission to procrastinate. And then forget. Professor Knowles wasn't surprised to find that specifying a shorter deadline increased the chances of receiving a response compared to a longer deadline. However, he did find it interesting that they received the most responses when no deadline was specified.

"We interpret this as evidence that specifying a longer deadline, as opposed to a short deadline or no deadline at all, removes the urgency to act," he says. "People therefore put off undertaking the task, and since they are inattentive or forget, postponing it results in lower response rates."

He says of the research that it is possible that not specifying a deadline might still have led participants to assume that there is an unspoken deadline. Professor Knowles hopes his research can help reduce the amount of procrastinating people do. "Many people procrastinate. They have the best intentions of helping someone out, but just do not get around to doing it."

    32. Why did Professor Knowles do the research?

    A. To study the role a deadline plays in procrastination.

    B. To find out whether people are interested in charity.

    C. To attract public attention to the effects of procrastination.

    D. To test the effect of procrastination on task completion.

    33. What most likely leads to procrastination?

    A. No deadlines.  B. Short deadlines.

    C. Specific deadlines.  D. Long deadlines.

    34. Why do people procrastinate when given a long deadline?

    A. They oppose the deadline. B. They are unwilling to act.

    C. They lack a sense of urgency. D. They are too busy to remember.

    35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A. Procrastination----the Thief of Time

    B. Procrastination----an Urgent Problem to Solve

    C. Deadline----a Result of Procrastination

    D. Deadline----the Key to Reducing Procrastination

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。

The reasons skiers and snowboarders wear goggles or glasses might seem a little obvious, especially if you've ever hit the slopes yourself. Sunlight reflected off the snow can make it hard to see, and UV rays can even damage your eyesight. Special colored lenses also create contrast, so your whole path won't look like one flat expanse of whiteness.    36

Olympic speed skaters, meanwhile, are racing inside on smooth ice.    37

According to NBC Olympics, glasses can increase visibility on indoor tracks, too.    38    And while the ice may look smooth from a distance, those sharp blades can kick up ice chips that could pose problems if they end up in your eyes. In the event of a crash, shatter-proof glasses also protect skaters' eyes from errant blades and body parts.

39    Shot-track speed skaters (who race around a roughly 11-meter track) can go as fast as 30 miles per hour or more, and long-track speed skaters (whose track is 400 meters long) sometimes hit about 35 miles per hour. The wind resistance generated by such speed-in a chilly arena——is enough to make any skater's eyes start streaming with tears. Picture leaning your head out the window of a car that's going around 35 miles per hour on a cold day: You'd probably want to be wearing glasses, too.

That said, glasses aren't a requirement.    40    Belgium's Stijn Desmet, for example, has raced in Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games without eyewear, as has China's Zhang Chutong.

    A. How do they wear glasses?

    B. So why do they wear glasses?

    C. Some skiers are afraid of the sunlight.

    D. Some skaters' lenses are colored to help with that.

    E. You'll occasionally see speed skaters with uncovered faces.

    F. Not to mention that eyewear protects your eyes from any snow you displace.

    G. But the biggest reason speed skaters opt for eyewear just might be their speed.

No sooner had we got to the farm than we got down to picking under the guidance of the farmers. Each of us carried a basket and a pair of scissors, quickly climbed up the ladder and started to pick. On our faces poured sweat together with heartfelt smiles, and all of us spent a meaningful and pleasant day.

M: Yeah, my wounds don't hurt that much But I still have a fever.

    (Text 3)

M: Mom. have you seen my notebook? I put it on my desk this morning.

W: The blue one? I thought it was a storybook and put it into the bookcase.

    (Text 4)

M: I don't believe anyone can really take three showers a day. That's crazy.

W: Maybe. But you know, that's kind of the nom actually these days——after waking up, before going to bed and after working out.

    (Text 5)

W: What would you do if you had super powers?

M: I wanted to set up a special team to explore the outer space, but I suppose helping people who are ill and sick would be more meaningful.

W: Well, those are really big dreams. I just wish I could deal with all the problems I meet in study.

    (Text 6)

M: They have those really high-class toilets in Japan, with electronic covers and self-warning seats.

W: Yeah. And I heard the latest ones are clear with glass walls.

M: What? So they can be seen through? Wouldn't that be awkward?

W: That is not the case. When people enter the toilet and lock the door, the walls will become colored, so no one can really see in when people are using it.

M: Well, I get it. Still a bit strange, though.

    (Text 7)

M: Sarah, I heard you worked at a TV station once. Can you tell me about that?

W: Sure. When I was living in Florida, I worked for Sunshine TV. I was making TV shows and films. It was an interesting job. I worked from 7 o'clock in the evening until 5 the next morning.

M: Okay. Were you interested in film-making before you got that job?

W: Not really. I was just trying to pay bills. At that time, I was actually doing five different jobs.

    (Text 8)

M: Lisa, have you ever shopped online?

W: Of course. Why do you ask?

M: It's the topic of our group discussion. But I don't really have much online shopping experience. I think you might be able to tell me about it, so...

W: Uh-huh, got it. Actually, I've just bought many things online recently. A calendar for my mother, some tennis balls for my father, and a swimsuit for my sister. It's her birthday next Friday.

M: Hmm, you must be a big fan of online shopping.

W: Maybe. But I think it's no big deal. Online shopping is really convenient. It saves time and usually saves money. And more importantly, it offers a lot of choices, so we can buy things that physical stores often don't have.

    M: OK. Keep going.

    (Text 9)

W: Good afternoon, sir. How can I help you?

M: Oh, hello. I'm interested in the trips you offer along the coast.

W: OK. Which one do you want to choose?

M: Well, I saw there was sunbathing, ocean surfing...But what's the one with whales?

W: That's our Whale Watch Experience. It's very popular and it's based in our Dream Town with nice beaches.

M: Good. Whales are the cutest. How do I get there, by boat or coach?

W: Actually it's by minibus. We like to keep those tours small and personal.

M: OK. Do you run these tours often?

W: Well, it depends on the time of year. In low seasons, we usually do them once or twice a month. But on hot days like now, we do them every weekend.

M: That is to say, the next tour's going on the June 19th?

    W: Yes.

    M: OK. I'll go then.

    (Text 10)

Tap Dance is a special dance form. It dates back to the 1700s. The tap dancers make different moves through their skills of footwork. In 1844, an African American dancer, William Henry Lane beat the famous Irish American dancer, John Diamond, in a competition in New York. And this won him the title of the Champion Dancer of the World. And in today's world, we have Michelle Dorrance. Dorrance is a well-known female tap dancer. She got her degree in art from the Gallatin School at New York University in 2001. After that, she has been a member of the Broadway Dance Center since 2002. During all these years, she has created many wonderful tap dance works. And she aims to drive the art of tap dance to a higher level. In SOUNDspace in 2011, she shapes the stage space by moving dancers in and out of view. The Blues Project in 2013 describes the history of blues. Up to now, tap dance has become one of the most popular dances in the world. However, there are still some misunderstandings about it...
