Coffee is an important part of Italian culture and since arriving here over six months ago, I have drunk a lot of it!
Of course, coffee is also very popular in the UK but coffee culture in Italy is a completely different story. In Italy, when you order a coffee in a café or bar, you are served with a tiny, bitter espresso. This is “normal coffee” for Italians and they are not so interested in the huge coffees that we drink in the UK. If you want more than one sip(小口)of coffee in Italy, lungo is a good choice. It is espresso with a little more water added, but still served in a small cup. In addition, while takeaway coffee is quite popular among Brits, it is not very common at all in Italy. Generally, Italians prefer to drink their tiny coffees while standing at the bar and, for many, this short break is an important part of their day.
Usually, breakfast in a bar in Italy includes a coffee and a pastry(酥皮糕点). I have been spoiled for choice with lovely cafés in the Italian town I’m living in. These cafés sell different kinds of mouth-watering pastries --- either plain(无馅料的)or filled with cream, chocolate, etc. --- as well as delicious coffee. Cappuccinos are very popular at breakfast time and, for me, a creamy cappuccino and a pastry with chocolate is the perfect way to start the day.
Finally, I have found that coffee in Italy is so much cheaper than coffee in the UK. Normally, an espresso or a macchiato (an espresso with a drop of milk) costs around a euro and a cappuccino about1.50!They are small, of course, but this means that in Italy it is possible to go out for coffee every day without breaking the bank.
24. How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed?
A. By comparison. B. By space. C. By example. D. By time.
25. Which coffee will you get in Italy if you order one without special instructions?
A. Lungo. B. Espresso. C. Cappuccino. D. Macchiato.
26. What can we learn about the coffee culture in Italy?
A. Takeaway coffee is very popular among Italians.
B. Coffees are often served along with pastries during breakfasts.
C. Italians like to take short breaks from work for coffee.
D. Italians are very often seen drinking huge coffees.
27. What does the author think of Italian coffee?
A. She loves its bitter taste. B. It is too expensive for her.
C. The cup is too small. D. It is a good choice for breakfast.
C
Christy and Ted Wilson set aside time every Sunday evening to go over their shared to-do list. Most of the items are tasks like planning doctor appointments and organizing play dates for their three young children.
In every relationship, there’s a question of who is pulling their weight around the house. Now that a majority of married-couple families have two working parents, the old “rough day at the office” excuse doesn’t really cut it.
Women still handle more of the household activities, but men increasingly are spending time on food preparation and cleanup. To keep things fair or at least to avoid fights, couples are turning to technology. They are using project management apps designed for the workplace to divide up and track household to-dos and reserving a part of their date nights to compare chores. In some cases, they are even turning it into a game, setting rewards for getting things done.
The imbalance doesn’t always follow gender lines (性别界线). There was a time when Mr. Wilson was in more of a “Mr. Mom” role: He was attending business school, while Mrs. Wilson was clocking long hours as a lawyer. So Mr. Wilson had more flexibility to take on more of the child-care and household-management work. The couple’s roles changed after Mr. Wilson graduated and started an e-commerce company. “We have had a lot of switching back and forth(反复来回)of who was in the driver’s seat in terms of household management so one person wasn’t too put upon,” she said. They began using calendars to keep the family schedules straight and sharing a to-do list in the Notes app on their phones. Each can take on chores the other dislikes.
28. What does the underlined part “pulling their weight around the house” in Paragraph 2
probably mean?
A. Making excuses for not doing any housework.
B. Sharing the stress of buying a house.
C. Running around the house to lose weight.
D. Taking on the household chores.
29. Why does the couple turn to project management apps?
A. To stop their arguments over dates.
B. To play phone games with each other.
C. To reward themselves for doing the housework.
D. To divide up and follow household to-dos.
30. What can we infer from the Wilsons’ example?
A. Understanding can help settle arguments.
B. Couples need to switch their roles each day.
C. Gender plays a key role in management.
D. Digital apps can only handle household arguments.
31. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Ways to Finish Housework B. Advantages of the Notes App
C. Technology Helps to Divide Chores D. Working Parents Face Difficulties
D
We now are in a “golden age” of space --- sample retrieval(取回)and exploration. Space agencies around the world are busy collecting, or planning to collect, samples from celestial bodies (天体). China’s Chang’e 5 mission is the most recent sample-return mission that has been successfully completed. On Dec 17, the Chang’e 5 lunar probe(探测器)returned home and landed in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region after weeks of space travel, China Daily reported. This was the world’s first lunar sample-return mission since 1976. The mission retrieved an incredible 1,713 grams of samples of rocks and dust.
Another space sample-return mission was completed on Dec 6. Japan’s Hayabusa 2 probe returned a capsule to Earth containing valuable samples from the asteroid(小行星) Ryugu. This was the second time asteroid samples have ever been collected and brought back to Earth. The first asteroid samples were collected by the original Hayabusa spacecraft back in 2010.
There will be more such missions in the near future. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, which collected samples from the asteroid Bennu in October, is expected to return to Earth in 2023. Russia’s Lunar-25 mission is scheduled to launch to the moon in 2021 to collect lunar samples.
“I cannot emphasize enough how valuable return samples are for increasing our understanding of the origin and evolution of our solar system and our place in the universe, and how we came to be,” said Ann Nguyen, a NASA planetary scientist.
Once the space samples are delivered to Earth, they are then analyzed with high-powered tools. These tools can help to reveal more detailed information than just photos or robotic rovers(机器人漫游车)alone. As for the Chang’e 5 lunar samples, scientists will conduct various analyses, tests and experiments to determine the composition(构成), structure and physical characteristics of the samples. This information will help to deepen our knowledge about the history of the moon, as well as our solar system as a whole.
We have only just begun to find out a small part of such celestial bodies. However, we have already learned so much and have a lot left to discover.
32. What do we know about the Chang’e 5 lunar probe?
A. It was launched on Dec 17.
B. It brought back 1,713 grams of lunar samples.
C. It landed after days of space travel.
D. It was the world’s second lunar sample-return mission since 1976.
33. Which of the following collected the first asteroid samples?
A. Hayabusa. B. Hayabusa 2. C. OSIRIS-REx. D. Russia’s Lunar-25.
34. Why are the returned samples valuable according to Ann Nguyen?
A. Because they have water.
B. Because they show the structure of the solar system.
C. Because they will increase our understanding of the origin of life.
D. Because they show how water first appeared on the moon.
35. What will scientists do with the samples?
A. Discover their surfaces. B. Determine their sources.
C. Compare them with space photos. D. Analyze them and conduct experiments.

How to Select a College
Second term of junior year can be a scary time. The college application process is approaching and your fears are becoming more realistic. You may not get into every college you apply to, which is why it’s important to have “safety schools” that are practically guaranteed to accept you. It is also important to have “reach schools” that are more difficult to get into but offer a greater education. 36 Then there is the “dream school” --- the one you would do almost anything to get into.
Here are my tips on selecting a college:
Do you have any idea where you want to go? Juniors should make a top-10 list that includes three safety, three reach, and four dream schools.
37 Sites like Princeton Review.com and College Board.com are very helpful in finding out what ACT or SAT score may be required to be accepted, as well as what sets a college apart from the others, and if it offers extra-curricular activities in which you are interested.
Apply and visit. After you have thoroughly researched your top 10 schools, narrow the list to five. These are the colleges to which you will most likely apply. Check deadlines, but applications should usually be sent by November. 38 If you are unable to visit, email the admissions office with any questions.
39 Your acceptance and sadly rejection letters will come in April. Now, this may sound easy, but it is necessary to list the advantages and disadvantages of all the schools where you are accepted. Examine every fact you know about the college. Whichever school has the highest pro to con ratio should be your pick.
Have fun in college! You likely made the right choice, but college life may be difficult so always remember to study hard, get plenty of sleep, and fasten your seatbelt --- 40
A. Choose wisely.
B. Find out the entrance requirements of these ten schools.
C. Set your goal high!
D. After you have applied, go a step further and visit each school if you haven’t already done so.
E. Everyone hopes to go to their dream college.
F. Never lose heart even though you fail to be admitted to a college!
G. It may be quite a rough ride.

Good morning, everyone! It’s my great honor to speak here. As we all know, food is of great importance for us. It provides our body with energy. Without food, we cannot survive on the earth. But in our daily life, too much food is wasted, which makes saving food more urgent.
Here are some suggestions on how to save food. First and foremost, we should always prepare/cook a proper amount of food and eat up everything on the plate. Besides, while dining out, we shouldn’t order too much food and we should take the leftovers home. Last but not least, we should help raise people’s awareness of saving food, which is an effective way to stop wasting food.
I firmly believe that it is high time we should spare no effort to save food and prevent wasting.
