Imagine your community as a material bank, rich with resources to reuse. How could you improve the built environment by upcycling waste, circulating (循环) existing materials, or regenerating nature? Your challenge is to design a structure that meets a need in your community now but could also be repurposed later.
“Designing for deconstruction” involves a modular approach in which building elements could be easily reconfigured, reimagined, and repurposed over time.

Professor Veena Sahajwalla, 2022 Australian of the year, has created a solution to our massive trash problem: waste microfactories. These little trash processors (处理器)—some as small as 500 square feet— house a series of machines that recycle waste and transform it into new materials with thermal technology. The new all-in -one approach could leave our current recycling processes in the dust.
In 2018 she launched the first microfactory, establishing a model of recycling that enables businesses and communities to develop commercial opportunities while addressing local waste problems. A second one began recycling plastics in 2019. Now, her lab group is working with university and industry partners to commercialize their patented Microfactory technology. “The small scale of the machines will make it easier for them to one day operate on renewable energy, unlike most large manufacturing plants. The approach will also allow cities to recycle waste into new products on location, avoiding the long, often international, high-emission journeys between recycling processors and manufacturing plants. With a microfactory, gone are the days of needing separate facilities to collect and store materials, extract (提取) elements and produce new products,” says Sahajwalla.
Traditionally, recycling plants break down materials for reuse in similar products-like melting down plastic to make more plastic things. Sahajwalla’s invention advances this idea by taking materials from an old product and creating something different. “The kids don’t look like the parents,” she says. Sahajwalla refers to this process as “the fourth R,” adding “re -form” to the common phrase “reduce, reuse, recycle”.
Professor Veena Sahajwalla’s programs help to develop innovation and promote cooperation with industry, ensuring that sustainable materials and processes become commercially practical solutions for dealing with waste.

Jahkil Jackson is the creator of the famous Project I Am. Through the project, Jahkil looks to raise awareness for reducing homelessness in Chicago and beyond.
Even at a very tender age, his deeds already drew the recognition of former U. S. President Barack Obama in 2017. Jahkil also pushes to motivate and influence fellow kids to get more active and useful in their communities. When he was five years old, Jahkil assisted his aunt in distributing food to the homeless in Chicago. Then the little boy was unhappy to find out that people could not afford a home. He was always eager to find out how he could offer help to people. And he would be mad for not being able to give money to anyone asking for help on the streets. He was determined to help the homeless in every way he could.
That strong desire later gave birth to the Project I Am, his nonprofit organization, which focused on helping the homeless people. He founded it at the age of eight, and has since then never looked back on his journey of charity.
Through Project I Am, Jahkil Jackson reaches out to the homeless by distributing “Blessing bags”. Provided in the blessing bags are diverse kinds of materials to help the needy, including wipes, hand sanitizers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, socks, bottled water, among other things.
Jahkil Jackson is also one of the key workers in Dream for Kids, another nonprofit organization founded by Tom Tuohy, a social entrepreneur. Jahkil met with Tuohy at a Holiday for Hope event organized by the Dream for Kids. From there, he became the youngest ever student in the YES (Youth Enterprise Solution) program by the Dream For Kids. He has been working with them since then.

The pandemic (疫情) has changed the shape of global happiness
Politicians and officials frequently talk about how COVID-19 affects public health and the economy. But for most people, those are abstract considerations. What they experience each day are moods. To mark World Happiness Day on March 20th, researchers have tried to find out these moods and examine the way the pandemic has changed them in the World Happiness Report.
Globally, between 2021 and 2022 happiness was boosted by 0.22 points on the Cantril ladder among people over the age of 60. Video-conferencing software enabled many old people to stay in touch with their families. In countries under lockdown, they experienced the pleasure of knowing that society made sacrifices to protect them.
Meanwhile the young had a rough year. Many lost their jobs — in America the unemployment rate for people aged 20 to 24 shot up from 6.3% in February to 25.6% two months later. In some rich countries young women had a particularly hard time. They often worked in sectors, such as hospitality (食宿娱乐), which were shut down. When schools closed, many were troubled with more than their fair share of child care.
The most interesting finding in the World Happiness Report is that some links between COVID-19 and happiness operate in both directions. The authors do not suggest that happiness helps countries resist COVID-19. Rather, they argue that what sustains national happiness also makes places better at dealing with the pandemic. Surveys by Gallup show that many of the places that have coped best with COVID-19, such as the Nordic countries and New Zealand, have widespread faith in institutions and strangers. Large majorities of their residents believe that a neighbour will return a wallet if they find it.

McMahon and Uemoto were thrown forward violently. McMahon opened his eyes to wait for death. He realized that he was, incredibly, OK. Uemoto was next to him, shocked and bleeding, but still conscious. She rose to her feet hard and felt the blood pouring down her face. “Get out!” McMahon shouted loudly. The water was knee-high inside the plane, and it would be flooded in moments.
Uemoto made every effort through the water toward the door, picking up two life preservers along the way. By the time she’d climbed out onto the wing, the water was covering the seats of the plane. As the plane sank, they jumped into the ocean. Within seconds, the plane disappeared from the surface.
The waves broke around them. McMahon and Uemoto had done the impossible by surviving a crash landing into the ocean. Uemoto, however, was frightened and started to cry. McMahon tried to calm her by making small talk.
“When will the rescuers get here?” Uemoto asked.
“They're coming,” McMahon said. “We're just going to be here.”
