A computer can easily beat a human at chess or even the quiz show Jeopardy. But questions that seem obvious trip them up. Read these two:1. The trophy would not fit in the suitcase because it was too big. What was too big?2. The father punished the son because he was so mad. Who was mad?Of course you know the answers. But how do you know so easily? And why might a computer or robot have trouble? That’s the interesting part. There’s a lot more to these sentences than meets the eye. For example, in question 1, the word “it” can refer to either the “trophy” or the “suitcase”. You know which one is too big only because you understand that something has to be smaller than a space to fit inside. You learned all of these facts (and many, many more) simply from being human and existing in the world. We call that type of knowledge common sense. Computers and robots don’t have it. They don’t know that rope can pull but not push, that rain makes you wet and so much more, unless we program them to know. Early computer scientists thought they could teach computers common sense by writing code to represent every single rule about how the world works. One project, Cyc, began in 1984 and now contains over 25 million such rules. Other computer scientists have tried to use deep learning, a type of artificial intelligence, to give machines common sense through practice. These efforts have had some success. But the rules of common sense are seemingly endless. And they often have exceptions. For example, it’s not always true that something has to be smaller than a space in order to fit. A large blown-up trophy could be deflated and folded to fit in a small suitcase. “It is still a big challenge in AI to get a machine that has the common sense of an 18-month-old baby”, says Melanie Mitchell, a computer scientist at the Santa Fe Institute.33. At the beginning of the passage, how does the writer lead in the topic?A. By giving examples. B. By telling a story. C. By showing a picture. D. By listing numbers.34. What may computers or robots fail to understand?A. The experimental data on chemistry.B. The numbers we write in the document.C. The order we make when we have dinner in the restaurant.D. The word “it” in “The cat ate the fish because it was hungry”.35. What can we conclude from the last two paragraphs?A. It may take a long time to teach machines more common sense.B. The machines are already as intelligent as an 18-month-old baby.C. The scientists have solved the problems of common sense successfully.D. It is easy for machines to understand the changes of rules of common sense.36. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A. What common sense do robots have? B. Why do some questions trouble robots?C. How do scientists teach robots common sense? D. What kind of questions can be difficult for robots?D
This is the story of two adventurous mountain climbers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, who managed to climb the West Face of Siula Grande. Several teams had tried before, but all failed. After reaching the top, Joe and Simon decided to go back down an extremely dangerous but faster route. Then something dramatic happened. Joe fell over, breaking his leg. They had no communication with the base camp, and there was no chance of outside help. As a snowstorm was forming around them, Simon tied two ropes together, tied them to himself and then around Joe, and started lowering him. Suddenly, the rope got stuck between two rocks and Joe was left hanging in mid-air over a huge crevasse(裂缝). Simon couldn’t talk to him or see him. He tried hopelessly for more than an hour to pull his friend up, but without success. The situation was obviously hopeless. Simon imagined both himself and his friend dying in the snow and ice. He didn’t want to leave his friend alone, but the more he thought about it, the more he began to understand that there was surely no way he could save both his own life and that of his friend. Finally, Simon had no choice but cut the rope and saved his own life. Joe fell away, right down to the bottom of the crevasse. The next day, when Simon continued down the mountain and passed the area where Joe had landed, he saw nothing, and supposed Joe was dead. But Joe wasn’t. He had survived the fall and managed to climb out of the crevasse. For the next three and a half days, he continued to go down the mountain, climbing and hopping on one leg under extremely difficult conditions. He even managed to cross a glacier(冰川) with no safety equipment(装备). When he finally got to their base camp, the climbers were amazed to see him, especially Simon. After the two men went back home, their story became famous. Simon was unfairly blamed(责备) for cutting the rope. In 1988, Joe wrote a book about the accident and defended(辩护) for his friend. He believed Simon made the right decision.37. What does the underlined word “dramatic” mean in paragraph two?A. Sudden. B. Magic. C. Attractive. D. Reasonable.38. Why did Simon decide to cut the rope?A. Joe asked Simon to cut the rope and save himself.B. Simon supposed Joe would get hurt but still be alive.C. Both Simon and Joe would die if he did not let go.D. Joe could still be safe with some safety equipment.39. Which words can best describe Joe?A. Warm-hearted and generous. B. Strong-willed and understanding.C. Open-minded and creative. D. Hard-working and responsible.40. What do you think of the friendship between Simon and Joe? Why?
