It just hadn’t been a very good week. On Tuesday, Sam’s father lost his job. Then on Wednesday, Sam’s mother announced that the rent (房租) on their apartment was going up. Now it was Friday, and Sam received an invitation from Rosa to her birthday party.
Sam knew Rosa from Adventure (冒险) Club. He knew he would enjoy Rosa’s party, but he didn’t want to go without a gift. What could he possibly buy her with the little bit of money he had? Sam knew he couldn’t ask Mom or Dad for any money—not this week!
Later that afternoon, Sam noticed a secondhand book sale going on. He went there and had a quick look. Two books caught his eye. The first was a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods, and the second was a book about women explorers (探险家). “Rosa would like these,” Sam thought, “but would it be tacky (蹩脚的) to give her secondhand books for her birthday?”
Sam decided that a secondhand gift was better than no gift at all. Besides, Rosa supported recycling in that way. So, she would probably like it. With his last dollar, Sam bought the books and went home. He felt a little better.
The party was on Saturday. Rosa opened all her gifts and thanked everyone for the nice things they had given her. She paused (停顿) when she opened Sam’s gift, which made him wonder if she liked the books, but nothing was said.
When Sam got home, he opened his email and found this note from Rosa.
Dear Sam,
Of all the gifts I received today, yours was the nicest. How did you know I would love a book about women explorers and a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods? Now I have something to read that will inspire me to follow my dream of becoming an adventurer, and I have a book that I can share with my grandmother. She is getting older and wants to be sure her granddaughter knows how to make the wonderful foods of Puerto Rico. Thank you so much.
Love,
Rosa

Classmates’ laughter, parents’ nagging (唠叨), beautiful music – we can hear all kinds of sounds every day. However, that wasn’t the case with Jiang Mengnan.
At just 6 months old, Jiang lost her hearing after relatives gave her the wrong medicine. To understand others, Jiang learned to read lips and feel vocalization (发声) by putting her hands on her parents’ throats and feeling the vibration (振动) of their vocal cords (声带) when she was a kid. It was a slow, difficult process, but Jiang never gave up. As she got older, Jiang entered a standard primary school to study, which was difficult at first. During lessons, teachers would often turn their backs to students and walk around, so Jiang failed to catch much of what they said. What she could do was copy down everything on the blackboard and study after class.
Her perseverance made her a top student. In 2011, she was admitted to Jilin University in Changchun, Jilin province. After graduating in 2018 with a master’s degree, Jiang furthered her studies in Tsinghua University. Now, the 30-year-old is going to receive her doctorate at the end of this year.
“I’ve received so much help from others over the years. The best way to repay them is for me to do something good for society,” she said. “Because of my hearing loss, I couldn’t be a doctor. Instead, I chose pharmacology (药物学) so I can help reduce people’s pain and hasten their recovery.”
More importantly, she is helping inspire disabled children in her native Hunan province. Beyond to strive for success, she is defying (反抗) the low expectations some in society still place on them. “I tell them to do their best to achieve as much as a so-called healthy person,” she said. “We don’t need to feel inferior because of our flaws (缺陷). Once they try, they’ll find things aren’t much more difficult than for other kids. And sometimes they’ll even do better.”
23. From the underlined sentence, we know Jiang became a top student because___________.
A. she was confident B. she was intelligent
C. she was hard-working D. she was kind-hearted

A. who was laughed at by her classmates
B. who easily learned to read lips to understand others

25. From the last paragraph, we can know that _______________.
A. Jiang has helped disabled children with their schoolwork
B. Jiang has encouraged disabled children to be confident
C. children with flaws do better than other kids
D. disabled children will fail to achieve their dreams
26. What’s the best title for this passage?
