People always have communication with each other. In the past when they couldn’t write, they used simple symbols to send their messages. Some groups of North American Indians were good at 1 messages. For example, a small stone on top of a large one meant “This is the way.” If there was another small stone on the right, it meant “Turn right.” Some grass with a knot meant “Danger!” and so on.
In forests of Africa, it was 2 to travel between villages. But drum could be heard from many kilometers away. So, some groups of Africans made their drums “ 3 ” like people.
The Incas of South America used to send messages by tying knots with ropes. Messages have been found, but 4 can understand what they mean. And the Egyptians used pictures as a kind of 5 , but only a few people were 6 to understand them.
Today, we also use a lot of symbols. When we are in a car and we see a red light, we stop the car. When a mother says to her child, “Eat your cake!” the child eats the cake. Sometimes the red light and the words of the mother are symbols. And the 7 , of course, is that the 8 way of communication between people is sound.
There are more than 3,000 languages in the world today. And about 13 of them are spoken by large groups of people. Languages of the world are both similar and different. They are similar because we can talk and write about the same things. They are different because we talk and write about these things with different 9 .
There is no 10 that we learn a second language in order to communicate with people who do not speak our language.

How often do you let other people's rude actions change your mood? Do you let a bad driver or an impolite waiter make your day in a mess? However, the mark of your wise reply to the actions is how ___1___ you can come back to smiling to them. Sixteen years ago, I learned this ____2____ at the back of a taxi in New York.
We were driving fast in the right lane (车道)when suddenly, a black car jumped ___3___ a parking space right to front of us. My taxi driver stepped on the brake(刹车)as hard as possible, and at the____4____moment our car stopped just one inch from the back of the other car.
I couldn't believe what happened next. The driver of the car turned his head around and started___5____bad words. But then here's what really____6____ me. My taxi driver just smiled and waved(挥手致意) at the guy. I said, "Why did you just do that? This guy nearly ___7___us!" He told me what I now remember "The Law of the Garbage(垃圾)Truck."
He said, “Like garbage trucks, many people run around full of garbage, full of anger, and full of regret. ___8___their garbage increases more and more, they look for a place to pour it. If you let them, they'll pour it on you. So when someone wants to pour it on you, don't feel hurt. Just smile, wave, and move on. You will be___9___.”
I started thinking: how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and___10___it to other people? Then I knew clearly what I should do.
I began to see Garbage Trucks. I see the bad mood people are carrying. I see them coming to pour it. And like my taxi driver, I don't feel hurt. I just smile, wave, and move on.

My students often say that they don’t have “enough time” to do all their schoolwork.
My 1 is often a short “You have as much time as the president.” I usually tell them about there being twenty-four hours in the day for everyone, and suggest that “not enough time” is not a 2 explanation (理由) of not getting something done.
Once in graduate school, I tried to prove to one of my professors by saying that I was working hard. His answer to me was, “That’s irrelevant(无关的). 3 is important is the 4 of your work.” Since then I have had time to think carefully about the “hard worker” dodge(诀窍), and I have come to some 5 — all connected with the problem of how much time we have.
If you study the matter, you can find two parts of the problem:There is, of course, the matter of time, which we can think of as 6 . Then there is the problem of “work” during that time. But, as my professor suggested, it’s not how hard one works 7 the quality of the product that’s important.
That led me to a new idea: the quality of the work. It is perhaps best explained by a sign I once saw on the wall in someone’s office: “Don’t work harder. 8 .” There is a lot of sense in that idea.
If you can’t get more time, and few of us can, the only way is to improve the quality of the work. That means thinking of ways to get more out of 9 time than we might get in another way. That should lead us to a study of our work habits. Since “work” for students usually means “homework”, the phrase “work habits” should be read as “ 10 habits”.
Then, as a smart student, you will try to improve those skills that you use in study, reading and writing. If you learn to read better and write better, there are big advantages that you can gain in all your studies.
