More than 25 years ago, Saroo Brierley lived in rural India. One day, he played with his brother along the rail line and fell asleep. When he woke up and found himself alone, the 5-year-old decided his brother might be on the train he saw in front of him—so he got on.
That train took him a thousand miles across the country to a totally strange city. He 1ived on the streets, and then in an orphanage(孤儿院). There, he was adopted by an Australian family and flown to Tasmania.
As he writes in his new book, A Long Way Home, Brierley couldn’t help but wonder about his hometown back in India. He remembered landmarks, but since he didn’t know his town’s name, finding a small neighborhood in a vast country proved to be impossible.
Then he found a digital mapping program---Google Earth. He spent years searching for his hometown in the program’s satellite pictures. In 2011, he came across something familiar. He studied it and realized he was looking at a town’s central business district from a bird’s-eye view. He thought, “On the right-hand side you should see the three-platform train station”—and there it was. “And on the left-hand side you should see a big fountain(喷泉)”—and there it was. Everything just started to match.
When he stood in front of the house where he grew up as a child, he saw a lady standing in the entrance. “There’s something about me,” he thought—and it took him a few seconds but he finally remembered what she used to look like.
In an interview Brierley says, “My mother looked so much shorter than I remembered. But she came forth and walked forward, and I walked forward, and my feelings and tears and the chemical in my brain, you know, it was like a nuclear fusion(核聚变). I just didn’t know what to say, because I never thought seeing my mother would ever come true. And here I am, standing in front of her.”

“Who made your T-shirt?” A Georgetown University student raised that question. Piertra Rivoli, a professor of business, wanted to find the answer. A few weeks later, she bought a T-shirt and began to follow its path from Texas cotton farms to Chinese factories to charity bin The result is an interesting new book, the Travels of a T-shirt in the Global Economy.
Following a T-shirt around the world in a way to make her point more interesting, but it also frees Rivoli from the usual arguments over global trade. She goes, wherever the T-shirt goes, and there are surprises around every corner, In China, Rivoli shows why a clothing factory, even with its poor conditions, means a step towards a better life for the people who work there. In the colorful used-clothing markets of Tanzania, she realizes that it is only in this final stage of life that the T-shirt will meet a real market, where the price of a shirt changes by the hour and is different by its size and even color. Rivoli’s book is full of memorable people and scenes, like the noise, the bad air and the muddy sweet smell (泥土香味) of the cotton. She says, “Here in the factory, Shanghai smells like Shallowater, Texas.”
Rivoli is at her best when making those sorts of unexpected connections. She even finds one between the free traders and those who are against globalization. The chances opened up by trade are huge, she argues, but free markets need the correcting force of politics to keep them in check. True economic progress needs them both.

B. How Shanghai Smells like Texas

Making beers on the moon might seem like a pipe dream to many, but for a group of students from the University of California at San Diego, there is a chance to take their research beyond Earth’s surface.
The Lab2 Moon competition, held by TeamIndus, is offering students the chance to secure a spot on the TeamIndus rocket this year.
Taking craft beer to the next level, the students want to test whether it is possible for yeast(酵母) to work and create beer on the moon. However, they believe the experiment is not just a creative concept for astronauts, it’s also important for the development of drugs and yeast-containing food, like bread.
“The idea started out with a few laughs among a group of friends,” said Neeki Ashari, a fifth-year bioengineering students at UC San Diego. “We all appreciate the craft beer. When we heard that there was an opportunity to design an experiment that would go up on India’s moonlander, we thought we could combine our hobby with the competition by focusing on the practicality of yeast in outer space.”
The preparation work for the beer — up to the stage of adding yeast — will all be done on Earth, and rather than separating the fermentation ( 发酵) and carbonation stage of making beer, the team plans to combine them.
This removes the need to release CO2 accumulated in the process, which may result in cleanliness and safety issues out in space.
If selected, Team Original Gravity will be the first to make beer in outer space, and the fermentation will take place in a container no bigger than a soda can.
All teams competing for the place will showcase their ideas in Bangalore, India, in March.
Sadly, you won’t be enjoying moon beer in your local craft beer bar anytime soon, as no samples will be brought back. However, this small experiment could provide important data on just how practical it is for us to make and create our own resources on other planets and moons by learning how consumables (消耗品) behave in different environments.
32. How did the students feel when they got the chance to design the experiment?
A. Excited. B. Nervous.
C. Confident. D. Casual.
33. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A. The mixing of two stages. B. Adding yeast on Earth.
C. The preparation work on Earth. D. Fermentation and carbonation.
34. What can we learn about the experiment from the passage?
A. It has been designed based on similar experiments.
B. It’s quite competitive compared with other designs.
C. Its design has already been approved by TeamIndus.
D. Its process was adapted to make it safer and greener.
35. What does the author think of the students’ idea?
A. It seems like a pipe dream. B. It’s extremely complicated.
C. It’s meaningful and hopeful. D. It’s creative but impractical.

Four Efficient Ways to Improve Your Speech
One psychologist feels that our facial expression is responsible more than anything else for the impression others have of us. 36 People tend to mirror your expression, so try to show how you feel about a topic or an idea or the audience through your facial expression.
37 The way to handle it is to put it to work for you, get into action. As Shakespeare observed, action cures fear. There are only a few known ways to control fear. If you’re thoroughly prepared, apart from admitting it, taking deep breaths can add your confidence and calm. Other known ways to control nervousness and fear are to give yourself a pep talk or take some physical exercise, simple calisthenics(健美操)can work wonders in you. 38
Our voice is the main instrument we own for communicating with people, we’re all sound sensitive. 39 I’ve done the same thing and I can promise you that even if you use candies instead of stones you can quickly develop excellent pronunciation. Do believe that a kind of practice will help improve your emphasis, pausing and other qualities of your voice.
Psychologists tell us that most individuals don’t use above ten percent of their inherent capacity for memory. Because they don’t practice the fundamentals of remembering. It’s difficult to recall anything without wanting to have a burning desire to remember. Moreover, our success depends greatly on our ability to concentrate. The next principle is repetition. Next time you intend to keep things in mind in school, try to repeat them over and over again. 40 .
A. Fear and nervousness definitely do harm to your health.
B. The more associations you make, the easier it’ll be to recall.
C. It’s natural to have some tension or nervousness when you appear before an audience.
D. A good voice can be polished through frequent practice.
E. And as a final approach to fear —prepare, then act with confidence.
F. Remember that Winston Churchill used stones in his mouth while practicing his speaking.
G. Actually, over 50 percent of another’s impression is influenced by the look on your face.

A few years ago I worked in an international company that sold computer devices. I had to travel a lot over the country as a part of my work. I remember that I was at a stage of my life where I only cared about how to make more money.
On one of my trips, I came to the airport to take a bus to downtown, as usual. It was the same routine: get into the city, take the bus to the hotel, visit the customer, work late, take the bus back to the airport and fly back ...That day, for some reasons, I decided to take the stairs down to a different exit, where I came across a beautiful garden I had never seen before. I waited there, enjoying the scenery. Finally the bus came.
Usually I always took the seat behind the driver. That day I sat down somewhere in the middle. A boy was seated next to me, carrying a lot of suitcases. Suddenly, he turned to me and gave me one of the most sincere smiles I had ever seen from a stranger. Warmly, he said, “hi, the perfect day in the perfect place, huh?”
I remember thinking to myself — this must be one of those typical people who is young and naive and just thinks everything is beautiful and easy. Why was he annoying me when I just wanted to enjoy the bus ride? But out of politeness, I replied, “Perfect! Did your parents pay for you to have some vacations on the beach?” “No, I’m not here for vacation, and I don’t have parents,” He shook his head, “I’m here because I want to achieve my biggest dream. I’m on the way to the army school where my grandfather studied a long time ago.”

The preparation work for the beer — up to the stage of adding yeast — will all be done on Earth, and rather than separating the fermentation ( 发酵) and carbonation stage of making beer, the team plans to combine them.
This removes the need to release CO2 accumulated in the process, which may result in cleanliness and safety issues out in space.(这消除了释放过程中积累的二氧化碳的需要,这可能会导致清洁和安全问题。)
However, this small experiment could provide important data on just how practical it is for us to make and create our own resources on other planets and moons by learning how consumables (消耗品) behave in different environments.(然而,通过了解消耗品在不同环境中的行为,这个小实验可以为我们提供重要的数据,告诉我们在其他行星和卫星上制造和创造我们自己的资源有多实际。)
36. 根据前文“One psychologist feels that our facial expression is responsible more than anything else for the impression others have of us. ”(一位心理学家认为,我们的面部表情对别人对我们的印象负有最大的责任。),所以空白处要用具体信息来描述面部表情带来的影响。选项G.“Actually, over 50 percent of another’s impression is influenced by the look on your face”(别人对你的印象有50%以上是受到你脸上表情的影响)符合题意,故选G。
37.根据后文“The way to handle it is to put it to work for you, get into action, as Shakespeare observed, action cures fear.”(处理它的方法就是让它为你服务,付诸行动,就像莎士比亚说的,行动可以治愈恐惧。) C.“It’s natural to have some tension or nervousness when you appear before an audience”(当你出现在观众面前时,有些紧张或紧张是很自然的。)
38.根据前文“There are only a few known ways to control fear. ”(只有几种方法可以控制恐惧。)结合下文提到的应对恐惧的办法,所以空白处应该同样讲述的为应对恐惧的办法。选项E.“And as a final approach to fear —prepare, then act with confidence”(最后一个方法是,做好准备,然后自信地采取行动。)
39. 根据前文“Our voice is the main instrument we own for communicating with people, we’re all sound sensitive.”(我们的声音是我们与人交流的主要工具,我们都对声音很敏感。) 后文“I’ve done the same thing and I can promise you that even if you use candies instead of stones you can quickly develop excellent pronunciation. ”(我也做过同样的事情,我可以向你保证,即使你用糖果代替石头,你也可以很快培养出完美的发音。)此处讲到了作者自己用糖果代替石头来锻炼声音,可以推知,空白处应提到用石头来训练的事实。选项F.“Remember that Winston Churchill used stones in his mouth while practising his speaking”(记住那个温斯顿•丘吉尔在练习说话的时候用石头塞在嘴里。)
40.根据前文“Next time you intend to keep things in mind in school, try to repeat them over and over again.”(下次你打算在学校记住一些事情的时候,试着一遍又一遍地重复它们。) B.“The more associations you make, the easier it’ll be to recall”((通过重复)你建立的联系的越多,就越容易回忆起来。)

Dear schoolmates, I feel honored to be here to talk about hygiene practices representing Students’ Union. Over the past few months, the epidemic situation has had a strong impact on our life. Faced with the disaster, we should respond actively to the appeal from the government and experts.
First of all, pay more attention to personal hygiene practices. Do wear masks in public places. Besides, wash hands as often as possible, which can reduce the risk of being infected with viruses. Most importantly, keep a balanced diet and exercise regularly.

Text 10
A new 2,400-square-meter museum is set to open on New York State’s Liberty Island next year. The museum celebrates the world-famous Statue of Liberty. The statue was a gift from the people of France to the United States. It officially opened to the public in October 1886. From 1892 to 1954, more than 12 million immigrants passed by the Statue of Liberty as their ships sailed to nearby Ellis Island. Many immigrants later traveled to Liberty Island and saw the statue up close. Now, a new museum to honor “Lady Liberty” is on the way.
About 4.5 million tourists visit Liberty Island every year. But only about 20 percent are able to go inside the Statue of Liberty because of limited space. The new museum will permit every visitor to know what the inside is like. The museum is expected to open in May 2019. Entering the building, visitors will experience a virtual look inside the head of Lady Liberty. They also have a chance to see a recreation of the work place of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, who created the statue. Museum visitors also will see the 1,600-kilogram torch that lit up New York Harhor for nearly 100 years. On top of the Statue of Liberty Museum, visitors can have a good look at New York’s Lower Manhattan area.
