She als knew frm previus wrk cnducted n birds and dlphins that these animals put half f their brains t sleep at a time s that they can rest while remaining watchful enugh t avid predatrs. This led her t wnder if peple might be ding the same thing.
T take a clser lk, her team studied 35 healthy peple as they slept in the unfamiliar envirnment f the university's Department f Psychlgical Sciences. The participants each slept in the department fr tw nights and were carefully mnitred with techniques that lked at the activity f their brains. Dr. Sasaki fund, as expected, the participants slept less well n their first night than they did n their secnd, taking mre than twice as lng t fall asleep and sleeping less verall. During deep sleep, the participants' brains behaved in a similar manner seen in birds and dlphins. On the first night nly, the left hemispheres f their brains did nt sleep nearly as deeply as their right hemispheres did.
Curius if the left hemispheres were indeed remaining awake t prcess infrmatin detected in the surrunding envirnment, Dr. Sasaki re-ran the experiment while presenting the sleeping participants with a mix f regularly timed beeps f the same tne and irregular beeps f a different tne during the night. She wrked ut that, if the left hemisphere was staying watchful t keep guard in a strange envirnment, then it wuld react t the irregular beeps by stirring peple frm sleep and wuld ignre the regularly timed nes. The wrld’s cral reefs are in bad shape. Climate change has led t cral whitening. Overfishing has disturbed the ecsystems that keep reefs healthy. Pisnus runffs frm human industry are destrying the “rainfrests f the sea.” A new study has highlighted anther threat t cral reefs:plastics.
Researchers analyzed crals frm reefs in Sutheast Asia and Australia. Almst everywhere they lked, they saw bits f plastic, including chip wrappers, Q-tips, garbage bags.
The team estimates that at least 11 billin plastic items are trapped in cral reefs in the Asia-Pacific and that number is increasing alarmingly. This culd spell disaster fr the wrld’s reefs. The likelihd f the crals develping a disease jumps frm 4 t 89 percent when crals cme int cntact with plastics.
Further investigatins are needed t determine precisely hw and why plastics make cral pen t different diseases. But it seems that plastic debris(碎片)slices pen the skin f the crals, expsing them t bacteria.
“Plastic debris can cause damage t cral tissues by accelerating invasin f bacteria r by exhausting resurces fr immune system functin during wund-healing prcesses,” the authrs f the study write. Drew Harvell, c-authr f the study, says that plastics als “shade the light cral needs and cut ff water flw.”
It is vital t preserve the health f cral reefs fr a number f reasns. Many marine creatures make their hmes within the reefs. Reefs als prtect castlines frm waves and trpical strms, supprt fishing industries and generate billins f dllars fr the wrldwide turism industry every year.
Thrughut the research, scientists nticed that the plastics prblem was nt evenly distributed. Reefs near Indnesia had the highest amunt f plastic rubbish, while reefs near Australia had the lwest. This culd be because Australia has the best waste remval system. It suggests that there is a relatively easy fix t the issue.
“We can clean up the prblem,” Harvell tld Fears. “It’s s much easier than climate change.”
12.What des the underlined part in the first paragraph refer t?
