    Test 11(2020·辽宁营口·高三模拟预测)
Some researchers think there might be a connection between UFOs and angel sightings. They say the angels and heavenly figures might actually have been extraterrestrials(外星人)。
After his experience in the 1980s with "the most beautiful thing" he ever saw, Lewis might agree with that assessment.
It was a Saturday morning in Mariposa, California, and Lewis had to work that day. The air was fresh from a cool rain the night before, and the morning sky was bright with a few scattered clouds.
"I was heading out to my car in the back parking lot of the apartment complex where I lived when I noticed someone kneeling next to my car," Lewis says. "This person saw me and quickly stood up holding a crowbar(撬棍),"
The young man was quite obviously astonished by Lewis's interruption, and although Lewis sensed the boy was up to no good, it hadn't yet hit him what he was doing. Then Lewis looked through the passenger window of his car and saw that the steering wheel column had been stripped(脱去)of its cover. He realized that the young man was trying to steal his car.
"I asked him what he was doing," Lewis recalls, "He gave me a lame story about his friend's car being stolen last night and that my car looked like his friend's and so on. I didn't want to hear it. I told him I was going to call the police, which I did on my cell phone."
Lewis dialed 911 and gave the dispatcher(调度员)the address. He told the would-be thief that the police were on their way and warned him not to leave. "If he did, I wasn't going to try to stop him because he had that crowbar," Lewis says.
As Lewis was questioning the young man, trying to detain(扣留)him, he began to notice three rather large clouds in a single-file formation that were almost overhead.
"Then I saw it," he says."A shiny object exited from the first cloud and entered the next and then came out of that one. It was shiny, like brightly polished objects, moving at a good speed. I couldn't make out the shape."

    【答案】One possible version:
By this time, Lewis was so distracted by the UFO. That's when the object entered the last cloud. From there it was nothing but open sky. "When it appeared, my life changed," Lewis says. "There against the richness of the blue sky was a silvery shape that seemed to have arms and legs! It was so beautiful to look at. At the same time,it had the appearance of metal. It looked like some kind of ship with a strange design. The best way I could describe it is that it looked like a silver tool in the design of the stickman children draw. It was huge, moving fast and made no noise.
"As it sailed overhead, some of the arms and legs would move up and down, giving the impression of being alive!" He says. " It made a couple of rolls, reflecting the sun in every direction-just beautiful! Slowly it landed on the land. I imagined extraterrestrials would come out, but that didn't happen. Then it began to rise and move farther and farther away. As it started to fade away from my view, I found myself short of breath and with tears running down my cheeks. It had that much of an effect on me. I began thinking maybe that's what an angel looks like."

    Test 12(2021·涟水县第一中学高三月考)
The story began on a downtown Brooklyn street corner. An elderly man had fallen down while crossing the street, and an ambulance rushed him to the nearest hospital. The old man repeatedly called for his son.
From a worn letter located in his pocket, anemergency-room (急救室) nurse learned that his son was a sailor stationed in North Carolina Camp. Obviously there were no other relatives.
Someone at the hospital called the Red Cross office in Brooklyn, and a request for the son to rush to Brooklyn was sent. Because time was short—the patient was dying, so they found the young man and rushed him to the airport in time to catch the only plane that might enable him to reach his dying father.
It was dusk when the nurse took the tired, anxious sailor to the bedside. “Your son is here,” she said to the old man. She had to repeat the words several times before the patient’s eyes opened. The medicine he had been given because of the pain from his heart attack made his eyes weak and only saw the young man in uniform (制服) standing outside the oxygen tent. He extended his hand. The sailor wrapped his strong fingers around the old man’s, releasing a message of love and encouragement. The nurse brought him a chair, so the sailor could sit by the bed.
Nights are long in hospitals, but all through the night the young sailor sat there, holding the old man’s hand and offering words of hope and strength. It was nearly dawn when the patient died. The sailor placed his lifeless hand he had been holding on the bed, and went to inform the nurse.
“Who was the man?” the sailor asked.
“He was your father.” the nurse answered surprisingly.
“No, he wasn’t,” the sailor replied. “ I’ve never seen him before in my life.”
    Paragraph 1:
“Why didn’t you say something when I took you to him?”________________________________
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Paragraph 2:
Two days later a message came in that there had been two sailors with the same name and similar number in the Camp.__________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】“Why didn’t you say something when I took you to him?” she asked.“As a matter of fact, I knew immediately there must have been a mistake, but I also knew the old man needed his son right then. However, it was a pity that his son just wasn’t here. When I realized he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son, I guessed he really needed me at that moment. So I stayed and accompanied him as if I were his son,” the sailor replied, smiling sincerely.
Two days later a message came in that there had been two sailors with the same name. And they had the similar number in North Carolina Camp. Someone in the personnel office had pulled out the wrong record, taking this sailor as the old man’s son by mistake. But the wrong sailor had become the right son at the right time. He willingly kept the old man’s company all through the night in the hospital. And he proved, in a very human way, that there are people who care what happens to their fellow men.

    Test 13(2021·湖北高三月考)
Holiday was in the air long before Christmas came in Brooklyn. The first sure sign of it was the Christmas trees arriving in Francy's part of Brooklyn. Tree sellers tied ropes along the street. They put the trees against the ropes. The air all around smelled of the green branches.
A few people stopped by to choose a tree. They would ask the seller to keep it for them until the day before Christmas. Then they would take their tree home and cover it with colorful papers, lights and gifts. Many people stopped to ask the prices of trees. But most people just come to look at the trees or touch them.
There was a custom in Francy's part of Brooklyn for the children who really wanted their Christmas trees but their parents could not afford them: Before midnight on Christmas Eve, sellers would throw some of the unsold trees at children who wanted therm. If they caught them without falling down, they could keep them. But if they fell down, they gave up their chances for free trees. The men would throw each tree in turn starting with the biggest one. Many children would try to catch the trees. But only the strongest and roughest boys would try to catch the big trees. The little ones usually waited for the little trees
On this Christmas Eve, Francy was 10 years old sand her little brother Nily was nine. Their mother agreed to let them have their first try to win a free tree.
They had chosen their tree earlier in the day. They had stood near it all afternoon, hoping that no one would buy it. To their great happiness, the tree was still there at midnight. It was the biggest tree. The tree's price was so high. No one could buy it. Francy told her brother if she could only have the tree, she would never ask Santa Clause for another thing as long as she lived.

    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Midnight finally arrived and the tree man took out the biggest tree. Before Francy could speak, a big rough boy, 18 years old, stepped forward. He looked around and asked "Anybody else wants to take a chance on it?" Francy stepped forward, "Me, Mister." The tree man laughed and said, "You are too little." Francy argued, "Me and my brother will not be too little together." She pulled Nily forward.
The tree man looked at the two kids and hesitated for a moment. The two children,a thin girl of 10 who looked as if she did not get enough to eat, a thin little boy with light hair and round blue eyes, stood there. He thought "why don't I just give them the tree, say merry Christmas, and let them go. " The children watched the tree man as he stood there in his moment of thought. Finally, the tree man made his decision and gave the tree to Francy and her little brother. Some of the boys shouted "Great." Some people clapped their hand.

    Test 14(2021·浙江嘉兴·高三月考)
His father said, “All set, boy?” and Jeremy nodded, picking up his gun with awkward gloved hands. His father pushed open the door and they went out into the freezing dawn together. Ordinarily Jeremy would take out his camera to record the scenery, but not this morning. This was the morning, particularly sacred, when 14-year-old Jeremy would go duck hunting for the first time.
However, he hated it, and had hated the whole idea since his father bought him a gun. But he was determined to go through with it. He loved his father, and wanted his approval more than anything in the world.
They came to a narrow and hidden place facing the bay. Jeremy sat down nervously and waited. To reduce fear, he took a picture of his father against the clean water. Then he put the camera hurriedly on the grass and picked up his gun.
Jeremy got his gun ready. “I'll let you shoot first,” his father said, loading his own gun. “You know, I've been waiting for a long time for this day. Just the two of us..."He broke off, bending forward, eyes narrowed. “There's a small flight heading this way now. Keep your head down. I'll give you the word.”
The sun came out. Jeremy could see everything clearly: his father's face, tense and eager; the white frost on the gun. His heart was beating wildly. He prayed, “Don't let them come, please!”
But they kept coming. "Four black,” his father said. “One mallard (绿头鸭).” High above, Jeremy heard the pulsing whistle of wings as the flight began to circle. The mallard was leading, his feet dropping down, reaching for the silver-colored water. Closer, closer... “Get set,” his father whispered.
“Now!” cried Jeremy's father. “Take them!”
Jeremy felt his body obey. He stood up, holding the gun. In the same instant, the wild ducks saw the gunners and flew. “Shoot!” said something sharply in Jeremy's brain. But up went the mallard higher still, until suddenly he caught the full force of the wind and flew away, out of range.

    Paragraph 1:
His father asked in a controlled voice, “Why didn't you shoot?” “Because they were so alive”,Jeremy explained, with his lips shaking. He sat on the grass, buried his face in his hands and burst into tears. All hope of pleasing his father was gone. For a long moment, his father was silent. Then Jeremy felt him kneel down beside him and pat him on the shoulder gently. Suddenly, his father shouted,” Get ready!” Feeling cold metal touching his hand, Jeremy looked up.
    Paragraph 2:
To Jeremy's surprise, his father was handing the camera to him. “Here comes another duck .” A beautiful wild duck flew closer, its white breast shining in the sunshine. Jeremy held up his camera immediately.” I got him!” A broad smile lit up his face. His father gave him a thumbs-up. Jeremy discovered there was no disappointment in his eyes, only pride and love.” it's okay, son. I love shooting, but that doesn't mean you have to.” He paused and said,” Could you teach me how to use that camera?”

    Test 15(2021·山东广饶一中高三月考)
It was on a Christmas Eve when I was five years old that my dad upon arriving home from work, informed my mom and me that he would be working the next day, Christmas Day.
My dad, who was the manager of his work station, calmly explained that although he was not scheduled to work, he volunteered to do so.
My mom was visibly upset. “Ren, you work on Christmas day every year. Man, you are not making any Christmas memories with these kids. ”The rest of the evening we were discouraged. My mom and I were both very upset with Daddy.
I awoke on Christmas morning to the sounds of Christmas songs on our huge radio that was stationed in the living room. Mom and Dad were joking about something or the other there. She had apparently forgiven him sometime over the course of the night.
It was Christmas Day! I ran straight for the living room to wish my mom, dad and brother the merriest Christmas ever! After we all greeted each other, we began our usual Christmas morning ritual (仪式): Dad read the Christmas story. After the Christmas story, it was time to dig into the presents under the tree. It was the pink kitchen set, complete with tiny plastic pots, pans, plates, cups and a whole stove in it. It was exactly what I wanted and I was thrilled.
    After breakfast, my dad departed.
My mom started on Christmas Dinner. I wanted to help her but I was too distracted (注意力分散的) cooking my own imaginary meal on my new kitchen set. But soon I was bored with that and I joined my mother in the kitchen. “Mom, why does Daddy never get a turn to get a holiday on Christmas?” I asked. However, my mom did not give me a satisfactory answer.

    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I decided to ask Dad why he chose not to celebrate with us every year._______________________
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 The rest of the day flew slowly without Dad. During lunch when we carved the turkey, Dad wasn’t here; at night when my aunts and cousins stopped by, he wasn’t here; when we were enjoying the laughter, he completely missed it. Christmas Day came and gone and I felt pitiful for my dad. For me, volunteering to work on Christmas every year equalled that I preferred to go to school rather than take Christmas vacation. I was puzzled about Dad’s choice.
I decided to ask Dad why he chose not to celebrate with us every year. Hardly had my dad arrived home the next day when I couldnt wait to ask. Daddy’s response impressed me a lot. Christmas is a happy time with great memories filled with love and family. The other employees all wanted the day off. It was he, the manager of the station that should bear the responsibility. Only if he led the role could more people spend a happier Christmas. Dad's selflessness quality has a lasting effect on me.

    Test 16(2021·江苏如皋·高三月考)
In 1995 I broke my left foot on a bike ride. Luckily, I could still drive, so I continued my life with crutches (拐杖). One Sunday I drove to a picnic in a forest preserve an hour from my home, in my comfortable, but uncertain, white car.
The picnic was great, with good food, good friends and good weather. Late in the afternoon I left the party and began my drive home. I took the scenic route through West Chicago, a small town about 25 miles west of Chicago proper. Everything closed down on Sunday there, so it was hard to find someone driving on the road.
As I started up a bridge my car started to move with a short sudden action. The problem was that my car's alternator (交流发电机) went wrong, resulting in the car's battery dying. I thought, not now, not here! Finally, the car died. I rolled backwards onto a safer place, and pulled the emergency brake (紧急制动). Of course it was starting to get dark. I had to go out to walk, but where would I go? And on crutches? How long before a car would come by, and would they be kind enough to stop help? It would be very expensive to get my car to the auto mechanic shop (汽车修理店) of my hometown. Could I go home safely?
Then I saw a house right there at the bottom of the bridge, with a family outside having a picnic with their friends! Some of them were looking in my direction; some women were clearing away the completed picnic meal. I had great trouble walking with crutches, so I got out, leaned on the car and waved one crutch over my head. Their response was immediate. Three people ran up to the car to see what I needed. I told them my story and they took action at once.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】To my great pleasure, the family owned a car repair shop. Fortunately, their repair shop was not far from here. One of them went back to get tools and helped me repair my car. They changed the battery and restarted the car. My worries completely disappeared. I was so grateful that I hoped to give them some reward. But they said to me, “It’s our pleasure to help people in trouble out of trouble.” They were really my timely help! Because it was late and they saw that it was not easy for me to move, they were very willing to continue to help me and take me home.
Unbelievable luck again, I had a ride to my home. I felt very happy to be taken care of, especially in this difficult time. My heart was full of gratitude and incomparable warmth. In the car we talked happily all the way. I thought it was these warm-hearted people who had made me not have to go hungry and spend this cold night in the wild. I must pass on this kind of love for helping others. Let the world be full of love forever.

    Test 17(2021·广东高三月考)
One spring morning many years ago, I had been searching for gold along Coho Creek on southeastern Alaska's Kupreanof Island, and as I appeared from a forest, I froze in my tracks. No more than 20 paces away in the bog (沼泽) was a huge Alaskan wolf—caught in one trap.
From her appearance, I guessed that she had been trapped only a few days. I suspected that if I tried to release the mother wolf, she would turn aggressive and try to tear me to pieces.
What's next? I wondered. The mother wolf was clearly suffering. Yet each time I moved in her direction, she let out a howl. I thought I had to find her something to eat.
I hiked toward Coho Creek and spotted the leg of a dead deer. I whispered gently, “OK, Mother, your dinner is served, but only if you stop growling at me. Come on, now. Easy.” She sniffed them, then gobbled them up.
Over the next few days, I divided my time between searching and trying to win the mother wolf's trust. I talked gently with her, threw her more meat. Little by little, I kept edging closer—though I was careful to remain beyond the length of her chain. The big animal never took her dark eyes off me. “Come on, Mother,” I pleaded. “You want to go back to your friends on the mountain. Relax.”
On the fifth day, I delivered her daily meat. “Here's dinner,” I said softly as I approached. I slowly placed my hand on the mother wolf's injured leg. I applied pressure. The trap was open, and the mother wolf pulled free.
My experience in nature suggested that the mother wolf would now disappear into the woods. But cautiously, she walked toward me. Slowly, she sniffed my hands and arms. Yet, strangely, it all seemed so natural.
After a while, the mother wolf was ready to go into the forest. Then she turned back to me. At the same time, the mother wolf sent a long howl into the air. Then she disappeared.
Four years later, after serving in World War II, I returned to Coho Creek. There, standing, I gave out a long, low wolf call—something I had done many times before.

    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】Paragraph 1:
An echo(回声)came back across the distance. Again I called. This time followed by a wolf call from about a half-mile away. Then, far off,I saw a dark shape moving slowly in my direction. As it approached to me, I could see it was the wolf. An unusual feeling spread through my whole body. I knew at once that familiar shape, even after four years. “Hello, old girl,” I called gently. The wolf got closer, and stopped a few yards off, her tail swayed slightly.
    Paragraph 2:
Moments later, the wolf was gone. I left Kupreanof Island a short time after that, and I never saw the animal again. But the memory she left with me—vivid—will always be there, a reminder that there are things in nature that exist outside the laws and understanding of man. We can only accept them and—because they’re with an air of mystery and strangeness—perhaps treasure them all the time. I feel lucky to have an animal friend.

    Test 18(2021·江苏常熟·高三月考)
Niesha could not forget the way she had frozen in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations. Today had been Niesha’s turn. However, her hands had shaken so badly that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice had become softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts had kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up. on yourself.” Mr. Roberts had hesitated, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage?” Niesha had nodded, grateful for the chance. She had gone as quickly as she could to her next class. She had kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Momma was baking. Momma studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha?”
Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class?” Momma asked. She set the timer and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first- not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”

    Paragraph 2:
The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation._________
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】Paragraph 1:
Hearing Momma’s words, Niesha gazed at the precious blue ribbon, lost in thought. She imagined the scene where her momma tried her best to overcome her fears and pluck up her courage to deliver a fantastic speech to the audience. Perceiving Neisha’s anxiety, Momma reassured her and reached out her hand to tie the blue ribbon onto Niesha’s wrist with a disarming smile. Restored and determined, she gritted her teeth to find her courage. In front of the mirror parked Neisha continuously practicing from pronunciation to tone, even gesture. “Try harder,” she perked herself up when drowsiness fell upon her.
    Paragraph 2:
The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. Shy, she customarily lowered her head and averted her gaze, numb there for seconds. Shortly afterwards, courage found its way back the moment she caught sight of the blue ribbon. Comforted and inspired, she took a deep breath, summoned up her courage, “Dear fellow students, ...” Niesha cast a glance at Mr. Roberts standing in the corner smiling at her. A self-reassuring smile spread across Niesha’s face. She knew for sure that she had found her courage, in the mill and in the adversity.

    Test 19(2021·山东潍坊·高三月考)
Twenty years ago, Chase Poust was only 7. On Sunday morning just before the Memorial Day, he, his dad Steven, and his 4-year-old sister, Abigail, were out for a family boating trip on Florida's St. Johns River, which was trackless and almost nobody knew about it. And there's no rescue center nearby. Chase and Abigail were swimming at the back of the anchored boat while Steven was on deck (甲板) fishing.
It was a perfect outing- it was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the deep blue sky, the light green river water and the mild late May sunshine mixed to create a magic scene. Everything was sound until a strong current emerged and loosened Abigail's grasp and she let go of the boat. Instantly realizing his sister would be swept away, Chase let go of the boat as well to try and reach her. At the same time, Chase screamed at his father desperately.
Without thinking twice, Steven jumped into the water and swam towards the two kids with all his efforts. But after realizing he couldn't keep up with both kids, he was faced with a heartbroken decision. He told them he loved them very much because he wasn't sure what's going to happen. Steven tried his best to stick with both of his children. He wore himself out. But his little daughter was washed away from him. Directing Chase to swim to shore for help Steven stayed behind, keeping as close as he could to Abigail as the life-vest that was keeping her above the waves floated further and further from his reach.
It was a tough go for the 7-year-old, but rather than attempting to swim all out, Chase wisely paced himself. Stopping to float or dog paddle when he was tired, he'd rest and then set off again. The current was going the opposite way of going to the boat and the shore, so it was very hard to swim that way for Chase.

【答案】An hour later, Chase swam to the shore, anyhow. Exhausted and tired, he managed to find a man who was willing to help him. The man took him to the nearest rescue center where Chase told the story clearly. The rescue workers took action and headed for the location without hesitation. At the same time, Chase was taken well care of, left in the rescue center.
Luckily, Steven and Abigail were found and rescued. Steven could hardly believe that they were still alive. When he saw them coming from afar, he was excited to burst into tears. Steven and Abigail were also taken to the center , where they hugged each other, crying. Steven said “I am grateful to the men and proud of my son .Young as Chase is ,he is a brave man.”This frightening experience left a deep impression on them, which made them realize that they shoud cherish the moment which they spent.

    Test 20(2021·江苏扬州·高三月考)
The New York City sun was shining and no amount of air conditioning could help ease the discomfort from the burning heat. The numerous buildings rose tall above the tree lines in Central Park, seeing over the busy streets filled with crowds of workers dressed in gray and black suits, rushing to be on time for work.
Peter, an officer, walked out of his company to get brunch and buy groceries as he always did. He was a young man, dressed in a loose, white T-shirt and basketball shorts. He was wandering about the streets, easing his way through the crowd, listening to his favorite songs through his earphones.
Upon his usual route to his favorite restaurant, his joyful pace came to a stop when he felt a faint smell of smoke carried by the warm wind. He took out his earphones and looked around to see if anyone else was alarmed by the stench (恶臭). The crowd began to slow down as more people stopped at this smell. Fire trucks raced by with their alarms and Peter, along with the people around him, started to become worried. Then he saw thick, black smoke starting to cloud the blue skies. In curiosity, Peter headed in the direction of the smoke to find its source.
His heart was racing as the awful smell of the smoke strengthened. When the clouds of smoke were finally directly above him, Peter saw a huge building in flames, starting to fall down to ashes. When he finally emerged in the front, the big red flames were licking (舔) the sides of the walls and columns of fire shot through the roof.
When he finally was able to shake himself out of a state of shock, he saw a sign that said “Moving Company”. He remembered that morning his brother, Ryann told him and their mother their company was scheduled to deliver a shipment that day. And Ryann was in the building!
“I cannot leave Ryann alone in the building,” thought Peter._______________________________
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
It was his brother who was calling his name!___________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】 “I cannot leave Ryann alone in the building,” thought Peter. He was so worried about his brother that he wanted to rush into the building. However, when Peter came close to the building, a fireman who was putting out the fire stopped him and said to Peter, “What are you doing, sir? It’s too dangerous. Please stay away from the building.” Pete answered anxiously, “My brother is in the building and I have to go there to rescue him from the burning building.” Meanwhile, he still wanted to dash into the building. The fireman held Peter’s arm strongly in case he went there. Peter was crying loudly so that many people were staring at him when he heard someone was calling his name.
It was his brother who was calling his name! His brother was behind him in the crowd. He couldn’t believe his eyes and he said to the fireman,”Look, may brother is still alive. He isn’t in the building.” At the same time, he struggled to free himself from the fireman and ran quickly to his brother. “Are you hurt?” he asked his brother very excitedly and looked at the whole body of his brother. “No, I’m fine. We ran out of the building as soon as it started burning. Everyone is all right.” his brother replied.
