An eight-year-old boy self-published a graphic novel about Christmas but never expected the book to attract a large fan base in the U.S. and overseas.
Author Dillon Helbig wrote the book, titled “The Adventures of Dillon Helbig's Christmas”, because he “likes Christmas and decorations”.
Dillon's journey to getting it published is a pretty interesting story.
During Christmas break, the second-grader penned the book filled with pictures. The book begins with Dillion himself decorating a Christmas tree. The star on top of the tree explodes, and then he is sucked into a portal (入口).
Over just four days, the boy filled in 81 pages of a journal. Then he went to the local Ada Community Library with his mother.
“He wanted to get his story out there so all the kids can read his adventures,” his mother said.
He was unsure how to get his book on the library shelf, so he planned to sneak (潜行) past the librarians.
“There were a lot of librarians,” Dillon said, but he successfully slid his book onto a children's picture-book shelf.
One of the librarians found it. And he said, "Oh, this is kind of interesting." And he added it to the catalog.
After secretly posting his book, Dillon's graphic novel attracted fans. 56 people were on the waiting list to check it out by the end of January. The number has grown to 88 this week. Demand for Dillon's graphic novel extends beyond the United States. One of the librarians received inquiries for the book from The Netherlands and Bangladesh.
Dillon has wanted to publish a book since he was five. The library gave Dillon an award for "best young novelist", which he does have a lot to be proud of.
    1. What inspired the boy to write the novel?
    A. His desire to attract fans worldwide.
    B. His interest in Christmas and decorations.
    C. His plan to add to the library catalog.
    D. His dream to win a literature award.
    2. What can we learn about the book from the text?
    A. It contains only pictures.
    B. It is a very thick book.
    C. It took three years to finish.
    D. It was written by hand.
    3. Why did Dillon go to the library with his mum?
    A. To share his book with other kids.
    B. To present his book to a librarian.
    C. To communicate with overseas readers.
    D. To borrow a children's picture book.
    4. Which word best describes the novel?
    A. Fictional. B. Positive.
    C. Realistic. D. Humorous.
根据第四段“The book begins with Dillion himself decorating a Christmas tree. The star on top of the tree explodes, and then he is sucked into a portal (入口)(这本书从Dillion自己装饰圣诞树开始。树顶的星星爆炸了,然后他被吸进了一个传送门)”可见是他对圣诞节和装饰品的兴趣。使他写了这本书,故选B。
    2. 细节理解题。根据第四段句子“During Christmas break, the second-grader penned the book filled with pictures(在圣诞节假期,二年级的学生写了一本充满图片的书)”可知这本书只包含图画。故选A。
根据第六段“He wanted to get his story out there so all the kids can read his adventures, his mother said.(他想把他的故事讲出来,这样所有的孩子都能读到他的冒险故事,他的母亲说)”可推知,与其他孩子分享他的书,应该是跟妈妈去图书馆的原因。故选A。
根据第一段“An eight-year-old boy self-published a graphic novel about Christmas but n ever expected the book to attract a large fen base in the U.S. and overseas.(一个八岁的男孩自己出版了一本关于圣诞节的图画小说,但他从没想到这本书会在美国和海外吸引大批读者)”。和最后一段“The library gave Dillon an award for "best young novelist",which he does have a lot to be proud of.(图书馆授予狄龙”最佳年轻小说家“奖,他确实有很多值得骄傲的地方)”。 A: Fictional(虚构的);B: Positive(肯定的,乐观的);C: Realistic(现实的);D: Humorous(幽默的)。故选B。

(2022·北京西城·一模)Every summer he came to our village on his cycle. The cycle was full of coconuts and on the handle was his small red money purse and the machete that he used to cut the coconuts. He always wore a blue and black checkered lungi and was known for his toothless smile that tended to turn into a slight laugh.
He often announced the arrival of summer by standing under our village’s Gulmohar tree. During the first touch of summer, red flowers fell on the ground and welcomed him to our village; soon the red flowers turned into long sword-like fruits which hung above his head as he cut the coconuts.
He never ate anything except paan (a kind of leaf), which he always could be seen chewing, and he just sat under the tree until someone approached him. Then, he would choose the best coconut, and with expert skill, carve it so that the person could drink the satisfying liquid.
For me he was an artist who knew how to carve the green coconut into an oasis (绿洲) of relief. He was the coconut whisperer, who knew which one had more water. Nobody ever talked about him, for he was of no significance to the busy people of our village. His existence will forever be tied to the shadow of the Gulmohar tree.
Nowadays, he doesn’t do much business. Kids no longer care for coconut water; they want soft drinks. I know his weak body will fail him in the coming years. He will not visit our village, and with him, all my memories of summer will disappear. No one will miss him apart from the Gulmohar tree, his only friend.
My friends and I have stayed in the same village our whole life. Now, in our mid-thirties, we don’t have time to talk about our childhood and the lite beyond the chains of society.
I’ve made up my mind. Tomorrow I will talk with him. I will listen to him and preserve him in my memory. I will tell him how important he was for me, how he defined summer for me, and, during every summer, how he nurtured (滋养) me with the coconut water, which was filled with his love. I will take in his smile one last time—a remembrance of my childhood innocence. I will hug him until my tears mix with his.
    5. What did the kids of the village receive from the coconut seller?
    A. Amusing toothless smiles. B. Refreshment in summer
    C. Coconut carving skills. D. Invaluable experience.
    6. In the eyes of the author, the coconut seller is ______.
    A. a magician in his childhood B. a hero during changing limes
    C. a survivor of a forgotten minority D. a protector of a precious tradition
    7. What message does the author want to express?
    A. Pass on what is yours to the next generation.
    B. Free yourself from the pressure of society.
    C. Enjoy the simple things in your busy life.
    D. Appreciate something before it’s gone.
根据第一段“The cycle was full of coconuts and on the handle was his small red money purse and the machete that he used to cut the coconuts.(自行车上装满了椰子,车把上放着他的红色小钱袋和砍椰子用的大砍刀。)”和第三段“Then, he would choose the best coconut, and with expert skill, carve it so that the person could drink the satisfying liquid.(然后,他会选择最好的椰子,并以专业的技能,雕刻它,让人喝下令人满意的液体。)”
根据第四段“For me he was an artist who knew how to carve the green coconut into an oasis of relief. He was the coconut whisperer, who knew which one had more water.(对我来说,他是一位艺术家,知道如何将绿色的椰子雕刻成浮雕的绿洲。他是椰子语者,知道哪一个有更多的水。)”可知,在作者眼中,卖椰子的人是他童年时代的魔术师。故选A。
根据第五段“He will not visit our village, and with him, all my memories of summer will disappear. (他不会再来我们村子了,和他一起,我所有关于夏天的记忆都会消失。)”和最后一段“I will tell him how important he was for me, how he defined summer for me, and, during every summer, how he nurtured me with the coconut water, which was filled with his love. I will take in his smile one last time—a remembrance of my childhood innocence. I will hug him until my tears mix with his.(我会告诉他他对我有多重要,他是如何定义夏天的,在每个夏天,他是如何用充满爱的椰子汁哺育我的。我要最后一次欣赏他的微笑——那是对我童年天真的回忆。我要拥抱他,直到我的眼泪和他的混合。)”及全文可知,文章主要表达了作者对于卖椰子的人的回忆的思念,感恩与珍惜。从而推断,作者想表达的信息是:在失去之前,要心存感激。故选D。

(2022·上海市第二中学模拟预测)Having worked at a 7-Eleven store for two years, I thought I had become successful at what our manager calls “customer relations”. I firmly believed that a friendly smile and an automatic “sir”, “ma’ma”, and “thank you” would see me through any situation that might arise, from comforting impatient or unpleasant people to apologizing for giving out the wrong change. But the other night an old woman shattered my belief that a simple and plain response could smooth over the rough spots of dealing with all kinds of customers.
The moment she entered, the woman presented a sharp contrast to our shiny store with its bright lighting and neatly arranged shelves. Walking as if each step were painful, she slowly pushed open the glass door and hobbled (蹒跚) down the nearest aisle. She coughed dryly, wheezing (气喘吁吁) with each breath. On a forty-degree night, she was wearing only a faded dress, a thin sweater too small to button, and black slippers with the backs cut out to expose calloused (满是老茧的) heels. There were no stockings or socks on her blue-veined legs.
After wandering around the store for several minutes, the old woman stopped in front of the rows of canned vegetables. She picked up a can of corn and stared with a strange intensity at the label. At that point, I decided to be a good, polite employee and asked her if she needed help. As I stood close to her, my smile became harder to maintain; her red-rimmed eyes were partially closed by yellowish crusts (痂); her hands were covered with layer upon layer of dirt, and the stale (陈腐的) smell of sweat rose from clothes.
“I need some food,” she muttered in reply to my bright “Can I help you?”
“Are you looking for corn, ma’am?”
“I need some food,” she repeated, “Any kind.”
“Well, the corn is ninety-five cents,” I said in my most helpful voice.
    “I can’t pay,” she said.
For a second, I was tempted to say, “Take the corn.” But the employee rules flooded into my mind: Remain polite, but do not let customers get the best of you. Let them know that you are in control. For a moment, I even entertained the idea that this was some sort of test, and that this woman was someone from the head office, testing my loyalty. I responded dutifully, “I’m sorry, but I can’t give away anything for free.”
The old woman’s face collapsed a bit more, and her hands trembled as she put the can back on the shelf. She shuffled (拖着脚走) past me toward the door, her torn and dirty clothing barely covering her bent back.
Moments after she left, I rushed out of the door with the can of corn, but she was nowhere in sight. For the rest of my shift, the image of the woman haunted (萦绕) me. I had been young, healthy and proud. She had been old, sick and desperate. Wishing with all my heart that I had acted like a human being rather than a robot, I was saddened to realize how weak a hold we have on our better instincts.
    8. How did the writer feel about his job at 7-Eleven before the old woman came?
    A. He was quite satisfied with his service manner.
    B. He found room for improvement in developing customer relations.
    C. He considered himself successful in dealing with all interpersonal relations.
    D. He thought himself experienced after working in the store for two years.
    9. The detailed account of the old woman is intended to show ________.
    A. how she presented a sharp contrast to the other customers
    B. how sick, poor and desperate for help she was
    C. how she surprised the writer with her unusual appearance
    D. how inappropriate it was for her to enter a place like this
    10. What’s the meaning of the phrase “get the best of” according to the passage?
    A. To make the most of. B. To bring out the best of.
    C. To win an advantage over. D. To bring into full play.
    11. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
    A. What If. B. How Come. C. If Only. D. Never Ever.
    【答案】A BCC
根据第一段关键句“Having worked at a 7-Eleven store for two years, I thought I had become successful at what our manager calls “customer relations”.(在一家7-11商店工作了两年后,我认为自己在我们经理所说的“客户关系”方面取得了成功)”可知,起初在7-11商店工作时,作者认为自己在所谓的“客户关系”方面取得了成功。 故选A项。
根据第二段关键句“She coughed dryly, wheezing (气喘吁吁) with each breath. On a forty-degree night, she was wearing only a faded dress, a thin sweater too small to button, and black slippers with the backs cut out to expose calloused
由此可知,划线部分get the best of与To win an advantage over(胜过,优于)意思接近。故选C项。
通读全文,结合最后一段关键句“Wishing with all my heart that I had acted like a human being rather than a robot, I was saddened to realize how weak a hold we have on our better instincts.(我发自内心地希望自己的行为像一个人,而不是一个机器人。当我意识到我们对更好的本能的控制是多么脆弱时,我很难过)”可知,作者讲述了自己在工作中严守员工规定,但却忽视了人类的本性,没有对需要帮助的人伸出援手,这让作者后悔不已,“If Only”意为“要是……多好”,选项能够概括文章主旨,表达了作者悔恨的心情,希望能够重新拥有人类善良的本性。故选C项。

(2022·天津和平·一模)It was time for Mr. Rocco to shut up the shop when I hurried into the flower shop. “Now, what is it you want? ” Mr. Rocco turned to me. “I want the most beautiful flower you have” I replied. “And just how much do you have to pay for this most beautiful flower? ” I held out a wet hand showing a quarter and dime. He nodded, and then showed me a plant on the counter. “I can give you this one for 35 cents, ” he said. “Aw, gee, ” I protested, “it looks like a weed (草)!” About 18 inches high, the plant was in a small pot covered with faded red paper. “Now trust me, boy-I promise that tomorrow morning when you get up, you will find your most beautiful flower,” said Mr. Rocco. I knew him to be a good honest man, so I agreed to take it.
It was almost midnight when I arrived home. Mum was seriously sick and using the front bedroom. I looked in to see if she was asleep, and then quietly tiptoed in and set the plant on the table beside her bed. I wanted her to be surprised when she woke on Mother’s Day.
The next morning, I dressed and hurried downstairs. The sun was shining through the kitchen window as I looked into Mum’s room and glanced over at the table where the plant was. My goodness! There were three big yellow trumpet shaped blooms. It was just like Mr. Rocco said -the most beautiful flower I ever saw! When I looked at Mum, she was smiling as tears streamed down her cheeks. She held out her hand for me to come near, then pulled me close and hugged me till it hurt. Then, remembering her contagious condition and that she wasn’t supposed to touch me, she quickly let me go.
My dear mum died the next night. The moment she hugged me turned out to be the most wonderful moment of my life. Not only had that beautiful plant helped show just how much I loved her, but I’d always know how much she loved me.
    12. The author didn’t like the plant at first sight because he thought ______.
    A. it was too cheap to be a gift
    B. the plant was actually a weed
    C. the plant couldn’t bring out beautiful flowers
    D. Mr. Rocco was reluctant to do the deal with him
    13. Since Mother’s condition was contagious, ______.
    A. she was at the death’s door
    B. she suffered from an illness
    C. others were sick of her appearance
    D. virus might spread from her to others
    14. What’s the mother’s reaction when she saw the flower?
    A. She was in great shock at the flower.
    B. She took it for granted on Mother’s Day.
    C. She was deeply moved by the precious gift.
    D. She praised the author for the beautiful flower.
    15. When the mother hugged the author tightly, it showed that ______.
    A. she liked being given gifts on holidays
    B. she appreciated what had been done for her
    C. she was aware of the arrival of Mother’s Day
    D. she was happy about the growth of her children
    16. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
    A. Flower of Love B. A Son and His Mother
    C. Low Price, High Value D. A Special Mother’s Day
根据第一段的““Aw, gee, ” I protested, “it looks like a weed (草)!” (‘哦,天哪,’我抗议道,‘它看起来像杂草。’)”和“Now trust me, boy-I promise that tomorrow morning when you get up, you will find your most beautiful flower(相信我,孩子——我保证明天早上当你起床时,你会找到你最美丽的花)”可知,作者刚看到这株植物时不喜欢它,是因为他认为它看起来像草,不能开出美丽的花朵。故选C。
根据倒数第二段的“Then, remembering her contagious condition and that she wasn’t supposed to touch me, she quickly let me go.(然后,她想起了她的传染性状况,她不应该碰我,她很快就让我走了)”可知,因为妈妈传染的情况,病毒可能会从她传染给其他人,因此她立刻让作者离开自己。故选D。
根据倒数第二段的“When I looked at Mum, she was smiling as tears streamed down her cheeks. (当我看着妈妈的时候,她在微笑,眼泪顺着脸颊流下来)”推知,作者妈妈看到礼物时非常感动。故选C。
    15. 推理判断题。根据第二段的“I wanted her to be surprised when she woke on Mother’s Day.(我想让她在母亲节那天醒来时感到惊讶)”和倒数第二段的“She held out her hand for me to come near, then pulled me close and hugged me till it hurt. (她伸出手让我靠近,然后把我紧紧地抱在怀里,直到我疼)”推知,妈妈紧紧抱着作者是因为她非常感激作者为她所做的。故选B。
    16. 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,文章主要讲述作者买了一株花为生病的妈妈庆祝母亲节,妈妈看到盛开的鲜花很感动,然而第二天晚上妈妈去世了。再结合最后一段的“Not only had that beautiful plant helped show just how much I loved her, but I’d always know how much she loved me.(那株美丽的植物不仅表达了我有多爱她,而且我也知道她有多爱我)”可知,A项“爱之花”可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选A。

(2022·北京门头沟·一模)Farmed fish should have the same legal protection as other farmed animals, according to an animal welfare group. The Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation, which has Carrie Johnson as a supporter, says fish deserve to be treated with the same care as cows, pigs, sheep and other livestock because they experience stress and pain.
The foundation is focusing on improving fish welfare during slaughter (屠宰) because that is where the biggest differences in protection lie.
Slaughterhouses for land animals are required to have a vet on site and must have closed-circuit television in all areas where animals are handled, stunned and killed, with footage stored for independent inspection. Such legal requirements do not apply to fish slaughter facilities, which are not subject to routine welfare inspections by public bodies.
The UK industry, which rears up to 80 million fish a year, has instead adopted voluntary codes of practice. A report by the foundation cites evidence of abuses of fish revealed last year by The Times. A stunning machine at the firm’s plant at Arnish on the Isle of Lewis failed to make them unconscious and workers used their fingers to tear the gills (鳃) and struggled to keep up with the volume of fish wriggling on the unit. Fish were thrown and kicked as they struggled on the ground in 2020 at Test Valley Trout Farming in Hampshire, which supplied the Ritz and Harrods. Fish considered unprofitable were dropped on the floor and left to die. The company said the treatment of the fish was unacceptable and it operated under “the best industry standards available”.
The foundation’s report refers to the findings of the government’s Farm Animal Welfare committee, which said in a 2014 opinion on fish welfare that “at least some species, including trout, have a sensory experience of pain” as well as “a degree of sense”.
Studies have shown that fish feel pain and change their behaviour to avoid it. In one study, goldfish were given an electric shock in an area of a tank where they received food. They avoided that area for three days before hunger overcame their fear.
The foundation report states that the UK government is failing aquatic animals dismally and calls for unannounced welfare inspections of fish slaughterhouses and says they should be required to install closed-circuit television, with footage reviewed by public bodies.
    17. What can we provide for the farmed fish?
    A. Comfortable place. B. Less pain.
    C. Enough food. D. Gentle love.
    18. As for the situation of the farmed fish, the foundation is ______.
    A. concerned B. puzzled
    C. surprised D. scared
    19. What’s the purpose of this article?
    A. To encourage people to treat fish kindly.
    B. To reveal the evidence of abuses of fish.
    C. To appeal for the improvement of fish welfare.
    D. To explain how fish experience pain during slaughter.
    【答案】B A C
根据第一段最后一句“The Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation, which has Carrie Johnson as a supporter, says fish deserve to be treated with the same care as cows, pigs, sheep and other livestock because they experience stress and pain.(保守动物福利基金会声称鱼类应当得到与牛、猪、羊等家畜一样的关爱,因为它们也能感受到压力和痛苦)”可知,正因为鱼类也能感到压力和痛苦,动物福利组织才提出对鱼类进行合法保护,这正是文章的主题,人类能为养殖鱼做的就是减轻它们的痛苦。故选B项。
第二段指出“The foundation is focusing on improving fish welfare during slaughter (屠宰) because that is where the biggest differences in protection lie.(基金会专注于提高鱼类在宰杀期间的福利,因为保护中最大的区别就在于此)”,文章在后文中对于differences即鱼类宰杀和其他家畜宰杀时的区别进行了详细描述,而第三段第二句指出“A report by the foundation cites evidence of abuses of fish revealed last year by The Times.(一份由基金会给出的报告列出了去年虐待鱼类的证据)”,文章最后也点明“The foundation report states that the UK government is failing aquatic animals dismally and calls for unannounced welfare inspections of fish slaughterhouses and says they should be required to install closed-circuit television, with footage reviewed by public bodies.(基金会的报告陈述道,英国政府在水生动物上很失败,呼吁未宣布的对鱼类宰杀室的福利检查,并表示他们应当被要求安装闭路电视,保留可供公众审查的镜头)”,综上可知,英国当前养殖鱼的福利情况存在很多问题,基金会对此的态度应当是感到担忧的。故选A项。

Rene Compean was no stranger to Angeles National Forest. He’d hiked the park numerous times. But when hiking along a new path, the 45-year-old was lost.
As the day faded into darkness, his concern turned to fear. With only a little water in his backpack and 10% battery remaining on his cellphone, Compean was unprepared for anything more than the two-hour trip he’d planned.
Compean climbed to a spot where he found one bar of signal. “SOS. My phone is going to die. I’m lost,” he texted a friend, attaching a photo showing where he was. The shot showed his legs hanging over a rock face. All Compean could do then was wait. The temperature was dropping fast. Dressed only in shorts, and a sweatshirt, the hiker was chilled to the bone. He hugged himself into a tight ball. And after spotting two mountain lions, he spent the night on high alert.
Sixty miles away, Ben Kuo was working at home when he read a posting from the police, showing an image of a man’s legs. The search-and-rescue teams had spent the previous night unsuccessfully looking for Compean, so they released the photo, hoping someone might recognize the location.
“I’ve always loved looking for where photos are taken,” Kuo says. He frequently tries to identify where movie scenes or commercials were filmed. He’s often successful. When he saw the image, he automatically pulled up a satellite map on his laptop. “There’s an amazing amount of information you can get from satellites,” he says. The first thing he noticed in Compean’s photo was plenty of greenery. After comparing it to the satellite map, Kuo realized something: “He’s got to be on the south side because there’re not any green valleys on the north side.”
That finding led him to an area that looked like the territory in the image. The final step was cross- referencing the original photo with 3-D images of the area. The locations matched!
After spending 27 hours in the wilderness, Compean was found.
Compean’s story probably would have ended differently had it not been for the man with strong satellite skills and a sharp eye for detail.
    20. What caused Compean to get lost on the hike?
    A. The thick forest. B. The unfamiliar route.
    C. The coming of nightfall. D. Low battery on the phone.
    21. Kuo was able to offer help because of ______.
    A. his photo reading ability B. his sense of responsibility
    C. his professional experience D. his familiarity with the area
    22. What can we learn from this story?
    A. One good turn deserves another.
    B. Chance favors the prepared mind.
    C. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
    D. There’s no such thing as useless knowledge.

(2022·贵州黔东南·一模)In the depths of space orbits is an intergalactic space station. Living here are some of the smartest scientists and their families. After traveling billions of miles, two scientists, Clyde and Klara Klosno, and their kids Kelvin and Bula, are the newest members of the space station. This is a story told in the new book, ScrFi Junior High, written by Scott Seegert and illustrated by John Martin.
Seegert, a former engineer, was inspired to give writing a try at age 45 after reading a book written by a famous writer. After working on that book for three years, Seegert's hard work paid off when it was published in 2007. After that success, he decided to focus on writing books for kids.
Martin always loved to write and draw. As a kid, he spent evenings and weekends watching cartoons and drawing superheroes, Martin says he was “avoiding homework”, without realizing that he was really working towards his future career. (2022·浙江杭州·二模)When Oumou Dieye first started competing against men in the sport of golf, she was not confident and felt a little afraid. The men did not want to golf with her nor did they take her seriously. But then, she won her first game. After that, she had all the confidence she needed to keep playing and defeating male golfers.
Dieye is the only professional female golfer in Senegal. She was introduced to golf by her brother-in-law and immediately fell in love. Not long after she began competing, Dieye was given a chance to train in Morocco. With the financial support from her French golf partners, she spent three months training with the Moroccan Golf Federation. She said she enjoyed the experience so much that she returned to Morocco and stayed for seven years. While there, she also taught children at a golfing school.
Today her home is filled with many golfing awards. She has won so many that she has lost track of the number. What she has done is notable because Senegal is a conservative, Muslim nation. There is much pressure from society for women not to be involved in professional sports. The country practices a more liberal form of Islam However, the culture still has traditional ideas of what women should do. A woman who chooses sports over duties at home risks being rejected by her family. At first, her family was not supportive. But after seeing her love of the sport, they changed their minds.
In 2018, when Dieye returned from Morocco, she was not happy about the state of golf in her home country. She wanted to create a golf school similar to the one in Morocco. In 2020, the Senegalese Golf Federation agreed to help Dieye establish a golf school in preparation for the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics in Dakar. It will be Dieye’s job to train Senegal’s first national golf team. This will involve preparing female golfers-including her own daughter.
    27. What was the situation when Dieye first played golf with male players?
    A. She was a shy girl short of social skills.
    B. Her family didn’t support her golf career.
    C. They didn’t think she was a worthy competitor.
    D. She was the only female golfer of the country.
    28. What can we learn about the country of Senegal?
    A. It has received financial support from France.
    B. Women there are encouraged to stay at home.
    C. Sports play an important part in people’s life.
    D. Golf players are very popular in the country.
    29. Which of the following best describes Dieye?

(2022·天津市咸水沽第一中学模拟预测)Leonardo da Vinci, one of the greatest thinkers in the world, began his career as an artist. Very little is known about Leonardo's early life. He was born in 1452 in the town of Vinci. As a boy, Leonardo showed a great interest in drawing, sculpting and observing nature.
However, because Leonardo was born to parents who were not married to each other, he was barred from some studies and professions. He trained as an artist after moving to Florence with his father in the 1460s. It was an exciting time to be in Florence, one of the cultural capitals of Europe. Leonardo trained with one of the city's very successful artists, Andrea del Verrocchio. He was a painter, sculptor and gold worker. Verrocchio told his students that they needed to understand the body's bones and muscles when drawing people.
Leonardo took the teacher's advice very seriously. He spent several periods of his life studying the human body by taking apart and examining dead bodies. While training as an artist, Leonardo also learned about and improved on relatively new painting methods at the time. One was the use of perspective (透视) to show depth. A method called "sfumato" helped to create a cloudy effect to suggest distance. "Chiaroscuro" is a method using light and shade as a painterly effect.
Leonardo's first known portrait now hangs in the National Gallery in Washington, D. C. He made this painting of a young woman named Ginevra de'Benci around 1474. The woman has a pale face with dark hair. In the distance, Leonardo painted the Italian countryside.
He soon received attention for his extraordinary artistic skills. Around 1475 he was asked to draw an angel in Verrocchio's painting "Baptism of Christ." One story says that when Verrocchio saw Leonardo's addition to the painting, he was so amazed by his student's skill that he said he would never paint again.

Melanie Perkins is co-founder of Canva, which allows users to create graphic designs for free in its simplest version, from social media posts to professional presentations.
The Canva journey started back in 2007, when Perkins was studying at the University of Western Australia. At that time she was teaching students how to use programs like InDesign and Photoshop. Students found the programs hard to learn, and even harder to use. She imagined the future of design would be entirely different. It would be online and very simple.
Perkins got the idea of creating a great new product. At the time, it was just a dream; after all, she and Cliff Obrecht, another co-founder of the company, were just university students with no funding and no technical or entrepreneurial (创业的) knowledge need to create the product and the company.
However, what Melanie and her then friend Obrecht ( now husband ) did have was determination. They took the plunge and created their first design start-up called Fusion Books. It was an easy online platform for designing high school yearbooks. That turned out to be a success, and gave them wings for the next step: Canva.
However, they needed funding. Finding the right people took two years but there was always a lot of rejection for entrepreneurs in their early days, But every time they got a hard question or a reason why people wouldn’t invest, they stayed focused on what they could change. “The normal thing to do after your 100th, 80th or even 20th' no' would be to stop, but you just have to insist trying,” Melanie said.
A key person in getting Canva of the ground was Cameron Adams, an ex-Google employee who brought the technical expertise they needed.

My mother enters her ninth decade. Thankfully, she is blessed with good health.
I still remember ten years ago when she turned 80, she surprised my brother and me with what she described as “independent birthday”.
One day she informed us she'd booked a seven-night trip to Turkey. Alone. Because she had never been. Of course, that was absurd. There was no way my brother and I could allow that. A weak, little old lady wandering the streets of Istanbul on her own, not speaking a word of Turkish, with no knowledge of the laws and customs of the land—it was out of the question!
She paid no attention to us. Off she went. When she returned, she told us it had been a wonderful success. As it turned out, she had barely spent any time alone, after hiring a taxi driver to show her around Istanbul for some days. He took her to all the sites—the markets, churches and restaurants. He introduced her to a blanket seller, “a lovely fellow,” and she bought some blankets. The seller took her address details and promised to ship them to Canada. They would be arriving in three or four weeks. My mother beamed (眉开眼笑) as she told this story. The blanket seller and my mother apparently built a friendship and she told him to drop by if he were ever in Canada.
To our great shock, her blankets did arrive some weeks later, along with a lovely note from the seller Mustafa. To our even greater surprise, the following year Mustafa himself arrived in Canada. He called our mother to inform her be was in Ottawa.
“I invited him over and he came by for a cup of tea. They drink a lot of tea in Turkey,” my mother told my horrified brother and me.
Her trip of independence seems to be thoughtfully based on a realization that life is to be lived. It reminded me of the line from The Shawshank Redemption: “Get busy living or get busy dying.”
    47. Why did the author's mother go to Turkey alone?
    A. To make the author and the brother surprised.
    B. To celebrate her 80th birthday independently.

    A. Colorful. B. Boring.
    C. Dangerous. D. Challenging.
    49. What do we know about the blanket seller?
    A. He is poor but generous. B. He is reliable and cautious.
    C. He is rich but selfish. D. He is friendly and trustworthy.
    50. What can we learn from the text?
    A. It's never too old to learn. B. East or West, home is best.
    C. Life deserves to be well lived. D. Time and tide wait for no man.

故选A。

(2022·陕西·宝鸡市陈仓高级中学二模)A 168-pound American black bear rushed out of the open end of the opening cage and ran away from it into the woods off a logging road. His sister, weighing in at 135 pounds, took a little more time to overcome her fear and confusion before she, too, ran for the trees and away from the humans who had driven more than 100 miles to witness the bears’ return to the wild.
The baby bears were the 106th and 107th orphaned(孤儿的) or injured bears to be raised or treated at the Progressive Animal Welfare Society(PAWS) Wildlife Center in Washington state, then released more than a year later in the same general area where they were originally found.
They were only two weeks old when a forest worker and his dog accidentally disturbed their den(兽穴) in February 2020, scaring away their mother. She never returned. After more than a year, the two bears returned to the wild. “Not a lot of agencies have the funding to do this kind of work. We hope to leave the state of Washington with better bear management than when we arrived,” said Rich Beausoleil, WDFW biologist. “We’ve found our public here in Washington appreciate that we go the extra miles and give these orphaned bears a second shot at life.”

At noon, I would race breathlessly home, a ten-minute walk from my school. My mother was waiting for me with pleasure to have lunch while I shared what happened at school.
I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, hardly had I stepped on stage when every word escaped me. Finally, my teacher asked me to change to a narrator’s (解说员) part. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
Under the rose vine, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英), as if a painter had touched our landscape with shades of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I argued. “All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.”
My mother asked thoughtfully, “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” I nodded, pleased I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. I burst into tears, a mixture of relief and regret swelling up as I told her what had happened.
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging me as she did. “The narrator’s part is important, too.” Composing myself gradually, I began to accept the narrator’s part. Then came the performance day. I was still nervous, but it was at that very moment that I found a dandelion in my pocket. It was obvious that my mom secretly put the flower there, which magically gave me confidence.
    55. Why did the author get changed to the narrator’s part?
    A. She was shy. B. She lacked practice.
    C. She disliked the former role. D. She totally forgot the lines.
    56. What did her mother do when the author felt upset?
    A. Her mother asked her what happened patiently.
    B. Her mother insisted on her practicing the lines.
    C. Her mother made her realize every role counted.
    D. Her mother immediately encouraged her to cheer up.
    57. Which of the following can best describe the author’s mother?
    A. Sympathetic but strict. B. Understanding and wise.
    C. Passionate but anxious. D. Curious and easy-going.

    A. All that glitters is not gold.

    C. Constant dripping wears away a stone.
    D. Every individual can make a difference.

根据倒数第二段的“My mother asked thoughtfully, “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” (母亲若有所思地问道:“是啊,每一种花都以其独特的方式给人带来快乐,不是吗?)”和““And that is true of people too,” she added.(“人也是如此,”她补充道。)”以及最后一段的““But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging me as she did. “The narrator’s part is important, too.”(“但你会成为一名出色的解说员,”她边说边鼓励我。“叙述者的角色也很重要。”)”可知,当作者感到不高兴时,她的母亲让她意识到每一个角色都很重要。故选C。
    57. 推理判断题。根据第三段内容尤其是最后一句“Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.(她没有建议我们练习台词,而是问我愿不愿意去院子里走走。)”可知,作者没有告诉母亲那天发生了什么,但母亲却感受到了作者的难过,母亲并没有建议作者练习台词,而是询问作者是否想去院子里走走,所以母亲是善解人意的,即understanding;根据倒数第二段的“My mother asked thoughtfully, “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” (母亲若有所思地问道:“是啊,每一种花都以其独特的方式给人带来快乐,不是吗?)”和““And that is true of people too,” she added.(“人也是如此,”她补充道。)”以及最后一段的““But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging me as she did. “The narrator’s part is important, too.”(“但你会成为一名出色的解说员,”她边说边鼓励我。“叙述者的角色也很重要。”)”可知,母亲通过自己的做法让作者意识到每个角色都很重要,所以母亲是充满智慧的,即wise。故选B。

(2022·山东·潍坊一中模拟预测)Seminole was far too accustomed to the business. Everyone sympathized with him depending on long hours, minimum wage, and ill-mannered customers. Although struggling to pay his rent, he still went all out to make those lucky enough to sit at his tables laugh. The day was going quick.
He was exhausted when he arrived to work the next day, but he went about his daily duties, putting on a brave face as customers complained about the food or questioned the bill. Usually as he prepared to close for the night, a couple of customers would sit down and order drinks. Most of the crew had left by closing time, but Seminole stayed to serve. Eventually, the last round was ordered and he gave them the bill. The minimum tip was suggested on the receipt. “Tomorrow will be better,” murmured he.
But luck wasn’t on his side. Evening approaching, a group of teenagers stepped in. Thankfully, they were polite and respectful. Their cheerful behavior began to rub off on him. As always, he did his best to make their dining experience a pleasant one.
Once they finished their dishes, he placed the bill on the table, accompanied with some candies. They placed their notes on the receipt and left smiling. When he returned to clear the table, he was shocked. The teenagers only left a tip of $3, but their total bill was more than $100. He’d gone above and beyond serving the tasty dishes. How could they be so rude?
Later that week, he struggled to let go of the awkward memories. He arrived at work and expected it to be like any other, but there was something left behind the desk for him — a two-page handwritten letter from the teenagers with $18 attached, in which they explained they were unaware of the tipping practice due to it being their first time out alone. Everything suddenly made sense.
Seminole was so touched by their gesture that he uploaded a picture of the letter sharing their admirable efforts. Web visitors voiced their opinions, and the reaction was more than positive.
    63. Why did Seminole wear a brave face?
    A. To serve better. B. To relax himself.
    C. To sell more drinks. D. To gain a reputation.
    64. What made the teenagers only leave a tip of $3?
    A. Ignorance of tipping culture. B. Dissatisfaction with the meal.
    C. Gratitude for Seminole's service. D. Misunderstanding of tipping practice.
    65. Which of the following best describes Seminole?
    A. Patient and innovative. B. Generous and tolerant.
    C. Positive and committed. D. Considerate and ambitious.
    66. What can we learn from the teenagers in the text?
    A. One good turn deserves another. B. Actions speak louder than words.
    C. Honesty can turn into an opportunity. D. It is better to make things right than not.

(2022·江苏连云港·二模)Riding a horse at a high speed on grassland covered with snow while dressed in a red cloak (披风) and a white fur hat isn't something people would normally see a Chinese government official do. So it's not surprising that He Jiaolong, a female official from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, almost instantly became an online celebrity after she posted such a video.
She came up with the idea to make the video when she was thinking about new ways to let more people know about the famous horse breed (品种) of Zhaosu County, Ili, known as “heavenly horses”.
“I never expected the video to be such a hit. At first, I really didn't like to be called an online celebrity, because l never wanted to be one. But now I'm gradually getting used to using my influence to boost local development, she said.
Besides posting short videos, she has also been promoting local agricultural products and tourist resources via livestreaming (直播). With more followers, she can now help to sell local products worth more than 2 million yuan during a livestream while sales were only about 5,000 yuan each time when she first started to livestream on social media.
While she continues to draw the public's attention to Ili, she also has to keep dealing with the stress brought by criticism, especially often being questioned if being a social media celebrity may affect her work as an official. She said that she had even thought of giving up appearing on social media several times.
“I am, above all, a government official. I will never let what I do on social media affect my job,” she said. “I want to see the locals appreciate my efforts in serving them, which is my duty. (2022·安徽蚌埠·三模)It was an early September day, cool and bright and just right for running, and I was in the first few miles of a 10.5-mile race over a course through tiring hills. Still I felt rested and springy; despite the hills, it was going to be a fine run.
Just ahead of me was Peggy Mimno, a teacher from Mount Kisco, New York. She too was running easily, moving along efficiently at my speed. The pace felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where I was: why bother concentrating on pace when she was such a nice pacesetter for me? I would overtake her later on when she tired.
So I was running closely behind her. Then the race was getting tougher. We had four miles left and already it was beginning to be real work. I was breathing hard.
Peggy overtook a young male runner. Apparently she knew him, for they exchanged a few cheerful words as she passed him. Their exchange worried me. You don’t chat during a race unless you are feeling good, and Peggy plainly was, but whatever springiness I had once possessed had left me long since.
Still, I was close enough to overtake her if she tired, so I didn’t give up hope completely. We were approaching a long, punishing hill now and it would be the test. We were a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly determine who crossed it first.
As I moved up the hill, working hard, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Peggy was moving away—first five yards, then ten, then more. Finally it was clear that there was no hope of catching her. She beat me decisively.
There is an important lesson in that race. Much of what you read about running makes a sharp distinction between the sexes. Women are assumed to be weaker, slower and not nearly as skilled athletically. Yet as Peggy Mimno so clearly demonstrated, the similarities between male and female runners are more important than the differences.
    71. What did the writer think of the conditions of the race?
    A. Long and tough. B. Fun and convenient.
    C. Pleasant but challenging. D. Comfortable but disappointing.
    72. How did the writer feel about the race when he first saw Peggy?
    A. Humble. B. Confident.
    C. Discouraged. D. Embarrassed.
    73. What worried the writer according to Paragraph 4?
    A. Peggy came across her friend. B. Peggy was extremely tired.
    C. Peggy ran past the writer suddenly. D. Peggy chatted with another runner.
    74. What can be inferred about the writer before the race?
    A. He had prejudice against women.
    B. He didn’t know Peggy Mimno.
    C. He didn’t dare to face difficulties.
    D. He considered women skilled athletically.
根据第一段“Still I felt rested and springy; despite the hills, it was going to be a fine run.(但我还是觉得休息得很好,很有弹性;尽管有山,这将会是一个很好的跑步)”可知,作者认为比赛的条件愉快但有挑战性。故选C。
根据第二段“The pace felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where I was: why bother concentrating on pace when she was such a nice pacesetter for me? I would overtake her later on when she tired.(她的速度让我感觉很舒服,所以我决定原地不动:她对我来说是一个很好的领跑者,为什么还要费心关注速度呢?等她累了,我再赶上她)”可知,当作者第一次看到佩吉时,他对比赛很有自信,认为自己可以超越她。故选B。
    73. 细节理解题。根据第四段“Their exchange worried me. You don’t chat during a race unless you are feeling good, and Peggy plainly was, but whatever springiness I had once possessed had left me long since.(他们的交流让我担心。在比赛期间,除非你感觉良好,否则你是不会聊天的,很明显,佩吉感觉很好,但我曾经拥有的那种活力,早已离开了我)”可知,作者已经筋疲力尽但佩吉还可以和别人聊天,证明她状态很好,这让作者很担心自己会输。故选D。
    74. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Much of what you read about running makes a sharp distinction between the sexes. Women are assumed to be weaker, slower and not nearly as skilled athletically.(你所读到的关于跑步的很多内容都有明显的性别差异。女性被认为较弱、较慢,而且在运动技能上也不如男性)”可知,在赛跑之前,我们可以推断出作者对妇女有偏见。故选A。

Kwane Stewart has been working overtime. When his workday ends, the San Diego-based veterinarian does not stop caring for animals. Stewart, who has been a vet for over 20 years, has developed a passion for helping the homeless and their pets. And a few years ago, he found himself stopping to treat pets living on the street.
As he walked on the streets of San Diego, Stewart would stop to give free check-ups to homeless people’s pets. “A quick check-up, maybe some medicine or food... it isn’t a lot but sometimes giving a little can make all the difference,” says Stewart.
Word about his mission to help animals spread, and he ended up getting his own reality TV show, which follows him to other cities in California, where he provides free treatment for the pets he sees on the streets.
With his show, the Street Vet, which is shown on Canada’s Cottage TV, Stewart hopes to “raise awareness and encourage others to give a little back, too.” But despite the widespread attention, his mission does face some challenges.
“Some of the pets I come across need treatment (life-saving in some cases) that can be very costly and it’s hard to ever say no to a pet that is suffering,” Stewart explains on GoFundMe page he created to help raise money for these animals.
The money raised could go to minor treatments, like ear infections, which can be around US$100, or more serious cases like a tumor (肿瘤) removal, which can be up to US$1, 500. “All donations will go to the care of these pets and will surely make a difference in the owners' lives as well,” Stewart writes.
He started a story about one dog he treats named Dinker, who has a rare condition that will require surgery. Stewart and the pup’s owner, Walter, are trying to make the procedure happen, but it’s very expensive. With over US$ 60, 000 raised so far, Stewart hopes to soon help Dinker and other homeless pets just like him get the treatment they need.
“Working on the streets, I’ve experienced some of the most genuine stories of love, compassion, struggle and hope,” he says. “It’s been life-changing and truly inspiring.”
    75. How can we best describe Stewart as a vet?
    A. Unqualified. B. Sympathetic. C. Stubborn. D. Demanding.
    76. Why was the Street Vet created?
    A. To promote Stewart's TV program.
    B. To call on people to donate to the needy.
    C. To honor veterinarian Stewart's selfless behavior.
    D. To raise people’s awareness of homeless animals’ need for care.
    77. What challenge does Stewart face?
    A. His TV show has received little attention.
    B. Medical equipment to treat pets is out of date.
    C. The money for the treatment of pets is insufficient.
    D. There are too many homeless pets in need of treatment.
    78. What does Stewart think of his work on the streets?
    A. Rewarding. B. Tiring. C. Effortless. D. Complex.
通读全文,根据第一段“When his workday ends, the San Diego-based veterinarian does not stop caring for animals. 76. 细节理解题。根据第四段中“With his show, the Street Vet, which is shown on Canada’s Cottage TV, Stewart hopes to “raise awareness and encourage others to give a little back, too.”(Stewart希望通过他的节目《街头兽医》能“提高人们的意识,并鼓励其他人也回馈社会。”该节目在加拿大的Cottage电视台播出)”可知,创建《街头兽医》是为了提高人们对无家可归的动物需要照顾的意识。故选D项。
    77. 细节理解题。根据第四段中“But despite the widespread attention, his mission does face some challenges. (但是,尽管受到了广泛关注,他的使命也面临着一些挑战)”和倒数第二段中“Stewart and the pup’s owner, Walter, are trying to make the procedure happen, but it’s very expensive. With over US$ 60, 000 raised so far, Stewart hopes to soon help Dinker and other homeless pets just like him get the treatment they need. (Stewart和这只小狗的主人Walter正努力让这一手术顺利进行,但费用非常昂贵。到目前为止,Stewart已经筹集了六万美元,他希望能尽快帮助Dinker和其他像他一样无家可归的宠物得到他们所需要的治疗)”可知,Stewart面临用于宠物治疗的资金不足的挑战。故选C项。

(2022·陕西商洛·一模)At the graduate program’s annual workshop (研讨会), presentation after presentation highlighted students’ successes. But Michelle, Emily, and two other PhD students were taking a different approach, sharing their most painful failures. The audience of PhD students sat in silence, apparently shocked. However, they weren’t ashamed, but proud to share their full selves and build a foundation for authentic relationships.
Setbacks (挫折) are an unavoidable part of graduate school, but often we try to hide them. By sharing our whole selves, including our failures, we go on to build a deep, meaningful relationship.
Michelle and Emily wanted others to experience that openness and support, too. So they made a change to the workshop by presenting their stories onstage, and invited the audience members to turn to one another and share their own significant failures. An awkward silence followed, but it only lasted a few seconds. Soon the students jumped into enthusiastic conversation.
From that point forward, every presentation at the workshop included some mention of the failures that led to the results. The students shared that their most significant data slides took more than a year to get right. It reminded the audience that behind every impressive result is a person who is just trying his or her best.
Since the workshop, Michelle and Emily have noticed a continuous change in their classmates. Besides feeling closer to their classmates, the students are asking one another for help not only on technical challenges, but also about how to handle the personal challenges.
It’s hard to relate to someone when all we know about them is their accomplishments. We should talk about failure and normalize it. To lead by example, Emily said that she hadn’t won an NSF fellowship. It was a disappointment, but she was proud to share it.
    79. Why did the four PhD students share their failures at the workshop?
    A. To shock their classmates. B. To show their differences.
    C. To highlight the atmosphere. D. To build authentic relations.
    80. How did the audience react to the stories of Michelle and Emily?
    A. They felt calm. B. They appreciated them.
    C. They were ashamed. D. They ignored them.
    81. What happens to the students after the workshop?
    A. Their grades have improved a lot.
    B. Their confidence has been rebuilt.
    C. Their interaction becomes in-depth.
    D. Their data slides are specialized.
    82. What may be the best title for the text?
    A. Achieve successes through failures
    B. Build relationships by sharing failures
    C. Let’s deal with failures appropriately
    D. Talk about your stories in the workshop
根据第一段的“However, they weren’t ashamed, but proud to share their full selves and build a foundation for authentic relationships.(然而,他们并不感到羞耻,而是为分享完整的自我和建立真实的关系而自豪)”可知,四个博士生在研讨会上分享他们的失败是为了建立真正的关系。故选D。
根据第三段的“So they made a change to the workshop by presenting their stories onstage, and invited the audience members to turn to one another and share their own significant failures. An awkward silence followed, but it only lasted a few seconds. Soon the students jumped into enthusiastic conversation.(因此,他们在研讨会上做了一个改变,将他们的故事呈现在舞台上,并邀请观众转向彼此,分享他们自己的重大失败。接着是一阵尴尬的沉默,但只持续了几秒钟。不久,学生们开始了热烈的交谈)”可知,观众听完她们的故事后同意和彼此分享自己的失败,因此观众对米歇尔和爱米丽的故事是欣赏的,故选B。
    81. 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段的“Besides feeling closer to their classmates, the students are asking one another for help not only on technical challenges, but also about how to handle the personal challenges.(除了感觉与同学之间的关系更亲密之外,学生们还相互寻求帮助,不仅是在技术挑战方面,而且是在如何应对个人挑战方面)”可知,在研讨会结束后学生们的互动和交流变得深入。故选C。
通读全文,尤其是第一段的“But Michelle, Emily, and two other PhD students were taking a different approach, sharing their most painful failures. The audience of PhD students sat in silence, apparently shocked. However, they weren’t ashamed, but proud to share their full selves and build a foundation for authentic relationships.(但米歇尔、艾米丽和另外两名博士生采取了不同的方法,分享了他们最痛苦的失败。博士生们沉默地坐着,显然很震惊。然而,他们并不感到羞耻,而是为分享完整的自我和建立真实的关系而自豪)”可知,本文主要讲的是米歇尔、艾米丽和另外两名博士生研究生项目的年度研讨会上分享了他们最痛苦的失败,他们认为这让同学们关系更亲密,且相互寻求帮助,因此最好的标题是B选项“Build relationships by sharing failures(通过分享失败来建立关系)”。故选B。

(2022·河南·模拟预测)For most children, bath time is fun. But four-year-old Harry Floyd used to have a very different experience—soon after climbing into the water he felt itchy (发痒的) from head to foot.
Harry first started to develop small itchy bumps on the skin at three months old. He woke at 3 a. m. and was covered in the bumps, but they cleared up within an hour. When Harry's mother Lisa got him to the doctor, there was nothing to see. Lisa initially thought it was the soap that Harry was allergic to, but even when she just used water to bathe him he would still get the bumps. Lisa was then alarmed to see that when the weather was really cold or hot Harry would start to get them. Within a few minutes they would spread over his body.   He'd just scream and try to scratch them.
Lisa and her husband Eddie took Harry to the doctor many times over the next year, but were told it was simply a virus and the condition wouldn't affect his older brother, Oliver. At six months Harry was diagnosed with several food allergies, which doctors thought might have caused the bumps. But Harry continued to get the bumps even after shunning those foods. Out of desperation, the family took Harry to Great Ormond Street Hospital to see a private specialist. By coincidence, Harry got the bumps when they were waiting to see the consultant. So the consultant saw exactly how severe it was. And Harry was diagnosed with physical urticaria (荨麻疹), a skin allergy to a host of common triggers (触发物). Since the diagnosis, Harry’s condition has greatly improved.
The cause of physical urticaria is still a mystery. Genetics may play a role and stress has been seen as a trigger. From newborn babies to the old are likely to suffer from it. Recent research suggests around one million people in Britain suffer from the condition, although experts say this may be inaccurate, with many more going undiagnosed.
    83. Why does Harry's problem remain unsolved at the first time?
    A. Lisa was unsure about the triggers.
    B. Hospital equipment was not advanced.
    C. His symptoms disappeared in a short time.
    D. Doctors lacked experience to identify the bumps.
    84. What does the underlined word “shunning” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Digesting. B. Avoiding.
    C. Selecting. D. Ignoring.
    85. What can we know from the last paragraph?
    A. Physical urticaria can start at any age.
    B. Harry's father used to have physical urticaria.
    C. Physical urticaria is rather uncommon in Britain.
    D. Physical urticaria can be easily passed on to children.
    86. What does the text mainly talk about?
    A. The symptoms of a rare disease.
    B. The possible causes of physical urticaria.
    C. A family seeking treatment for their injured kid.
    D. A little boy suffering from a terrible skin allergy.
根据第二段第二句“...but they cleared up within an hour.”(但他们在一小时内就消去了。)和第三句“When Harry’s mother Lisa got him to the doctor, there was nothing to see. ”(当Harry的母亲丽莎带他去看医生时,什么也看不见了。) 可推知,Harry身上的肿块消失得很快,妈妈带他去看医生的时候已经消了,无法诊断,所以一开始问题没有得到解决。故选C项。
    84. 词句猜测题。根据第三段“...At six months Harry was diagnosed with several food allergies, which doctors thought might have caused the bumps. But Harry continued to get the bumps even after shunning those foods.”(...
根据最后一段第三句“From newborn babies to the old are likely to suffer from it.”(从新生儿到老年人都可能遭受这种疾病。) 故选A项。
A little boy suffering from a terrible skin allergy(一个患有严重皮肤过敏的小男孩)符合文意。故选D项。

(2022·北京朝阳·一模)I first discovered the Little Free Library concept while being on a 2015 vacation in Santa Barbara, California. I fell in love with the idea of free literature-sharing boxes posted at the edges of parks and along sidewalks in neighbourhoods. And because our home was already filled with mountainous piles of books, my husband wasn’t the least bit surprised when I suggested starting a Little Free Library of our own. In our garden shed (棚) , we filled the shelves with books from our personal collection. Over the next two months, strangers discovered our Little Free Library and began their regular visit.
My love of reading dates back to 1970, when I studied in a three-room primary schoolhouse on a dirt road. One day, I accidentally came to the basement library and I was fascinated by the picture books. Unfortunately, the books were later thrown away when the school discovered the basement was full of mould (霉). Happily, weeks later, a truck arrived with a trailer—which, with the help of our county’s public library, had been transformed into a paradise (乐土) for those who enjoyed reading. Now I still remember the floor-to-ceiling shelves and the carpeted benches in it. Every time I left, I wrote my name on several sign-out cards, which were filled with names of children from neighbouring schools. We liked the same books and, although we never met, I considered them friends.
At the beginning of the first COVID-19 lockdown, our Little Free Library began to include children’s stories. I witnessed mothers lifting their children for a look into the library. Walkers included our street in their route so they could check for new offerings. Some folks routinely drove from several blocks away to visit. From time to time, visitors filled shelves with literary fiction, romances, poetry and a range of non-fiction. I smiled when people met me in the yard and commented that our Little Free Library was like a bird feeder.
We remain grateful that we have kept our Little Free Library open. It has become an alternative means of creating a community of people with mutual regard for humanity and the written word. We are together even when apart.
    87. What inspired the author to start the Little Free Library?
    A. Her large collection of books. B. An experience during a vacation.
    C. Her husband’s encouragement. D. Strangers’ visit to her garden shed.
    88. From the passage, we can learn that________.
    A. neighbouring schools donated books to the Little Free Library
    B. the author’s enthusiasm for reading started from her childhood
    C. children wrote their names on the sign-out cards to meet friends
    D. the county’s public library became a perfect place for book lovers
    89. People considered the Little Free Library a bird feeder because________.
    A. it provided food for thought B. it attracted birds for shelter
    C. visitors could feed birds here D. people could exchange books here
由第一段中的“I first discovered the Little Free Library concept while being on a 2015 vacation in Santa Barbara, California. (2015年在加利福尼亚州圣巴巴拉度假时,我第一次发现了免费小图书馆的概念)”和“And because our home was already filled with mountainous piles of books, my husband wasn’t the least bit surprised when I suggested starting a Little Free Library of our own. (因为我们家里已经堆满了堆积如山的书,当我建议建立一个我们自己的免费图书馆时,我丈夫一点也不惊讶)”可知,度假期间的经历启发了作者创建这个免费小图书馆。故选B项。
    88. 推理判断题。由第二段中的“My love of reading dates back to 1970, when I studied in a three-room primary schoolhouse on a dirt road. One day, I accidentally came to the basement library and I was fascinated by the picture books. (我对阅读的热爱可以追溯到1970年,当时我在一条土路上的一所三室小学学习。一天,我偶然来到地下室图书馆,我被图画书迷住了)”可得出,作者对阅读的热情始于童年。故选B项。
    89. 推理判断题。由倒数二段中的“our Little Free Library began to include children’s stories. 故选A项。

A sunny morning was a great start to a cold day in a new city. I booked a taxi which, surprisingly, arrived in less than a minute, stopping at my feet.
Taxis aren’t known for their exact arrival in this city. It’s often a long wait and they always end up parking away from you, which often leads to a lot of conversations on the phone.
As I got in, I was warmly welcomed. The driver, Raju, started a conversation straight away as we set off. His conversation was full of polite English words and I could see that his vocabulary wasn’t too bad for someone who hadn’t gone beyond high school.
I was enjoying it. The only off-putting thing was the music. I asked him to turn it off and see if he liked the playlist on my phone. To my surprise, Raju knew names of the musicians and the singers. He told me his formative years were the early nineties — same as mine.
We enjoyed six old songs before we reached the destination. Raju thanked me for the music I played and refused to take any money. I knew there was no point in pressing him so I took out some chocolate and passed it to him. He was hesitant, but couldn’t say no.
After spending an hour in the market, I decided to push off. I booked a taxi and to my surprise, it was Raju again. He welcomed me with a happy smile, “The Earth is round.” I made him promise to accept the fare this time or I would cancel the booking. He agreed. I was glad there was no music playing in the taxi as I preferred to have a chat with him.
I learned Raju was a cancer survivor and the breadwinner of the family. I asked him if he needed help. He said no and told me that he would keep working hard as long as his body allowed.
Before saying goodbye, I asked if I could do anything for him. “Say something nice about taxi drivers,” he laughed and drove away.
    90. What problem does the taxi usually have in the city?

    93. What can we say about Raju according to the text?

Catherine White, 46, spent her teenage years washing cars in order to make ends meet and now she owns a £20 million business empire. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, she said, “My childhood was so unstable, so I always wanted and needed to be independent. I didn’t believe working for someone else gave me that and my future would still rely on someone else.”
At 24, Catherine started her first business from a desk in her sister’s art school but she was struggling with a panic disorder at the time and would find comfort in junk food, which led her to follow an unhealthy lifestyle. (2022·河南新乡·二模)One morning I noticed a woman sitting alone at the bus stop. She seemed not to go to work hurriedly. She wasn't going anywhere as well. Was she waiting for the bus? Did mall(商场)buses come this early when the stores wouldn't be open for hours? As I drove by.l heard a voice saying, “Give her a bottle of water”.
“She looks like she is sleeping. Why would I wake her? What is wrong with me? What is so hard about doing the right thing? It's just a bottle of water! ”
So I drove by her again and again. Finally, I pulled my car into a parking zone, stepping out with a bottle of water in one hand and a twenty-dollar bill in the other. Each step seemed to fill me with purpose and focus. No words can describe what happened between us at that moment. I thought I was bringing her a cold drink, but instead I was bringing her a hope she needed. We sat together for a while as she talked. She had a sad story to tell, but she was no longer sad. Before we parted, I grabbed all the cash I had in my purse and found more water in my car along with some snacks. We stood at the bus stop hugging and said our goodbyes.
I still have a thousand questions as to why I struggled to act. Why did it take me many circles around the mall and an argument with myself? I once wavered between helping her and ignoring her. All I know for sure is that while walking toward that woman at the bus stop, a miracle happened.
There are opportunities for us to love every day. Maybe our doubts keep us from acting. Maybe we don't want to take the risk or be uncomfortable. That day, I learned how love answers when asked and how love both gives and receives.
    98. What did the author think of the woman sitting alone at the beginning?
    A. She was short of sleep. B. She was full of curiosity
    C. She was a little strange. D. She was out of work.
    99. Why did the author drive by the woman over and over again?
    A. To improve the terribly poor driving skills. B. To evaluate whether to help her.
    C. To search for a parking space. D. To observe the poor woman
    100. What does the underlined word "wavered" in paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A. Hesitated. B. Disagreed. C. Balanced. D. Objected.
    101. What can we learn from the text?
    A. Love breaks down racial barriers. B. The wealth of life is action.
    C. Actions speak louder than words. D. The best act to love is taking action.

根据文章第一段“One morning I noticed a woman sitting alone at the bus stop. She seemed not to go to work hurriedly. She wasn't going anywhere as well. Was she waiting for the bus? Did mall(商场)buses come this early when the stores wouldn't be open for hours?(一天早上,我看到了一个女的独自一个人坐在公交站,她似乎也不急着去上班,好像也并不打算去哪里。她是在等车吗?商场公车会这么早就来吗?)”可知,作者看到这位女性的时候,心里充满了疑惑,不知道她坐在这里到底干什么,因此在作者看来,这位女性似乎很奇怪,故选C。

    100. 词义猜测题。根据文章第四段“I still have a thousand questions as to why I struggled to act. Why did it take me many circles around the mall and an argument with myself? 101. 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“There are opportunities for us to love every day. That day, I learned how love answers when asked and how love both gives and receives.(每天对我们来说有很多机会去爱。那天,我知道了当被需要时,爱是如何回应的以及爱是如何给予和接受的)”可知,本文主要讲述自己在犹豫后最终决定帮助那位女性,因此认为爱是需要付诸行动的,故选D。

    A Valuable Lesson for Life
Born in Nanchang city, Jiangxi, in 1961, Wu Aijia wanted to become a teacher since childhood. She applied to work as a teacher at the primary school in Niyang village after graduation.
When Wu, then 19, went to the village in Yichun city, Jiangxi province, to work as a village teacher in 1980, villagers were doubtful if she was going to stay long. After all, a number of voluntary teachers had arrived before, but all had left soon after.
Located in the mountains, the village was very poor and far from any town. Villagers had to hike in the mountains since there was no road. Wu was shocked by the poor conditions there. She had known the conditions were poor, but the reality was worse. The blackboard, door and windows were in a state of disrepair, some chairs had legs missing, and desks were pieced together at different heights.
Moreover, local people needed to go downhill to buy daily goods, and transport them back in their hands or balanced them across their shoulders. Wu Aijia had never walked uphill on a mountain road before, so she walked much more slowly than others, sometimes the wild boars and rabbits made her frightened.
But she gradually got used to her life there. At the beginning, she found many local people valued their sons far more than their daughters, and would not like to let them attend school. Wu went to their homes repeatedly and gradually persuaded them to send all their children to school. For those who could not afford the tuition, she spent her own money to help. She knows that education is an essential part of her efforts to help students escape poverty.
In 2012, Wu was assigned to work in another school in the town, but she refused and applied to go to the Baiyang village school, which is situated even more remotely in the mountains where she remains.
Over the years, more than 1,000 students of hers have left there and created a better life.
“Seeing them achieve progress, I’m so happy that I feel richer than any millionaire,” said Wu.

(2022·江苏·一模)Architecture is amazing. It has changed the way I look and interact with the world and my environment.   It has trained me to be hyper-sensitive (过度敏感) to the built environment, to recognize problems and find solutions that an untrained eye would never notice.
As much as I love this profession, it is very easy to get lost in architecture. I get so focused that I have forgotten about everything else. Luckily my passion for cycling kept me sane (清醒的) while I was becoming an architect. I faced a lot of obstacles and challenges taking a bicycle ride across the United States. Looking back, cycling across the America was actually one of the smartest things I ever did.
I have actually bicycled across the continental USA twice; East to west. Atlantic Ocean to Pacific Ocean, both times. Bicycling across America isn’t as hard as you think.
I rode alone on my first trip in 2005 from Virginia Beach to the coast of Florence, Oregon. In the end it was 4,547 miles over the course of 77 days.
I left for the second trip in 2007 with my two best friends from Bar Harbor, Maine to Portland, Oregon, which was a 4,886 mile ride over 90 days. At that time, I fell in love with the idea of leaving the east coast behind, starting a whole new life and career in a new city. I ended up in Portland. After arriving in town on a bike, I eventually found a job, a place to live and an amazing dog.
I share all this not to convince anyone to go biking across America, but only to share how doing this has changed my life. Architecture has given me a wonderful life and career but it isn’t everything. Thankfully I have also been very passionate about: my friends, traveling, bicycles, punk rock, technology, the internet, my dog, and even yoga. My architecture background has definitely sweetened my relationship with all those things.
Becoming an architect is a noble pursuit, but you should keep pursuing everything else that you are passionate about. It will enhance your architecture career and ultimately make you a more interesting person, which in my opinion is really more important than being another silly architect.
    106. What’s the advantage of cycling according to the author?
    A. Changing his negative attitude to architecture.
    B. Keeping himself focused on his career all the time.
    C. Enabling him to find solutions without training.
    D. Making him a much better architect and person.
    107. What does the author think of his two cross-country bike trips?
    A. They are harder than what he expected before.
    B. They show the benefits of riding with friends.
    C. They give him some extraordinary experiences.
    D. They guarantee him a new life and career in Portland.
    108. What can be inferred from Paragraph 6?
    A. Don’t get completely lost in your hobbies.
    B. Don’t abandon hobbies for your profession.
    C. Don’t feel ashamed of stopping your hobbies.
    D. Don’t weigh your family against your profession.
    109. In the last paragraph, the author reminds us to ________.
    A. take up the pursuit of becoming an architect
    B. find what we are really passionate about
    C. appreciate other people’s good intentions
    D. avoid our career taking over other pursuits

根据第六段的“Architecture has given me a wonderful life and career but it isn’t everything. (2022·陕西咸阳·二模)Wang Fang, a Suzhou native, has given her heart and soul to Kunqu Opera. Wang, who has twice won the Plum Performance Award-China’s top award for theater and opera performances — started to learn the traditional art form from a young age.
Born with a sweet voice, Wang loved to sing and dance and was selected by the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Troupe when she was in middle school. However, her parents refused the troupe’s invitation, insisting that she should concentrate on her studies. After members of the troupe visited the parents repeatedly, Wang’s parents finally agreed.
Learning the traditional art form was never easy, she started to learn how to pronounce words, sing them lyrically and make gestures gently. At first, she had to spend extra time practicing kung fu movements. Years later, Wang used the word “unimaginable” to describe how hard the days were when she first learned Kunqu. She was soaked (浸泡) in sweat when practicing movements in summer, while in winter she often had chilblains (冻疮) on her hands. “But I was determined at the time. No matter how difficult, I always got up early the next morning to practice,” Wang recalls.
Wang says she did not love Kunqu at first, but in her early 20s, when she watched the show Peony Pavilion performed by Zhang Jiqing, a master of the art form, it clicked. “I was shocked,” Wang says. “Her every movement was full of elegance. Each of her lines and songs was perfect. I was struck by the beauty of Kunqu for the first time, and it has stayed with me since.”
“I always believe that ‘Not everything is meant to be, but everything is worth a try.’ First you must be a dreamer, then a doer, and only then can you be a master. I believe in this order — that it should be this way and that I am this way.” Wang once said in an interview. Now, Wang has become a master of Kunqu. Her performances have impressed generations of audiences and helped to promote the art form among young people.

通过文章第三段“Learning the traditional art form was never easy (学习传统的艺术形式从来都不是一件容易的事)”以及“She was soaked in sweat when practicing movements in summer, while in winter she often had chilblains on her hands. (夏天练习的时候,她浑身都是汗,冬天的时候,她的手上经常会出现冻疮)”可推知,本段主要说明了王芳在学习昆曲方面付出了巨大的努力。故选A项。
通过文章第四段“Wang says she did not love Kunqu at first, but in her early 20s, when she watched the show Peony Pavilion performed by Zhang Jiqing, a master of the art form, it clicked. (王芳说她一开始并不喜欢昆曲,但在她20岁出头的时候,当她观看了由昆曲大师张继青表演的《牡丹亭》时,她就爱上了昆曲)”可推知,是大师的精彩表演改变了王芳对昆曲的态度。故选C项。
    113. 推理判断题。通过文章最后一段“I always believe that ‘Not everything is meant to be, but everything is worth a try.’ First you must be a dreamer, then a doer, and only then can you be a master. I believe in this order — that it should be this way and that I am this way. (我一直相信,不是每件事都是命中注定的,但每件事都值得一试。首先你必须是一个梦想家,然后是一个实干家,只有这样你才能成为一个大师。我相信这个顺序——它应该是这样的,而我也是这样做的)”可推知,王芳认为,只有自己脚踏实地,一步一个脚印,循序渐进地努力才能获得成功。B项“想要走的高,就要靠自己”符合王芳在采访中所表达的观点和展现的态度。故选B项。

(2022·北京石景山·一模)I remember driving to Palm Springs from San Diego two Thanksgivings ago. None of us pictured an icy blizzard (暴风雪)on our California vacation, but one hour into the drive, the first snowflake fell. My eyes lit up. I’d missed snow. Seeing it land on a prickly cactus made my tears well up. How I longed for cold Minnesota, my hometown.
As the altitude rose, the storm got fierce. It wasn’t long before we had no choice but to pull over. As our car slid to a stop, I looked into the distance. A line of cars as long as the Mississippi River were lined up.
Just then, a car came from behind, suddenly changing the direction to avoid hitting our car. The driver, an old man, slammed on the brakes and his car drifted across the path. It didn’t take us too long to realize his car was awfully near the edge of the mountain and slowly creeping more and more towards the side of the cliff.
Suddenly, 10 people who were sitting in their cars leapt out. From the car window, I watched an inspiring scene. Four people took the chains that protected their tires off their cars and put them on the old man’s tires. One person shoveled the snow out from his tires and tried to break the ice with his boot. Just as the old man’s car and all his belongings were about to be lost off the edge of the cliff, people stepped up and let their kind hearts override the snowstorm.
Though it was minus 30 degrees centigrade, my heart was as warm as ever. This act of kindness just reminded me how thankful I am for people and moments like these.
    114. Why did the author cry when he saw the snow?
    A. He felt a little homesick.
    B. He disliked the bad weather.
    C. He was surprised to see the snow.
    D. He was anxious about the traffic delay.
    115. What happened to the old man's car?
    A. Its braking system failed.
    B. It was about to drop from the cliff.
    C. It ran into the author’s car.
    D. It lost control due to the sudden speeding.
    116. Which of the following can best describe the people involved?
    A. Reliable and modest.
    B. Kind and easy-going.
    C. Brave and cooperative.
    D. Enthusiastic and ambitious.
根据第一段的“Seeing it land on a prickly cactus made my tears well up. How I longed for cold Minnesota, my hometown.(看到它落在多刺的仙人掌上,我热泪盈眶。我多么渴望寒冷的明尼苏达州——我的家乡)”可知,作者看到雪花落泪是因为思念自己的家乡。故选A。
根据第三段的“It didn’t take us too long to realize his car was awfully near the edge of the mountain and slowly creeping more and more towards the side of the cliff.(没过多久,我们就意识到他的车非常接近山的边缘,慢慢地越来越靠近悬崖的一边)”和第四段的”Just as the old man’s car and all his belongings were about to be lost off the edge of the cliff(就在老人的车和他所有的财产即将从悬崖边上消失的时候)”可知,老人的车快要从悬崖边掉下去了。故选B。
根据最后一段的“Four people took the chains that protected their tires off their cars and put them on the old man’s tires. One person shoveled the snow out from his tires and tried to break the ice with his boot. Just as the old man’s car and all his belongings were about to be lost off the edge of the cliff, people stepped up and let their kind hearts override the snowstorm.(四个人把保护轮胎的链子从车上取下来,戴在老人的轮胎上。一个人铲掉轮胎上的雪,试图用靴子把冰撬开。就在老人的车和他所有的财产即将从悬崖边上消失的时候,人们站出来,让他们的善良的心战胜了暴风雪)”可知,人们冒着暴风雪和有可能被老人的车拖下悬崖的危险,分工配合,及时止住快要掉下悬崖的车。由此推知,他们是勇敢并且有合作精神的。故选C。
