    A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

    【答案】
As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Father’s appearing was like a savior to the two children. Under the guidance of their father, they took positive actions and started all over again. They made the bread and then went on cooking porridge. Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to success. It was all right this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were!
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect. The children said loudly, “Happy Mother’s Day!” Mother hugged them tightly and kissed them again and again.

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last week I was in the supermarket. I got to the front of the queue and put my groceries through the checkout. When it was time to pay, I realized that I left my bank card at home, and I didn’t have enough money with me. All I had was a ten-dollar bill and some coins in my wallet. I was short by at least five dollars, but I needed to buy most of the items.
I started to apologize to the checkout assistant. “I’m sorry,”I said. “Can I put these things back? And then I think I’ll just take these. Oh no, I need that. Rather put this through.”
A lady was standing behind me, next in the queue. “Excuse me, sir,” she said.
“Oh, I’m so sorry,” I replied. “I am holding you up. ”
“Of course not. I know how you feel. This happens to all of us at some point. Now let me just use my card to pay the balance for you and you can be on your way. ”
I was surprised by her kindness, embarrassed though. No matter how much I insisted otherwise, she was determined to help me. Afterward, I thanked her and asked for her telephone number to get in touch and pay her back.
“No,” she said. “I’d rather you paid it forward.”
“Pay it forward” means to do a good deed for the next person in need. In the Italian city of Naples, for example, there is a long tradition of paying for a coffee for another person. There, wealthier people pay a “caffè sospeso”(suspended coffee) for others, which is then given by the waiter to the next person who cannot afford a cup of coffee. Also, someone who experiences good luck buys two cups but only receives one. The other goes to another person who needs it. This, according to Benjamin Franklin, is “a trick of mine for doing a deal of good with a little money.”
The next day, I saw two firefighters eating at the restaurant where I worked as a waiter. They seemed to have just finished a tough job because they both looked very exhausted and hungry.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
I recalled the lady’s words. And I thought it was time to pay her kindness forward, by buying the two men a meal and two cups of coffee to thank them for all that they had done. So I paid for the bill and wrote down my blessings as well as “pay it forward” on the back of the bill. The firefighters were confused at first, but upon listening to me explaining everything, they accepted my offer pleasantly.
A few days later, I got a surprise. One of the firefighters posted the picture of the bill and the message from me online, with a comment that explained his experience in the restaurant where I worked and encouraged his friends to do what I had done. Over the next few days, I noticed many people sharing their stories in the comment section about how they “pay it forward”. While viewing those heartfelt comments, I realized that the good deed was paid forward!

    “Tiki!” I yelled desperately.
Our dog, Tiki, had slipped out the door earlier that evening. Now I was searching the neighborhood trying to find him. My seven-year-old son, Jordan, was following behind.
I was worried about Jordan. He had lost so much already. The last few months had been difficult. After getting divorced, I could no longer afford our house in Indianapolis. Jordan and I moved in with my parents in northern Indiana. Jordan missed his friends and his old school. Losing his childhood dog was the last thing he needed.
We called out Tilki’s name until it was completely dark. We were forced to return home, empty-handed.
“Mom, it’s all new here. What if Tiki can’t find Grandma’s house?” asked Jordan. “It’s okay,” I said. “He’s wearing his collar and dog tag (标牌).” It was at that moment that I realized Tiki’s tag listed our address and phone number in Indianapolis. If someone found him, they’d have no way to reach me. I felt sick to my stomach.
The next day, I kept asking around to see if anyone had spotted him. But after two weeks, I began to lose hope.
One afternoon, I found Jordan crying in his room. “At school, we had to write about our wishes,” he said. “I wrote, ‘I wish my dog would come home.’ Mrs. Rush hung our papers in the hallway. Every time I see my paper, I feel sad.” My heart broke for him.
So later that week, when he put on a stained shirt from his old school back in Indianapolis, I just let it slide. If it helped him get through the school day, that was more important than looking put-together.
When he got home that afternoon, he told me the school custodian (管理员) had asked him about his shirt. “I told him we just moved here from Indianapolis,” said Jordan.
The next day, I got a call from Mrs. Rush. “I’m calling on behalf of our school custodian,” she began. “His grown daughter found a dog a few weeks ago, and he thinks it might be yours.”

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
Mrs. Rush didn’t know the details, but she passed on the daughter’s phone number. Pinching the little scrap with the “possible-Tiki” phone number, I was hopeful mingled with fear——What if it’s not our Tiki? I still dialed anyway. Seconds later, the phone was connected. “He’s a small white dog and his tag says TIKI,” the lady on the phone said. Then we reached an agreement to have a check in person. Jordan and I piled into the car and rushed over. Minutes later, Jordan was sitting on the floor in the custodian’s daughter’s kitchen, laughing while Tiki licked his face.
“What made your dad think the dog was ours?” I asked curiously. She told me that she’d mentioned to him that she’d found a little dog. A few weeks later, he was mopping the hallway when he spotted the kids’ latest essays. He paused to read Jordan’s. Could it be the same dog? His daughter said no, the dog had Indianapolis tags with a disconnected phone number. “But then he noticed Jordan’s Indianapolis T-shirt and put two and two together?” I said, connecting the dots. She nodded. That night, Jordan thanked everything for bringing Tiki home. And I thanked everything for prompting me to let Jordan wear the ratty old T-shirt that made the reunion possible.

As Christmas decorations appeared in town, our parents called my two younger brothers and me together. At first, I thought someone had died, because I had never seen my parents look so sad. My brothers and I stood waiting for the awful news.
Mom hugged me as she murmured, “Christmas is going to be different this year. We won't be having a tree or presents. We can barely afford food.”Dad, resting on the couch, beckoned (招手示意) the boys into his arms.“Things will change when I get back to work.”
My family was poorer than dirt. Dad, the only bread-earner in our family, worked in a coal mine. However, soon after returning to work at the end of a long strike, Dad was hurt in a rock fall that broke bones in his foot. Lying on the couch with the swollen foot high on pillows, he didn't talk or smile much. There was little to smile about. No work, no income.
At nine years old, I mothered my younger brothers: Rodney, aged six, and Stevie, three. We shared a small bedroom. That night, after our parents’ announcement, we talked.
Rodney began. “Em, did you see how sad Mommy and Daddy looked? I thought Mommy was gonna cry.
“Me, too. Daddy's foot’s … this big” whispered Stevie, holding out his arms.
“Yeah..We're in hard times," I said.“It makes Mommy and Daddy sad."
“But we don't have to be sad," I added, hoping to brighten the mood.
“Since there are still several weeks to go, maybe we can do something to cheer them up," I said with overdone enthusiasm. The boys proposed, “We can take the money from our piggy bank...earn some more..and surprise them with gifts!"
“I can run errands(跑腿) for Aunt Em and neighbors to earn money," I offered.
“Yeah," Rodney added, “I and Stevie can return bottles and save the deposit money... instead of buying candy!" He pushed Stevie gently with his elbow.
    “Yeah!”Stevie clutched his hands together.
    We had a plan!
Until they nodded off, I coached my little brothers (especially Stevie) in ways to guard our secret. “Don't talk about it during the day."

    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
We awoke in the morning, transforming from sad children to the secret agents on an important mission! The following weeks saw me dashing home from school each day determined to earn a penny. I was usually greeted by secret winks and grins- one with a missing tooth, and the other with tiny, straight teeth- both assuring me our secret was safe. A few days before Christmas, we gleefully went shopping. We bought Mom a new apron, and for Dad, a pair of leather slippers. The night of Christmas Eve seemed endless. I awoke occasionally, or one of my brothers woke me asking, “How long till daylight?”
On Christmas morning, we hurried into the living room and handed the gifts to Mommy and Daddy. Surprised and stunned, they showered us with tons of confusing questions. “How did you..?” “Where did you..?” “Who gave you...?"" As we explained how we'd schemed, earned and saved our money, their faces relaxed into expressions of astonishment. Then, with glistening tears, Mom and Dad wrapped us three into their arms. On this special Christmas morning, with the five of us hugging, talking, laughing and listening with fresh affection and gratitude, I understood that rich or poor, we would keep together and be happy in one another.

On a hot September afternoon, Peter and his friend Isabel were on their way to the library. When they passed by Tubman park, Isabel suggested cutting through it to get to the library. As they entered the park, the sight of the swings (秋千) and the merry-go-round brought back a flood of memories of their childhood spent there. But now everything looked so old, sad, and dirty. Litter lay on the ground next to an overflowing trash bin. There were still young schoolchildren playing there but they had to avoid the trash that littered the playground. A little boy told them that the city took the other trash cans away and the remaining one never got emptied often.
As they headed toward the library, the two high school students wrinkled their forehead. In the library, they encountered Mrs. Evans, their kind-hearted fifth-grade teacher, retired yet still passionate. Mrs. Evans listened as Isabel and Peter eagerly explained what they’d seen. Finally, she recommended them to go to the City Hall to voice their concerns.
The next day, Isabel and Peter went into the building of the City Hall but were met with an impatient officer. They were informed that the city couldn’t help with their problem due to a tight budget. Discouraged, they left and turned to Mrs. Evans for help.
Under her guidance, they decided to ask Go Green, a non-profit organization whose goal is to protect the environment, for help. “This group is good at raising money for projects just like yours, ” said Mrs. Evans. She promised to arrange them to present their ideas to Go Green. Hearing this, their face lit up.
Two main tasks remained ahead: researching ways to clean up the park and preparing a convincing presentation. As Isabel was good at researching while Peter always had a talent for speaking, they cooperated quite well. Isabel learned from a science magazine that a new type of trash bin can squeeze the trash down without being emptied often, which saves time, money, and energy. Based on this, Peter practiced his presentation over and over again.

    【答案】
A week later, Peter stood nervously at the back of the hall where Go Green was meeting. Finally, it was time for him to do the presentation. Standing in front of several experts from Go Green, Peter was nervous in fear of screwing things up. But unbelievably, when he began to speak, everything went so smoothly. His voice was clear and influential, and his speech was logical and well-organized. Peter ended his presentation with a deep bow and went out to wait for Go Green’s decision.
After the meeting, Isabel excitedly told Peter the good news. Their ideas were approved and Go Green agreed to provide the money they needed to purchase the trash bin. Peter smiled. It meant not only their efforts paid off, but also Tubman park would restore its cleanness and tidiness. Peter and Isabel decided to tell Mrs. Evans this good news first and then worked out the next step they needed to take.

I could tell by her face that she was Very anxious. “Mrs. Lim, is there something wrong?” I asked as I glanced at the wall lock. It was almost I am. Mrs. Lim was one of my neighbors who lived down the street with her old, sick husband. I immediately thought that Mrs. Lim needed help.
“It's my husband. I think he's having a heart attack. Can you help me?” she blurted out(脱口而出). Her eyes filled with tears. With lightning speed, I changed my clothes. Then, I followed Mrs. Lim to her house. The whole house was a little musty. As this was my first visit to the Lims' residence, I had a quick glance around the living room. There were wall panels covered with watercolor landscapes, carvings, and cross-stitch(十字绣)pieces. Along the hallway leading to the kitchen was Mr. Lim, sitting in an armchair. He appeared to be out of breath. With Mrs. Lim's help, I managed to carry him to the porch where their car was parked. When we finally managed to get him inside the car, I drove to the hospital.
We rushed him to the emergency and casualty ward(临时病室).The doctor on duty informed us that Mr. Lim had suffered a mild stroke. Mr. Lim was admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU). Mrs. Lim and I looked after him all night long. It was then that Mrs. Lim asked me to contact her son and convey the news. I never knew that Mr. and Mrs. Lim had children. I could not recall a time when they ever mentioned a son. I tried to contact the son at the given address, but I was told that he had moved to another town with his wife and children. I could see the pain in Mrs. Lim's face as I told her the news.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
As I was driving home, I told myself that I would call my own parents. I had not contacted them for almost a month and my conscience bit me. I had always thought that I had so much work to do and couldn’t spare enough time to visit them. They had devoted most of their time to looking after me for a good part of their lives. I was sobbing terribly all the way home, ashamed of my neglect. Maybe they were suffering from the same scene as my neighbors.

It was Hoppy’s first day at his new school. He didn’t know anyone yet, but he had seen some cool kids at the beach during the summer.
Billy, one of the cool kids, sat down next to Hoppy at break and started to have a talk. They discovered they shared the same interest, surfing, but Hobby went to the beach with his dad, instead of hanging out there with friends, which was laughed at by Billy. He invited Hoppy to the beach with his friends. Hoppy nodded, happy to have a new friend.
After school Hoppy met Billy and his three friends at the school gate, one of whom tried to punch Hoppy’s stomach as a way of “greetings”. While walking on the street, they met a boy, having trouble with his bike. Billy and his friends started to tease the boy. The boy looked up uneasily about this interest in him and his flat-tyre.
Billy nudged the boy so that he fell on the kerb (侧石) and broke his glasses. Billy and his friends ran off down the street, laughing. However, Hoppy just stood there.
The boy, Gerald, sat on the kerb, crying now. He looked up at Hoppy and begged him not to hit him. Hoppy smiled and said, “I’ve never beaten anyone up. Only bullies (霸凌) and cowards do that. Really strong people keep their fists in their pockets. That’s what my dad says.” Gerald seemed relieved. They walked to Gerald’s house, talking about going to the beach together. Their friendship grew.
One Sunday, Hoppy went to the beach with his father. Billy and his friends were there. Billy called out to Hoppy, complaining about helping Gerald. He spoke in an unpleasant tone, saying his dad was his babysitter. Hoppy smiled and ignored him.
Gerald arrived to see Hoppy. When he saw the boys, his heart sank. Billy and his gang surrounded him. “Hoppy’s tricked me,” thought Gerald, and he started to walk away. Billy ran after Gerald and tripped him. Gerald fell onto the sand, but picked himself up and asked them to leave him alone. However, Billy didn’t stop and tripped Gerald again.
    Paragraph 1:
This time Gerald managed a brave smile as he got up and faced the boys.

    【答案】
    Paragraph 1:
This time Gerald managed a brave smile as he got up and faced the boys. The boys were a little shocked to see Gerald smile. “It’s wrong to bully me like this, and if you don’t stop, I’m going to call the police,” Gerald said firmly as he clenched his fist and shook it in the boys’ faces. At Gerald’s words, Billy and his group of friends, resentful but fearful of the police, went away. Gerald, relieved to see them go, sat down on the ground, his hands on his injured knees, which had grazed against the ground when Billy tripped him.
    Paragraph 2:
Hoppy and his dad came up beside Gerald, but Gerald said to them, “Why don’t you go with your friends?” “I’ve never been friends with them,”Hoppy explained. “They bully people. I despise that.” He went on: “I’m sorry. I wasn’t brave enough to come out and help you.”   Gerald forgave Hoppy. Hoppy and his father then took Gerald home, where they attended to his wounds. Hoppy’s mother made a delicious dinner for them, and she was glad that Hoppy had made such a brave and kind friend as Gerald. Gerald was proud of himself for standing up to the bullies.
