    A new UBC Okanagan study finds children nt nly gain the benefits f wrking with therapy (治疗) dgs – they enjy it t.
    “While we d frequently see children imprve in therapy dg prgrams, we didn’t have data t supprt that they enjyed the time as well,” says Nicle Harris, wh cnducted this research while a master’s student in the Schl f Educatin.
    The research saw 22 children frm the Okanagan Bys and Girls Club take part in a series f sessins t help them build their scial skills. Over six weeks, the children were accmpanied by therapy dgs as they cmpleted lessns. Each week the children were taught a new skill, such as intrducing themselves r giving directins t thers. The children wuld first practice with their
    assigned therapy dg befre running thrugh the exercise with the rest f the grup. In the final phase, the children, accmpanied by their new furry friend, wuld practice their new skills with university students lcated in the building.
    “Therapy dgs are ften able t reach children and facilitate their grwth in surprising ways. We saw evidence f this in the scial skills f children when they were paired with a therapy dg,” says Dr. Jhn-Tyler Binfet, assciate prfessr in the Schl f Educatin and directr f BARK. “The dgs helped create a nn-threatening climate while the children were learning these new skills. By interacting with them, the children’s mds imprved and their engagement in their lessns increased.” While the children were learning and practising their new skills, the research team cllected data.
    At the end f the six weeks, Harris interviewed eight children, aged 5 t 11 years ld, wh regularly attended the sessins. Each child indicated the scial skill-training prgram with therapy dgs was an enjyable and psitive experience and the dgs were a meaningful and essential part f the prgram.
