We See Limited Faces on Facebook
Nicole Ellison, PhD, Assistant Professor of Michigan State University
I believe the benefits provided by social network sites such as Facebook have made us better off as a society and as individuals, and that, as they continue to be adopted by more diverse populations, we will see an increase in their utility. Anecdotal(轶事的) evidence of positive outcomes from these technologies such as political activities organized via Facebook or jobs found through LinkedIn-is well- known. Social technologies never have predictable and absolute positive or negative effects, which is why social scientists dread questions like these. In considering the effects of social network sites, it is clear that there are many challenges to work through-the increasing commercialization of this space, the need to construct strong privacy protections for users, and safety issues-but I believe the benefits we receive as a society provided by these tools far outweigh the risks.
Krung-Tag Lee, PhD, Professor of Management at Kyungpook National University (South Korea)
Social networking sites are used to facilitate studying, forming new relationships, maintaining preexisting personal ties, engaging in self-presentation, looking at photos and user profiles of other people, commenting on messages posted by others, avoiding boredom, passing the time, and procrastinating. These activities help individuals reduce loneliness and accumulate personal social capital, including emotional satisfaction, access to information, increasing one's well-being, and so on. When people use social networking sites, they tend to establish strong ties online, and strong ties support high quality friendships and social companionship, which ultimately enhance their well-being.
Susan Greenfield, Professor of University of Oxford
Social networking sites might tap into the basic brain systems for delivering pleasurable experience. However, these experiences are devoid of cohesive narrative and long-term significance. As a consequence, the mid-21st century mind might almost be infantilised, characterised by short attention spans, sensationalism, inability to empathise and a shaky sense of identity.
21. What is this article talking about?
A. YouTube. B. Instagram. C.Facebook. D. WhatsApp.
22. Which of the following is the point of PhD Nicole Ellison?
A. Social networking sites are beneficial.
B. Social networking sites are harmful.
C. Social networking sites are both beneficial and harmful.
D. Social networking sites are exciting.
23. Where does the Professor Krung-Tag Lee from?
A. Management at Kyungpook National University.
B. Michigan State University.
C. University of Oxford.
D. University of Cambridge.

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all constructed boats and left. Except for Love.
When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help.
Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said, “Richness, can you take me with you?” Richness answered, “No. I can’t. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you.”
Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. “Vanity, please help me!”

Bangkok(曼谷) is trying to evict(驱逐) its street hawkers(小贩)
Snails and fermented(发酵) fish, bamboo shavings and cured buffalo skin: these are among the delights(高兴) that Wannee Junrut has laid out on trays at her stall in Lao Market in Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, every morning for the past 28 years. Hawking is the family business: Ms Wannee’s mother tended the stall before her, and her children are also in the trade.
They may soon need to find other work, however. The local government is threatening to demolish(拆除) their stall.
When the Thai army seized power in 2014, it vowed to bring order to the streets of Bangkok. Tens of thousands of hawkers ply their trade(做买卖) on the city’s roads, selling not just food but everything from clothing to cleaning products. Bangkok’s local government reckons they are a nuisance, responsible for all manner of ills including bad hygiene and obstructing traffic.
In 2014 it launched a campaign called “returning walkways to the public” and started evicting hawkers, licence or no licence. It claims to have since shooed away(驱赶) some 12,000 vendors, nearly 60% of the total.
Hawkers are “a health-and-safety issue”, says Ton Panon, a property developer. He does not want them banned from the city — “They are a way of life here” — but wishes they could be relocated to designated food courts and markets.
Vendors will suffer if the stalls vanish. So, too, will ordinary Bangkokians. The city’s residents get nearly half of their weekly meals from street vendors, suggests one survey. Many stalls cater to people with low incomes.
28. What did Wannee put out at his stall?
A. Snails and fermented fish.
B. Bamboo shavings.
C. Cured buffalo skin.
D. All of the above.
28. Why did the local government threaten to demolish their stalls?
A.The government vowed to bring order to the streets of Bangkok.
B. The government thinks they are bad.
C. Stalls caused poor health.
D. Stalls caused traffic jam.
30. What does the underlined word “vendors” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. developer. B. stalls. C. hawker. D. government.
31. If the stall disappears, what will ordinary Bangkokians suffer?
A. They get nearly half of their weekly meals from hawkers.
B. They get nearly half of their weekly meals from hawkers, and low incomes can also be satisfied.
C. They get a whole week meals from hawkers.
D. Many stalls cater to people with low incomes.

29. 推理判断题。根据第三段“When the Thai army seized power in 2014, it vowed to bring order to the streets of Bangkok.”当泰国军队在 2014 年夺取政权时,曾承诺要给曼谷的街道带来秩序,而现在小贩们在街上摆摊造成了很大的问题,故选A。
30. 词义猜测题。根据第四段“In 2014 it launched a campaign called "returning walkways to the public and……”在2014 年,它发起了一项名为“将人行道还给公众”的运动,再根据“shoo away驱赶”可猜测被赶走的是小贩,故选C。
31. 推理判断题。根据最后一段内容可知,一项调查显示,该市居民每周的膳食中有近一半来自街头小贩。许多摊位满足了低收入人群。故选B。

Do you know that forests cover an estimated 38 percent of the total land surface of the European Union (EU)? And that these extensive areas covered with trees and underbrush need to be protected so they can continue to do good for the environment for the next generation? Now the EU has just come up with is ambitious new “Forest Strategy”.
Forests can fight against climate change and prevent biodiversity loss. They can reduce the impacts of climate change by cooling down cities, protecting us from heavy flooding, and reducing drought impacts. They are valuable ecosystems that are home to a major part of the world's plants and animals. But forests also improve our health and well-being through functions like water regulation, erosion (侵蚀) control and air purification. And they serve as ideal settings for “recreation, relaxation and learning, as well as securing livelihoods”.
This new European- wide forest conservation vision takes in an impressive commitment to plant a minimum of three billion additional trees over the next decade. This is an ambitious plan but a long overdue. One because forests have been battered by severe weather and human impacts, particularly the demand for wood over the last ten years. As the EU Observer puts it, “extreme weather events and the increasing demand for forest services and products, driven by wood-based bioenergy and international trade, have accelerated tree cover loss in the last decade.”
This EU strategy takes into account the complexity of forest sustainability. Observation, knowledge exchange, ongoing monitoring and close cooperation between public and private organizations and individuals are also key elements in this new continent- wide forest protection strategy.
This is a future- focused blueprint, designed to protect these precious green areas, and ensure that the trees and greenery are here to stay!
32. Why are two questions raised in the beginning?
A. To tell us the EU's forest coverage.
B. To call on people to protect forests.
C. To explain the reason for the strategy.
D.To encourage more forest expansion.
33. What does the author intend to show in paragraph 2?
A. The urgency of the strategy.
B. The importance of forests.
C. The background of the strategy.
D. The environmental role of forests.
34. What does the underlined word “battered” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Preserved. B. Controlled. C. Removed. D. Damaged.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Planting Trees for the World
B. Irreplaceable Benefits of Forests
C. EU's Action to Protect the Forests
D. Taking Forests into the Future

Dear Neo,
I hear that you are planning a sightseeing trip to China. Well, I have just returned from a place I am sure you will enjoy-- Xi’an, the capital of Shanxi Province, and one of the most wonderful tourist destinations in the country.
Xi’an was the capital of thirteen dynasties, so the place is full of ancient relics. I spent one week there, and didn’t have the chance to see even half of them. The major attractions are the Terracotta Warriors and Horses, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Banpo Neolithic Village.
Xi’an boasts plenty of modern hotels and restaurants, but they are not cheap, so you need to take this into account. If you visit, I hope you will have as much fun as I had.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)

He has loved football since he was a child. But something happened at the age of 10, but it gave him a great blow. He was training for the Newell’s Old Boys.
One afternoon, his team played football with another team of the same age. Several times, his teammates passed the ball to his feet, but due to excessive tension, he closed his eyes when facing the goal. As a result, the ball always wiped the goal. Because of his many missed opportunities, his team was defeated miserably in the end. At the end of the game, he closed his eyes painfully.
In the dressing room, many partners put their fingers to their mouths and booed him with ridicule. The shoes he changed were also taken away by one of his companions, spit in them, and proudly show them to other friends, and nickname him “smelly shoe king” on the spot. He was so miserable that he thought that maybe he was not good at playing football at all, or he should give up.
He bowed his head and was upset. He walked alone on his way home and couldn’t help crying.
Then he saw a frog looking at himself with tears in his eyes. He was a little angry and mischievously threw a bubble of urine at the frog. But he found that the humiliated frog kept a posture and still looked at himself with round eyes with no dodge(躲闪) or escape in the process .
He had some doubts and some losses. Unhappily, he returned home and told his father what had happened today. His father told him that if a person wants to, he must face up to injustice and accept failure like the high-profile frog. That night, his heart was shocked and his inner dream began to revive. He felt that the humiliated and unyielding frog was his teacher.

【范文】
Paragraph 1:
He secretly vowed: I will also work hard in adversity, become a great player like Maradona, climb the peak of football and become the world’s footballer! From that day on, he played football for more than 8 hours a day and kept studying and training in an orderly manner. He can face the criticism of the coach and the criticism of his teammates calmly, hold up his head confidently and go his own way step by step. He has only one goal in his eyes: the goal.
Paragraph 2:
His name is Lionel Messi. He is now a striker of Barcelona and an international of Argentina. He is affectionately called “new Maradona” by fans. He has fulfilled his oath with almost perfect skills. On December 1, 2009, Messi won the 2009 European golden ball award by beating Ronaldo with the results of leading Barcelona to win the La Liga, King’s cup and Champions League treble in 2008-2009 season. 20 days later, at the 19th FIFA awards ceremony held in Zurich, Lionel Messi smiled to the end, won the title of “World Player of the year 2009” and held the golden trophy. He smiled and said: “don’t close your eyes to play football, keep your eyes on your goal. As long as you work hard, your dream will not be far away.”
