Vincent van Gogh was born in 1853 in Zundert in the south of the Netherlands. He was unlucky to live only for 37 years and to discover his love for art at the age of 27. Therefore, he worked as an artist for only 10 years of his life.
During the Enlightenment Age, emphasis on literature, philosophy, science, fine arts and music became more widespread especially with the growing middle class. This means that Vincent van Gogh had lived in a flourishing artistic movement, which was supposed to help him succeed as an artist and become rich. On the contrary, he did not win fame as an artist. Although Vincent painted 900 paintings and more than 1,100 drawings, his works remained unknown and unsold and his brother Theo supported him financially during his lifetime.
Perhaps one of the reasons for his failure as an artist is his clumsy(笨拙的) behavior when he suffered from mental illness. Another reason is his short-tempered nature and rudeness which most of the time brought him bloody fights with his fellow Gauguin that ended up with cutting off Vincent's ears. Moreover, he was always dirty and not well-dressed, which made people avoid dealing with him and buying his artistic works. Furthermore, his poor health gave more blows to his life and caused an early death to such a great artist. But now in our age, his magnificent painting (Portrait of Dr: Gachet) is sold around 150 million dollars at auction.
Vincent van Gogh is just an example of the talented people who failed in their pursuit of glory.
4.What can we learn about Vincent before he was 27?
A.He showed no love for art. B.He enjoyed staying alone.
C.He had a great interest in art. D.He spent much time painting.

    A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
6.Why didn't people like to trade with Vincent?
A.He was in a mess. B.He became angry easily.

7.What does the story mainly tell us?
A.Good manners are more important than talents.
B.A seed planted in darkness may bloom later.
C.Failure is the mother of success.
D.One is never too old to learn.

Twenty-five young musicians from around the world have come to California to train and perform this month. They will take part in an international program called iPalpiti. The name comes from the Italian word for heartbeats.
Eduard Schmieder is the program's conductor and musical director. Schmieder and his wife started the program in 1997 with help from violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin.
This year, the musicians come from 19 countries, including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Israel and Italy. Schmieder notes some of the musicians are from countries that are at war with each other. The musicians taking part in the program range in age from their late teens to their 30s.
Schmieder said they include winners of major music competitions. Peter Rainer is a violin player from Germany. He serves as concertmaster, the link between the musicians and conductor. " Everyone has their own opinion of music, how to play every composition. It's very interesting to interact with everybody, to play together and to create one opinion for everybody. "
This year, the festival focuses on music from the 1600s to the 1900s. But cello player Franciaco Vila of Ecuador said the music has no geographic boundaries Vila added that the musicians get to know more about each other as they perform great music.
"It's interesting to see where we intersect(交集) , how many things we have in common. And also the music world is quite small, so you're only one person away from knowing everyone else" Can Sakul said the musicians who have taken part in the training and festival make up a big family. He added that he is proud to be a part of it.

Anyone watching the Winter Olympics in Beijing, China over the last few days will have seen lots and lots of snow ----– man-made snow. Since the area gets little natural snow, this is the first time the Winter Olympics is taking place on almost 100% artificial snow.
This year’s Winter Olympics are being held in Beijing, China, and in two areas northwest of Beijing, Yangqing and Zhangjiakou. The areas get cold in the winter, but they don’t get a lot of snow. That’s because they’re not far from the Gobi Desert, and are generally very dry.
That meant some serious changes were needed to hold the Winter Olympics there. China took water from a reservoir which helps supply Beijing’s drinking water and sent it to a nearby river. To carry the water to the mountains for making snow, the country ran miles and miles of pipes. China says making the snow took about 49,000 gallons (185,500 liters) of water. Outside experts say it probably took a lot more water than that.
China hired an Italian company called TechnoAlpin to create the snow. TechnoAlpin created artificial snow at several earlier Winter Olympics. For the snow in this year’s Olympics, TechnoAlpin laid over 40 miles (64 kilometers) of pipe and brought in hundreds of snow-making machines. Even with all of those machines, making the snow for this year’s Games took seven weeks.
It’s useful to be able to make snow when nature doesn’t provide enough. But artificial snow isn’t the same as natural snow, which has more air and less water. An athlete used to natural snow might have to adjust their style on man-made snow.Still, the machines that make artificial snow are quite advanced. They can make several different kinds of snow depending on what’s needed for each sport. For example, the snow they make for downhill skiing is different from the snow made for cross-country skiing.
A few athletes have complained about the snow at this year’s Olympics. Most others say it’s been just fine.
In recent years, it has become more and more common to use artificial snow at winter sports events. That’s true even in places that used to have a lot of snow naturally. Some artificial snow was used in the Winter Olympics in 2010 and 2014 because of warm weather. In the 2018 Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, roughly 90% of the snow was man-made.
As the world warms because of climate change, problems like this are expected to become far more common. Michael Mayr, who leads TechnoAlpin in Asia, says, “You could not have winter sports now without man-made snow.”
12.Why does the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics use artificial snow?
A.To save energy. B.To keep athletes happy.
C.To provide enough snow. D.To protect the environment.
13.To create the snow, China first has to________.
    A.built a reservoir B.lay miles of pipes
C.find the source of water D.carry the water to the mountains
14.TechnoAlpin was chosen to create the snow for________.
A.the friendship between China and TechnoAlpin B.the request of the Olympic Committee
C.the lack of snow making company D.TechnoAlpin’s rich experience
15.What does the author mainly want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.The reasons of climate change. B.Some examples of warm weather.
C.The necessity of using artificial snow. D.The expectations of artificial snow.

    20
''When you're doing it every day, over and over again, little by little, that's the key. Because when you make things a habit, it just pops up into your mind without thinking and then, before you know it, really, you're thinking in English, '' Thomas says.
    A.Practice it daily.

Being a 12-year-old girl is hard, and being a 12-year-old girl who has trouble in learning math makes it even harder.
I was standing in front of my mom with my unfinished math homework in my hand, feeling like I was standing in front of a roadblock (路障) that was taller than my imagination.
“I can’t do it, Mom! I don’t understand it!” Although I couldn’t see clearly through my teary eyes, I could still feel my mom’s face was filled with concern.
“It’s okay. I understand it’s hard. You know that I struggled with the same issue before, but it can’t decide who you are or how smart you are! Now repeat after me!” Mom said in a kind but demanding voice, “I did it!” She waited for me to follow her. When I tried to speak, the only thing that escaped my mouth was a small sob (抽噎). With one strong loving arm around me, my mom used the other hand to dry the tears that I was no longer able to control.
“Can I see your homework, honey?” As instructed, I slowly handed over the paper. After a short while, she excitedly announced, “You got the fifth question right!” Shrugging (耸肩) my shoulders, I replied, “Yeah, but the rest are probably wrong.” Mom smiled, “Although you got some answers wrong, it doesn’t make the answer you got right any less important!”
I wanted to believe her. It was almost easy to let her positive words affect me in the moments when it was just her and me. However, every time I was sitting next to the kids of my age and watching them complete work that I couldn’t understand, the confidence my mom gave me seemed to disappear suddenly.

    Dear Jack,
I’m glad to know that you are interested in Chinese great scientists. I am more than happy to introduce to you my favorite scientist, whose name is Tu Youyou.
Tu Youyou, a great chemist and scientist, devoted most of her time to finding the cure for malaria. In 2015, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering artemisinin, which is the key to the treatment of malaria. So great is her contribution to the world that she has become an idol of many people, including me. Behind her success were numerous failures and setbacks, but never did she give up. Inspired by her story, I decided to study harder so as to realize my dream.
I hope her story can also have a positive effect on you. Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Yours,

    第二节(满分25分)
I told that to my mother, feeling upset. Mom told me that we would surely meet with problems which no one could avoid in our life! She said she had gone through the similar hardships, and she was still going through. But she believed she was smart enough to solve them. Therefore, it was important for me to know how excellent I could be and just face challenges with confidence! Then Mom asked for taking a look at my homework.
Hearing my mother’s words, I became inspired. Mom took the time to explain the questions patiently so I could totally understand them. When we got a question right each time, we would clap our hands as if I had just made an amazing achievement. By celebrating like this, I learned how to take every challenge, no matter how big or small. as a good chance to build up self-confidence. Eventually, I shouted out the sentence from my heart, “I did it!”

Michael Mayr, who leads TechnoAlpin in Asia, says, “You could not have winter sports now without man-made snow.”(随着全球因气候变化而变暖,预计像这样的问题将变得更加普遍。
